From yours truely
what an exerience it has been to create Abbey Magazine
for you! I came to New York six months ago with nothing but a vision of what I wanted it look and say and now here we are, with our first copy! I came to NYC, not knowing what to expect, and then I found out why people move to new york! If you want a little insight to it too, take a look (page ##) before you do! And I highly recommend it, too because im never looking back. You cant possibly imagine what lies ahead of you until you live and experience it. So, reader, you are a fearless, innovative girl going out on your own and finding yourself along the way, and now there is a magazine who understands what you like to do and helps you out a bit along the way. Go out and explore, and dont forget to have a little fun while youre out there!

For what its worth: its never too late or too early to be whoever you want to be...I hope you make the best of it. And I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you never felt before. I hope you meet people with different points of views. I hope you live a life youre proud of. If you find that youre not, I hope you have the strength to start all over again.

ome have said the amount of magazine internships Ive had so farfiveis a bit excessive. However, my time interning is often my favorite part of the semesterregardless of whether it boosts any chances at future employment. Internship programsespecially in the magazine worldhave gotten a lot of flak recently. I can understand some points these dissenters make, but on the whole, I would heartedly defend any magazine internship I have ever had. Was I paid wages for my hours? Mostly, no. Was I always doing work that could be classified as educational? Of course not. But Im strongly convinced that each internship Ive had has brought me experiences and taught me things I never would have been able to learn in a classroom. Even if I dont end up in the magazine world after graduation, the communication, office-environment, and writing skills I learned will go with me anywhere.
Back to the magazine world specifically, I think its important to note that often an internship is the only path to a position. Withstanding high-level connections and a stroke of luck, almost everyone Ive ever worked for in magazines got their start as an intern. I could be a journalism major at any school in the country, but by living in NYC was I able to intern while taking courses, and only by interning, did I truly

began to grasp what it is to be a journalist in todays world. Of the five internships, my favorite experience came this semester, as a features intern at Harpers BAZAAR. Working in a small department, I was able to participate in a manner much more hands-on than I ever had before. Theres my first piece of advice: look for a magazine that will give you the benefits of being in a big name environment, but the

experience of a much smaller brand. By which I mean, look for the niche within the big name. The second reason the semester turned out so well is for a reason for which one has little control, simply: the location of your desk. It might sound peripheral, but Ive found this matters greatly. Internships are about both learning and networking. And its exponentially more difficult to form connections with a supervisor whos sitting on the other side of the office. Some companies place interns in a special intern corner that
can be a great thing for forming connections with the other interns, but its easy to get stuck back there and not see a real staff member all day. At BAZAAR, my desk was in the features department and I sat directly behind my editors all day. Not only did I come more in contact with them, but I also probably got better assignments simply because I was conveniently right there, in their eyesight. (If you are regulated to a spot on the fringe, make sure you make face-to-face contact with editors daily.) And so, at the end of my internship, I came away with a number of clips, a much greater understanding of the day-to-day of a magazine office environment, and professional relationships with a handful of editors. Like almost all of my internships I found this one on Ed2010.coman excellent source for all things magazine industry-related. Lastly, on that topic, it should be noted that
even just the process of searching for internships, writing cover letters and going on interviews is excellent experience in itself. After all, any real-world experience, no matter how minuscule, is, in my mind, advantageous.

Jessica Cruel of bellasugar walks us through the 6 shades we will need this upcoming season and why!
{Beauty}
Oxblood has taken the fashion world by storm this season.
For a shimmery ap-proach, try Debo-rah Lippmann's
Through the Fire ($18), and for a creamy option, you'll love the crimson-toned OPI
Skyfall ($9).
While the majority of Fall colors are moody in tone, blue is the exception. This year, go for the unexpected with electric
sapphire and cobalt varieties, such as China Glaze Man Hunt ($7) or Nails Inc. Baker Street ($10). But if you're employed in a more professional environment, reach for a navy
hue and top it with a matte base coat.
Deep eggplant and aubergine colors work just as gorgeously on the nails as they do on the lips for Fall. With Chanel Provocation ($26), you'll get a lush plum, but if metallic is what you desire, try MAC Formidable ($16), a multifaceted indigo.
Olive green will get you through just about any
occasion, from a job interview to a first date.
If you prefer brighter shades, choose a jewel-
toned emerald polish like Nars Zulu ($18), and for something chic
and subdued, go with the camouflage-hued Amazonia from
Dior ($23).
Skip the pink and pearlescent nudes this Fall, and opt for darker taupe and brown undertones instead. F3 by RGB Cosmetics ($16) is a caramel color that looks great on me-dium skin tones, while Jin Soon Austere ($18) is a warm umber that will replace your melodramatic black pol-ish as temperatures dip.
Metallic top coats and the holidays go hand in hand. Add a layer of Essie As Gold as It Gets ($8) to any base for an instantly gilded manicure. And get your fill of the gray polish trend with Butter London Dodgy Barnett ($14), which sparkles with a foil finish.

But

The young woman who completes their little triangle of blissful misfits is the perky but damaged Sam, played by Harry Potter star Emma Watson (without a trace of a
theres also a darkness that follows its main character, even at his happiest, which keeps the film from turning completely safe and self-satisfied. Perks features a well-chosen cast, an eclectic music mix (David Bowie, New Order, Air Supply) and some moments of uncomfortable honesty as well as dreamlike wonder. Maybe Patrick and Sam recognize his outsider status in themselves; in no time, the three are inseparable. The film takes place in a hazy sort of late-80s, early-90s time frame no one has a cellphone, and mix tapes are a crucial medium for expressing teen angst which adds to its feeling of universality. The melancholy Asleep by The Smiths appears so prominently, its practically a character itself. Maybe they invite Charlie into their inner sanctum a bit too quickly, but theres an irreverent, playful energy to their antics and a subversive sense of humor that makes you not mind so much. Directed and written by Perks novelist Stephen Chbosky, the film follows these characters and their friends through all the rituals of a school year in suburban Pittsburgh. He features heavy use of voiceover early on, as Charlie narrates the letters he writes to a mysterious, unseen recipient, but theres also great delicacy in the characters intimate interactions. 43Miike Snow has a
remarkable way of making music. Their
album, released early this year was one that is not only a
song, but an entire experience. This band
resonates passion in the same way
that their name is ironically named as a person instead of the band itself. The
sounds should truely be accompanied
by lights and a small venue, and i
encourage to put it into perspective.
Although Taylor Swifts new album

hearing her song on the radio, youll still be singing it, be
singing it, because its just that catchy.

10 reasons to love these partyholics not-so-anonymous
Girlsby Ken Tucker

Girls, how much do I love you? Let me count the ways.
Most of the characters dance even worse than I do. This is thoroughly endearing, especially when Hannah gyrates as though she might know more moves, but is too enthused to both to try and remember them.
2. The series suggested that Brooklyn parties are almost always difficult to find; some things never change
3. Adam, in a shirt, at the party, surprising Hannah with, well, everything. The fact that he was there. That he was dancing like a mad-man (during the airing of an actual episode of Mad Men). That hes in AA and it is (according to a friend who accidentally-casually destroys his anonymity), the program is the main defining thing about him.
[ ]
4. Hannah came in for blistering criticism by Adam when she expressed dismay at not knowing Adam not telling her he is in AA. You never asked me anything! he bellowed. You dont want to know me You want to come over in the middle of the night and have me f the dog s out of you and then write about it in your journal! Yuck, and wrong, Adam, but way to rage! One of the wonderful things about Girls is that, unlike almost any other show, this was not a, see, Hannah deserved that, I now view Hannah in a different light because of the wisdom Adam spoke moment. No: Adams rant was actually utterly self-serving. He is a withholding, controlling, if just charming- and chiseled-enough jerk to make their dented relationship believable. But hes wrong that Hannah never asks him about himself, that she just prattles on about herself. She doesnt. Go back and look. I loved Adams vehemence. I loved that he was wrong. He needs to do another Fourth Step.

Marnie becoming so unjustifiably outraged at Charlies new girlfriend, who in turn knew just the right insult to toss at impeccable Marnie: Are you one of those Real Housewives? This was like a perfect bank-shot of comedy.
6. Jeff showing up at the party to woo Jessa in his desperate middle-aged-crazy way. (Bonus points for dancing worst of all, gutsy James LeGros.) Followed by Jeff getting smacked by crusty punks.
7. Shoshanna accidentally
smoking crack, thus allowing Angry Ray to show his
humane side, or at least his crack spirit guide side.
8. Angry Ray to Jessa re her feathery party outfit: Does everyone in the Age of Innocence Fan Club get one of these?
9. Your voice sounds like a bag of dying babies.
10. Enjoy going through life as yourself.Quotes by Marnie

We werent content living our life somewhere else. We saw what it wouldve been like if we stayed put and we got scared, real scared. The little bitch!)
We heard that New York is the one place you dont ever have to grow up. 80-year-olds walk the street at 2 a.m. looking for a coffee shop, parents still go out and maintain some semblance of a life. The people who live here operate on the pleasure principle. They do what feels good and are wary of having to deal with any sort of compromise.

hes exhausted from a long, sleepless night, and admittedly a wee
bit hungover. Dressed in a band tee, an oversized sweatshirt, and leather pants, Juno Temple seems really comfortable in her own skin. Shes joking around before the interview even begins and has a huge smile on despite her lack of sleep. Claiming that you say much more interesting things when youre tired so im already expecting this interview to be pretty great. Juno seems to know a lot about who she is, at age 23, the british lady is taking on the Sundance Film Festival full storm with three movies out. One of these films is Little Birds, a film about a young girl finding herself, which Juno Temple says she identifys with. Temple says
It so a movie I want people to see, I want it to kind of envoke some kind of emotion in people, I dont care what it is, but I want people to think and feel after theyve seem it. This is how she approaches all the movies she not only acts in, but also sees, among her top list of movies is Blue Valentine, True Romance and Revolution Road.
The day Juno auditioned for the film, she found out she had 45 dollars in her bank account and was due to pay two months rent, so needless to say, she invests a lot into this acting gig shes got going, calling it her addiction. With seven films out this past year, that description seems very dead-on. Since age four, after watching a scene in la belle et la bete where Belle transforms into a woman
covered in diamonds, Juno realized that acting is what she aimed to do. With pursed lips and doe-eyes she awaits all my questions to be asked, and then dives into them as if she only has a moment to respond. This girl knows what she wants. Shes fealess, and that shows in her acting, and all of the nudity scenes that she participates in during her films, and when I ask her if she minds taking part in them, she just shakes her head and says,
Trust and Honesty are very important to this actress. She needs to have complete trust in a project in order to take part and feels as an actor she needs to be honest with

her audience. If you ask me, these are some very deep emotions about films. About Elgin James, I feel fearless around him, I cant live without him anymore, hes one of my favorite people on the planet. She obviously has a lot of respect for the man who directed the film, the gentle soul who inspired the dark film. Kay Panabaker, Junos co-star in the movie feels the same way about thier amazing director, and also seems to have a self-respect for Juno, calling her a rockstar. The two have a unique dynamic, one complementing the others polar opposite personality, and Juno showing her love for Kay, kissing her on the cheek and holding hands. At one point, Juno tell Kay that she loves her, and they spend some time bragging about eachothers talents.
In an eighteen-day shooting of the film, the team who created Little Birds, became a family fast. A Passion Project for all involved, the cast, and staff poured thier hearts into the film, and it shows on-screen. Little Birds always makes Juno cry, a very sensitive, sad movie. The actress wants to be challenged, and try everything and every kind of movie there is, even though she often finds herself in darker ones. And she will says Kay, someone who obviously believes in the brits talent, and shell be amazing at it.*
I feel fearless around him, I cant live without him anymore, hes one of my favorite people on the planet.

6 ways to avoid final stress

ave you ever seen a stress-free college student? I havent, un-less you count the freshmen who mess up the first half of the semester, say screw it to the rest and never attend class again. But thats not what Im talking about here. Stress is a huge part of the college experience, and its something we all have to deal with in life. We dont, however, have to let it get the best of us. This may come as a shock, but stress DOES NOT have to take over your life, no matter how many finals you have. You can still do well on your tests without wanting to die for an entire week I know this is a fashion site, but its also a site about college life, and finals are a huge part of that. Here are my top tips for keep-ing stress at a minimum during your hectic final exams week that is probably happening right now or very soon at your school. Just for the record, these tips actually work, and the list doesnt include any cliche crap that doesnt, like deep breathing exercises.
H
Avoid stressful people.Stress actually is contagious. During exam week, resist the urge to have a study session with your super-tense friend, especially if shes complaining about all the work she has to do and breaking pencils all over the place. Her stress will only add to your stress.

Eat healthy and exercise. This seems like a no-brainer, but its a wonder how many people forget it. Skip the sugar, which will make you crash, and go for snacks like granola bars, healthy cereal or fruits and veggies to keep your blood sugar stable. If youre study-ing for a long period of time, eat some protein too. Also, try to get some form of exercise. Even a 10 minute walk will leave you calmer and more focused.
Just say NO.I dont mean to drugs, although Im not recommending them or anything. What you need to say no to are the people who want to take up your time. There will probably be a friend who needs to talk to you for hours about her life, or a keg party the night before your final, and if you say yes, youll probably be tempted to blow off studying. Resist the urge. Say no to the distractions and be selfish for a day. You want a good GPA, right?
Force yourself to take breaks. For every hour or so that you work, take a 10 or 15 minute break. Let your-self do whatever you want (check Face-book, check out that guy sitting nearby, stare off into space, call a friend, etc.) for those 10-15 mins, then start working again. This gives your brain a little rest and will help keep you more focused when you are actually doing work.
Visualize it all going right. This is actually my favorite tip of all, even though it sounds kind of nuts. Imagine your-self taking the test and feeling confident that you know all the information. Picture getting all of the answers right, and focus on how relaxed you feel. Then picture the A on your test paper. When you imagine a happy end-ing, thats often what happens, because you make the decisions that lead to it without even realizing.
If youve studied all you can, get up your confidence! When test-time rolls around, its time to get yourself into confidence mode. Youve prepared as much as you could, and now its time to ace the test. The tip here is to do whatever works to convince yourself you are going to do really well. Again, I know this tip sounds a little crazy but you just have to try it for yourself. I think youll like the results.
