Fake Campaigns Taking Rounds in the Name of Neera Sugar Project
At a time when Coconut Development Board and State governments across the country are trying to give a facelift to the coconut farmers through Neera projects, a set of people are launching campaigns trying to lure coconut farmers and general public for earning quick money showing the benefits of getting associated with such a lucrative business. One such organization named Kerala Peoples Forum (KPF), have launched the campaign by publishing an advertisement in one of the national English newspapers published from Kochi dated 12th July 2015, by asking the farmers and the public to join the project by undertaking their coconut palms and other assets as investments in KPF.
According to a government Order (P) 27/2014/Ex. Dept. (SRO116/2014) dated 14th February 2014, only the below mentioned centres have got permission to produce and market Neera. They are: (1) Coconut Producer’s Federations registered under Coconut Development Board, (2) Bonafide Jaggery Producers, (3) Kerala State Beverages (Manufacturing and Marketing) Corporation Ltd, (4) Kerala Agriculture University, (5) Agro Industries Corporation and (6) Coconut Development Corporation. Apart from these agencies, instructions have been given to the Department of Excise to give permission to KERAFED for the production and marketing of Neera through a G.O dated 22nd June 2015.
Coconut Development Board provides financial support of Rs. 50 lakh for Neera projects according to the projects submitted by the Coconut Producer Companies, which are the apex bodies of coconut producer’s federations (CPFs). Out of the 352 Coconut Producers’ Federations, only 173 have been given licenses to tap Neera so far. According to the new G.O, instructions have been given to the Department of Excise to give licenses to all the federations who have applied for the same. Farmers and general public are requested to carefully consider before pledging your coconut gardens and other assets in the hands of such people keeping the above said facts in mind.
