It is hard to believe that it has been almost 3 years since I had the good fortune to be elected to serve as Secretary-Treasurer of the AAES. As the Secretary-Treasurer, I had the chance to work with many excellent and committed surgeons who have helped make this association strong and vibrant.

As I look back over the last few years, there is much for our association to be proud of. We have added three new categories of membership: Allied Specialist, Candidate, and Resident/Fellow. In the spring of 2009, our total membership was 351. As Electron Kebebew, chair of the Membership Committee has reported, we now have 489 members.

The AAES has also changed by increasing our internet presence dramatically. It all started when then-President, Janice Pasieka proposed the “Calgary Project” to add a patient education website to our association website. Through the

dedicated efforts of many of our members, the content of the education website was created and the site was launched. Since then, through the efforts of the IT Committee (Richard Hodin, James Lee, Janice Pasieka, Michael Yeh) and many others, the site has become increasingly visited. Recently, the volumes of visits on our patient education website have grown so large that we have had to migrate the site to a new server to provide sufficient bandwidth to handle the large numbers of visits we now have. In conjunction with the Education Committee, we are now working to expand and update the content of the site.

It has been a tremendous honor for me to serve this organization as an officer these last few years. I look forward to passing the baton on to another fortunate member at the spring meeting. Please do not hesitate to contact me if there is anything that I can do to help improve our association.

Membership in the AAES continues to grow with 489 members (213 Active, 50 Corresponding, 112 Senior, 10 Honorary, 12 Allied, 45 Candidate, 47 Resident/Fellow). We encourage you to support colleagues with an interest in endocrine surgery to apply for membership to the AAES. Applications will be reviewed by the Membership committee and presented to the Executive Council for approval. Names of applicants recommended for election to membership are then voted on at the annual meeting each year.

The membership application process for all categories is handled online at www.endocrinesurgery.org

Questions regarding applications may be directed to the AAES administration headquarters at telephone: 913.402.7102, or by email at: information@ endocrinesurgery.org

Education & Research CommitteeSareh Parangi, MD

Dr. Sareh Parangi, Chair of the Education and Research Committee (ERC) and other members of the committee (Drs. Gauger, McLeod, Milas, Miller, Sippel, Solorzano and Sturgeon) look forward to seeing you in Iowa. Our committee continues to help with the AAES’ patient education endeavors by assisting in updating the web portal, selecting AAES statements for publication in the journal Surgery and interacting with the AAES Foundation to coordinate fund raising efforts in support of AAES research initiatives.

The committee is reviewing the outstanding proposals received for the Paul LoGerfo Research Award from junior investigators interested in a career in academic endocrine surgery. We will announce the selected proposal in Iowa. The Education and Research Committee would like to

congratulate Dr. Naris Nilubol who was awarded the 2011 Paul LoGerfo Research Award for his proposal entitled “Identification and Validation of Novel Anticancer Compounds for the Treatment of Adrenocortical Cancer”. We look forward to hearing about his research results in Iowa on Sunday April 29th at 12:30pm, during the opening sessions after the new member introductions.

In the meantime, don’t forget to register for the Paul LoGerfo 5K Fun Run/Walk in Iowa City. Your participation is imperative for a variety of reasons: camaraderie, fun, exercise and fund raising for the organization’s research fund. Slow runners are especially encouraged to join the run! Remember that the chair of this committee does not want to come in last again!

I am very happy to inform the membership that we have renewed our strong relationship with the journal SURGERY for three more years. SURGERY has agreed to increase the number of published papers from our meeting in the December issue from 34 to 40 manuscripts. Furthermore, the winner of the “Best Interesting Case” competition will also have the option of publishing that case report in the December issue of the journal.

We would also like to thank SURGERY for providing two grants to the AAES: one to support the transcription of our meeting discussion and the other to supplement the annual Paul LoGerfo Research Award.

I am always looking for members and endocrine surgery fellows to review manuscripts for SURGERY, ANNALS OF SURGICAL ONCOLOGY, and ANNALS OF SURGERY. Please email me at [email protected] if you would like to be an ad hoc reviewer.

Just a reminder about the upcoming deadlines associated with AAES manuscripts.

The mission of the Paul LoGerfo Educational Research Fund is to support education and research in the field of Endocrine Surgery as a tribute to our former President, Dr. Paul LoGerfo, who was very much interested in education and clinical research in Endocrine Surgery. With Dr. LoGerfo’s untimely death during his Presidency of our Association in 2003, the Paul LoGerfo Educational Research Fund was begun in his honor.

Contributions are accepted from AAES members, patients and families to provide support to educational and research activities of the Membership. Monetary gifts, securities, insurance, estate bequests or donation of any other asset is appropriate and greatly appreciated. Contributions will be solicited yearly from the membership with Annual Dues; however money can be donated at any time of the year online by clicking the “Donate Online” button on the AAES website.

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

Join us for the 33rd AAES Annual Meeting in Iowa City, Iowa on April 29 – May 1, 2012. We are pleased to announce that this year’s meeting will feature as many as 40 oral presentations, a notable increase from years prior. There will also be interesting cases, poster competitions, exhibits and plenty of networking opportunities. We’ll kick off the event on Saturday, April 28th with the annual golf and tennis tournaments and a tour of the Amana Colonies, seven quaint villages just a few miles from Iowa City featuring specialty shops,

wineries, and restaurants. The Young Endocrine Surgeons Social will take place Saturday evening in downtown Iowa City. Start your Sunday morning with the 5K Fun Run to benefit the Paul LoGerfo Educational Research Fund or enjoy Yoga. Note Of Gratitude

I am pleased to report that the Program Committee has arranged an outstanding program for the 2012 AAES annual meeting. The meeting will formally commence mid-morning on Sunday, April 29, with a multi-disciplinary thyroid cancer tumor board moderated by Dr. Gerard Doherty, followed by a presentation from Dr. Bryan McIver on the medical management of thyroid cancer. Other highlights include the historical lecture on Sunday afternoon by Dr. Murray Brennan on re-operative parathyroid surgery. On Monday morning, both the Presidential Address by Dr. Ashok Shaha and the invited guest lecture by Dr. Atul Gawande will undoubtedly be stimulating and entertaining. We received over 200 abstract submissions and the Committee has worked hard to design a very well-rounded and interesting Scientific Program. The program has been expanded from 34 to

40 oral presentations this year. Winners of the resident/fellow competition will be announced at the Gala Reception and Banquet on Monday night. In addition, approximately 50 posters will be on display; 10 of these posters have also been selected to be short oral presentations on Tuesday morning. The recipient of the resident/fellow oral poster competition will be announced at the conclusion of the meeting on Tuesday, May 1, at 12:30pm.

It has been an honor to serve as the Chair of the Program Committee this year. I thank the Committee and Ron Weigel and his team for everyone’s efforts in developing a very well-balanced, exciting and fun meeting this Spring in Iowa City.

Endocrine Surgery University report Martha Zeiger, MD

We are pleased to announce that our third annual meeting of Endocrine Surgery University (ESU) will be held March 28th and 29th, 2012. This year it will be hosted at the Methodist Institute for Technology, Innovation and Education or the “Mighty MITIE” in Houston. Similar to previous years the program will consist of panel discussions on controversies in Endocrine Surgery as well as challenging surgical cases. This year we have also added a short ultrasound course to be led by Allan Siperstein. All Endocrine Surgery fellows in North America, one international fellow and one Head and Neck fellow will attend this year. Once again we would

like to thank our colleagues at AACE, Amy Bruns, Beverly Hastings, and Don Jones for their assistance in procuring education grants and running the course and, thank AAES leadership and all the Program Directors for their ongoing support of this annual event.

AACE Liaison report Nancy D. Perrier, MD

It is a pleasure to be the AAES representative on the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) board of directors. The board meets quarterly and the agenda is always full for a two day period. The AACE organization consists of endocrinologists and associated specialists. As of February 24, 2012, AACE has approximately 5,235 domestic members and 1,388 international members. The AACE organization has more than 50 staff members that are active in multiple legislative and educational programs. I see great benefits for our AAES members.

AACE Educational Services (AES), a division of AACE, specializes in the development and management of continuing medical education programs. This past year the AES held over 20 half -day programs across the United States and Puerto Rico to educate primary care physicians on endocrine disease. 2011 focused on diabetes but plans for 2012-2013 are to launch a series of programs focused on thyroid disease and bone and calcium metabolic disorders. This will be a great opportunity for endocrine surgeons to

contribute and participate in extended education. For more information on future programs and the services that AES provides, please visit www.aes.aace.com.

In January 2012, for the 18th consecutive year, AACE launched its very successful BLUE PAISLEY AACE Thyroid Awareness Month campaign. Through a satellite media tour, radio interviews, online campaign, EmPower Magazine distribution, participation in health fairs, distribution of blue paisley merchandise, and www.ThyroidAwareness.com Web site, we have successfully shared thyroid awareness information with more than six million people! AACE promises that just because January is over, doesn’t mean that the campaign ended. Ties, scarves and posters are available to remind you and your colleagues to be aware of thyroid disease. Visit www.ThyroidAwareness.com for more information or to request blue paisley merchandise! AAES members are also encouraged to visit the AACE website and request free copies of the Empower magazine for

distribution in your clinic and patient waiting areas. Empower is a quarterly publication intended to educate patients on endocrine disease. It is an efficient web-based and hard copy editorial enterprise. If you would like to contribute as an author please contact me. I will forward your name to the editorial staff as we are looking for contributors for the summer and fall issues.

AACE has actively been involved in several legislative issues that affect health care, and specifically the endocrinology specialty. AACE established a commission that will evaluate federal quality improvement activities, determine what is working and what is not in endocrine disease, and make recommendations to Congress and the Secretary of Health and Human Services about new approaches needed to improve the quality of care. In February 2012, Congress passed The Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act, H.R. 3630, that gives physicians a 10-month reprieve from a 27.4% payment cut under the Medicare Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) formula that was scheduled to take effect on March 1, when the two-month temporary tax package that was passed in December expires. However, Congress

failed to include an extension of the current payment rates for DXA bone density scans in H.R. 3630. AACE will also work with the Administration to see what, if any, relief can be provided to physicians to ensure the healthcare system’s capacity for providing osteoporosis testing and treatment services is not irrevocably diminished. To keep track of the status of these legislative actions, as well as many others that AACE is actively involved in, please visit the AACE Legislative Action Center at www.aace.com/advocacy/leg.

AACE invites all AAES members to attend the annual meeting on May 23-27, 2012, in Philadelphia, PA, for the AACE 21st Annual Scientific & Clinical Congress. The meeting will take place Memorial Day weekend. The Program Committee has put together an exciting scientific program covering numerous topical and relevant areas of interest to the endocrinologist and clinically busy endocrine surgeon. Our colleagues Janice Pasieka, Martha Zeiger and Doug Fraker will be leading breakout sessions. In addition, there are several social activities and events planned for attendees and their families including breakfast with Ben Franklin and a Freedom Tour Walk. Attending the meeting is a wonderful way to bond with our sister medical specialty. Registration is open, so be sure to visit www.am.aace.com for more information.

AACE will be exhibiting at the AAES Annual Meeting on April 28-May 1, 2012, in Iowa City, IA. I encourage all AAES members to introduce themselves to the AACE staff. The organization is well run and extremely user friendly. Free journals, patient education material, videos, media access and numerous website educational tools are available. Stop by the exhibit to hear about all of the exciting things happening at AACE. For more information about AACE and the benefits of becoming a member, please visit the website at www.aace.com.
