Cradle of the white-and-blue lozenge emblem of Bavaria The typical Bavarian character of Bogen has its origins in the past. Did you know that it is the home of the white-and-blue lozenge pattern? At one time this pattern represented the coat of arms of the Counts of Bogen. In the year 1204 the beautiful Countess Ludmilla of Bogen married Duke Ludwig I of the Wittelsbach dynasty. After the death of their last son the white-and-blue lozenges were adopted by the Wittelsbach House and thus became the heart-sha- ped shield of the Bavarian coat of arms. Attractions in BogenGuided tours: during the tour you will learn a lot of interesting things about thelocal history of Bogen. You will visit the town square, Bachgasse (a lane with woo-den houses), the old town hall (visit to the vaulted cellar). Duration 1,5h, freeentrance, voluntary contributions are welcome. Stadtpfarrkirche St. Florian: the parish church was erected in 1486. Between1931 and 1935 the building was extended by incorporating an old school houseand the sexton’s house. Between 1969 and 1970 the interior of the church was com-pletely redesigned. Modern winged altar (1984). Frescoes dating from 1521. Opendaily. Neues Rathaus: the Neues Rathaus (the New Town Hall), which the town pur-chased in 1978, is the sixth town hall in the history of Bogen and once housed thecounty court (1900 – 1980). It marks the southern boundary of the town squareand as can be seen, its architecture differs from the other buildings. Open Mon-Fri,8 am -noon. Information: Town of Bogen, Tel. +49 9422/505-0

Monument of the “Oasiedl“ (hermit of Bogen) and the 12 heads of the apostles:on the gable of the house at Obere Bergstraße 18 three arch bases of the LateGothic are built into the wall. They originally adorned the secularized church ofSt.Jakob. In front of the house is the monument of the “Oasiedl”.

Altes Rathaus (The Old Town Hall): from 1843 to 1980 the old town hall waslocated in the middle of the town square. The gable of the present building of 1951with a tocsin and the coat of arms of Bogen is a reproduction of the oldest originalfacade of the townhall. In front of it in the square stands a modern bronze fountainwhich tells the story of the Counts of Bogen.

Museums in BogenKreis- und Heimatmuseum (museum of local history): the permanent collectionof the museum (housed in the former barn of the parish on the Bogenberg) containsitems of traditional handicraft, guild artefacts, artefacts relating to rural life andwork, as well as religious art from various periods. It is supplemented by specialexhibitions. Attractions around BogenPfarr- und Wallfahrtskirche Mariä Himmelfahrt on the BogenbergIn the 12th and 13th century the church of Bogen and that of the counts of Bogenmerged to form one parish. At approximately the same time in the year 1104–according to a pious legend - a Marian pilgrimage was established. Until 1803 theparish, the pilgrimage and a priorate were administered by the Benedictine monksin Oberalteich. The unique and extraordinary statue in stone dating from the late13th century shows the pregnant Virgin and represents the oldest picture of theMadonna which has been uninterruptedly venerated in Bavaria up to and includingtoday. The present building was built in 1463, from this time on its interiors hasbeen changed several times (see also church guide). Each year a pilgrimage with agiant votive candle takes place on Whitsunday.Guided tours: duration 30 min., free entrance, voluntary contributions to thechurch are welcome. Pfarrkirche St. Peter und Paul, OberalteichThe former monastery church (1622 – 1630) ranks as one of the most impressiveattractions in Eastern Bavaria. The monumental galleried church was built accor-ding to the plans of the abbot Veit Höser. KulturForum Oberalteich The KulturForum – which is located in the renovated area of the mill and the gra-nary of the former monastery - has become a cultural centre which offers more than70 venues and alternating exhibitions. Furthermore the nearby “old town hall”houses a permanent exhibition of the local history of Oberalteich. Margaretenkirche PfellingThe church is romantically situated on the banks of the Danube. Late Romanesquefoundations. Pfarrkirche St. Andreas in Degernbach and Kapelle in SteflingAn elegant church, erected in the early Rococo period (1735). The chapel inStefling was built in 1487 and has become famous because of an equestrian proces-sion which takes place each year on December 26 in honour of St Stephen. EventsFestivals & fairs

Carnival processionThe biggest Carnival procession in Eastern Bavaria with more than 1000 par-ticipants. The procession takes place in Bogen annually on Carnival Sunday, startingat 1pm.

PilgrimagesPfingstkerzenwallfahrt (pilgrimage with a giant votive candle), each year onWhitsunday at 1 pm. The pilgrimage is one of the biggest traditional events inLower Bavaria. Every year one day before Whitsunday about 400 worshippers fromHolzkirchen go on a 75 km walk to behold the holy relic on the Bogenberg. Thepilgrimage ends there on Whitsunday. The giant votive candle which is 15 meterslong and weighs about 50 kg is a pine trunk swathed in wax. It is carried on theshoulders, the last stretch from the town square onto the Bogenberg even in anupright position.Jugendwallfahrt (youth pilgrimage): a special experience for young people withmass, live music and discussions, mostly in May
