David Shantz’s pro hockey career has been, in his own words, a “wild ride.”

From lofty NHL draft status in 2004, to bouncing around various ECHL outposts, to his current gig as the No. 1 goaltender for the Abbotsford Heat, calling Shantz’s roundabout trip a wild ride might be an understatement.

But in the midst of sometimes-turbulent career circumstances, Shantz is a player who understands there’s more to life than hockey.

That’s why he spent a month in the sum-mer of 2009 doing humanitarian work in Zanzibar, an archipelago off the coast of

the East African nation of Tanzania. Shantz, 23, taught English and participated in a community development project, and he returned home to Canada with an expanded worldview.

“It opened up my eyes,” said Shantz, a native of Burlington, Ont. “The biggest thing is, nobody over there is pursuing a bigger house or a better car. It’s all about their family, their community and their neighbours – enjoying life and making the most of it. If someone’s in need, everyone pitches in whether they know the person or not.

“That’s the biggest thing I noticed coming back here. Most people here don’t even

know who their neighbours are across the street.”

If the well-traveled Shantz was unfamiliar with his neighbours over the last couple of hockey seasons, he could be forgiven for that.

Shantz was the fi fth goalie picked in the 2004 draft, 37th overall by the Florida Panthers, and looking back at the ’04 talent lottery, it’s clear drafting goalies is an inex-act science.

None of the four goalies picked ahead of Shantz – Al Montoya (New York Rangers), Devan Dubnyk (Edmonton Oilers), Marek Schwarz (St. Louis Blues) or Cory Schneider

(Vancouver Canucks) – have been able to establish themselves as full-time NHLers at this point. Though in Schneider’s case, that might have something to do with the fact that superstar Roberto Luongo is ahead of him on the Canucks’ depth chart.

When Shantz turned pro in 2006, the Panthers didn’t have their own AHL affi liate – they had access to just one goalie spot at the AHL level with the Rochester Americans. Shantz spent the bulk of his time in the ECHL, suiting up for the Florida Everblades, Dayton Bombers and Elmira Jackals over three seasons, and he wasn’t particularly good during his rare AHL auditions, posting

The hockey rink has always been Kris Chucko’s favourite place to be,

but even that betrayed him earlier this year.

While recovering from a concussion, the Abbotsford Heat forward and former fi rst round pick of the Calgary Flames would go to watch his teammates play. He’d end up leaving early, though, because the light, the music and the noise made him dizzy and sick.

“I’d have to go back into a cave,” says Chucko.

The Burnaby native took a hard hit in a game against the Manitoba Moose in Winnipeg on Dec. 29. He didn’t go down hard – at least he didn’t think so at the time – but he did experience a little whip-lash. It was so innocuous he didn’t even take note of who hit him. He fi nished the game but afterward felt terrible.

At fi rst, Chucko would get sick and dizzy with headaches just from watching television or reading. Once he fi nally got

adjusted to light and sound he tried going for a walk, but those dastardly symptoms quickly reappeared.

“It’s tough. When you go to bed with a headache for a month straight you start to think it’s never going to get bet-ter,” says Chucko of his fi rst concussion. “It’s the toughest injury I’ve had.”

In his career he’s hurt his wrist, legs, shoulder and back, to name a few body parts. But those hurts all had a timeline for recovery. Not so for bashes to the brain because they’re all unique.

Finally, after missing 29 games, Chucko was well enough to return earlier this month.

“It feels good. It was tough there for a long time just keeping trying to get back,

and with every time you get set back,” says Chucko, 24. “It feels good to be amongst the guys. It feels al-most like the start of a new

season for me.”In the fall, when it was the start of a

new season, Chucko hoped he was on the verge of graduating to the Flames. He

had reason for hope since he got to play his fi rst two NHL games last season, and scored 28 goals for the Quad City Flames.

“When you get a taste you always want more, but I’ve got to roll with the punch-es,” says Chucko. “All you can do is get better and hopefully one of these years…”

He was selected by the Flames 24th overall in 2004 after two successful sea-sons with the Salmon Arm Silverbacks of the B.C. Hockey League. Even he realized he was a work in progress, so he spent two years at the University of Minnesota before turning pro in 2006-07.

“I knew when I came into this league I wasn’t going to be somebody to jump in right away,” says Chucko. “I’ve got to be more consistent. This year is about fi nishing strong and helping the team to win, and being a big player on a team that wins.”

but because he and J.D. Watt are the team’s only two healthy for-wards that shoot right-handed.

“It’s an important year for Kris,” says Playfair. “The big thing for Kris is, can he dominate at this level, or can he be an impact player at this level to give himself a chance to play at the [NHL] level?

“He can break out easily.”While going to home games

was diffi cult for Chucko while his head hurt, there’s a big bonus when he does play because he gets to do it in front of his par-ents, family and friends for the fi rst time since he played for the Burnaby Winter Club bantams. It does mean, however, he has to set aside four or fi ve tickets for every home game.

That’s one headache he can deal with.

We caught up with Playfair in early March, prior to a two-game home set against the Lake Erie Monsters.

Q The Heat were on the road during the Olympics. Did you get back in time to watch the gold medal hockey game?

A “We watched a bit of the third period and overtime at the food court in the Vancouver airport. It was really quiet when they (the U.S.) scored to make it 2-2. It was almost like you were at a funeral. As soon as Canada scored, it was obviously an eruption again. It’s neat – you’re there with 500 people you’ve never seen before in your life,

and all of a sudden you have a com-mon bond because of the outcome of a game. That’s pretty cool.”

Q From a coaching perspective, what did you like about how Team Canada went about its business during the Olympic tournament?

A “I think they got better as the tourna-ment went on. At the start, I thought Luongo was going to play an im-portant part in some point in time. I thought Niedermayer was a very strong player in his own way, with han-dling the room. Sidney Crosby proved that he’s the next important part of our heritage in hockey with the shootout goal (against Switzerland) that took some pressure off of them, and then obviously the big goal (against the U.S.). To see Jarome (Iginla) be part of the game-winning goal, to bring that kind of confi dence back into the Flames locker room, that probably led into his hat trick against the Minnesota Wild (on March 7).

“From a coach’s perspective, it was

a neat thing to see – everybody was panicking and uncertain, but they found a way to get it done.”

Q During the Olympics, the Heat won eight of nine games on the road. Was there something you saw that maybe clicked with the team that they didn’t understand before?

A “I think there’s been a mental block in our dressing room, where if we work really hard, that’s acceptable. We talked on the road about how working hard is just a given – you’re supposed to do that. The next part of it is, what are you going to do to fi nd a win within the hard-working part of it? On the road, we found we were down in games, we played three games in three nights, we played really good teams. I felt like the players believed amongst themselves that they had a really good chance to win, and that was a mental thing that they had to get over.

“Coming back home and playing those two games against Providence, those were the hardest two games of the season we’ll ever play. It’s a

natural thing to relax a little bit. We fl ew all day Sunday, we had Monday off, and it’s hard to get emotionally prepared to play a team that’s fi ght-ing for a playoff spot.

“I’m more impressed, personally, with what we did when we came home than I was with the road trip.”

Q On NHL trade deadline day, Heat forward Riley Armstrong was traded to the Detroit Red Wings organization for defenceman Andy Delmore. Can you explain the rationale for that deal from an organizational standpoint?

A “We had guys (up front) coming off the injury list – Kris Chucko was coming back, Colin Stuart was coming back, and Pete Vandermeer was playing defence out of position. Pete for Andy was more the switch we were looking at, and it cost us something. It cost us a really good player (Armstrong), a player who’s good in the dressing room. To make your team better, you have to give up something.”

Colin & Mark StuartColin Stuart’s younger brother Mark, a former fi rst-round pick of the Boston Bruins, is in his third season a full-timer on the Beantown blueline. The siblings have each represented the United States in international competition – Mark captained the gold medal-winning American entry at the 2004 World Juniors, while Colin suited up for the 2009 World Championship.

Staffan & Niklas KronwallStaffan Kronwall’s big brother Niklas, a defenceman with the Detroit Red Wings, has gained notoriety as one of the NHL’s most feared open-ice hitters. Niklas is a member of hockey’s exclusive “Triple Gold Club” – a 23-member group of players who have won the Stanley Cup, along with gold medals from the Olympics and World Championships.

Keith & Brent SeabrookKeith was in the stands at Canada Hockey Place on Feb. 28 when older brother Brent helped Team Canada win an Olympic gold medal. The elder Seabrook – like Keith, a blueliner – plays for the Chicago Blackhawks and is regarded as one of the top up-and-coming defencemen in the NHL. He forms one of the NHL’s best defence pairings with Duncan Keith.

The Abbotsford Heat roster is chock-full of big-time hockey names like Seabrook, Kronwall,

Stuart and Latendresse – names linked to Olympic gold medals, Stanley Cups, and World Junior titles.

In Abbotsford, those famous surnames are attached to siblings of NHL stars. Olivier Latendresse represents one of the Heat’s big-league family ties – the 24-year-old forward’s younger brother Guillaume plays for the NHL’s Minnesota Wild.

While Olivier couldn’t be prouder of Guillaume’s professional success – he

calls his brother his “best friend” – there are mental challenges to overcome when your little bro is living in the private-jet, seven-fi gure-salary world of the NHL.

“It was tough when I came out of junior,” Olivier admitted following a recent Heat practice. “All my friends were asking me why I wasn’t playing there (in the NHL).”

The answer to that question has a lot to do with physical size. At 6’2”, 230 pounds, Guillaume has the build of a prototypical NHL power forward. Olivier, at 5’10”, 195 pounds, is a full fi ve inches shorter than his “little” brother.

“The way Guillaume plays the game, he’s built for the NHL,” Olivier said. “We’ve just got different games. I’m more of a small, skilled player.

“But I’m not jealous at all. It’s good for him, and I’m just trying to be the best I can be. Hopefully it takes me (to the NHL).”

After playing on the same line all the way up through the minor hockey ranks, the Latendresse siblings’ paths diverged in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Olivier, the elder by one year, played for Val D’Or, while Guillaume suited up for Drummondville.

Guillaume, a second-round draft pick by the Montreal Canadiens in 2005, went straight to the big leagues without a day in the AHL. Olivier, meanwhile, went undrafted, but landed an entry-level contract with the Phoenix Coyotes. He nearly cracked the Coyotes roster out of training camp in 2005, but things went sideways for him in the Phoenix organization, and he was eventually traded to the Canadiens in a deal that he says Guillaume helped orchestrate.

Olivier helped the Cincinnati Cyclones, Montreal’s ECHL affi liate,

to a Kelly Cup championship in 2008, but his career hit a roadblock last January when a shoulder injury necessitated season-ending surgery.

The 2009-10 campaign has been a season of redemption for the Latendresse clan. Guillaume struggled mightily with the Canadiens in the early going, scoring just two goals in 23 games, but got a new lease on life when he was traded to Minnesota. In his fi rst 39 games with the Wild,

the younger Latendresse potted 21 goals.

Likewise, Olivier’s performance this season has been encouraging. Coming back from shoulder surgery, he began the season with the ECHL’s Victoria Salmon Kings. The Heat, battling a rash of injuries, inked Olivier to a tryout contract on Feb. 4, and he’s been a mainstay among the team’s top nine forwards ever since.

“It’s been a good year,” Olivier said with a grin. “It was tough to come back in the ECHL and get the rhythm again, but now I feel like I’m playing like I was before. It feels good.”

a 5-17-4 record with Rochester.Shantz believes bouncing around so much in the Pan-

thers system may have slowed his development.“The biggest thing is playing in front of different

defencemen every night,” he explained. “Every team’s defence plays a certain way. Some will block shots for you, some will give the shot to take away the pass.

“Trying to fi nd some consistent play within a chaotic environment was the biggest challenge. They preach consistency, but it’s pretty tough when you’re on the move every two or three weeks.”

The Panthers cut Shantz loose last summer, but Cal-gary Flames director of player personnel Duane Sutter

offered the goalie a lifeline. Sutter was familiar with Shantz from his time in the Panthers’ front offi ce, where he had worked for 11 seasons prior to join-

ing the Flames in 2008, and he inked the goalie to an AHL contract.

Shantz began the season with the Victoria Salmon Kings of the ECHL while Leland Irving and Matt Keet-

ley handled the Heat goaltending chores, and he made the most of his time in the province’s capital, amassing an 18-5-4 record and earning a starting spot in the ECHL all-star game.

He was called up for a brief stint with the Heat in October when Keetley was rehabbing an injury, and

caught on permanently with the AHL club after a second recall on Jan. 28. Shantz was the goaltender of record for seven of the Heat’s eight wins on an epic (and wildly

successful) Eastern road trip in February, and his consis-tent play seems to have earned him the trust of Abbots-ford head coach Jim Playfair to an extent that Irving and Keetley haven’t been able to accomplish.

“He’s giving the team the best chance to win,” Play-fair said of Shantz. “He’s got a lot of confi dence in his game.”

Shantz has ridden the ECHL-to-AHL shuttle several times this season, but he’s found relative stability in the Heat organization.

“I’m grateful for the amount of predictability I have this year – whether it’s Victoria or here (in Abbotsford), at least it’s close by,” he said. “I don’t have to pack up and travel cross-country so often.

“And the communication’s been way better – I’ve gone the entire season without getting talked to in previous years,” he added. “You’re going to get credit if you’re playing well, and if not, at least you’re going to be told to pick it up.”

Shantz would love to return to Africa at some point, and the type of humanitarian work he did last summer is something he could see himself doing on a more perma-nent basis when his hockey days are done.

“After these different experiences I’ve had, I’ve started to get a better perspective on who I want to become as a person and what I want to pursue as a human being,” he said. “I want to make sure I come to the rink and put the time and effort in so that I can use the opportunity from hockey to pursue those dreams. 12Q Last season, your partner on the blueline with the AHL’s Hershey

Bears was Abbotsford native Dean Arsene. What did Dean tell you about Abbotsford when you signed with the Flames organization over the summer?

A “He was defi nitely pumped that there was a team coming here. I know that he would have liked to come here if it was the right fi t for him, but obviously it didn’t work out (Arsene signed with the Edmonton Oilers).”

Q During the NHL lockout of 2004-05, a lot of NHL stars went over to Europe to play. You had the opportunity to play with the likes of Dan Boyle, Marty Turco and Jose Theodore with Djurgardens IF Stockholm. What was that season like?

A “It was really good for the league back home in Sweden. Pretty much every team had fi ve or six guys from the NHL. It improved our league a lot, and I think it helped a lot of players improve. I think I’m one of them.”

Q If you were showing someone around your hometown of Jarfalla, Sweden, what’s the fi rst local landmark you’d show them?

A “I’d take them right to the bar. It’s quite different than over here, I’d say, but the guys would enjoy the Swedish girls a lot.”

Q Besides hockey, if you could win any trophy in professional sports, which one would you choose?

A “I’d say the Champions League in soccer would be a lot of fun. Everyone plays soccer in Europe, and just accomplishing something with a team is incredible. That feeling can’t be beat. I won (the Calder Cup) with Hershey last year, so I know the feeling. Winning on your own (in an individual sport) is special, but winning as a team defi nitely ranks higher in my mind.”

Q Talk about last year’s AHL championship with Hershey. What was special about that group?

A “I got there right after the trade deadline, so I played 12 or 13 games before the playoffs. The fi rst day I got there, I could tell it was a group of guys who liked to have a lot of fun and had great chemistry. The coaches were tremendous to all of us, and everyone accepted their role and made the best out of it. We had a lot of fun together, that’s defi nitely the key.”

Q What’s your perfect day in the off-season?

A “I just like hanging out and being with my friends, I guess. Every day looks pretty much the same in the off-season. Typically, I’d go work out in the morning, then come back home and have a little nap. Then I’d head out to my brother’s cottage in the archipelago and do a little sea-dooing.”
