AAOMS NATIONAL INSURANCE COMPANY

RISK RETENTION GROUP

RISK MAWAGEME)ST SEMINAR

Tuesday, September 28 890 am - 5:OO pm

The AAOMS National Insurance Company Risk Retention Group is sponsoring a

one-day Risk Management Seminar focusing on high frequency practice patterns that

often result in lawsuits. This seminar is limited to AAOMS members and their staff.

The seminar continues the 1992 theme with “Back to Basics II.” This refresher course

has been designed to re-acquaint practitioners with the day to day pitfalls involved in

their work. We will be discussing such issues as wrongful tooth extraction, which is the

most common, and theoretically, the most avoidable claim, and offering suggestions

on how to control the problem. Infection and resultant patient and legal effects will be

detailed. Techniques for lessening the likelihood of paresthesia, TMJ and third molar

surgery claims will be presented, as well as case studies on these types of claims. A

significant amount of time will be devoted to resharpening charting skills and

improving resultant record keeping ability, both for patient histories and potential

litigation. In addition, we will review the “how” and “when” of incident and claim

reporting.

A new program component has been developed to grant us all insight into the

motivation triggering lawsuits and claims: “Why Do Patients Sue Me?" This section

focuses on patients’ point of view and why legal advice is sought.

Individuals who attend a seminar in its entirety and successfully complete the

examination will be eligible to receive a 5% premium credit which will be applied

toward the next two policy years for professional liability coverage through AAOMS

National. In order to receive the 5% premium credit, Risk Management Seminar

attendance must occur prior to the start of the policy period.

Registration for the Risk Management Seminar is separate from the Annual

Meeting registration.

Registration and/or questions will be handled by Nancy Stangel or Patricia Litwin of

AAOMS National Insurance Company at 708/928-0041 or 800/522-6670.
