ABAQUS ScopeThis world is non-linear.
Perform meaningful linear and nonlinear analysis. Typical cases:o o o o o o o Large motion of an elastic-plastic pipe hitting a rigid wall; Inelastic buckling collapse of a thin-walled elbow Explosive loading of an elastic, viscoplastic thin ring Consolidation under a footing Buckling of a composite shell with a hole Deep drawing of a metal sheet

ABAQUS Drawing1. Point 2. Line 3. AreaOperate Forming 3D Volume Individual part can be duplicated and then modify to form new part. Operate: 1. Extrude 2. Revolve 3. Sweep Assembly 1. Individual part: Translate, rotate 2. Two part: Face to face, coaxial, edge to edge, . Module name Sketch Select 2D plane as reference to expand and modify
PartAssembly
Forming your final modeling objectNote: Different parts in assembly have NO interaction even they are physically contacted.
Workout Example
100 cube with a 50 radius 1/8 ball How to draw this in AutoCAD or SolidWorks? We draw with ABAQUS/CAE

Interaction --- Parts RelationsInteraction is to tell ABAQUS about how the parts and parts interact and self-interact.
Workout ExampleIn contact, many times it is hard to choose the contact plane from the assembled part. Define the surfaces in the assembly by showing one part at a time.
Part Assembled with two parts Want these two parts tied together by two planes in the middle.

Define Interactions --- SummarySince ABAQUS only checks the nodes of the slave planes, we selected the planes with large deformation as slave planes. From material point of view, we usually choose soft material (finer meshing) as slave planes (regions). Same material does not matter.

Meshing --- Partition to Form Simple Part
How Simple is called Simple? Color is Green. Color Orange --- Too Complex.
Meshing StepsTry to turn everything into green by cutting parts (virtually becausethey are still connected and cutting is just for meshing).
Using these tools
Meshed Part
SummaryABAQUS is user-friendly and easy. ABAQUS HOWTO: learn two examples in Appendixes B and C of book Getting Started with ABAQUS. Hope all of us start to rock-and-roll with ABAQUS.
