SECTION A
PLAN OF ACTION CHALKED OUT BY THE IQAC IN THE BEGINNING
OF THE YEAR TOWARDS QUALITY ENHANCEMENT
With the first batch in the CBCSS pattern entering the second year, each Department
and the institution as a whole were determined to be ready to meet the demands of the
system in its second year. The final year undergraduate students who remained in the
earlier system too are to be catered. The Open Course, which is to be implemented in
Semester V in the forthcoming academic year, posed to be a challenge that demands
proper planning, systematic monitoring and effective delivery. The college took
measures in this regard:
a. Time-table planning and attendance monitoring were made effective.
b. Making use of the changed stand of the Government favouring recruitment of
faculty, measures to appoint new teachers in existing vacancies were planned.
c. Organize various events to enhance academic interest and wider insight
through seminars and workshops, for students as well as teachers.
d. Plans were made to modify the feedback system, especially from among
students.
e. Functioning of the College library was to be developed by acquiring new
books and subscribing to more academic journals. Barcoding and labeling of
books were to be continued to include new purchases.
f. Infrastructural development was to be done to address existing needs.

SECTION B
1 ACTIVITIES REFLECTING THE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE
INSTITUTION
The thrust of the year was development of leadership, which is a point of significance
in the statement of objectives. Starting at the Departmental level, various activities
were conducted to nurture student leadership and involvement. Students were
motivated to participate in co-curricular programmes. Training and motivation to
enter competitive arenas were boosted through coaching programmes. Social
awareness and community feeling were nurtured.
2. NEW ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES INITIATED (UG AND PG)
During the year 2010-11 four new programmes of the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka
Academi (Deemed University) were introduced viz.,
1. Certification in Indian Classical Music
2. Diploma in Indian Classical Music
3. Certification in Indian Classical Dance
4. Diploma in Indian Classical Dance
3. INNOVATIONS IN CURRICULAR DESIGN AND TRANSACTION
a. Open Courses
All Departments having Undergraduate programs took sincere efforts in selecting and
giving shape to Open Courses which are to be implemented in the next academic year.
The following steps were taken:
Many teachers of the College were involved in developing the syllabi of the
Open Courses at the University level. The Department of English was entrusted
CMS College, Kottayam. AQAR 2010-’11 page 3
by the University the task of preparing the syllabus and question bank of the
Open Course “English for Careers” at the University level.
Prof. Sindhu Thomas (Dept. of Mathematics) was appointed as General
Coordinator to monitor the preparation and implementation of the Open Course
in the college
Every Department conducted staff meetings to select the Course to be offered by
them from lists provided by the University. Coordinators were appointed in each
Department, and they studied the syllabi and gave shape and plan for effective
delivery of the program.
Coordinators prepared PowerPoint presentations on each Open Course to help
the students understand the concept and scope of each course and make a choice
of their interest.
Response Sheets were collected from students on which their choices and
priorities were marked.
Open Courses were allotted to students on the basis of their choice and also the
credit earned in the earlier semester exams.
b. Faculty Involvement
Dr.Babu Cherian, Associate Professor in the Dept. of Malayalam played a vital role
as a member of the Board of Studies (U.G.) in designing the Open Course titled
‘Journalism-The Basic Principles’ for Mahatma Gandhi University.
Dr.Miriam Mani, Head of the Dept. of Family and Community Science and
Chairman, Post Graduate Board of Studies in Home Science was entrusted with the
restructuring of Curriculum and Syllabi of M Sc programmes in Home Science.
Dr. K V George, Head of the Dept of Botany was involved in revising and
restructuring the curriculum of M Sc Botany based on the credit-semester system.

One of the major examination reforms introduced by the Mahatma Gandhi University
is the online submission of internal marks. Under this system the course teachers and
faculty advisors submit the internal marks of the students directly to the University.
The college successfully followed it.
Further, the college has taken measures to improve the infrastructure facilities to
conduct the examinations without disturbing classes. This is particularly significant as
CMS College, Kottayam. AQAR 2010-’11 page 5
the college is a venue for several examinations of the university for students under
private registration mode.
6. CANDIDATES QUALIFIED: NET/SLET/GATE ETC.
