Aaron Jamison has been diagnosed with colon cancer, and depending on how his treatment goes, has any- where from 3 to 9 months to live. In an effort to not leave his family stuck with mounting medical bills and to also pay for his cremation, Aaron has come up with a unique advertising scheme. He is selling advertisement space on his urn to local businesses. In addition, Aaron has also setup a web site to accept donations from any- one who would like to contrib- ute. His web site is at http:// judasfor- given. blogspot. com.” “Tennessee archivist Wayne Moore is conducting a multi-year Civil War memorabilia tour. Ten- nessee archivists are trying to beef up the state’s library of Civil War documentation by asking people to dust off their brass buttons, old family photos and handwritten let- ters that have survived from the 1860s. State historians plan to hit every county in Tennessee as part of an effort to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. You can read more in an article by Blake Farmer at http://www.vpr.net/ npr/126282187/.” This is being done to celebrate the 150-year anniversary. Digital photos are being taken of the items anyone wishes to bring out and share. I’m not sure when they will hit Haywood County, but if I find out I’ll have it make sure you know about it. And here’s another rather ironic story! “Charles Darwin’s family suffered from the deleterious effects of inbreeding, suggests a new study that serves as ironic punctuation to the evolutionary theorist’s life work. Pioneer of the theory that genetic traits affect survival of both in- dividual organisms and species, Darwin wondered in his own life- time if his marriage to first cousin Emma Wedgwood was having “the evil effects of close interbreeding” that he had observed in plants and animals. Three of their chil- dren died before age 10, two from infec- tious dis- eases. The survivors were often ill, and out of the six long-term marriages that resulted, only half produced any children. According to re- searchers at Ohio State University and Spain’s Universidad de Santi- ago de Compestela, that alone is a “suspicious” sign that the Darwins suffered from reproductive prob- lems. You can read more in an arti- cle by Zo Macintosh in the Live- Science web site at http://www. livescience.com/history/charles- darwin-inbreeding-100503.html.” The above articles were taken from Eastman’s Online Genealogy Newsletter, reprinted here with the permission of Richard Eastman.
