Editor:
Hi, I am the publisher for all The Works magazines, I live in Abbeydale with my baby daughter, husband and mad cocker spaniel. I enjoy walking, gardening and anything that makes me laugh!
For future issues I will be looking for local topics, your opinions (good or bad!), stories & people of interest so any suggestions would be most welcomed - please email [email protected].
As a community magazine we are always trying to extend our links with local businesses and believe that our low budget advertising offers could be the answer to promoting your business during the current “credit crunch” climate.

The Works Local quizzes Susie Oakley, Village
Manager of Richmond Painswick, on Assisted Living What is Assisted Living?
Assisted Living is a philosophy
of care and support services
that promotes independence,
dignity and well-being. It is
now firmly established as an
alternative to residential care,
where people can retain much
of their independence. It’s an
ideal combination of having
your own front door but with
the reassurance that care and
support is available on site 24
hours a day.
So, is Assisted Living all about promoting independence?
Absolutely! By providing supervision or assistance with activities of daily living, people who
are finding it difficult to live independently in a private residence, but do not need the 24
hour care provided by a nursing home, are able to enjoy prolonged independence in a safe,
caring, socially active and supportive environment.
Do people own the apartments?
We are still very much a nation of home owners and the majority of people do prefer to
purchase the apartments, meaning they retain equity and reduce outgoings.
What does the Assisted Living Package include?
The package is designed to take away the daily chores and allow people more quality time
to enjoy the things that they prefer to do! This means that we prepare all meals, which can
be taken either in the restaurant or brought to the apartment, a daily housekeeping service
and all laundry. All utility costs are also included within the package.
Is additional help and support available?
Where people require additional help and support, this is arranged by our own domiciliary
care agency to meet the individual needs of that person. Should care needs ever increase,
then there is also the reassurance of our on site Care Home providing 24 hour nursing care.
However, one of the most important parts of life at Richmond Painswick is social interaction
with like minded people. Our activity co-ordinators ensure there is a full diary of activities
and events, plus having our own full time driver and fleet of vehicles means there are daily
trips to local towns and places of interest.

At Last! A NEW FORM OF HEATING FROM GERMANY
Simple to install, Powerful, and no more servicing - EVER!
In Germany and Austria it can get as low as -20, even -30ºC and a single snowfall can be as
much as 3ft or more overnight. To deal with this severe cold they need powerful heating able to
cope with sub zero temperatures and sudden climate change. They need excellent control and
above all - low running costs without the need for constant servicing and replacement parts.
The solution, incredibly... is electric! This incredible
heating could be the answer to help beat ever increasing
energy costs and amazingly, it is not gas or oil, or solid
fuel - but clean electric! All you need is standard supply
and NO special tariff like economy 7.
All over Europe more people are choosing to heat their
homes and offices with this very special form of electric
heating in preference to oil gas or E7. In our area, more and more of our customers are making
that same decision and when you see this incredible heating for yourself you could be next! The
heating looks just like conventional radiators, but STOP! it is very different! Put simply, that
clunky central heating boiler needing constant servicing and replacement parts isn’t the only
choice anymore!
Now you can heat your homes, offices, extensions or conservatories with these incredible
heaters providing individual control over every room without the need for a central control or
wasted boiler space. This incredible German heating simply plugs in! Job Done! You can do
just one room or the whole house! This heating, whilst quite NEW in the UK has been
mainstream for a very long time in Germany and Austria. Sunflow Ltd. offer a complete solution which can include disposing of your old central heating
system, even oil tanks! Discover for yourself this incredible German heating.

UPTON ST LEONARDS WI – OCTOBER 2011
After a week of glorious sunshine President Lynne welcomed all ladies to our October
meeting, introducing speaker Carolyn Evans talking on the art of quilling.
This subject derives its name from the French “Corriel” to coil. Early examples date from
the 1400’s and it is believed nuns covered boxes, named Reliquary, where trinkets and
small church relics were kept. At an exhibition in Bayeaux Carolyn saw examples of
paper filigree work in gold and silver. Religious vestments, especially capes and gowns
were kept in large chests. For Carolyn it all began with a course at Denman 20 years
ago and she has since taught at colleges and judges with an experienced eye. Using
brightly coloured strips of paper she showed us how to coil on a cut of needle called a
dimpy sealing the end with PVA glue. Shaping and tweezing to form patterns these
lovely shapes can be used for card making or more advanced intricate pictures. Flowers,
birds, chevrons and even a baby rattle came alive with quilling to give us many beautiful
designs. A warm round of applause followed the vote of thanks by Marlene.
Business was brief as Lynne said we are through to the semi final of the skittles and are
due to play Horsbere WI. Mrs Rumsey won the class at the recent Flower Show, but
with only three entries we need new ideas for next year. Our mystery trip was very
successful. Our walk around the village was very enjoyable and we next meet on
Monday October 10th. Some members will be attending a willow weaving class on
October 29th at the Village Hall. Please bring any shoeboxes for Samaritans Purse
Operation Christmas Child to the next meeting. We meet again on November 7th at
7.30pm when, following our AGM, we will be entertained with a cookery demonstration
by our very own Glenda Ford. On December 5th we meet for our Christmas meeting
when the speaker will be David Bayley with a Magic Lantern Christmas Show. Visitors
will be very welcome to join us.

DAVE’S TOP TIPS
Types of sealant
Silicone sealants
Silicone sealants are not water based so they do not need to dry to go hard, they go hard through a chemical process occurring as a reaction with air. This process is called curing. Silicone sealants are waterproof, can be used outdoors for a variety of waterproofing jobs and come in many colours including clear.
Water based sealants
These sealants and fillers are water based and usually used for gap filling down the sides of architraves or in the top of skirting boards. Again they are supplied in many colours and can be over-painted, some can be sanded and the white ones can sometimes be stained but check on the tube if this is the case.
Roofing sealants
Roofing and gutter sealants are highly flexible, completely waterproof and can be used, as the name suggests, for sealing leaks in gutters and flat roofs. The surface must be absolutely free from dust to get the best possible seal.
Regards,
Dave Stevens.
