Alaska Peninsula – Dog Salmon River LodgeOn Sept 14th, after being stuck in King Salmon for 2 days due to weather, the crew arrived to open the lodge for the fall season. Dee had arrivedon the 11th to find grass 3' tall on the runway. After a day of mowing he was able to use the runaway to pick us up in Pilot Point. We were now behind 2days in camp preparation, but our moose hunters were arriving on the 15th.

The good news was, there was some legal bulls in the valley. Greg and Debbie Black arrived and started hunting moose on the 16th. Greg took anice 60" bull, that Jerry called into 75 yards, on the 17th. Greg then took 2 wolves from the same moose lookout on his hunt. Fishing was great duringtheir hunt.

John Shuler was back on his quest to take a wolf and wolverine, after missing both in 2015. John shot 2 wolves from the main camp. Nowolverines were seen this fall. John has taken a 10' bear, 65" moose, dall sheep, mountain goat and caribou on previous hunts with us.

The remaining guides and bear hunters arrived, only to find high winds and fog. We had 20 people at the main lodge, waiting for the weather to clear.Finally, everyone was out to the spike camps and ready to bear hunt.

Bowhunter Neil Summers set the bear spotting record, seeing 61 bears in one day, nine sows with 3 cubs each and one with 4 cubs,feeding in the salmon stream at one time. Neil was holding out for a 9' boar, which he never got. My other four bowhunters all had shots,and took 2 nice bears. Jason Bleyens took the largest bear, and a big wolf, with Tim Cardillo following close behind. Mac Varner also took a nice wolf.

Dennis and Lisa Wingrove were back again and Lisa took her bear. Dennis is looking for a 10' bear and is coming back in May 2018. Bob Young took anice bear and a beautiful white wolf on his hunt. Ray Harrelson took a nice bear after watching a monster digging a den out of range.

Dan Mikutel took a nice bear with his pistol from the main camp, completing his lifelong dream.

We have continued to improve the Dog Salmon River Lodge, and it remains one of the only lodges in Alaska where you can walk from camp and shoota 60" moose, or a 10' brown bear and sleep in cabins with heaters and electric lights. At the lodge we have a main cabin, 2 client cabins, a guide's bunkhouse,shower house, storage building and a meat and skinning shed/shop and 2 weatherports. We also have satellite phone service at the lodge and each spikecamp. Fishing is always great in the fall with Silver Salmon, Dolly Varden Trout and Arctic Char caught right at the lodge.

This season was the 30th year that I have owned, operated the Dog Salmon River Lodge and hunted this area. Thanks again to all of you who arrivedas strangers and went away as friends, after sharing experiences that will never be forgotten.
