The American Craft Council’s home décor exhibition, “Make Room: Modern Design Meets Craft,” has been popular with the public and interior designers alike – illustrating craft in context for thousands of show attendees. For this year’s theme, “In Space and Time,” ACC is asking designers to create room vignettes inspired by not only select objects of fine craft, but also by iconic images from the 1940s to today. Each decade’s image has been carefully curated by ACC to share the history of craft and design in honor of our magazine’s 75th anniversary.

Each designer will have the opportunity to depict the essence of a particular decade’s style and show how the cultural mores of the time influenced the design aesthetic. How far each designer’s imagination will travel through time to help us visualize space is yet to be seen!

Your opportunityDesigners will have the opportunity to select one decade (spanning from the 1940s to the future). Designers will then work with two to three pieces of fine craft made by the more than 650 artists exhibiting at this year’s American Craft Show in Baltimore on February 24 – 26, 2017, at the Baltimore Convention Center.

Be inspiredYour setting should be a reflection of your design style. Be it contemporary or classic, elegant or eclectic, your vignette can be anything from a kitchen to an outdoor entertainment space, a dining room to a media room, a bath, a bar, or a bedroom. The key is to use your imagination to either metaphorically or literally communicate the essence of the decade you select.

Please let us know if you are interested in designing a craft-inspired setting and rank which decades would be your first through fourth choices on or by November 4, 2016.

Once you agree to participate and have been assigned a decade to design around, we ask that you submit the following items by November 18, 2016, in order for us to meet our American Craft magazine publishing deadline:

• A high-resolution, professional color photograph of yourself (300 dpi or higher at 5 by 7 inches)

• Your favorite design tip

In early December, we will email you a link to images of our ACC artists’ work so you can select 2-3 objects (finely crafted out of glass, ceramics, wood, metal, fiber, and mixed media) that inspire you. Please rank your top 5-6 choices so we can do our best to match you.

Jillian Downing or Jamie Watt Arnold from Profiles will contact you on or before December 14, 2016, to confirm that the pieces you selected are available.

On or before December 20, 2016, please submit materials for your comprehensive web profile (see page 2).

Keep in mind that craft pieces that are aesthetically appropriate to a particular decade are the stars of your setting. All other decorative items and accessories should be used to complement the craft.

A list of vendors who provide furniture, decor, wall coverings, rugs, etc. to create your setting is due on or before February 10, 2017. We will acknowledge all vendors in on-site signage.

“I chose to feature a room with a West Coast influence, specifically with a southern California vibe. SoCal street style is cool and casual, with a hint of bohemian, and décor trends have followed that aesthetic. With so many bungalow and ranch homes, there are nods to midcentury modern design everywhere out there, and this is an influence I am excited to explore.”

About the American Craft CouncilNo one understands the world of artful living better than the American Craft Council. As a national, nonprofit, educational organization, ACC has shaped the artisanal craft movement for decades, serving as a craft chronicler, tastemaker, convener, and provocateur through its bimonthly magazine American Craft, annual juried shows presenting artists and their work, thought leadership conferences, awards for excellence, a research library, workshops, and seminars.
