April 20, 2015 Carolyn C. Meltzer, M.D. and Pina C. Sanelli, M.D. Co-Chairs, 2015 Women in Neuroradiology Leadership Award Re: Nomination of Erin Simon Schwartz, M.D. Dear Drs. Meltzer and Sanelli, and Committee Members: I am delighted to support the nomination of Erin Simon Schwartz, M.D., for the 2015 Women in Neuroradiology Leadership Award. As the Chair of the Department of Radiology at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), it is important to recognize those with great leadership promise, and Dr. Schwartz is one of the members of the Department with the greatest leadership potential. At CHOP, in addition to her leadership experience as Medical Director of the Laurie Family Foundations’ Magnetoencephalography Imaging Center, Dr. Schwartz has represented the department of Radiology on a number of hospital-wide committees, including having served as the Vice-Chair of the Institutional Review Board and on the Bylaws Committee of the CHOP Medical Staff. Her knowledge and understanding of systems has been particularly instrumental in her work with the Emergency Preparedness team, having represented our department on the Mass Casualty Incident Task Force and expertly preparing and overseeing our outstanding departmental response during a hospital-wide live mass casualty exercise. Dr. Schwartz is not only a great educator but also has been outstanding at having organizing roles in many educational endeavors. I chose her as the Director of our Departmental CME course “Pediatric Radiology: State-of-the-Art”, which was extremely successful thanks to her efforts. At a regional and national level, Dr. Schwartz has shown very impressive leadership skills, having chaired several Committees at the ASNR. She also has been past President of the American Society of Spine Radiology and the Eastern Neuroradiological Society, and is the incoming President of the American Society of Pediatric Neuroradiology. She has also been Program Chair at several national meetings. On the clinical side, Dr. Schwartz’s leadership has been evident in her work with the development and implementation of a new clinical pathway for the evaluation and treatment of patients with suspected ventricular shunt complication. This new pathway has greatly reduced the radiation exposure for this vulnerable population and has been embraced by the institution. Most recently, Dr. Schwartz was selected to present this work for our enterprise Leadership Briefing, as a model of the standard that the Office of Patient Quality and Safety hopes to achieve with all of its projects. I want to highlight that nominating Dr. Schwartz for leadership positions or selecting her to represent our Department at CHOP comes from my confidence in her abilities as well as my respect for her approach to leading. She is extremely intelligent, organized and competent, and is remarkably effective at bringing groups to successful completion of tasks. Dr. Schwartz and I have maintained an ongoing conversation as to how she may utilize and further develop her leadership skills. The opportunity to take part in the 2015 American College of Radiology Leadership Summit will serve in further supporting her efforts. I believe Dr. Schwartz will be a notable contributor among the participants in the program and, as she strives forward as a leader in the profession, further enhance the field of Radiology. In summary, Erin Simon Schwartz, M.D. has both the experience and promise to become an outstanding leader at CHOP and in the field of Neuroradiology and I give her nomination my strongest support. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I may provide further information. Sincerely,
Diego Jaramillo, M.D., M.P.H. Radiologist-in-Chief and Van Alen Chair The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Professor of Radiology Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania DJ/cn
