BARCELONA“SOCIAL HOUSING IN URBAN CONTEXT”

Barcelona has become a brand recognized worldwide, of wich more disciplines have contributed to the recognition of the city popping architecture and urbanism. Speaking of the “Barcelona Model” is telling a way of thinking about the very special city. Interventions micro urbanisme in the públic space during de 80’s, and later the Olympic Games in 1992, and following the Forum of Cultures in 2004 were the cornerstones of an urbantransformation very important. The revitalization of the city has provided added value to existint Works of Catalan Modernism. The birth of a Language of their own has led to concrete proposals for públic spaces much compromise with the city. From the first place “hard”, the Plaça de Sants, to get to the Parc Diagonal Mar, there was an evolution that culminates today with the recovery of the domèstic courts of the Barcelona’s Eixample, designed by Ildefons Cerdà.

One of the main elements of the “Barcelona Model” is the quality of residential buildings. The optimization of all types, especially in public housing units, brings together the knowledge inherited from the great architects of the ‘30s to ‘70s as Sert, Bonet, Coderch, Mitjans and Barba Corsini, among others. During the years of democracy were built several housing projects have become cultural references, among which we can mention those designed by Bohigas-Martorell-Mackey, Correa-Milà, Nadal, Pascual, Bofill, Viaplana-Piñón, Clotet-Paricio, Torres-Martínez Lapeña, Bonell, Llinàs, Ferrater ...Currently a younger generation of architects has been able to address the issue of new housing programs and, at the same time, sought to respond to the new social demands and urban areas. Many of these projects have the merit of proposing new types and new ways to integrate urban public space, creating new synergies urban real estate during the boom years had been abandoned.

For this reasons we show these interesting housing projects, both for relations with the públic space and for their contribution to the construction os a Barcelona that is constantly evolving.

102 SOCIAL HOUSING. POBLENOU, BARCELONA

Volumetric arrangement:Three main substraction operations were set for all the dwellings to enjoy a minimum of 3h of direct solar radiation every day: a central void, the removal of the corner and the partial shortening of three levels at the Almogavers Street side.

Organization:The central court is the main area to access retail, stairwell and the public space through the freed corner. The main building is organized with 5 cores that are connected with elevated pathways in the lower levels and that become independent on the top ones organizing the different typologies of dwellings.

Chromatism:The situation of the building in the lot, in the corner of the island, and the relation that it establishes with the public space that crosses the island gives to this site a character attractive and singular.

The definition of the volumes and the colors of the project depend on this urban situation and to its internal special organization.

The dwellings:Their flexibility is based on the adaptability of the housings to different uses along the time. This capacity is achieved by arranging the structure in the fixed elements of the building, and to group the services in compact cores.
