grand gesture and builds a wonderful facility the last thing they build is the infrastructure? The car parking is abysmal, and, like the restaurant, not built yet.

Finally she was discharged, and after a long wait (2 ½ hours) for pharmacy to deliver the medication (promised in 40 minutes), I parked Poppy in a wheelchair facing the manager’s desk so she wasn’t overlooked. This eventually worked! I cannot fault the care she received, and the hospital is far superior to the old ones, but in its vastness one easily feels that you might just have been forgotten.

Both Pat and I have been very touched by the concern, help, and good wishes, given to us during this time. Thank you all.

Editorial

Voyage of discovery

When the new hospital at Southmead was opened I remarked “Oh, good, at last a bus that takes you right to the hospital reception”. Our local 625 to The Mall and the No 76 to the entrance was advertised. Wrong! It stops on Monks Park Road. For someone in decent health that’s not a problem, but for the elderly and infirm it’s daunting.

A lot of you will know my wife has had a spell in Southmead, sampling the new facilities. They are rather wonderful, and the staff are of the friendly type, those that soon revert from ‘sir’ to ‘my love’, (my kind of people). Poppy had a lovely, en suite ward on the 4th floor. I walked miles to get to her (and shed 3 pounds doing it!).

On her final day there I walked in pouring rain to the entrance, grabbed a tea at Costa, and got in the lift. At that second off went the fire alarm! I opened the door. “Come on sir” said a lady, “come to a place of safety”. I was bundled with others into a room where apparently I would be safe, sat down and drank my tea. Eventually a patient wandered in and it was revealed that the danger was over, 10 minutes ago. We had been forgotten!

Never mind, I thought I would stay with Poppy all day, and get a meal in the restaurant. Wrong! There are Costa coffee shops, but no restaurant like there used to be for visitors. Why is it that whenever somebody makes the

PatriciaFor many years Patricia Eades wrote articles for this magazine. She obviously had a great love of nature and looked deeply at all of the things which surrounded her home in New Passage. She understood the seasons, and what they produced, she spotted things that most of us would not give a second glance to. She wrote about music, and folklore, the weather and the river where she saw great beauty.

Snowdrops she recalled were known as Eve’s tears or the February Fairmaid. It is with great sadness that I report her passing from the bit of this world where she found so much to share with others.

Our sincere sympathy lies with her husband, Keith. 5

News for Pilning & Severn Beach

7th September 2014

Dear Ward Members,

South Glos. New Council Leader – Cllr Matthew Riddle has been elected as the new leader due to the resignation on ill health grounds of John Calway. John had served this office faithfully for many years.

High Speed Broad Band - progress for numbers beginning 63 is on schedule and should be delivered in mid October.

EU Energy Saving – An EU wide edict is being rolled out to reduce the power consumption to 30 household appliances. This starts with a maximum power output of 900 watts per vacuum cleaner from 1st September.

South Glos. Council Tax Reduction – A new reduction scheme is being rolled out in April 2015, if you receive this benefit and would like to be consulted, please email:- [email protected] or telephone 01454 868002. N.B. This does not apply to people receiving State Pension credit or a Disability Premium. Ragwort – 120 notified sites of this weed are in our county. StreetCare have a database with them on.

Red Tractor with Union Flag Icon – If you see this mark on food produce, mainly meat you know it is produced and processed in our country. In a local supermarket, the majority of meat did not have this sign and was imported. In a deputising Planning Councillor role, I have visited farmers who are requesting permission to convert their fields into Solar Farms. The reason given is that rearing livestock, producing milk or growing crops locally to British Health standards is no longer economic.

Southmead Hospital Visitors Restaurant – With the new hospital commissioned the old visitors restaurant was closed. Many of my ward members have contacted me to say that the 3 Costa coffee areas do not fulfil this requirement. I have contacted North Bristol Health Trust about the possibility of a new Visitors Restaurant and also Charlotte Leslie the MP in that area.

Severn Beach Discover Event – On the 24th September, this Wild Walk is from 10.00 until 12.00. see website:- www.southglos.gov.uk/discover

Bridle Paths – The surface of the Bridle Path is the responsibility of the District Council but any vegetation growing from the hedges is the responsibility of the landowner in the adjoining property. (A fuller explanation in my blog.)

Best regards

Robert

Thank you

A big thank you to my family, friends, and neighbours who turned out in force to make my 80th birthday very

memorable. £415 was donated for Diabetes UK, a charity very close to my heart.

I love these villages!

School days

When I was at Thornbury Secondary Modern School, many years ago, we had lessons known as Domestic Science. This was an all day session, under the leadership of MissWashbrook, who during one term became Mrs Landman, and wished it to be pronounced ‘Land-Man’ (sounding like the famous Hand-bag in ‘The Importance of being Earnest!’) We had a variety of stoves and cookers, and had to learn to cook with any of them.

There was laundry to do, and ironing, with drying cabinets on hand so you took your washing home dried and ironed. We learnt how to iron a handkerchief. Men’s were folded in half, quartered, and then folded again to produce a long shape showing any motif on top. Ladies ones were folded into a quarter and then into a triangle, showing any embroidery in the corner. Starched tray cloths, after damping down, were ironed on the front, then on the back, to bring out all the raised markings. These would then be rolled to prevent creases and were caught with a pin.

We had to iron shirts, firstly the back yoke – sleeves – front – back and then the collar, which would have been starched. We mixed Robin Starch with boiling water to a gel like wallpaper paste and then diluted with cold water avoiding a lumpy mess.

Rinse water usually had a blue bag swished around to help whites look whiter.

I enjoyed cooking many dishes, cakes etc, being allowed to take home the finished goodies. Mock cream was made with cornflour, milk, margarine, caster sugar and vanilla essence. Marzipan, if I remember rightly, was made with semolina and almond essence. A Christmas cake, was made over many weeks, starting with cleaning the loose fruit with flour, stoning the raisins by hand, then preparing all the ingredients. You created your own recipe plan and baking times.

The cake was baked, marzipaned and iced with royal icing (which was as hard as bricks) and then decorated. I remember using gravy browning and cochineal to colour the design on the top of my cake. Finally the frill was added. I think we were given marks at the end. On Domestic Science day you carried the ingredients (hopefully none forgotten) in a basket with your clean apron covered by a tea towel and hoped you wouldn’t be jogged on the coach journey home.

Pilning Flower Show Report 2014

The 45th Pilning Flower Show was a runaway success on Saturday 23rd August, breaking many of its records.. Entries were up at 448, and the main hall of St Peter’s School was bursting with colour and interest. The judges were all impressed by the quality and quantity of exhibits as were the public who came in record breaking numbers.

The main winner on the day was Graham Hawkins from Southmead, taking four trophies including the coveted ‘Best in Show Shield’ with his stunning ‘top tray’ of vegetables. ‘Best in Show by a Parishioner’ was won in photography by Steven Wharram of Severn Beach with his beautiful picture of snails on a log. The judges agreed that this entry was outstanding in the new and popular ‘Wild Life and Nature’ class. Pilning resident Edward England was the most successful entrant on the day, collecting 5 trophies including those for most points in the show by a Parishioner in fruit, flowers and flower arranging. Becky Latham won the Juvenile cup for her creative fruit and vegetable animal.

Representing this year’s chosen charity WASP – Wheels at St Peter’s, Roy Edwardes was on hand to present the trophies. The high numbers of visitors yielded more

peaks for sales of the home made cakes and teas, and bids in the charity auction of the shows produce classes, and items donated by local businesses. A cheque for £500 has already been presented to WASP and it is hoped that this may be at least doubled when the presentation is finalised at the shows AGM at the Plough at 7:30pm on Thurs 2nd October.

Organising committee chair RichardEdwards said “It was a fantastic show, but with some mixed emotions. Our thoughts were very much with absent friends; for the recovery in hospital of show judge Ray Worsley and regular exhibitor Pat Edwardes, and of course with the recent loss of our dear friend and auctioneer Trevor Fry. However, with the euphoria of such a successful and well supported show, we were all lifted and with the local community enjoyed a fabulous day”. A full set of the shows results can be found on Pilning Flower Show’s Facebook page or on the Thornbury Gazette’s webpage. Next year’s show will take place on 29th August. Richard says, “We are always open to new ideas and to welcome anyone who would like to get involved with helping us. To do so please do get in touch with any of the current organisers or just pop along to the AGM”.

Pilning & Severn Beach Parish Council

The council met on Monday 1st September 2014 at Severn Beach School, Severn Beach with seven councillors in attendance as per the published

agenda for a meeting of the Parish Council.

Decisions and points of interest

• At the recent AGM of Care for the Elderly Mrs Barbara Humphries announced her intention to stand down as Chair after 11 years. The members of the committee thanked Barbara for her dedication and hard work over the years and wished her well for the future. Barbara will continue to serve as a volunteer at the weekly sessions of the day centre. • Mr Ian Humphries of Pilning resigned his position on the Parish Council with immediate effect. • Waste bins in parish were monitored over the summer months and it was decided to reinstate the multi-use bin at the bus shelter opposite the Trinity Hall due to the large amount of litter created.

The results from the flower show were reported by Mrs Frances Barr MBE as follows:

• Best Allotment Pilning Mr M Jacobs • Best Allotment Severn Beach Mr & Mrs K Weeks

• Best front garden Pilning Mr & Mrs Reynolds• Best front garden Severn Beach Mr & Mrs Newman • The prize given by Mrs Frances Barr MBE, annually, was presented to Mr Jonathan Edwardes for his memorial to the start of WW1. A dramatic display of remembrance by initially flood-lighting the church and then a simple candle in the porch at 10pm. This was placed afterwards on the war memorial by the names of parishioners who died during World War I.

The next Parish Council meeting will take place on Monday 6th October 2014 at Pilning Village Hall, Pilning starting at 7pm.

If you would like to contact the parish council please telephone the clerk on 01454 631499 or by email [email protected]

Get The Bus To The New Southmead Hospital Reception

Some of the original information given about travelling by bus from Severn Beach, Pilning and Easter Compton gave the impression that the No 76 from The Mall stopped outside the hospital reception. It stops in Monks Park Road, and you walk. Here’s the best way to go if walking is a problem, or it’s raining!Take 625 from our area and go to BRISTOL PARKWAY BUS INTERCHANGE.At Parkway you have a choice of 4 buses that go right to the hospital reception entrance. No 18, Emerson’s Green- Southmead HospitalNo 82, Yate to Southmead HospitalNo 501 Abbeywood to Avonmouth, via Southmead HospitalNo 502 UWE to Shirehampton via Southmead HospitalThis gives a weekday frequency of 15 minutes at Parkway.Make sure the bus is going in the right direction, towards Southmead.

There have recently been a number of dwelling burglaries where the thief walked into the house through an unlocked rear door whilst the householder was in another room or just outside the property. The break-ins mostly happened between 8pm and midnight.Small items like handbags, wallets, laptops and mobile phones were stolen without anyone realising a stranger had entered their home.

EASTER COMPTON NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH August 2014 Newsletter Online vehicle fraud is costing the nation £17.8 million each year, according to new figures released by the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) . In 2013, more than 6,600 UK residents reported online vehicle fraud to the police, with an average loss of £4,078 per victim. The range is huge; from losses of less than £50, which mainly related to holding deposits, to one unlucky victim who lost £300,000. Fraudsters used the following methods to steal their victims’ cash:

• Part or full payment for the vehicles and then loss of contact with the “seller” accounted for nearly half (49%) of frauds

• More than a third (37%) of cases involved the payment of a deposit rather than the full amount

• Bank transfers (58%), fake eBay Invoices (14%) and fake Google Payment Systems Invoices (12%) offering non-existent "buyer protection" for the transaction were the most commonly cited payment methods

• Some victims paid funds to holding accounts on the basis that funds will be held until the buyer has received the goods and is satisfied with them

• Other victims received texts from well-known websites requesting refundable fees for car inspections

Further statistics show that:

• Nearly three quarters (71%) of victims were men • People in their forties reported a quarter (25%) of all online vehicle fraud • London was the most targeted city for online vehicle fraud, followed by Bristol and

then Birmingham

SIX  OF  THE  BEST  TIPS  FOR  CAR  BUYERS

1. Always  see,  inspect  and  drive  the  vehicle  for  yourself.  2. Remember  that  if  the  vehicle  seems  too  cheap,  it  could  be  a  scam  3. Always  visit  sellers  at  their  home  or  business  premises,  not  in  a  car  park.  4. Check  that  the  mileage  shown  on  the  odometer  ties  up  with  a  recent  MOT  certificate.  5. Check  that  the  V5C  document  (or‘  logbook’)  is  authentic,  with  a  DVLA  watermark.  Make  sure  the

address  listed  is  the  same  as  the  seller’s  address.  Make  sure  the  Vehicle  Identification  Number  (VIN)  on  the  vehicle  matches  the  one  on  the  V5C  document

6. Pay  for  the  vehicle  only  when  you  collect  it  from  the  seller.  Don’t  transfer  money  direct  to  a  bank  account  or  via  a  payment  service

• Install tracking software on smart phones, laptop and tablet computers.

• Be vigilant, call 999 immediately if you see anyone acting suspiciously at a neighbour’s property.

Comment

No excuses for circulating this to all – remember thieves often target the rear of properties because they’re less likely to be seen by their neighbours!!

Severn Beach & District Over 50’s Club

Enter as strangers – leave as friends......

This adage was spotted by one of our ladies whilst on our Lynmouth coach trip. She thought it perfectly described the ethos of our club, and would make a great leader for my article. Well-done Chris.

Although we are all individuals with different views, opinions and beliefs, we still manage to be a friendly, caring bunch and very rarely – if ever – resort to fisticuffs! In fact, we could have advised those UN leaders over at the Celtic Manor on how to exist with your fellow man/woman. Guess our invite got lost in the post.

Another of our ladies celebrated her 90th birthday in August, Dot Sadler. Dot is

known and loved, not only by our members, but also by many more in our community. We hopefully did her proud at her birthday tea celebrations and hope to share many more with her. This is the second 90th this year; Joan Constable celebrated hers in January. There must be something in the water!

During October we have live music from Deadwood Stage, a Harvest Sale, our Club Forum (with wine!) and a Tea party and raffle. In November we have more live music, this time from Tapestry, a Christmas shopping trip to Cardiff and a Christmas sale on the 20th – an ideal opportunity to get rid of those panic buys from Cardiff.

Why don’t you turn off the central heating and come and join us.

Dear EditorDear EditorLike many fellow parishioners I was of mixed feelings regarding the turning off of street lights during part of the night. To my surprise it wasn’t long after the switch off that little owls took advantage by using the poles to perch on and call.On a clear night, with the lights off, parts of the Pilning area are really dark, a boon I am sure for those interested in observing the skies. I am now able to actually see stars and related constellations from my bed! For me part time lighting has meant little owls in dark starry nights that I’ve not seen before. Jonathan King

Dear EditorLast year you ran a piece when RP Fighting Blindness had received a donation from www.hoggingthebridge.co.uk , you requested to let you know if there is an event this year.Hogging the bridge will take place this year on Sunday 19th October start 11-00 from the rear of the Aust service area, the Parade will then go over the Severn Bridge through villages on the Welsh side finishing in Chepstow. Your readers may possibly experience extra bikes travelling to the event, but not the full parade. The committee members we have met, are a very responsible & approachable bunch, I am confident if anyone has any concerns they will try to address them, contacts on the site, trust this is useful.Kind Regards Ron & Gina Pritchard

Terazina was a staging post for very plush coaches going all over Brazil. Hitching a lift was difficult so we booked tickets for the coast. The coach was surprisingly cheap. We slept most of the two day journey, just as well as the road was the usual red dust so you couldn’t see much.

Fortalaza has a beautiful beach but is alive with thieves. Teri had her sandals stolen as she dozed under a palm tree. We camped on the beach with a local group who were celebrating their exam results, an important time for them as the results dictated which university they would go to. All seemed to have achieved their goal as the party was in full swing. In the morning we were interviewed by the local TV station and newspapers. They really wanted to know if we had met the Queen. Teri had been to Buckingham Palace to receive an award for the Girl Guides so she was the centre of attention.

The local fishermen sail jangaddas, three, or five logs tied together with rope. The mast is bamboo bent into a crescent. They sail in pairs dragging the net up the beach. After the bigger fish have been extracted the locals are allowed to scavenge the small fish. Everyone then sets up fires and they feast on the beach.

After a stay in Fortalaza we hitched a lift towards Natal, which was used by the Americans during WW2. On route we

found the road was closed because a bridge had been swept away. The police had a check point there and said we could stay there overnight as they were going home for the weekend. Work continued on the bridge and we spent two sleepless nights in an atap hut with rats as big as cats.

The returning police were very helpful, arranging a lift for us to Natal. It was in the biggest loaded petrol tanker imaginable. The driver was very careful and informative, so the journey was less stressful than it could have been. On arrival in Natal we met a group of soldiers who insisted we visit their barracks for a meal and shower. They entertained us with their marching band. There was a lot of changing direction and twirling of instruments; very American High School, and good fun.

From Natal we hitched a lift to Salvador where carnival had just started. The costumes were magnificent – each club trying to outshine the others, just like Bridgwater. The noise was unbelievable, nobody sleeps for three days. The campsite was more like Glastonbury, complete with mud, but no showers. Luckily it rained on the second night.

From here we got a lift with some expat’s from Bromsgrove who were working in Rio. The beauty of Rio, as seen during the recent World Cup, is, in reality, even more breathtaking. We

local macumba spirits. The trees are festooned with food, ribbons, candles, cigars and wine. There is also jewellery, which looked expensive. Nobody stole it, which was quite astonishing as stealing seems to be a way of life. When our bus stopped at traffic lights two armed men came onboard, took the money from the driver and jumped off. This happened twice during our stay.

Next time we head for Argentina via Sao Paula.

John CannonFormer head teacher at Northwick School

found accommodation in a student hostel on Ipanema beach. There is a tourist train to visit the statue of Christ perched on its rock overlooking the bay, but Teri and I decided to walk up.

This was a real eye opener. From the opulence of the beach area of Copacabana we entered the favellas, the squalid shanty town which clings to the mountainside. Open sewers, live electric cables across the roads, and threatening groups of young men who race around on motorbikes. We took the tourist train back down.

In Rio is a place called Ticaja Forest. The locals visit it and place gifts for the

Regular meetings are held for all Severnside residents and local organisations to attend and discuss issues and community projects. Everyone is welcome, it is your chance to raise any community issues you have and to put forward suggestions for the improvement of our area.

Our last meeting was held at the Hallen Community Centre and was attended by a smaller than average but enthusiastic gathering. The chairman gave a brief talk on his recent activities. He spoke to SGC Streetcare with regard to the lack of grass cutting and the presence of large areas of ragwort on verges. The lack of Community Police cover was again raised with Inspector Bob Evely. The awarding of a grant to the Old School Hall for the modernisation of their kitchen via the SGC grant scheme NHB given at the Area Forum meeting, and attending of a Police And Crime Commissioner meeting at the Portishead police headquarters.

Kay Winston then gave a talk on the operation of the Air Ambulance Service and how it costs £1.5 million per year to run and is entirely funded by public donations.

Tim Bartlett from the North Bristol NHS Trust gave a talk on the new Southmead Hospital on how it was conceived, funded and brought to operational service.

Following this Kay Winston, Tim Bartlett and Dave Manners from South West Ambulance took part in a lively question and answer session.

Inspector Bob Evely gave a presentation of his role in neighbourhood policing, and gave an over view of a new operating model to be introduced in September. He informed us that the new police station on the A38 at Patchway will be opening on 11th September. He also said he would look at getting a temporary officer to stand in on our community beat until such time as it can be returned to full strength.

Almondsbury Parish Council gave a report on their activities over the previous 3 month period with issues ranging from grass cutting, planning concerns and other such local matters. There are vacancies on this committee any one wishing to join and help in local issues should contact myself or Jacqui Ward and we will put you in touch with them.

The meeting then discussed issues ranging from improvements to junctions 16 & 17 on the M5, pot holes in roads, parking problems, fly tipping.

The next meeting is at 7pm on Wednesday 29th October in Easter Compton Hall, this meeting will be addressed by Sue Mounstevens the Police and Crime Commissioner and everyone is welcome.
