  • There is no better exercise for your heart than reaching down and helpingto lift someone up Bernard Meltzer

I am part of an Apprenticeship Association here in Arizona -- its called the

Arizona Precision MachiningApprenticeship Program (AzPMAP). Just last

week, we learned our association was awarded a grant from the Gene Haas

Scholarship Foundation. This is the 2nd year in a row we were awarded the

grant. With these monies, each and every one of our apprentices will have

the ability to take the classes they need to pursue their careers as skilled

precision machinists. For all of 2015,and better yet, when we utilize all of the

funds awarded to our program, we can apply for a new grant. This program

is changing the lives for many individuals. Some are young, but many are people with families

who lost their jobs in other careers, and just didnt know how to get back into the workforce. This

program and the generous grant we received will have such a positive impact on these apprentices.

We dont all have the financial ability to donate huge sums of money to help others, but we can all

still make a difference in others lives. As I do each issue, I have the opportunity to interview small

businesses in our industry and I write the articles about them.As you read through this issue, you

will see many examples of people in our industry giving back.At DNKB Inc., a start-up company is

hiringVeterans,Disabled Persons, and other underutilized people in our economy.AtVoodoo 13,a

very successful business owner who was manufacturing his products overseas felt compelled to give

back here locally, and so he his bringing all manufacturing back to the United States to help employ

people locally. At Profiles Tool & Engineering, the company makes a regular practice of helping

engineering students learn hands-on manufacturing in his shop through his internship program.

My fabulous photographer for 10 years now, Robbie Barrkman, had to step down from doing the

photography for our Shop Profiles. He is a business owner, and his schedule has just gotten too hectic.

He needed to simplify, and focus on his business that is growing so rapidly (CoatingTechnologies).

Robbie didnt leave me in a bind, however. He knew of a photographer who is just building his

business, and Robbie worked an arrangement that would be beneficial to me, to himself, and to

our new cover photographer,Takashi Sato. In fact, Robbie andTakashi each consider the other to

be their Sensei, and both are the Grasshopper in different aspects of their relationship. I will

miss Robbie, and look forward to working withTakashi!

This issue features a few new businesses in our industry, including DNKB Inc. and SPENG, to

name a few. Many of our readers are directly responsible for selecting suppliers for their company.

I encourage you to look carefully all the new businesses featured in our magazine, and if you have

the opportunity to do so, give them the chance to bid on your business. You will have offered

something so valuable to these new business owners -- a chance to become a successful entity.

Back toAzPMAP.About a dozen shops in theValley have found it in their heart to hire an apprentice

from the program. With few exceptions, the shops and the apprentices they take on are working

out quite well. Once in the program, many of these shops have taken on additional apprentices,

their experience has been so positive. For those shops who havent done so, I encourage you to

look carefully at how you can get involved in this initiative.

I know that I dont do enough to give back. But it is something I am focused on, something that is so

important to me, that I must find ways to do so. I know it will make me a better person. I hope that

you will also look for ways to give back, especially to our manufacturing industry. Manufacturing,

is, in fact, the backbone ofAmerican economic growth, and thankfully manufacturing job growth

increased dramatically in 2014, according to numbers from the Labor Department.

In closing, you will see several MachineTool Open Houses that are scheduled in the coming months.

Your visits to these Open Houses is guaranteed to be educational. Until next

    issue, God Bless ourTroops!

Mazak Will Spotlight Advanced Multi-Tasking Technology atAeroDef 2015

At AeroDef 2015, taking place April 20 23 in Dallas, Texas, Mazak will spotlight advanced Multi-

    Tasking technology for complex part

    production in booth 219.The company

    will demonstrate its INTEGREX

    i-200ST machine featuring the new

    MAZATROL SmoothX CNC. Show

attendees will also have the opportunity

to learn how MTConnect can be the

    communication standard for an entire

    factory.

    The small-footprint INTEGREX

    i-200ST Multi-Tasking machine features

dual turning spindles, a lower turret

and milling spindle for DONE IN

    ONE production of mid-size complex

components up to 25.9 in diameter.

Research proves Haas take on advantages of cellular machining overgeneral-purpose CNC machine tools

A recent report from theTechnische Universitt (TU) Darmstadt

in Germany demonstrates that the use of several, modestly priced

CNC machine tools arranged in a cellular configuration can

offer significant benefits over the use of more expensive special-

purpose machines configured for done-in-one operations. The

cell-configuration studied at the university features two Haas

Super Mini Mill 2 CNC machining centres and a Haas SL-10

    CNC lathe.

The idea for the research was based on a perceived absence of the principles of lean manufacturing applied

in widespread machining operations in manufacturing companies of all sizes. Although deployed widely

in assembly and process engineering environments (typically in the volume automobile manufacturing

sector), the principles of flow as a central element of lean manufacturing have not often been transferred

successfully to machining operations, and are rarely to be found at all in Europe.

In essence, cellular manufacturing is the grouping of heterogeneous equipment (in this case, CNC machine

tools) to manufacture a family or group of similar parts.Typically, the concept involves the arrangement of

machines in a U-shape to aid flow and balance work-in-progress withtakt time (the average unit production

time needed to meet customer demand).

To demonstrate the potential advantages, a com reference production line has been established at the PTWs

Process Learning Factory (CiP).The done-in-one line features two, high-specification machine tools: a

four-axis CNC horizontal machining centre with tombstone fixture, and a CNC multi-axis automatic

turning centre. The competing line, a machining cell, features two Haas Super Mini Mill 2 three-axis

machining centres and a Haas SL-10 two-

axis CNC lathe, as well as two, general

purpose CNC machining centres and a

CNC lathe supplied by another machine

    tool manufacturer.The report notes that

the investment for the two machines in

    the done-in-one line totaled 780,000,

while that for the six CNC machine

tools in the cell configuration was just

    340,000.

    An economic comparison between the

    two machining line configurations (based

on 2000 parts per week, and one worker

on each line) drew startling results. The

done-in-one line required 15 shifts to

    complete the 2000 parts.The lead-time

was 35 minutes, while the unit cost

of each part (without material) was

calculated at 3.95. Using a cellular

    machining configuration, however, it

took just 12.6 shifts to finish the 2000

    components to an identical specification,

    lead-time was reduced to 10 minutes,and

    unit cost to just 2.55.

As an alternative scenario, if two workers

are deployed in the machining cell the

unit price climbs slightly to 3.10 as a

result of the additional labour cost (but

still far cheaper than the 3.95 unit cost

of thedone-in-one line), 12.6 shifts are

reduced to 9.8,and lead-time is cut from

    10 minutes to just 7.

Using a capacity comparison based on

15 shifts, the done-in-one line will

complete 2000 parts; the cell with one

worker will finish 2377 components (a

19% increase); and the cell with two

workers will complete 3064 parts (a

    29% increase).

In all cases, the study ensured part

    accuracy and quality standards were

maintained and that the less expensive,

general purpose machines were able to

produce to a similarly high standard as

    the special-purpose machines.

Future costs could also be taken into

    consideration when comparing the

different approaches. In the case that the

production line needs to be expanded,

introducing a new machine to the

cell will be considerably cheaper than

introducing a machine to the done-in-

one line due to the large disparity in their

    individual purchase prices.

Tesla batteries could provide peak power forSRP solar users

    Arizona State University

    and Salt River Project are

    testing the potential for

    RESIDENTIAL SOLAR

    systems to connect to store

    sun-generated power in

    batteries to use during peak

    power demand periods and

overnight. And batteries built byTesla Motors could play a part.

The research project comes on the heels of an announcement by Tesla

CEO Elon Musk that it will be marketing a consumer battery for storing

solar-generated power within the next six months.

With Tesla accelerating the availability and cutting the EXPENSE of

residential batteries for solar, SRP expects its solar customers will begin

adding the backup batteries to their installations.

The technology for efficient and AFFORDABLE consumer batteries

is advancing quickly, said Lori Singleton, SRPs director for emerging

customer programs.SRP is using this project to explore all possibilities

in meeting the needs of its solar customers.

Tesla already provides batteries to Solar City, where Musk is chairman

and his cousin, Lyndon Rive, is CEO. Solar City plans to include battery

backup systems with its rooftop solar installations within the five to 10

years. The batteries will be built in the new Nevada battery plant now

under construction. Nevada paid out over $1.2 billion to land the $5

    billion facility.

Singleton said SRP has about 20 of its 15,000 solar customers using

battery backup systems. These units are designed to feed power back

into the house when solar generation is too low for the homes demand.

Thats different than the ASU-SRP research efforts.

This program is designed to capture surplus solar power and then feed

it back into the system when peak power is needed, said Singleton. We

need to study that impact on the stability of the (power) grid.

If the technology pans out, it can help reduce the necessity of building

power plants to provide peak hour electrical loads.

This is a research effort, said Grant Smedley, SRP manager for research

and development. There isnt a product being developed, but the

research will provide information to optimize what batteries are needed

    for homes.

The research can also be ported to commercial photovoltaic arrays on

    commercial buildings.

Currently, battery backups work to power critical home components

air conditioning, refrigerators, freezers in the event solar power is cut

off. Most systems in use today are not designed to feed battery power

back into the grid or provide COMPLETE home power for extended

    periods of time.

Arizona Public Service Co. has several utility scale solar facilities using

molten salt and other technologies to store power for a few hours after

the sun sets, but SRP does not have any battery storage at its facilities.

ASU installed a lithium ion battery system on the roof of its Engineering

Research Center in Tempe. The first step was to design a method to

simulate the load on the SRP power grid. This process took about a

year. The second part, which started about a year ago, was to install a

photovoltaic array similar to one used by a home, and test the system

against the grid and batteries. The testing will COMPLETE in July,

    said Smedley.

Singleton said that one of the benefits, if this works, is that customers

could save MONEY on the cost of peak power. Peak power rates are

higher than off-peak rates. Conventional solar is usually at its most

efficient generating capacity during off-peak hours. Source; Phoenix

Walter, EWAG, ANCA...Name an Exclusive Brand in

Grinding Machines...You WillFind It At US Carbide Tool

If you want a specialty cutting tool and grinding shop where innovation is embraced, where there

is no need to question whether to purchase the latest (and best machinery) is the right thing to do,

you simply must contact US CarbideTool.

Sal Kielbus, co-founder of the company with partner Randy Hansrote, has a very specific goal

in mind for US Carbide Tool. We are actively growing to become the largest and best grinding

company in the Southwest, he says. He added, Of course this meant that we had to offer fast

turnaround, coupled with producing the highest quality parts.

Just two months ago, we announced in the magazine the acquisition of Cutting Tool Consultants.

With the purchase, the machines from CuttingTool Consultants were relocated to US CarbideTool,

in Tempe, AZ. Mark Clements, owner of Cutting Tool Consultants, joined the US Carbide Tool

team, as did his customers. For US Carbide Tool, new talent, new customers and new machines

are the end result of the acquisition.

US CarbideTool opened for business 4 years ago with a few high precision machine tools, including

a 6 axis CNC and a manual EWAG grinding machine. In fact, nearly all of US Carbides machines

in the early years were EWAGs. Randy says, The EWAGs were optimal for our customers, who

wanted very accurate high precision small tools (from .006 to 3/8).

Over the past few years, business for US CarbideTool grew, and the company continued to expand

their EWAG line. Just this past year, however, they made a strategic decision to expand their business.

Randy says, Our customers were asking us to machine tools with the same accuracy and precision

they were getting from us today, but for larger tools. It was at this time that US CarbideTool made

the strategic decision to purchase the best machines for these larger tools --- and the machines of

choice for them were theWalters.Today, the company has 3Walters. Randy says theWalter CNC

grinders and Walters high resolution Helicheck inspection machine enable the US Carbide Tool

team to manufacture precise tools up to 2 inches.

Coincident with their business model that called for a broader range of capabilities at US Carbide

Tool, Sal and Randy brought onWalter Pena, who is now the companys Chief Operating Officer.

Things tend to happen for a reason, and when the company, now with superior Walter grinding

machines that were optimal for larger high precision tools, determined that this new line of business

required additional team members who were skilled in the larger tools. Randy says, Walter knew

of Mark Clements from previous times, and he told Sal and me that Mark and his team would be a

tremendous asset to our team. Sal and Randy met with Mark to discuss the business proposition,

and the rest is history. Mark sums it up well, Sal is extremely ambitious, he is a straight shooter,

and he embraces new technology. I will enjoy working in this exciting, high growth company.

Mark brought his machines into the US

CarbideTool entity, and this means another

superior line of grinding machines, made

by ANCA, are now part of the US Carbide

    Tool business.

To learn just how superior US CarbideTool

is, contact them at 480-755-3812 or visit

    USCarbideTool.com Walter says, You will

see 24-hour turnaround now when special

circumstances or issues call for it. We are

your source precision cutting tools that

range from .006 to 2 inches.

Stay tuned for the companys Open House,

planned for later this year. Prepare to be

amazed when you see this business!

House Moves Bills Making Sec. 179 Equipment Expensing, R&DTax Credit Permanent

Last month, the U.S. House of Representatives passed, H.R. 636, the Americas Small Business Tax

Relief Act of 2015, to make permanent Section 179 Equipment Expensing at $500,000. Over 90%

of OneVoice members used Section 179 in 2014, making it the most used tax investment provision

among the industry. The legislation, introduced by Representatives PatTiberi (R-OH) and Ron Kind

(D-WI), removes the current uncertainty in the tax code after Congress allowed Section 179, Bonus

Depreciation, and the R&DTax Credit to expire on January 1, 2015.

Section 179 reverted to only $25,000, rendering it useless for One Voice members. The legislation

also made permanent the five year built-in gains holding period (H.R. 629) and a basis adjustment to

ensure S corporations are able to deduct the full value of the stock they donate to charity.

Lawmakers also introduced H.R. 880, the American Research and Competitiveness Act of 2015

introduced by Representatives Kevin Brady (R-TX) and John Larson (D-CT). Over half of OneVoice

members claimed the R&DTax Credit last year, which is an important component of innovation for

small and medium-sized manufacturers. The bill permanently extends the credit while allowing small

businesses to claim the R&D against tax

and AMT liability, an important provision

fought for by OneVoice. Both bills now go

    the Senate for consideration.

    Companies Submit Proposalsfor JLTV

One of the US Armys most important

    armored vehicle contests moved closer

    to resolution when manufacturers AM

    General, Lockheed Martin and Oshkosh

Defense delivered proposals for the Joint

    LightTacticalVehicle (JLTV).

The Army plans to make a Milestone C

decision and award of a firm-fixed-price

contract to a single vendor this year. The

award period will cover three years of

low-rate initial production and five years of

    full-rate production.TheArmy plans to buy

approximately 50,000 JLTVs for the Army,

and the Marine Corps would buy 5,500.

Billed as filling the gap between legacy

Humvees and the larger, less mobile mine-

    resistant, ambush-protected vehicle fleet,

the JLTV is intended to restore light tactical

    mobility to the Armys fleet.

The competition pits AM Generals Blast

    Resistant Vehicle-Off road (BRV-O),

    Oshkoshs Light Combat Tactical All-

TerrainVehicle (L-ATV) variant, and a joint

    Lockheed Martin-BAE Systems offering.

The three companies each announced last

month that their submissions were in.

    The solicitation follows Army and

    Marine Corps limited-user testing for

    prototype vehicles, part of engineering

    and manufacturing development (EMD)

contracts, awarded to the three companies

in 2012. Each company delivered 22

vehicles and six trailers for the most

recent test phase, which included ongoing

reliability, armor and blast testing. The

ongoing limited user test involved soldier

    negotiate open terrain and maneuver

    effectively in urban environments and

    Oshkoshs L-ATV offering includes four-seat

and two-seat variants and the companys

    TAK-4i independent suspension system, for

    off-road mobility, maneuverability and ride

quality. The company claims the TAK-4i

provides 25 percent more usable wheel travel

and 70 percent faster speeds in off-road

    terrain compared to todays best-performing

    tactical wheeled vehicles.

Lockheed noted its JLTV offerings power

    4.5-liter, 4-cylinder engine, for greater

displacement than many V6 engines, with

    superior fuel efficiency.

In December, the JLTV joint program office

posted its final draft of the request for

    proposals, which contained source-selection

criteria for the production phases and set a

value for a company offering the data rights

to their offering. The service set a threshold

price for the data package of $511 million,

above which contractors will see no effect

on their rating, as described in the last draft

and first reported by Inside the Army.

U.S. becomes hot spot for aerospace manufacturing

The aerospace industry is shifting more manufacturing investment to the United States after a

decade in which production jobs in the sector flowed to China and other emerging economies,

    according to a new study.

Consultancy ICF International analyzed more than 2,000 investment transactions made since 2000,

and found 28 manufacturing investments in the United States from 2012 to 2013, compared with

eight each in China and Mexico, and four in Brazil. A decade earlier, Mexico led the pack with

10 investments, compared with just six investments in the United States.

ICF said its data show a strong flow into China, India, Brazil, Mexico and other emerging markets

until 2012. In the last three years, investment has shifted toward the United States.

U.S. aircraft manufacturer Boeing Co is moving more production in-house to U.S. plants, reducing

the outsourcing used for the 787 Dreamliner. Rival Airbus is building an assembly line in Mobile,

    Alabama.

For example, Boeing found a 787 air duct made near Seattle was being shipped to Italy, reboxed

and shipped to the 787 factory in Charleston, South Carolina, to be installed.

3-D printing is changing the nature of makingparts

    The widespread adoption

    of 3-D printing is changing

    Arizona manufacturing.

    While the technology isnt

    advanced enough for mass

    p r o d u c t i o n , P h o e n i x -

    area companies in various

    industries are using it for

    prototyping.

At the Phoenix Business Jour nals manufactur ing CEO

roundtable, executives from Valley manufacturers discussed how 3-D

    printing fits into their businesses.

MicrochipTechnology Inc. CEO Steve Sanghi said his company is using

3-D printing to show off its technology toTesla Motors Inc. and its chief

    executive, Elon Musk.

I am getting a model of aTesla Model S 3-D printed, and we are going

to put all of our technology on it, (including) software that gives you

an overhead view with no blind spots, visible on a 17-inch screen,

Sanghi said. You can do things like that that you could not do before

    with 3-D printing.

Honeywell Aerospace uses 3-D printers for prototyping. Mike Owens,

Honeywells vice president of integrated supply chain, said he is

optimistic about what 3-D printing will do for his industry. The

company works with Arizona State University, the University of

TexasEl Paso and others to develop the technology.

For aerospace, were heavily involved with 3-D printing, Owens

said. Every one of our engineers in one of our facilities in Kansas

City has a 3-D printer on their DESK that allows them to rapid-

prototype.Despite their growing adoption, Sanghi said it could be

years before the printers are capable of mass production, and it will

    all be dependent on price.

If you could ever do that cost effectively compared to high-volume

manufacturing, that could be one technology that could that brings a

lot of the manufacturing back to the U.S., he said. Today, you cannot

    compete with high-volume manufacturing overseas.

Owens said the time will come when the technology can be used for

mass production, but its difficult to tell in what situations it might

    first occur.

Sanghi said 3-D printing could become a U.S. industry, but the

printers themselves currently are manufactured in Asian countries

    such as China.

Once a company buys lots and lots of 3-D printers and the technology

advances, (it can) come down to a point where you can volume-

manufacture parts cost-effectively with a 3-D printer and compete

with China, he said.I think that is a long way away. If it could be done

in certain industries if you could 3-D print automotive parts

that could change the shape of the industry.Source:Phoenix Business

Owner Howie Basuk of Barry Metals

Company, in business for 27 years now,

provided real life training to a group of

    students from Mesa Community College.

Dr. Carl Whitesel recently joined the faculty

of Mesa Community College (MCC) in their

    Applied Sciences and Technology department.

Within the Department, there are 14 different

    programs. The department received a

    TAACCCT grant for workforce development

in manufacturing, and formed the Arizona

    Advanced Manufacturing Institute (AzAMI),

    which is comprised of theAutomation,Drafting,

    Electronics, Manufacturing and Welding

    programs.

Carl says,I felt that our classes in theApplied

    Sciences and Technology department would

benefit from tours that would demonstrate

actual experiences that companies in our

industry face. He continued, I contacted

    Mark Lashinske from Modern Industries,

because I know that he is dedicated to helping

in the manfacturing education here inArizona.

Mark recommended I call Howie Basuk to

schedule a tour and an onsite class.

More than a dozen students attended the

tour at Barry Metals. They learned about the

handheld metal testers Barry Metals uses to

ensure the accuracy of the metals in the bins

sent by customers. Howie told the class how

critical it was to pay his customers for the exact

metals that he was purchasing from their scrap.

Dr. Whitesel says that another tour is

scheduled for his students.Planned for March,

students will learn about heat treating when

    they tour Phoenix HeatTreating.

To learn how you can help provide real-life

training to machining and welding students
