The kids are adults, and they have their own places now. Simpli-fication was in order, and that meant downsizing to a house that typically is only home to 2 people (and 2 dogs).

Over the past few months, with our smaller house, we did some renovations to make it just perfect. Some of the improvements meant new appliances and new window treatments. I call these two

examples out because my customer satisfaction experience with the two companies couldn’t have been more polarized.

My new LG microwave stopped working after just two months. Do you know just how hard it is to live without a microwave? I contacted the store where I had purchased the appliance, and they put me in touch with LG direct, since the purchase was more than 30 days ago. LG customer support was outstanding, and a repair technician arrived in about an hour. He needed to order a part, so the repair wasn’t completed that day. However, LG’s policy is to ship the part overnight, no matter where in the world it is located. My repair person told me to call as soon as the package arrived at my house the next day. This happened at 9 am, and he was at my house 10 minutes later. Within 30 minutes, our microwave was up and running! To top it off, a couple of days later I got a call asking if I would participate in a brief survey to let LG know how my experience was. Sure, my microwave failed in less than 90 days, but I would definitely recommend this company!

I purchased window treatments from 3-Day Blinds. First of all, I learned that if you really want the blinds in 3 days, you will pay a premium! What? That’s the company name. Then the design

‘consultant’ came to the house, and she had many recommendations. She even called my mother a wicked witch! She recommended no backing for the front blinds, to allow for maximum lighting where we needed it. She told me that you would see silhouettes through the window at night. That sounded fine. Well the blinds were installed and at night you could see every detail of what we were doing in the house, down to the color of the clothes we were wearing! I called to tell the company I was not happy at all with the blinds. After 3 days, they told me that the bamboo material wouldn’t allow the blinds to be retrofitted and that I would have to order new blinds. While they offered a small discount on the material, I would be charged full price for the delivery and the labor. I was not happy. They sent an email customer satisfaction survey, which I replied to detailing my level of satisfaction. Apparently, unhappy surveys go into a black hole, as I received no call back or any kind of follow up. On top of this, the company sends nearly daily emails to me with their current promotions. Shouldn’t a company know that if you just completely outfitted your house with new window treatments, you are not in the market for their product at this time?

MSN Money’s 2013 Customer Service Hall of Fame highlighted 10 companies -- out of 150 of the country’s largest consumer names -- most often rated as “excellent” for customer service. These top companies share a critical commitment to focusing on customers -- a drive that can mean sacrificing short-term profits and encouraging innovation. Here are the top 10 winners: 1) Amazon.com 2) Marriott 3) Hilton Hotels 4) UPS 5) FedEx 6) Google 7) State Farm 8) Samsung 9) Trader Joe’s 10) Lowe’s

While most of our readers are not involved in consumer sales, I believe we can apply the same principals in all of our businesses. For many of us, customer satisfaction is measured in ‘Quality’ and ‘On Time Delivery’. We can’t always make perfect products, but we can always extend our customers with superior support. It’s not just a good thing to do, it’s good for business! Until next issue, I wish you the best, and God Bless our Troops!

Inventor Announces Non-Chemical Tapping Paste Any Metal, Any Alloy, Any Angle

Tapit All Lubricants President Eric M. Pettersen of Colorado Springs CO has announced development of a non-chemical Tapping/General Purpose Paste that will “Tap any hard Metal, Alloy or Super Alloy known to exist.” - So far anyway!

Successes include tapping/working anodized aluminum, CRS, HRS, all SST’s, titanium, titanium alloys, Inconel, Hastelloy etc. It also mills,

drills treads and does all cutting operations suitable for pastes.

Tapping Aerospace grade Inco-nel a kilo of TAPIT ALL PASTE saves approximately $10,000 in tool costs (assumes $50 taps and 200%+ increases in tool life - 300% increases are common). Precision threading with few broken tools or parts is the norm from Aluminum to Hastelloy. Workers using it in the oil fields of Montana rave about how a little dab enables them to drill anything they encounter on oil derricks.

The paste is biobased, safe to use, cuts cool, with no visible smoke and has no noxious odors. The paste adheres to the tool and does not drip off. Gunsmiths love it! Hear from just a couple of their customers!

“I have been machining for twenty years and have not found a product that works this good and finally a student used it for chambering a

.308 Winchester. I had some concerns about chip flow but the paste worked very well. It was a used reamer that we have used a lot in the past. The chamber came out better than the ones using cutting oil.”

Tool  Life  is  extended  from  200%  plus  to  300%  plus  using  exactly  the  same  tools  and  production  methods  as  with  standard  lubricant  for  each  metal  or  alloy

All  results  are  from  Aerospace  or  Energy  sector  users.

Increases  in  tool  life  give  significant  savings  for  all  metals/alloy  tapping  operations  –  Saving  in  set  up  time  and  fewer  broken  or  rejected  parts  are  in  addition  to  these  tool  cost  savings.  .

We  have  yet  to  find  a  metal  or  alloy  we  can’t  tap  with  significant  improvement  in  tool  life  and  superior  threading  with  greatly  reduced  breakage  or  rejects.

The  paste  works  well  with  any  cutting  operation  where  paste  is  a  suitable  cutting  lubricant.

“We tap holes anywhere from 0-80 to 5/8” – 11. 0 is the diameter of the tap and 80 is the threads per inch. A 0 tap has the diameter of

.060” and 5/8” is .625. This is a wide range of diameter and Tapit All paste has worked well on all. I tapped an 8- 40 hole ¾” deep without clearing the chip ounce. I wanted to see if it would work and it did.”

Workhorse Horizontal Machining Center For Oems And Job Shops

The HC 400 Horizontal Machining Center from Doosan is a compact, high-precision, heavy-duty workhorse with performance-enhancing features included as standard that make it an optimal solution for OEMs and job shops. A massive Meehanite cast iron bed, large linear roller guideway, and powerful inline 30/35 HP, 10,000 RPM spindle enable heavy cuts on the toughest materials, with superior surface finishes and

excellent long-term accuracy.

To minimize set-up time and in-crease productivity, the Doosan HC 400 is equipped with an au-tomatic pallet changer featuring twin tapped pallets. Each pallet measures 15.7” x 15.7” and can handle a maximum load of 882 pounds. All axes are driven by high-precision double-nut ball screws supported on both ends by angular contact thrust bearings. This double pretension design provides outstanding position-ing repeatability. Axis travels are 23.62” in X, 22.05” in Y, and 22.24” in Z. Maximum cutting feedrate is 787 IPM, with rapid traverses to 1574 IPM.

At the heart of the Doosan HC 400 horizontal machining center is a high-precision 35 HP, 10,000 RPM inline spindle. Designed for high stock removal and deep drilling operations, the machine is equipped with through-spindle coolant and an oil-cooled spindle chiller which maintains a con-stant temperature at high speeds, thereby reducing thermal growth and increasing cutting accuracy.

For improved chip flow, a tele-scopic cover inclined at a 30° angle directs chips into a trough, keeping the area around the table clean. In addition, high-velocity air jets clear away chips while pallets are being changed, en-suring their accurate positioning at high speeds.

With an installed base of over 20,000 machine tools in the Americas and more than 80,000 machines worldwide, Doosan Infracore Machine Tools is based in Seoul, South Korea, and is a core division of Doosan Group, the oldest and fastest growing company in Korea.

Mazak to Showcase High-Performance, High-Value 5-Axis Machining at AeroDef

Mazak is a leading supplier to the aerospace and defense industries with hundreds of machine tool configurations to choose from and extensive process engineering expertise. At AeroDef 2014, taking place Feb. 25 – 27 in Long Beach, Calif., the company will demonstrate its new VARIAXIS j-500 5X vertical machining center that offers high-value simultaneous 5-axis and Multi-Tasking capabilities for productively and accurately processing aircraft parts.

Visitors to Mazak booth 639 will experience how the VARIAXIS j-500 5X provides cost-effec-tive and efficient single-machine part processing in titanium, hard metals and aluminum via fast,

powerful high-rigidity spindles as well as a high-accuracy rotary/tilt table. And through its Multi-Tasking capa-bility, the machine further reduces production lead times, improves machining precision and lowers op-erating expenses.

The VARIAXIS j-500 5X comes stan-dard equipped with a 12,000-rpm, 15-hp, CAT-40 milling spindle, with a high-speed 18,000-rpm spindle avail-able as an option. An 18-tool maga-zine provides fast tool changes to keep spindles in the cut and reduce cycle times. And unlike other vertical ma-chining centers, the VARIAXIS j-500 5X changes tools without having to return its table to the home position, thus further reducing cycle times.

An 1,181-ipm rapid traverse rate in the X, Y and Z axes further shortens non-cut times, while the machine’s high-precision rotary/tilt table pro-vides an A-axis (tilting) rotation of

-120 degrees to +30 degrees and a C-axis rotation of +/- 360 degrees, both in increments as small as 0.0001 degrees. Machine travels measure 13.78” x 21.65” x 20.08” for the X, Y and Z axes, respectively.

The machine’s table size is 19.69” in diameter x 15.75” and accommodates workpiece diameters up to 19.69” and heights of 13.78”. An optional two-pallet changer provides simple automation and increased production by allowing workpieces to be loaded and unloaded while the machine spin-dle works uninterrupted.

The user friendly MATRIX 2 control on the VARIAXIS j-500 5X incor-porates the latest CNC technology to optimize 5-axis machining and provide extremely fast processing speeds, excellent cornering, superior part surface finishes and reduced cycle times.

Mazak booth visitors will also have an opportunity to interact with Mazak

Mitsubishi EDM moves into additive manufacturing with Matsuura partnership, LUMEX Avance-25

MC Machinery Systems, Inc., wholly owned by Mitsubishi Corp., proudly announces its partnership with Matsuura Machinery Corpo-ration, Fukui City, Japan, in introducing the new LUMEX Avance-25 metal laser sintering hybrid milling machine to the North American marketplace. The recent additive manufacturing boom is reaching fever pitch in North America. Meanwhile, Matsuura’s laser sintering hybrid milling machines have been sold specifically in the die and mold industry in Japan and Asia. With MC Machinery Systems being the number one EDM machine sales in North America, this partnership makes sense.

“We are the only company devoted in the manufacturing in this business, thus the combination of Matsuura and MMS is a great partnership for

the manufacturing base.” says Nick Giannotte, VP, EDM/Milling/Waterjet. “The mold makers know us and know our people, and we’re excited to be able to offer them this innovative new technology. We have an experienced dealer network, many of whom boast 40 percent market share in their regions. They have relationships with the markets, not to mention the more than 10,000 person-strong customer base we have at MC Machinery.”

Sales expansion won’t be limited to mold and die; MC Machinery and Matsuura are also aiming at the aircraft industry, in which lightweight parts will add fuel efficiency, and the medical industry, which requires custom-made bones and implants. All told, this machine will serve medical, automotive, aerospace, tool/die, and job shop industries.

Technical centers located in Chicago, Los Angeles, Toronto, and New Jersey are equipped with demo facilities and staff to serve the North American market and demonstrate the LUMEX Avance-25’s unique capabilities.

QualiChem Introduces New High-Performance Cutting Fluid for Difficult Machining Applications QualiChem has expanded its XTREME CUT family of premium water-based metalworking fluids with the introduction of XTREME CUT 292. XTREME CUT 292 is specifically designed to overcome the challenges of working with dif-ficult alloys such as titanium, Inconel and stainless steel. The new lubrication technology in XTREME CUT 292 has demonstrated significant cost savings to aerospace customers as a result

of improved cycle times and tool life, particularly when machining exotic alloys. This fluid delivers additional savings because low drag-out rates reduce coolant usage, and extended sump life improves productivity and reduces disposal cost.

“XTREME CUT 292 is designed to be the highest performing oil-based emulsion cutting fluid on the market today,” said Mike Forest, QualiChem’s Director of Metalworking. “In initial field trials, XTREME CUT 292 was found to double tool life, reduce cool-ant usage by 77 percent, cut downtime for tool changes by over 50 percent and eliminate foaming, staining and residue, when compared to another popular brand of water-based cutting fluid. The result was an estimated annual projected tool life savings of $39,060 for a single machine running XTREME CUT 292.” Tests also reveal that XTREME CUT 292 can replace straight oils where other water-dilutable products have failed. XTREME CUT 292 is sold through QualiChem’s worldwide network of more than 50 distributors. QualiChem provides extensive technical support for customers in selecting the right product for specific metalworking applications. About QualiChem

Another day, another wind turbine order for Vestas ’ Colorado factories

Vestas Wind Systems is continuing its recent run of customer orders, with an announcement last month that the manufacturer will supply 75 wind-power turbines to a company called First Wind for a wind farm in Texas.

Vestas said its four Colorado plants will be in-volved in the order — making blades, nacelles and towers for First Wind’s Route 66 wind farm near Amarillo, Texas.

Vestas said the order was part of a larger “master-supply agreement” with First Wind to supply up to 568 megawatts worth of wind turbines for several projects developed by the

company across the United States.

Based in Boston, First Wind operates 16 wind farms in Maine, New York, Vermont, Utah, Washington and Hawaii that can collectively generate 980 megawatts of electricity, enough to meet the needs of about 343,000 homes.

The Route 66 wind farm will use 75 of Vestas’ V110-2.0 megawatt turbines, capable of generating up to 150 megawatts of energy, or enough power to support the needs of about 52,500 homes. Deliveries of the turbines are expected to occur in early 2015, with operations starting in mid-2015.

The order is the third Vestas has announced in the month as wind project developers aim to beat an end-of-the-year deadline to qualify for the federal wind Production Tax Credit that’s worth about $23 per megawatt of energy produced.

To qualify for the credit, developers can either start site preparation on a project, or spend at least 5 percent of the project’s total budget, before Jan. 1, 2014. So far this year, Vestas has announced 1,570 megawatts worth of wind turbine orders for wind farms in the United States and Canada, up from 252 megawatts worth of orders in 2012. The tax credit expired at the end of 2012, but was extended by Congress in January 2013.

Noble Energy ups the ante in Colorado; to spend $2 billion in 2014

Noble Energy Inc., one of the two biggest oil and gas companies working in the Den-ver-Julesburg (DJ) Basin north and east of Denver, plans to spend $2 billion in the region in 2014, up from $1.7 billion the company expects to invest in the area this year.

Company executives have said Noble plans to invest about $10 billion in the area between

2013 and 2018.

Houston-based Noble announced its plans for 2014, including details of its plans to invest a total of about $4.8 billion in its oil and gas operations next year.

About 70 percent of the money will be in-vested in the company’s onshore operations in the United States, with the remaining earmarked for deepwater drilling around the world, the company said.

Next year’s production is expected to be about 18 percent higher than the company’s production in 2013 — including a 28 per-cent jump in its production in Colorado’s DJ basin, the company said.

Noble and other oil and gas companies have stepped up their operations in the DJ in the last few years as horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing have unlocked oil that was once thought to be too difficult and too expensive to reach.

Noble said it believes its holdings in the DJ can produce about 2.6 billion barrels of oil and natural gas liquids, a 24 percent jump in its “net risked resources,” or the amount

of oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids the company believes it can get out of the ground.

Automakers Look To Solar Power As A Potential Energy Source For Its Vehicles

The Chicago Tribune reported that “several automakers have been experimenting with solar power as a power source on produc-tion-ready cars.” Last week, Ford “unveiled plans to make mass-produced solar-powered cars a reality with the C-Max Solar Energi.” Meanwhile, other automakers have found other uses for solar panels such as Cadillac using solar panels to power the on-board accessories of its plug-in hybrid or the Mazda using solar panels to power ventilation sys-tems in its Sentia and Milenia models.

Opinion: U.S. must boost funding for R&D to stay ahead

Alan Leshner, the CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and Paul Stoffels, the chief scientific officer

and worldwide chairman of pharmaceuti-cals at Johnson & Johnson, write that in-vesting in research and development is key for the U.S. to maintain a leadership role.

“Governments worldwide must provide ade-quate support – especially for basic science, which promises big payoffs but requires the longer-term, sustainable funding that can be impractical for the private sector,” they write.

Analysis: U.S. trade deficit starts shrinking

The U.S. trade deficit is getting smaller because some companies that manufacture consumer products are closing offshore operations and bringing them back home, according to The Economist.

“The deficit has narrowed, in part, thanks to a rising surplus in investment income and growth in the traditional surplus in services trade, such as royalties,” the magazine notes.

“But the biggest factor has been the deficit in trade in goods, which has shrunk by 2.2% of [gross domestic product].”

Google Teams With Four Automakers On In-Car Android

Fox Business News reports Google has joined forces with Audi, General Motors, Honda, and Hyundai with the goal of bringing the Android platform to vehicles.

USA Today reports the Open Automotive Alliance uses a platform that is currently familiar to drivers and developers. This gives “automakers access to an open ecosystem and allowing programmers to easily create new apps specifically tailored to in-car use.”

Factory Orders Up In November

Reuters reports that new data from the Census Bureau shows that factory orders rose 1.8

percent in November, in line with economists’ forecasts. New orders rose $8.8 billion.

The AP reports a 21.8 percent increase in vol-atile aircraft orders drove the gains. However, orders were up “in many other categories, a sign of strength at factories and confidence among companies.” Core capital goods in-creased 4.1 percent. Also, demand increased

“for construction machinery, computers, com-munications equipment, furniture and motor vehicle parts.”

Boeing Reports Record Jet Deliveries For 2013

Bloomberg News reports Boeing announced it delivered a total of 648 planes last year. That was a 7.8 percent increase from the previous year “and the most ever in a single year.”

The AP reports that appears to put Boeing ahead of competitor Airbus. The Europe-an-based aircraft maker has said it expected to deliver around 600 jets in 2013.

Spending bill favors General Dynamics tanks, Lockheed F-35

Congress’ omnibus spending bill provided the money for all 29 of the Lockheed Martin F-35 fighter jets the Pentagon requested, along with upgrades to General Dynamics’ M1A2 tank. The bill’s other defense winners include submarines built by Huntington Ingalls and General Dynamics and, except for some re-search cuts, the Navy’s Littoral Combat Ship.

More Automakers Using Aluminum

The Los Angeles Times reported aluminum versus steel is “the next epic battle” in the auto industry. Auto manufacturers are preparing for the “federal standard requiring a near-dou-bling of fuel economy by” the year 2025.

Some automakers say they can hit that goal by making lighter automobiles. But, the Times reported aluminum is more expensive to build vehicles with than steel. It is also more difficult to stamp and weld.

Machine tools are amongst the most critical components of a machine shop’s business. Along with customers and employees, a shop can’t survive without them. So if you purchase used machinery, why would you do it on your own? It’s just too much of a gamble.

As a machine shop owner, you let lawyers handle legal matters, and accountants handle your taxes. What you may not recognize is that the expertise required to buy/

sell/appraise/auction used equipment is best left in the hands of trained professionals. After all, it’s about procuring machines that are up and running from the time they are installed on your floor. It’s about your business.

For the past quarter of a century, Automatics & Machinery Co. has supported customers in acquiring; selling, appraising and auctioning quality used CNC/manual machine tools. Today, the company supports customers all over the United States and Internationally. Located in Longmont, Colorado (just north of Denver), the company is best known for CNC machinery, bar feeders (all makes), and is notably experts in Haas, Fanuc and CNC Swiss Lathes, such as Citizen, Star, Tsugami, Tornos, Hanwha, NexTurn, Maier, Nomura, Swistek and others; but the team is very well versed with a number of other machine tool brands, including DMG Mori Seiki, Doosan/Daewoo, Mazak, Nakamura-Tome, Okuma, Miyano, Kitamura, Matsuura, Hardinge, Fadal and more. In addition, they handle all the accessories for these machines including bar feeds, chip conveyors, high pressure coolant and mist collectors.

Automatics & Machinery has a very sound business model. Mike Reeves, Vice President of Sales, says, “We buy good machines and we make them better. We buy running machines (almost always inspected by us or by a trained technician at the seller’s facility, and when we bring them in, we test them, sometimes paint and re-label them so that they look pristine, and then we package them for delivery, so that nothing gets damaged in transit. We also videotape the machine, tooling and accessories, post it on our website & YouTube, so that a buyer anywhere in the world knows what he or she is paying for.”

The company is located in an immaculate 20,000 square foot facility, and offers one of the largest inventories of CNC machines west of the Mississippi. Plus they also purchase machinery with other dealers throughout the US and Canada. Its staff of 12 includes 6 full time sales experts, who are dedicated to buying and selling machinery for their customers. The other 6 employees support the entire back end operations involved with getting machines bought, sold, rigged and shipped.

Steve Beck, founder and owner of Automatics & Machinery Co., Inc., says, “There are probably a few thousand used machinery dealers in the United States today. Most are really 1 person brokers, using the Internet and contacts to negotiate exchanges.” He continued, “When you engage with a used machinery dealer, it is important to check into their credentials. At Automatics, we are a long-standing member of the Machinery Dealers National Association (MDNA). MDNA is an in-ternational, nonprofit trade association dedicated to the promotion of the used machinery industry. It was established in 1941 to assure buyers of the integrity and reliability of the used machinery dealers from around the world that are members of the Association. MDNA members must abide

by a code of ethics, and when you engage with an MDNA member, you can feel confident that you are dealing with a professional used machinery organization.

Steve Beck is also an “accredited” machinery appraiser through the Association of Machinery and Equipment Appraisers (AMEA). When you want to appraise your equipment, whether it is for plant/equipment valuation, re-financing, liquidation, equipment/plant(s) sale, planning a merger/buyout/acquisition, insurance purposes, estate planning, or involved in litigation, you want to know you are dealing with an accredited or certified appraiser whose profession is machinery and equip-ment. AMEA members are required to pass examinations and participate in on-going education and training, and they have a first hand understanding of the dynamic economic swings in the industry that influence machinery values. This means that you will get the best price when you want to sell your machine tool(s).

New machine tool dealers often work with the team at Automatics & Machinery. Steve says, “Many times machine shops need to sell a machine to make room and free up cash for their new machine tool purchase. Machine tool dealers all over the United States know that our mailing list of approximately 80,000 machine shops and decision makers is an asset that they want to take advantage of to help get their customer’s existing machine(s) sold quickly. It is really a winning solution for all involved.”

Hear Some Feedback from Automatics & Machinery’s customers:

“When I was working in our machine shop, one of our customers had a critical line down. The machine they were making parts on was a custom machine they built. They called me and asked if I could help get them out of a jam. My machine was able to make their parts, but I didn’t have the needed single tube barfeeder. I called Steve at Automatics. He started calling his contacts and found a single tube barfeeder for me. He had it shipped to us overnight! The bar feeder was a few thousand dollars, and our end customer was so happy that we got him out of a jam that he paid for the barfeeder. You just don’t see the kind of ‘I can make it happen for you’ attitude that Automatics has!”

“The owner of our shop sells his used machine tool equipment on his own. He likes to think he is wheeling and dealing, but he would have gotten more for his used machines if he had contacted Automatics & Machinery. Shop owners don’t have the time or resources to do the extensive research that Automatics does, nor do they know of all of the available buyers. Anyone selling used equipment should first call Automatics.”

“We were in the market for some new Citizen M machines, but the delivery schedule didn’t meet our requirements. We contacted Automatics & Machinery. They found 4 available in a shop in California. We flew out immediately and bought all 4, complete with tooling. We were up and running with our ‘new’ Citizens in no time!”

“We’ve been buying and selling machines through Automatics & Machinery for many years now. We have a very good work-

ing relationship, and I feel they get me a very fair price both for the machines we sell and the used machines we buy through them. They are a trustworthy group of people.”

Contact Automatics & Machinery when you are looking to buy or sell used machinery, anywhere in the U.S., and even internation-ally. You can reach them at 800-543-7666 or visit their website (automatics.com). Trust your used machinery to the professionals!

Oil Exports Lead US Trade Deficit To Lowest Level In Four Years

Reuters reports the Commerce Department reported this morning that the US trade deficit fell in November to its lowest level in four years. Oil exports were largely credited for the change.

Bloomberg News (reports the trade deficit fell due to “a plunge in oil imports,” while “increasing domestic output pushed exports of petroleum products to a record.”

Northrop Grumman Reinvents Satellite Com-munications For Aircraft

In one year, Northrop Grum-man Corporation took a sat-ellite communications system normally used in space and transformed it into a high-func-tioning, low-cost communica-tions system that can be used on aircraft.

The satellite communications (SATCOM) system was successfully demonstrated on board the company’s Firebird demonstrator aircraft. Until now, no small communications system has been able to send sensor data to a satellite and back to a ground station at such a high rate of transfer.

“It’s a game changer for those that need high-quality, real-time data, but don’t want to – or can’t – have a large, heavy communications system onboard,” said Brett Amidon, director of Technology Devel-opment at Northrop Grumman’s Aerospace Systems. “Our system provides beyond line of sight capabilities in a compact, lightweight, low-profile package.”

During the demonstration, the SATCOM system rapidly provided full-motion video to the ground. For demo purposes, the system and associated test equipment were housed within a pylon-mounted structure attached to the top of the Firebird fuselage.

The system’s small size saves a great deal of space, allowing more sensor payloads and equipment to be carried by the aircraft.

Northrop Grumman developed the SATCOM system using Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology, which first gained attention as the source of brightly colored LED lights. GaN allows for high communications output while using very little physical space.

Northrop Grumman is a leading global security company providing innovative systems, products and solutions in unmanned systems, cyber, C4ISR, and logistics and modernization to government and commercial customers worldwide. Please visit www.northropgrum-man.com for more information.

Aerospace Sales Level In 2013 But AIA Predicts Rise In 2014 Led By Civil Aircraft

Pressure on spending for military and space products and services more than offset solid demand for commercial aircraft leading to a slight reduction in overall United States aerospace sales in 2013 but demand is expected to pick up leading to a solid gain for the aerospace indus-try in 2014, according to the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA).

AIA said that overall sales will hit $220.1 billion this year, down just less than a percent from $222 billion in 2012, before rebounding to $232.1 billion in 2014, a five percent uptick. The expected sales for 2013 are below the nearly $224 billion AIA had forecast a year ago, but that estimate excluded the impact of sequestration, which went into effect in March and forced the Pentagon and federal civilian agencies to cut billions of dollars from their budgets in FY ’13.

The 2014 estimate factors in a pending congressional budget deal that is expected to soften the blow to the defense industry during the next two years from the ongoing sequester, Marion Blakey, president and CEO of AIA, told Defense Daily following her presentation of AIA’s 2013 Year-End Review and Forecast.

While the budget deal is a positive, Blakey said in her remarks that the reality of sequestration remains a threat to the health of the nation’s defense industrial base in terms of employment and investing in needed military capabilities.

In 2013, aerospace employment is expected to contract by 2 percent, going from 631,400 jobs a year ago to 618,200 this year, AIA said. AIA maintained a constant drumbeat this year warning about the potentially devastating impacts to the defense industrial base from sequestration and Blakey said that going forward she’s “not going to walk away from the tenor and tone of those remarks.”

AIA warns that while the impacts of sequestration are felt at all levels of the defense industrial base, the risks to small and medium-size companies are greater. Amid sequestration, an already constrained spending environment, and uncertainty about future budgets, suppliers have lost sales, seen contracts canceled, and implemented layoffs and hiring freezes, AIA said.

Despite the flattish sales in 2013, the aerospace industry remains the backbone of U.S. exports, with the balance of trade in aerospace products expanding 12 percent to $73.5 billion on the strength of the commercial aircraft business and space. Blakey said the balance was the best in history for the aerospace industry.

AIA said that civil aircraft, engines and parts make up 88 percent of aerospace exports.

AIA is optimistic about the strength of defense exports due to recent reform measures to loosen export controls on commercial satellites and some technology found in military aircraft and military aircraft engines. Defense exports are a “priority” for industry given as domestic defense spending declines, AIA said, adding that the government and

Civil aircraft growth in 2014 is projected to grow nearly 8 percent to $72.1 billion after a similar rise in 2013 to $67 billion, AIA said. Gains in both years are being driven by higher shipments of passenger and cargo planes, helicopters and general aviation aircraft.

In 2013, military aircraft sales are projected to be about $56 billion, a 6 percent decline from 2012, according to AIA’s preliminary expec-tations. In 2014 military aircraft sales are projected to rise nearly 3 percent to $57.6 billion.

After a 4 percent decline in 2013, missiles sales are expected to re-bound in 2014 with a 3 percent gain to $22.1 billion, still $300 million off of 2012 levels. AIA estimated that space related sales in 2014 will be up 5 percent to $47.1 billion from $44.8 billion, which would put them ahead of the $46.4 billion in 2012.

Eclipse Brings Jobs To Albuquerque

According to various accounts, Eclipse Aerospace intends to expand. This is a turnaround from 2008, when the company filed for bank-ruptcy and laid off workers in the wake of the financial crisis and a collapse in the demand for Very Light Jets (VLJs.) The article notes that “five years later, the company has a new owner, a new name and is looking for new employees to boost production of its jets.”

According to the article, both the state of New Mexico and the city of Albuquerque are contributing funds to help with the com-pany’s“expansion.” Reportedly, the company is currently producing about two airplanes a month, with expectations for higher demand.

According to the Albuquerque Journal “The city and state would pay up to $635,000, which would come in increments for every 10 new jobs added by Eclipse.” The new jobs are expected to be in manufacturing, engineering and administration, officials said.

While the market for the VLJ is small, the sheer number of entrants indicates latent demand, according to an editorial in AMD. The piece notes that Honda Aircraft, Cirrus, and Embraer are all opening or expanding VLJ facilities in the continental US.

Airlines Are Now On Largest “Jet-Buying Spree” In History

The AP reported that airlines have been on “the largest jet-buying spree in the history of aviation,” purchasing 8,200 new planes over the past five years from both Boeing and Airbus to save on fuel costs, which are “nearly four times” than they were a decade ago.

The article notes that this has resulted in both companies increasing their production lines so that they are producing a combined 24 planes a week, “up from 11 a decade ago.”

NASA’s Flexible Rover Could Be Used On Future Mission To Titan

While it might look like a squishable mess of ropes and tent poles, NASA’s proposed “Super Ball Bot” could hold the key to making landing a rover on another planet easier and far less expensive, ac-cording to a new report published l in IEEE Spectrum, the journal of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

Under ideal circumstances, modern-day planetary rovers “can re-quire careful choreography of multiple landing stages and involve parachutes, airbags, and retrorockets,” writer Rachel Courtland explained. Once landed, the vehicle would then have to traverse steep terrain that can make a journey slow and arduous.

However, researchers at NASA’s Ames Research Center told Court-land that they are working on a robotic exoskeleton that is flexible and capable of changing its shape – the aforementioned Super Ball Bot. The device will be able to land unassisted and is capable of ab-sorbing impact, eliminating the need for landing gear.

The Super Ball Bot would have all of the scientific instruments re-quired to complete its mission embedded directly into its exoskeleton, and as demonstrated by a prototype unit in recently-released video footage, the robot would be capable of changing the length of its cables in order to roll around a planet’s surface without requiring wheels.

“Made up of hollow cylindrical rods connected by flexible materials such as elastic cable, the clever design draws on the principles of

‘tensegrity’ (a combination of ‘tensional’ and ‘integrity’), allowing any impact to be safely absorbed along multiple paths,” Trevor Mogg of Digital Trends explained. NASA believes it could survive a 60-plus mile drop onto a planet’s surface.

Super Ball Bot is being co-developed by Vytas SunSpiral and Adrian Agogino at the Ames Intelligent Systems Division. Earlier this year, they were awarded a Phase II grant to continue the research, said Phys Org’s Nancy Owano.

According to RT.com, NASA is considering using it for an expedition on Neptune’s moon, Titan. Titan could be a good test for the rover, the website said, because the moon’s dense nitrogen atmosphere would cushion the vehicle’s fall, and it would likely have an easier time traveling on the surface than its traditional wheeled counterparts.

“Another advantage of NASA’s ball bot is its small size when packed, with the space agency envisioning sending hundreds of them on a single mission. Upon arrival their destination, the bots would be able to automatically spring into shape,” Mogg said.

While movement needs to be perfected before the new-type rovers could be deployed, “there’s an excellent chance that these remark-able collapsing robots will one day be rolling across faraway planets and moons, sending back information that could help us unlock the enduring mysteries of our solar system and beyond,” he added.

Hybrid copter is first of its kind

T h e r a n g e - e x -tender version of t he vo l o co p te r wil l have a pro-peller behind the cockpit. Shown is the all-electric version.

A small team of in-ventors in Germany is moving closer to first flight of its VC200 volocopter—a helicopter-like aircraft conceived from the start to be powered by batteries and electric motors.

In contrast to conventional helicopters, e-volo’s tail-less VC200 (the 200 means two-seater) uses a web of paired electric motors and propellers for vertical takeoff and landing plus forward motion. Independently controlled for rotational speed, the 18 motors/propellers are used to steer the aircraft. No mechanical pitch control of the propellers is necessary.

A “pusher” motor and propeller pairing, aft of the cockpit, was envisioned from the beginning. But the “range-extender” ver-sion—likely using an internal-combustion engine feeding a gen-erator—is two or three years down the road, Alexander Zosel, e-volo CEO, told Aerospace Engineering via email.

In the prototype version of VC200, electricity for the equally rated (about 3.9 kW) motors is stored in a centralized battery pack—details of which the company is not releasing. The serial version of VC200 will have 18 decentralized packs as well as some “centralized batteries,” said Zosel.

He and his e-volo co-executives and co-inventors—Thomas Senkel, Lead Drive Development; and Stephan Wolf, CFO, Lead Software Development—have designed VC200 to eventually achieve:

• Cruising speed of at least 54 knot (100 km/h)• Flight altitude of up to 6500 ft• Maximum takeoff weight of 450 kg• More than one hour flight time

It will be seen over the next few years whether those bogies are actually achieved. Currently, battery capacity is sufficient for only about 20 min of flight time. The company is confident battery technology will advance significantly by the time the first VC200 is placed in a customer’s hands, which, Zosel said, will happen in 2016.

The first VC200 prototype was completed in time for the world premiere in Berlin on Aug. 13, 2013, as part of Europe’s Green-Tec Awards program. Airbus won the “Goliath” award for work in fuel cells, and e-volo won the “David” award for the VC200.

General Dynamics to Deliver U.S. Army’s Newest Tactical Ground Station Intelligence System

The U.S. Army awarded a contract to General Dynamics C4 Systems for 10 vehicle-mounted Tactical Ground Station (TGS) Lot D systems with an option for 11 additional systems. The TGS system is part of the Distributed Common Ground System-Army (DCGS-A), the Army’s primary deployed system for posting, processing and distributing intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance information in real time to intelligence analysts and commanders. The order is valued at $31.5 million with all options exercised. The first of the new TGS systems is scheduled for delivery during the third quarter of 2013.

DCGS-A provides Army analysts with access to more than 600 data sources and allows rapid collaboration through shared data access. The General Dynamics-built TGS-Lot D systems allow analysts to comb through millions of classified and unclassified records within minutes, providing commanders with status updates on persons of interest and imminent threats such as improvised explosive devices.

TGS systems have been widely deployed to forward operating bases worldwide, providing U.S. military and coalition soldiers with critical force protection intelligence that saves lives at the tactical edge.

The TGS Lot D procurement followed a full-and-open competition and includes TGS vehicle system integration, training materials, field service and support. The new TGS systems will deliver superior information processing capability, secure network communications and collaboration with other intelligence resources worldwide.

More information about General Dynamics’ expertise in these mission critical systems is available at www.gdc4s.com/ArmyISR.

Boeing Raises Twenty-Year Commercial Jet Forecast

Bloomberg News reports Boeing “raised its 20-year forecast for commercial jet demand by 3.8 percent as air traffic outstrips global economic growth and airlines refresh their fleets with $4.8 trillion in new planes.” Randy Tinseth, marketing vice president for commercial airplanes at Boeing, said he did not see a “bubble” in the market even as the company considers raising production rates. However, Richard Aboulafia, an analyst with the Teal Group, warned inexpensive financing and oil prices could change these numbers. Meanwhile, Howard Rubel, an analyst with Jefferies LLC, predicted that Boeing and Airbus would continue to dominate the market as new entrants are just starting to come to the market.

The AP reports that speaking ahead of the Bourget international air show in Paris, Tinseth, “said rising oil prices are forcing carriers to think harder about efficiency, and that means smaller planes that burn less fuel.” That “also means design changes, streamlined air traffic control and improved navigation to shave miles (kilometers) off each flight.” The AP notes, “The demand for fuel efficiency has eaten away at orders for the wide-body long haul carriers that are major profit-drivers for Boeing and Airbus, the world’s two biggest aircraft manufacturers.”

United States.

The sites will not be co-located with existing DoD sites that have been cleared to fly UAS in the United States, such as Grand Forks Air Force Base, ND, Pennington said. However,

he said the new airspace sites will likely butt up against those DoD-owned sites.

DoD will begin preliminary site selection for those locations by the end of 2012, Pennington said.

The unmanned aircraft will use a ground-based sense-and-avoid system for the early flight tests scheduled for the airspace locations. Sense and avoid technology allows unmanned aircraft to detect other planes in the area and change its course to avoid midair collisions.

The ground-based system will relay information from air traffic control and other sources on the location of all aircraft flying in the area of the UAS. That info will then be relayed to the UAS pilot on the ground, who can then maneuver the aircraft through the air traffic.

As tests progress, DoD officials plan to move to a partially automated sense-and-avoid system on board the aircraft, Pennington said.

Creation of these airspace bubbles was part of the FAA reauthorization bill proposed earlier this year. Lawmakers tabled passage of the FAA bill until September, when Congress is set to return from its summer recess.

Once passed, Pennington predicted that there would be a lot of “political jockeying” by lawmakers to land one of the test sites, given the money and resources DoD plans to pump into the effort.

Boeing Dreamliner Finishes Test Program

Bloomberg News reports the Boeing 787 Dreamliner “finished its 20- month flight-test program in the final hurdle toward approval for passenger service that could start next month.” The last flight was made on August 13 and now the FAA “must verify the paperwork in a review Boeing has said it expects this week and then certify the jet before its first delivery.

The agency, which has worked with Boeing since the 787’s inception, doesn’t discuss certification work, said Alison Duquette, a spokeswoman.” The article notes that the only the 787s with Rolls Royce engines completed testing and more are needed for those with GE Engines. The CNET News “Cutting Edge” blog notes that on the final test flight,

“the 14-person crew successfully completed simulations of a dispatch with a failed generator and failed fuel flow indication during the flight.”

Pratt, Rolls-Royce Realign Ties

United Technologies Corp.’s Pratt & Whitney unit and Rolls-Royce PLC are ending one aircraft-engine joint venture to start another.Pratt will pay $1.5 billion for Rolls-Royce’s share in their existing International Aero Engines consortium, which produces the engines that power the Airbus A320 jetliner family.

The two companies plan to work together in a new venture that will develop engines for future narrow-body aircraft using Pratt’s geared turbofan technology.

The new venture will go head to head with General Electric Co. to develop more-efficient engines for the single-aisle-aircraft segment, in which the companies expect demand to be around 20,000 new aircraft over the next 20 years.

It also comes after London-based Rolls-Royce declined to develop new engines for the latest upgrades to the A320 neo, produced by Airbus, a unit of European Aeronautic Defence & Space Co.

Pratt had all but abandoned the single-aisle market in the early 1990s but began muscling its way back in over the past few years in the face of dismissals from its rivals including Rolls and GE.

Last year, Pratt scored a coup when Airbus selected its geared turbofan engine as one of two engine options for the revamped A320.

But this summer Pratt was excluded from a similar move at Boeing Co., which opted to upgrade its 737 instead of investing in a next-generation aircraft.

The new 737 plane exclusively uses an engine from CFM, a joint venture between GE and France’s Safran SA.

The new venture will focus on the high-bypass ratio, geared-turbofan technology. The other partners in the previous partnership—Japanese Aero Engine Corp. and MTU Aero Engines GmbH—intend to join.

Roche l icenses technology from Biodesign Institute

Roche and Arizona Technology Enterprises (AzTE) announced an agreement to license several technologies developed by Stuart Lindsay at the Biodesign Institute at Arizona State University and Colin Nuckolls of the Columbia University Nanoscience Center for the development of a revolutionary DNA sequencing system.

The licensed technologies include specialized approaches for DNA base sensing and reading and build on an ongoing collaboration between Roche’s sequencing center of excellence, 454 Life Sciences, and IBM to develop and commercialize a single-molecule, nanopore DNA sequencer with the capacity to rapidly decode an individual’s complete genome for well below $1000.

The licensed technologies offer novel approaches for reading the sequence of bases, or letters, in a single DNA molecule as it is passed through a nanopore. The team has demonstrated proof-of-concept, and is in the midst of making a third generation reader molecule that provides better discrimination between the DNA bases. The licensing agreement with Roche will help translate these discoveries into a commercial instrument.

The DNA Transistor technology, developed by IBM Research, slows and controls the movement of the DNA molecule as it threads through a microscopic nanopore in a silicon chip, while the newly licensed DNA reading technology can decode the bases of the DNA molecule as it passes through.

Both technologies are centered on semiconductor-based nanopores, which have advantages over protein-based nanopores in terms of control, robustness, scalability, and manufacturability.

The deal was brokered by Arizona Technology Enterprises (AzTE), the exclusive intellectual property management and technology transfer organization of Arizona State University, and includes sponsored research funding that will help Lindsay’s team move the technology towards commercialization.

ASU was the only university to receive more than one award.

Makino Introduces the T1 5-Axis Horizontal Machining Center

Makino introduces the T1 5-axis horizontal machining center for high-efficiency machining across a wide range of large part applica-tions. The machine’s rigid design, versatile cutting capabilities and sizable work envelope make it an ideal fit for industrial component manufacturing and aerospace job-shop environments, where machin-ing of both soft and hard metals is required.

“The T1 5-axis machining center is designed to handle parts of any shape, in any material,” says David Ward, horizontal machining center product line manager. “The T1’s unique casting and kinematic struc-ture provide ideal accessibility to large prismatic or cylindrical work-pieces. The machine features a plus 45-degree to minus 110-degree A-axis tilting spindle, which, coupled with a deep chest column design, allows a minus 90-degree spindle centerline positioning to 550 mm (21.6 inches) beyond pallet center. As a result, large workpieces that are 1-meter (3.2 feet) square by 500 to 800 mm (19.6 inches to 31.4 inches) high can be machined in a single five-sided machining process. The value of the T1’s operation consolidating 5-axis accessibility is compounded by its spindle capability. The torque and power of the 12,000-rpm spindle make it highly productive in the machining of non-ferrous, ferrous and hard-metal materials, putting shop owners in a unique position to deliver highly competitive machining solutions for workpieces of any shape and any material.” The T1 is ideal for large parts commonly machined in industrial, energy and aerospace industries, and it provides X-, Y- and Z-axis travels of 1,500 mm (59.1 inches), 1,300 mm (51.2 inches) and 2,000 mm (78.7 inches), respectively. Workpiece limitations on the 1,000-mm (39.3 inches) pallets are 1,500 mm (59.1 inches) in diameter by 1,500 mm (59.1 inches) tall. Maximum pallet payload is 3,000 kg (6,600 lbs). Traditional approaches for 5-axis machining use trunnion tables for rotary motion. The T1 employs an alternate design with a unique A/B-axis configuration that eliminates the need to tilt the workpiece by shifting A-axis motion to the spindle side. This simple change in 5-axis kinematics delivers significant improvements over trunnion solutions. Operators also benefit from unobstructed visualization of the cutting zone and a reduced distance between floor and pallet top for simplified fixture and part handling. The T1 offers numerous capabilities for improved utilization and reductions in non-cut time. A 60-position automatic tool changer (137-position optional) and an automatic pallet changer ensure un-interrupted operation. The T1 may also be integrated with Makino’s MMC2 (Makino Machining Complex), a highly flexible automatic pallet transfer and storage system which enables long periods of unattended operation. Because it uses the same 1,000-mm (39.3 inches) pallet design as the 4-axis Makino A100E, both the T1 and A100E can reside in the same MMC2 system. This identical design allows sharing of fixtures and workpieces between the machines to create a powerful 4- and 5-axis machining solution. Small Businesses Anticipate Breakout Year Ahead

Entrepreneur Bill Brown had scaled back his San Jose, Calif., con-struction firm as demand for new Silicon Valley homes and offices dried up in recent years, cutting his staff by two-thirds, to 50 by late 2011.

But over the course of 2013, he has spent $200,000 on equipment and some new trucks—after “running the old trucks pretty hard for too long,” he says—and brought staff levels back to about 100 workers, recently hiring 20 more people. He plans to hire dozens more to fill new construction jobs in 2014.

After several false starts in the dragged out U.S. economic recovery, one might expect America’s small-business owners to be wary. Yet many, such as Mr. Brown, expect 2014 to be a breakout year, one that finally puts the worst of the downturn behind them.

“It’s hard not to be optimistic. We’re struggling to keep up with de-mand and I don’t see this stopping any time soon,” he says.

Of course, entrepreneurs may be an optimistic bunch by nature—few people go into business for themselves expecting to fail. But the op-timism may now be underpinned by some encouraging signs about 2014. Overall the economy expanded by 4.1% in the third quarter, driven by an upswing in consumer spending, and unemployment overall in November was down to its lowest in five years.

Key Issues Small Businesses Will Face in 2014

A 30-year veteran of the construction industry who builds homes and offices for technology executives across Southern California, Mr. Brown says he expects Bill Brown Construction Co.’s revenue to hit $12 million in 2013, up from $10 million in 2012 and more than double his earnings at the height of the recession.

Other business owners across the coun-try are seeing more customers coming through their doors, and placing orders online. And in turn, the owners are more willing to open their wallets, too, spend-ing money on new equipment, vehicles, building repairs or office furniture and fixtures.

“We’ve had a good sales year and we’re above our numbers,” says Jorge Arroyo, president of Benefit Consultants Group Inc., a Delran, N.J., retirement planning company with 65 employees. The firm’s revenue hit $8 million in 2013, up roughly $500,000 over 2012.

Of 937 small-business owners surveyed in December by The Wall Street Journal and Vistage International, 52% said the economy had improved in 2013, up from 36% a year ago. Another 38% said they expect conditions to be even better in 2014, up from 27%.

Three out of four businesses said they expect better sales in 2014, and overall, the small business “confidence index”—based on business owners’ sales expectations, spending and hiring plans—hit an 18-month high of 108.4 in December. All respondents, polled online from Dec. 9 to Dec. 18, had less than $20 million in annual revenue and most had less than 500 employees.

According to the latest data from the National Federation of Inde-pendent Business, a Washington lobby group, small-business owners in November ranked weak sales below taxes and red tape as their biggest headache, for the first time since June 2008.

In the group’s most recent survey, owner sentiment improved

slightly in November but was still dismal compared with pre-2007.

Strong sales, and a healthier bottom line, might lead to better access to capital for some businesses, as banks begin to lend more freely to small firms. Federal regulators are also loosening decades-old rules for raising cash from outside investors, offering new ways for small private companies to finance growth.

Still, Dane Stangler, head of research at the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, a Kansas City, Mo., entrepreneurship advocacy group, cautions that the brighter outlook could be dimmed by a number of unresolved issues that await businesses in 2014.

These include the likelihood of renewed fiscal squabbles in Wash-ington, and the health-care law rollout, which threatens to boost costs for some employers.

BP Report: Shale Technology Will Change Global Energy Trade

Bloomberg News writes that growth in shale oil and gas production, along with falling demand, will allow the US to become self-sufficient by 2035, according to BP Plc. In its Energy Outlook 2035 report released last month, the company writes that progress in shale-re-lated technology “will transform the global energy trade over the next two decades,” with Asia absorbing about 80 percent of the oil trade. Europe will continue to be a major fuel importer as well, said BP Chief Economist Christof Ruehl, but OPEC will need to reduce

“output to offset rising global supplies.”

U.S. Factories Begin to Hit Growth Stride

The nation’s factories finished the year on a high note and looked to be building momentum heading into 2014.

The Institute for Supply Management’s monthly index, which is based on a survey of purchasing managers, hit 57 in December. That was down slightly from 2013’s high of 57.3, registered in November. Readings above 50 indicate expansion.

Manufacturing has expanded for the past seven months, according to ISM surveys, after slowing last spring.

“I don’t see any weaknesses,” in the December survey, ISM Chairman Bradley J. Holcomb said. “I see a good, strong, balanced report…and a very promising start” for 2014. Readings for the first half of 2013 averaged 51.5, just over the expansion threshold. In the second half, that pace picked up to 56.3.

A worker manufactures parts for industrial coffee-grinding equipment in December at Modern Process Equipment Inc. in Chicago.

Business at MHT Lighting, which makes energy-efficient indoor and outdoor lighting, reflected the national trend. “December was just phenomenal… probably our second-best month of the year,” said Joe Scalice, director of inside sales at the Staten Island, N.Y., company.MHT’s business slowed in the summer but rebounded swiftly, Mr.

Scalice said, ending 2013 roughly 5% to 7% above the previous year’s pace. MHT, which also has operations in San Diego, expects gains in 2014 to be “substantially higher,” Mr. Scalice said. In part, that is because the company invested heavily in research and development in the past year. MHT is hiring, he said, and next month will initiate production on a new line of lighting.

Within December’s manufacturing report, gauges of new orders and hiring showed strength, a promising signal for the final labor-market snapshot for 2013.

Those forward-looking readings within the report support the case for manufacturing’s momentum, said John Ryding, of RDQ Economics. The sector’s strength has been building for months and not just a few weeks. He also noted the absence of a significant storm cloud that could disrupt production, such as the monthslong interruption in the global supply chain after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

The year-end momentum had some analysts dubious about whether factories can sustain the pace of recent gains, however. “It’s a very strong report…but it will be surprising if it can hold on to 57 very much longer,” said Ian Shepherdson, chief economist of Pantheon Macroeconomics. The figures “are very strong compared with in-ternational surveys of manufacturing, particularly in China,” he said. Reports this week reflected a slight softening in the pace of Chinese manufacturing.

Not all manufacturers are riding the momentum from pent-up de-mand for autos and homes. At Bremen Castings Inc., a foundry and machine shop, business moved “sideways” in 2013 and is likely to do so again in 2014, said J.B. Brown, president of the Bremen, Ind., company. His firm makes metal parts for agricultural machinery, heavy trucks, railroad equipment, lawn mowers and other purposes.

Bremen’s work for the heavy-truck market was down 28% last year, Mr. Brown said, while the company’s agricultural business remained flat. Military projects were “nonexistent in 2013, which didn’t help,” he said. Competition—particularly from rivals in China and India—means Bremen Castings has to work harder than ever just to keep up.

“We all worked really, really hard to continue to be flat,” Mr. Brown said.

Page 37: A2Z Metalworker Rocky Mtn Edition jan feb 2014

A2Z METALWORKER • 37 • Jan/Feb 2014

The ISM report also showed only mild fallout among manufacturers from October’s 16-day federal government shutdown, or Washing-ton’s fiscal problems that were partially addressed in the budget deal signed last month. “We see overall very little…noticeable impact from those problems,” Mr. Holcomb said. While fiscal concerns persist, “hopefully Washington is listening more and will work hard to resolve [them] before they become problems.”

Cargill chooses Northern Colorado for steel processing center, cites oil and gas boom Cargill Inc. will build a new steel processing center in Windsor, about 60 miles north of Denver, to feed the boom in Colorado’s oil and gas industry and an attendant rise in U.S. manufacturing.

“By locating in northern Colorado, which is in the heart of one of the largest oil shale formations in the U.S., Cargill can better serve and bring more value to our customers in this part of the country,” said Mike Taylor, president of Cargill’s steel service center, in the company’s announcement recently.

The plant will be located in the Great Western Industrial Park devel-oped by Denver’s Broe Group. About 10 jobs will be created initially, and up to 25 jobs created in the next three years, said Dathan Dunn, Cargill’s manager for the company’s metals division.

Minneapolis-based Cargill, the giant, privately held food and agricul-ture conglomerate, works in the food, agriculture, financial and in-dustrial sectors worldwide. It has 142,000 employees in 65 countries.Cargill’s Windsor processing plant will be operated by Cargill Metals Supply Chain (CMSC), a subsidiary that runs eight hot-rolled steel processing centers and five distribution centers worldwide.

Construction on the $10 million, 60,000-square-foot steel processing and distribution facility — Cargill’s eighth steel processing plant in the United States — will begin early this year. The processing center is expected to be up and running by the end of the year.

The processing plant joins a distribution depot Cargill opened in Fort Collins in 2011.

The plant will process hot-rolled steel coils into cut-to-length steel sheet and plate products up to a half-inch thick. It will serve customers spread across 15 western and Midwestern states, the company said.

Autoliv receives Excellence award from Volvo Car

Autoliv Inc – the worldwide leader in automotive safety systems – has received Volvo Car Corporation’s Excellence award for the development of the worlds-first pedestrian protection airbag. The new airbag first debuted on the Volvo V40/XC40 and contributed to Volvo achieving a top result in the EuroNCAP crash testing evaluation. At the award ceremony in Sweden Lars Wrebo, Senior Vice President Purchasing and Manufacturing at Volvo Car Group, recognized the excellent contribution from Autoliv with the award.

“The excellent cooperation between Volvo and Autoliv has over the past 60 years resulted in several ground-breaking safety innovations. We are proud to have been recognized by Volvo, one of the most safety-minded vehicle manufacturers in the world”, said Autoliv’s CEO Jan Carlson who received the award.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists represent nearly half of the annual 1.2 million road fatalities in the world. The main cause for fatalities among pedestrians is head injuries. Vehicle manufacturers have, in the past, mainly addressed the head injuries by focusing on creating sufficient clearance between the hood and structures in the engine compartment to allow the hood to act as a cushion. Several studies suggest that this is not enough, since adult head injuries occur even more frequently near the frames of the windshield.

Autoliv has together with Volvo developed the first outside airbag to provide protection if the head of the pedestrian hits the windshield area. In a collision with a pedestrian, the hood raises and a U-shaped airbag deploys upon the windshield to cover the scuttle and the lower parts of the windshield as well as the A-pillars to help cushion the blow to the head. Studies indicate that the airbag can reduce head injuries and fatalities by more than a third in frontal pedestrian collisions and thereby save thousands of vulnerable road users lives every year.

‘Flying Robot’ pilot helps find IEDs in Helmand

Lance Corporal Rob McInerney is currently working at the forefront of counter-IED operations in Afghanistan piloting the

‘Flying Robot’, which is part of the Talisman counter-IED system.

Talisman has been designed to provide an increased level of assurance along routes throughout the region. It consists of a suite of cutting-edge equipment, including armoured vehicles, optical cameras and remote-controlled vehicles.

This life-saving equipment is being used to support combat logistic patrols, which can comprise several hundred vehicles and trek through the country delivering vital supplies to bases for the troops on the front line.

Lance Corporal Rob McInerney, aged 26, serves with 15 Field Support Squadron, part of 21 Engineer Regiment - the first troops to use the new system on the ground in Afghanistan. See Related News.

His role is to pilot the MAV (Micro Air Vehicle), otherwise known as the ‘Flying Robot’ or ‘T-Hawk’:

“The MAV is a great piece of kit and complements the rest of the equipment,” he said. “The MAV has two cameras which feed information back to a laptop so that the commander is then better placed to make decisions.

“We have been involved in a few contacts on a couple of the operations that we have been on, which made the day interesting! The most satisfying part of the tour for me is when we get the guys to their destination safely; after all, that is the aim of our job!”

Lance Corporal McInerney has been with 15 Field Support Squadron, based in Ripon, North Yorkshire, since they re-roled from a Field Support Squadron in which he was a plant operator:

“It has been good to learn something new but I am looking forward to getting back to plant,” he said.

He is also looking forward to getting back to the UK to see his fiancée, Laura, and his daughter, Anna, who is only five months old:

“She was born two weeks before I came out here so it will be amazing to see the difference in her now,” he added.

Lance Corporal McInerney has two other brothers serving in the Army. One is serving with the Royal Signals and the other is due to deploy on operations quite soon. He said:

“My brother Dave, who is in 9 Para[chute] Squadron, Royal Engineers, is due to deploy to Afghanistan on the next tour and I wish him good luck.”

Vestas calls 2013 its 2nd-best year for North American turbine sales Vestas Wind Systems announced yet another order for wind turbines, making 2013 the manufacturer’s second-best year for orders in North America.

Vestas, which has four Colorado factories, announced last month it had received an order for 55 of its V100-2.0 megawatt turbines, capable of generating 110 megawatts of elec-tricity. The name of the customer, the location of the wind farm and terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Vestas has now announced 1,693 megawatts worth of “firm” wind turbine orders in the United States and Canada so far in 2013, a spokesman said. That’s a huge jump over 2012, when Vestas an-nounced a mere 252 megawatts worth of orders in the market.Vestas announced 1,617 megawatts worth of orders in 2011 and posted a record in 2010, when the company booked 1,883 mega-watts worth of orders.

Last year was a dismal year for wind developers and manufacturers due to the scheduled expiration of the federal wind Production Tax Credit, worth about $23 per megawatt of energy produced. The credit expired at the end of 2012, but Congress extended it in January of this year.

Wind developers now can qualify new wind farms for the credit in one of two ways, either by starting site work at a wind farm be-fore Jan. 1, 2014, or by spending at least 5 percent of the project’s total budget before that date. One of the ways to demonstrate the spending is by signing a contract for wind turbines and making a down payment for the machines.

“This order from a large, existing customer reaffirms the strength of our 2 megawatt platform — we have received over 1,000 megawatts of V100 orders in the U.S. and Canada this year,” said Chris Brown, president of Vestas’ Portland, Ore.-based sales and service division in the United States and Canada, in a statement.

Textron grows commercial reach with Beechcraft buy

Textron’s $1.4 billion purchase of Beechcraft will expand the market reach of Textron in defense sectors as well as civil work, though it’s the civilian side that will realize the most gains, say experts. “My sense for Textron is the defense business is kind of secondary,” said Byron Callan, an analyst with Capital Alpha Partners. “It’s probably more about general aviation and, frankly, taking a potential com-petitor off the table and boosting Cessna.”

Intermountain Precision Machine (IPM) and Smith Machinery Co. have a long history together. For one, Klaus Lassig, Sales Engineer for Smith Machinery and Ralph Dlugas, founder and owner of IPM, worked together nearly 2 decades ago at a local machine shop in Salt Lake City. Clark Smith, president of Smith Machinery Co. called on Klaus and Ralph during these years. But even before this, Klaus and Ralph’s fathers, Gunter and Sigmund, worked together as machinists many years ago. Then, when Ralph opened IPM in 1996, Ralph says that Clark was the only machine tool dealer in the valley who took him seriously and supported him. “We didn’t have banks lined up to help us out. Clark and Mazak literally helped us to get the business launched with financing and machine tools. I’ve never forgotten that.” Ralph says that now all of the local dealers call on him regularly that he is an established, thriving business entity.

Ralph didn’t intend to become a machinist. Since his father was in the industry, he started working for machine shops in his early teens. Ralph wanted to be an electronic technician, and he went to school to study the trade. Ralph says, “When I learned that others in the program, some already experienced electricians, were making less than I was making as a relatively new machinist, I knew that machining was the career for me.”

Ralph didn’t plan to open a business for himself, either. “But”, he says, “I didn’t want to look back in 30 years working for the same company making the same parts day in and day out. It was this desire that prompted me to start my own business.” Ralph was a young 25 years old when he first went into business for himself.

IPM opened for business nearly 2 decades ago, in 1996. “Fat pigs get slaughtered”, Ralph said. “IPM’s business model is based upon making the best parts for our customers, at the best price possible. We don’t spend costly resources on fancy websites, elaborate conference rooms, or all those extras. When machine shops do this, they are adding cost to their operation that has to be passed on to their customers. We just don’t do that.”

IPM’s customers hear some very unusual feedback from Ralph and the team. Ralph says, “When we price a part for a customer that is based upon very small quantities, and those quantities grow, we come back to them with a price reduction, sometimes even retroactively.” He continued, “Our customers tell us that this just doesn’t happen with most of their suppliers.”

In Ralph’s words, “IPM was blessed to be awarded business from its customers.” Ralph says, “Early in business, we were awarded business from a company in the oil industry. We per-formed well, and we were placed on their preferred supplier list. Others in the oil and gas industry, both from different divisions within the company, as well as from some other companies in the industry, heard what we were doing, and

our business in this industry grew exponentially. Today, we ship products to the oil and gas industry across the United States, largely into Texas, and our products ship regularly internationally, into Singapore and Dubai.”

Ralph and the team at IPM may indeed be blessed, but they are also doing some great things to retain and grow their customer base. “Integrity” is key to their business model.

“Do the right things for your customers, and always do it with rigorous honesty”, Ralph says. The company gets report cards, and they are an A+ supplier in quality.

Ralph says, “I select suppliers whose philosophy mirrors mine. Smith Machinery Co. shares my values. Not only was Clark and the team the only machine tool dealer willing to support me early on, but over the past 18 years they have continued to provide superior customer support, always with integrity.” Ralph now owns 14 Mazak machines, and he admits that he doesn’t look at competitive machines when making new purchases. In addition to the integrity Smith Machinery possesses, Ralph just plain likes the Mazak machines. He says, “I like Mazaks because they are simple to run. Mazak has kept their Mazatrol controls consistent over the years, and this ease of machining helps to keep our training costs down. This is just another example of doing the right things to help contain costs for our customers.”

Ralph prefers to hire younger people with less experience and train them, somewhat like the old apprentiship pro-grams many companies implemented. Ralph sends each and every employee to Mazak’s training classes, and he mentors them personally. It appears to be a winning strategy, as IPM’s turnover is very low. Well trained, long term employees help to retain quality and keep training costs down for IPM.

IPM recently is participating in the design and manufacture of a variety of new environmental inventions. Ralph says that he is supporting a company called Greenstep. The company is developing products that will pull clean drinking water out of thin air with a Water Farm and facilitate growing food without sunlight with their Gyro Farm, just to name a few of their innovations. Ralph is passionate about helping children all over the world, and particularly, in developing countries, where clean drinking water are not readily available. You can learn more about Greenstep at greenstep.com.

Colorado and Utah cities rank among nation’s 20 ‘best performing’ for jobs, tech

Denver and three other Colorado metro areas are among the nation’s top 20 “best-performing cities,” with Greeley’s dramatic rise in the ranking fueled by the oil and gas boom, according to an annual report from the Milken Institute.

The report aims to identify “where America’s jobs are created and sustained.”

Boulder comes in at No. 9 on the latest list, which covers 2013, and Greeley is No. 10, while Den-ver-Aurora-Broomfield lands at No. 15 and Fort Collins-Loveland is No. 20.

The Austin, Texas, metro area takes the top spot, followed by Provo-Orem, Utah; San Francisco; San Jose; and Salt Lake City.

Milken — an economic think tank based in Santa Monica, Calif. — says its best-performing cities

index “was designed to measure objectively which U.S. metropol-itan areas are promoting economic vitality based on job creation and retention, the quality of new jobs, and other cr iter ia. The index shows where employment is stable and expanding, wages and salaries are increasing, and economies and businesses are thriving.”

It bases its rankings in part on cit-ies’ rates of growth in employment, wages and production over various spans of time, as well as the health of local high-tech industries.

The report says metro Denver “has witnessed broad-based job growth and ranked 30th in recent job growth for the year ending July 2013. High-tech GDP con-centration exceeds the national average by 60 percent, and the metro’s high-tech industry mix is relatively diverse. Administrative and support services along with professional and scientific services created over 9,500 jobs in 2011-2012.”

Manufacturing Sector Grew At A Healthy Pace In December

McClatchy reports the ISM Man-ufacturing Index came in with a reading of 57 last month. The new orders and production components of the manufacturing index came in above 60 in December.

Bloomberg News reports the ISM number means “manufacturing grew in December at the second-fastest pace in more than two years,” and that “factory purchasing managers said orders were the strongest since April 2010.”

The AP reports production and a measure of manufacturers’ stock-piles dropped in December. A gauge of hiring rose to its highest level since June 2011.

Ball Aerospace Completes Primary Structure For JPSS-1

Ball Aerospace & Technol-ogies Corp. has achieved a pivotal milestone for assuring continuity of the nation’s future weather and storm forecasting by completing the primary bus structure of the first

satellite in the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS-1). JPSS-1 is the follow-on in a series of next generation satellites and is scheduled for launch in early 2017.

Procured by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), through the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), JPSS-1 will continue the observations now provided by the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) satellite, also built by Ball and launched in 2011. The continuity these satel-lites provide on orbit is critical for ensuring the nation’s ability to accurately predict severe weather.

“We remain ahead of schedule in meeting our milestones,” said Cary Ludtke, vice president and general manager for Ball’s Operational Space business unit. “JPSS-1 will operationalize the advanced tech-nologies currently being demonstrated on Suomi NPP, and with the satellite’s core structure complete, we can now push on to assembly,

integration and test as we prepare for instrument integration in November 2014.”

Ball is under contract to NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center to design and build the JPSS-1 satellite bus, the Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS) instrument, integrate all instruments, and perform satellite-level testing and launch support.

JPSS-1 will provide essential data for civil and military weather-fore-casting, storm tracking, and climate-monitoring. The data from JPSS-1 will be used by the National Weather Service in models for forecasts three to seven days ahead of a severe weather event. This weather forecasting will allow scientists and forecasters to monitor and predict weather patterns with greater speed and accuracy, while also giving emergency managers and the public time to prepare.

Forecast: SMBs to up social media ad spend in 2014

According to Ad-ology Research’s latest Small Business Marketing Forecast, a quarter of SMBs already active on social media expect to up their spend to advertise on sites such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn during 2014.

Furthermore, many (80%) SMBs active in social media plan on spend-ing the same, or more, on social marketing this year. While 41% of SMBs do not currently use promoted posts or sponsored Tweets almost 14% plan to spend more on these platforms this year.

According to C. Lee Smith, president and CEO of Ad-ology Research, small businesses (those with at least 25 employees) aren’t using social media to avoid the costs of advertising. Indeed, these firms are among those most likely to advertise on social networks.

Email marketing continues to be the mainstay of SMBs marketing efforts. Over three-quarters (78%) of the 1,169 U.S. small business owners and marketing decision makers surveyed by Ad-ology Research sent ‘email blasts’ in 2013 and 20% plan to send even more in 2014.

The report also found that 31.1% of SMBs are still without a website. Of those that do have a website, more than 60% are not optimized for mobile. Furthermore, just 8.9% of SMBs are currently using online or mobile video and 40% have no plans to incorporate customer testimonials to bolster marketing efforts in 2014.

Federal Reserve Board Chairman Expects Economic Recovery To Strengthen In 2014

In a cover story, TIME profiles newly confirmed Federal Reserve Board Chairman Janet Yellen, portraying her as scholarly but attuned to the effects Fed policy has on working-class Americans: “She is also the first chair who is an openly reform-minded Keynesian – meaning she lives by the belief that monetary policy can temper the swings of the business cycle, strengthening the economy for workers as well as financiers.”

In an exclusive interview before her confirmation, Yellen said the Fed consensus was that growth would be stronger than expected at

about 3 percent for 2014, and that the housing market will continue to recover. Yellen said her first priority is to reduce unemployment to 5.2-5.8 percent, but she would also like to see real wages rise.

Equipment Leasing and Finance Association Announces Top 10 Equipment Acquisition Trends for 2014

The Equipment Leasing and Finance Association (ELFA) which rep-resents the $827 billion equipment finance sector, revealed its Top 10 Equipment Acquisition Trends for 2014. Given U.S. businesses, nonprofits and government agencies will spend in excess of $1.5 trillion in capital goods or fixed business investment (including soft-ware) this year, financing more than half of those assets, these trends impact a significant portion of the U.S. economy. Businesses will need to consider a dynamic environment of economic growth, wider credit availability, and favorable interest rates in their equipment acquisition decision-making.

ELFA President and CEO William G. Sutton, CAE, said, “For a ma-jority of U.S. businesses, equipment financing is a critical source of funding, helping them to acquire the equipment they need to operate and grow. Equipment acquisition plays a critical role in driving the supply chains across all U.S. manufacturing and service sectors. To assist businesses in planning their acquisition strategies, we have dis-tilled recent research data, including the Equipment Leasing & Finance Foundation’s 2014 Equipment Leasing & Finance U.S. Economic Outlook Report, industry participants’ expertise and member input from ELFA meetings and conferences to provide our best insight for the Top 10 Equipment Acquisition Trends for 2014.”

ELFA forecasts the following Top 10 Equipment Acquisition Trends for 2014:

1. Investment in equipment and software will reach an all-time high in 2014. As the U.S. economy and underlying economic fundamentals, including GDP, continue to improve, business investment is forecast to reach a record $1.5 trillion in 2014.

2. Equipment replacement demand will continue to drive investment. Stronger economic growth will boost businesses’ confidence and ap-petite for capital expenditures, but overall, equipment already in place can be used at a higher capacity. Until businesses find they need to expand their capacity to meet operational demands, their equipment

investment will be in replacing existing aging or obsolete equipment. 3.Demand for equipment financing will increase due to greater sta-bility in the federal budgeting process. Businesses will enjoy a greater level of comfort than they have in recent years to make their equip-ment acquisition decisions for 2014. The two-year budget agreement passed by Congress reduces fiscal pressures and lessens the chance of a potential government shutdown, while a rising tide of economic growth will lift all boats. As equipment acquisitions increase, so will businesses’ demand to finance them. 4. The global economy will play a part in the “big picture” impacting businesses’ equipment acquisition decisions. The lack of long-term breakout growth and expansion in equipment acquisition has some of its causes beyond U.S. shores. External factors like the stagnant Eurozone, foreign oil prices and the cooling of a hot Chinese economy, which have combined to impede growth, will continue in 2014. 5. Rebounding of some industry sectors will spur varied equipment types. Growth in investment is forecast for numerous equipment types, some of which will be the result of increased activity in the housing and energy sectors. The rebounding housing industry will have spillover effects on equipment verticals, including construction as well as trucking and rail transportation to ship homebuilding supplies. Manufacturers’ plans for billions of dollars in investments to take advantage of cheap, rapidly expanding U.S. supplies of oil and natu-ral gas will expand production capacity for energy and downstream products, such as petrochemicals and plastics, and increase demand for industrial equipment. 6. A majority of U.S. businesses will use some form of financing for equipment acquisition. In 2014, investment in plant, equipment and software in the United States is projected to reach $1.5 trillion, of which 57 percent ($860 billion) is expected to be financed through loans, leases and lines of credit, a slight uptick from 55 percent in 2013. In a continuing trend, seven out of 10 businesses will use at least one form of financing to acquire equipment. 7. Credit market conditions will remain favorable for long-term equip-ment financing. In a continuing trend from last year, businesses will generally find an increasing credit supply as they consider equipment

Page 47: A2Z Metalworker Rocky Mtn Edition jan feb 2014

A2Z METALWORKER • 47 • Jan/Feb 2014

acquisitions.

8. A low short-term interest rate environ-ment will continue, while long-term rates will rise but remain below the historical average. Businesses that want to conserve cash and take advantage of the many other benefits of financing their equipment ac-quisitions can look forward to the prospect of continued low short-term interest rates until 2015. Although the Federal Reserve’s policy agenda for 2014 will likely result in a rise in long-term interest rates, inducing some companies to lock in lower rates, they will remain low enough by historical stan-dards to keep financing an attractive option for acquiring equipment.

9. Technology innovations will continue to improve the customer experience. While demand for software and technology equip-ment is expected to remain strong, equip-ment finance companies will use technology to optimize their delivery and fulfillment systems around customer service. They will meet a growing demand for cloud and mo-bile technology as well as access to real-time company data and business intelligence.

10. Long-awaited changes to the lease accounting standard will continue to be debated. A new draft of proposed lease accounting changes issued by the Financial Accounting Standards Board and the Inter-national Accounting Standards Board issued in 2013 generated substantial opposition for being too burdensome and complex. As a result, the Boards will continue re-delib-erations into 2014 and will conduct addi-tional meetings to address concerns before changes are adopted.

GE ‘all in’ on aviation deal with China

At a General Electric flight simulator here, the visibility has been set at near zero to mimic thick rain and clouds. But a video console near the pilot shows a vivid picture of nearby mountains precise enough to allow a plane to take off or land despite the conditions.

The system is one of several highly valuable next-generation technologies that GE has developed — and that the company has passed along to China as part of a joint venture with the state-owned Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC).

Access to the world’s second-largest economy is critical for nearly any global company. Yet this often comes at a cost: the transfer of the very technologies that leading business officials — including GE chief executive Jeffrey Immelt, who heads an Obama administration panel on U.S. jobs and competitiveness — cite as essential to the United States’ economic future. The “synthetic vision” system, for example, could be worth millions of dollars to airlines, which could significantly reduce costs from weather-related delays.

GE, like other companies, must weigh which technologies should be brought to joint ventures with China and how to protect them from being stolen or misused. These decisions face virtually any executive trying to develop a presence in the country — from the most sophisticated technology firms, which worry about software piracy, to old-line industrial equipment makers, which have seen knockoffs of their products pop up soon after making deals with Chinese partners. Under the agreement with AVIC, GE avionics will be on board a new Chinese commercial airliner that is likely to become a rival to aircraft produced by U.S.-based Boeing and Europe’s Airbus. The potential competition with Boeing, coming at a time when the United States is fighting to maintain its own manufacturing base, has stirred some American criticism.

But GE executives say they have had no second thoughts. China’s airplane market is booming, and the deal was too important to pass up, they said, even at the cost of sharing the avionics technology.

“We are all in and we don’t want it back,” said Lorraine Bolsinger, chief executive of GE Aviation Systems. She said new airplanes don’t come along that often, and that the chance to be part of developing a major new aircraft is not to be missed — even if most of the jobs will be in Shanghai or elsewhere in China.

“We don’t sell bananas,” she said in an interview here. “We can’t afford to take a decade off.”

But American business leaders wonder privately whether companies such as GE are at risk of giving up long-term strategic advantages when they agree to technology-transfer deals for shorter-term gain.GE executives maintain that is not the case. They say that they negotiated robust protections in their contract with AVIC. The 50-50 joint venture, for example, has strict limits on employing Chinese nationals who have a military or intelligence background. A board committee that monitors compliance with the joint venture agreement is effectively under GE’s control and can, in a dispute, overrule the full board, Bolsinger said.

Factories ‘Reshore’ Some Work From Overseas

During the worst of the Great Recession, U.S. factory jobs were disappearing at a furious pace. As 2007 began, about 14 million Americans were working in manufacturing. Three years and one frightful recession later, only 11.5 million were. But since 2010, employment has been ticking back up, with companies adding about 400,000 jobs.

One reason for at least a small portion of that growth: the return of factory work from overseas. Experts say it’s difficult to accurately measure the number of jobs tied to work returning from other countries, but some employers say they know it is happening. Reversing A Herd Mentality Howard Hauser, a vice president with Hiawatha Rubber Co., says for a long time, manufacturers followed a herd mentality of sending work offshore. They all wanted components produced in low-wage, emerging markets like China. “They were looking at the piece price. And it looked like, ’We’re going to save a lot of money,’” he said. “But the bottom line was they didn’t save nearly as much as they thought. And with the quality issues, they’re just not getting product that’s acceptable for the customer.”

Now Hiawatha, based outside Minneapolis, is getting those contracts. And Hauser has himself decided to “reshore” production of a component that was being made in China. The move will result in three new hires at his plant. He says the part was not difficult to make, but the Chinese factory kept botching the job. He says Hiawatha, which makes rubber components for equipment such as printers and pumps, can do it better.

From Soup To Overtime As business picks up and hiring resumes, the employees at Hiawatha are feeling more confident now. But it’s still painful to recall the recent tough times when orders dropped off about 40 percent and production hours were slashed. One worker, Richard Beaulieu, says he had to make do while working just three or four days a week. That went on for nearly a year. His memory of that lean time: “Many, many months, and a lot of soup,” he says. “But you just buck it up and get through it.”

Beaulieu and the other 65 full-timers are back to normal hours now — and can even count on some overtime.

The U.S. Looks More Competitive Dan Meckstroth, an economist with the Manufacturers Alliance for Productivity and Innovation, says labor in the United States is looking more competitive internationally for a number of reasons. For one, U.S. wages are still depressed because of the relatively slow overall recovery. At the same time, wages have been rising in emerging markets. In addition, the skill level of American workers is generally higher. And the supply chain disruptions after last year’s Japanese disasters made some companies skittish about outsourcing to Asia, he said.

But Meckstroth says it’s hard to quantify any job gains from “reshoring.” The number may not be great, but at least the trend line is good, he said. “I’m not saying there’s a tsunami of production coming back to the United States. It’s a trickle,” Meckstroth said. “But a trickle back is better than the tidal wave out.” But at Hiawatha Rubber, Hauser does not think the future of manufacturing lies in bringing work back, even if that’s benefiting his company now. He believes greater productivity for the sector will come through increased automation. At his factory, more

Ball Aerospace Hands Over STPSat-3 Opera-tions to U.S. Air Force

Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. announced that operational con-trol of the Space Test Program Satellite-3 (STPSat-3) has been handed over to the U.S. Air Force as the spacecraft begins its technology demonstration mission.

The Ball-built STPSat-3 launched from Wallops Flight Center in Virginia on November 19, 2013 aboard a Minotaur I, along with 28 CubeSats as part of the Operationally Responsive Space-3 (ORS-3) mission. The spacecraft was fully checked out and operational within 71 hours of launch, nearly three hours ahead of schedule.

Ball designed the Standard Interface Vehicle (SIV), a common space-craft bus with standard payload interfaces to accelerate Department of Defense space technology demonstrations and to ensure future U.S. space superiority. STPSat-3 is the second SIV developed by Ball which is now part of the company’s Ball Configurable Platform (BCP) spacecraft line.

Assembled in only 47 days, STPSat-3 repeatedly demonstrated its ability to add or remove payloads even after the spacecraft bus was completed.

Roughly the size of a mini refrigerator, the satellite carries five technol-ogy demonstration payloads and a de-orbit module for the Department of Defense, NASA and NOAA.

“We designed the SIV architecture to reduce the cost and time required to access space while maximizing the opportunities for suitable pay-loads,” said Dave Kaufman, vice president and general manager of Ball’s National Defense business unit. “STPSat-3’s predecessor, STPSat-2, just passed its three-year anniversary on orbit and has proven the robustness of the SIV design.”

Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. supports critical missions for national agencies such as the Department of Defense, NASA, NOAA and other U.S. government and commercial entities. The company develops and manufactures spacecraft, advanced instruments and sensors, components, data exploitation systems and RF solutions for strategic, tactical and scientific applications.
