EMJD Owners in Front of Their Lift-

Master TRUMPF

Many of us are sharing the incredible pride, joy and sense of accomplishment as our family members and/or friends are just now graduating. In my family, new graduates range from a 50 year old to my own 24 year old daughter, who is now a Pharmacist. You are never too old to take on new challenges in education - if it is what you want to do.

And while I am not particularly a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, I recently read about an inspiring NFL player. All-World safety Troy Polamalu used the NFL lockout to finish something he had long wanted to do - he returned

to his alma mater of USC and completed his degree in history in time to take part in a ceremony with thousands of students last month.

Polamalu was drafted in 2003, but didn’t have time to complete his degree. The 30-year-old Polamalu posted his thoughts about the event on his website, www.troy43.com: “I’m thrilled to announce that on this cool, sunny Friday morning I donned a cap and gown, walked across the stage in the beautiful Alumni Park at University of Southern California, and was handed my diploma. I’m officially a USC graduate! While I feel excited and fulfilled, that’s not really what I want to focus on in this message — I want to talk about the reason behind my decision to go back and finish what I started.” Check out his website for his strong desire to finish school and for his philanthropic educational endeavors!

On another related note, my customer and friend Glen Zachman added me to daily inspirational messages sent from Lou Tice, of the Pacific Institute. This particular email was entitled - “A Message to Students”. I am sharing excerpts with you because I feel there is a very poignant message, not just for young graduates, but for all of us. Here it is:

“I would like to say a few words to young people, heading into “graduation season,” about education and about being successful after they graduate from school.

Regardless of your field or interests, education by and of itself is not going to be enough to get you where you want to go. I know many of you have done a lot of work in school and you want to reap some rewards for that work. But the rewards that you earn, both material and otherwise, will not come from the knowledge you have, but rather the uses to which you put that knowledge.

The world will not pay you for what you know. It will, however, pay you for what you can do with what you know. This means that you need to have the courage to act on your knowledge - to think creatively, risk criticism and failure, and to curb your anxiety level when the pressure is on.

Taking risks means moving out of your comfort zone. Believe in yourself and see yourself succeeding, no matter what happens, and reality will bear you out. You’ve done it before. You can do it again!”

Until next issue, may your businesses continue to prosper, and God Bless our Troops!

US.Manufacturing.Continues.To. Ex-pand

The ISM Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index was broadly cov-ered in the media, which most sources mentioning manufacturing’s key role in helping the US regain its economic footing. It was also noted that April’s expansion marked a slight decline from March, due in part to higher input costs, but that overall the results, and the outlook for the sector, are very good. The impact of a weak dollar was also noted.

The AP reports, “The nation’s manufacturing sector has expanded this year at the fastest pace in a quarter-century, boosted by a weak dollar that has made US goods cheap overseas.” The strong manufacturing sec-tor “could help the economy rebound after experiencing weak growth in the first three months of this year,” although other industries such as construction are still struggling, and raw materials prices remain a concern. “The Institute for Supply Management said that manufactur-ing activity expanded in April for the 21st straight month.” Although the reading of 60.4 represents a decline from 61.2 in March, it still indicates manufacturing growth.

Boeing’s.first.Dreamliner.passes.1,000-hour.testing.mark

The first of six Boeing 787 Dreamliner test aircraft passed 1,000 hours of flight in the testing program, Boeing said.

The aircraft, which first flew 16 months ago was returning to Seattle’s

Boeing Field from Canada where it had participated in crosswind testing when it passed the 1,000-hour milestone, the company said.

Boeing said Dreamliners equipped with Rolls-Royce Trent engines have accomplished 90 percent of the testing needed for certification. Other Dreamliners are powered by General Electric engines. Testing of the GE-equipped planes is not as close to completion because those planes flew later than the Rolls-Royce-engined aircraft.

The first production Dreamliner is due for delivery to launch customer All Nippon Airways in the third quarter of this year. That’s more than three years behind the date Boeing initially promised.

Parts shortages, production and design problems, an inflight fire and labor issues have delayed the Dreamliner’s commercial debut.

GD.to.Support.US.Army.Abrams.Tanks

The M1 Abrams is the main US battle tank designed to provide mo-bile fire power capable of destroying any opposing armored fighting vehicle, while providing protection for its crew in any possible combat environment.

Work will be carried out at the company’s facility in Sterling Heights, Michigan, US, and is estimated for completion on 19 December 2011.

New. 3D. Solar.Technology.Boosts. Ef-ficiency

Anyone who follows news on new solar technology is probably aware that conversion efficiency, that is, the amount of solar light, that actually becomes electricity, is the top challenge for this industry. Currently the top conversion rate is around 18% which means there’s definitely room for much more efficiency.

In a recent interview, Hypersolar’s CEO Tim Young said what we should be looking for “disruptive technologies”, which are technolo-gies that represent game-changing breakthroughs, not traditional technologies that may not be economically viable over the long term without government subsidies. “We need technologies that will boost performance by 500% or 1,000%, not 1% or 2%”, Mr. Young told Energy Refuge.

A new technology developed by Oak Ridge National Laboratory doesn’t quite do that, but it succeeds in improving light-to-power conversion efficiency of photovoltaics by almost 80%.

The technology was developed by Jun Xu and consists of a 3-D nanocone-based solar cell platform made of zinc oxide. The n-type nanocones are surrounded by a p-type semiconductor and serve as the junction framework and the electron conductor. The p-type matrix is made of polycrystalline cadmium telluride and serves as the primary photon absorber medium and hole conductor.

Xu and his colleagues said they were able to achieve a light-to-power conversion efficiency of 3.2%. The usual rate for conventional planar structure of the same material is 1.8%.

“We designed the three-dimensional structure to provide an intrinsic electric field distribution that promotes efficient charge transport and high efficiency in converting energy from sunlight into electric-ity,” Xu said.

The laboratory said some of the key features of the solar material include its unique electric field distribution that achieves efficient charge transport; the synthesis of nanocones using inexpensive proprietary methods; and the minimization of defects and voids in semiconductors. The latter provides enhanced electric and optical properties for conversion of solar photons to electricity.

Another positive quality of the new solar cell is that it can tolerate defective materials and reduce cost in fabricating next-generation solar cells.

The research behind this technology was accepted by this year’s Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers photovoltaic special-ist conference and will be published in the IEEE Proceedings. The papers are titled “Efficient Charge Transport in Nanocone Tip-Film Solar Cells” and “Nanojunction solar cells based on polycrystalline CdTe films grown on ZnO nanocones.”

ATK.Steps.Up.F-35.Structures.Work

ATK is gradually gearing up production of composite parts for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter from three ship sets per month to eight under a $110 million contract from JSF prime contractor Lockheed Martin.

The contract, covering parts for aircraft for low-rate initial pro-duction (LRIP) Lots 5 through 9, includes upper fixed aft skins for both the F-35C carrier variant (CV) and F-35B short-takeoff-and-vertical-landing (Stovl) variant, upper access covers on the CV and F-35A conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) variant, and the upper access center covers for the F-35B variant.

ATK says the rate built up for the three versions reflects the slowed procurement of the F-35B, which is currently serving a two-year

“probation” period pending performance improvements. While probation does not affect testing, it limits F-35B procurement to six each in fiscal 2012 and 2013. Production will take place at ATK’s Clearfield, Utah, facility beginning this year and continuing through 2015.

The company is currently working on upper wing-box skins, lower wing-box skins, and engine nacelle skins for LRIP Lot 4 through 8 F-35A and B versions under a $240 million contract awarded last April. ATK, which began F-35 production in October 2002, has thus far delivered more than 850 wing skin components through LRIP Lot 4.

ATK’s Rocket Center, W.Va., site is also delivering composite inlet ducts for Lot 4 aircraft to Northrop Grumman under a $10 million contract awarded in 2010.

Force.Protection.and.CAE.Jointly.Com-pete.for.Canadian.TAPV.Project

Force Protection Industries and CAE have teamed up to compete for Canada’s tactical armored patrol vehicle (TAPV) project.

According to the agreement, Force Protection will offer Cougar wheeled combat vehicles variants to meet Canadian forces’ TAPV requirements.

CAE would provide in-service support (ISS) solutions including ve-hicle operator and mission training systems, engineering information environment, fleet management services, and systems engineering support as well as lifecycle and integrated logistics support services.

Force Protection was selected as a competitor company to compete for the Canadian contract, which includes providing up to 600 wheeled combat vehicles and related long-term support services.

The contract is expected to be awarded to the final selected bidder by early 2012.

Pentagon.acquisition.chief.promises.rewards.for.good.suppliers

The Pentagon is launching a preferred supplier program to incen-tivize its vendors as part of a larger effort to promote competition and curb unnecessary paperwork and other bureaucratic hurdles in the procurement process.

Ashton Carter, the Pentagon’s acquisition chief, said the Defense Department is making changes in hopes of driving down the cost of programs. He and Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates last year first unveiled a departmental effort, dubbed the “better buying

Speaking at the Heritage Foundation recently, Carter offered an update on the effort to date.

He said the Pentagon is readying the Superior Supplier Incentive Program, designed to recognize contractors who receive high marks in the Defense Department’s performance-tracking system.

The recognition won’t help suppliers win work, but if they do re-ceive orders, they could see better performance payments, among other rewards, said Carter.

Additionally, Carter said he is now requiring all program managers to have a competitive strategy, or an explanation for how they will use competition to reduce the cost of their program.

Acknowledging that head-to-head competition isn’t always feasible, Carter said there are other ways to cut program costs, such as contract provisions that provide companies a share of any savings they produce.

The Pentagon also plans to reduce “non-productive processes and bureaucracy,” Carter said.

Paperwork the department mandates not only costs money, but also obstructs companies unaccustomed to defense work, he said.

“It’s important that we have an open defense system that is attrac-tive and isn’t so exotic to sell to that companies, particularly small companies, can’t do it,” Carter said.

He said the Pentagon will consider canceling more existing weap-ons programs but will also focus on driving down the costs of new programs.

“You see that philosophy reflected in the new tanker,” Carter said of the Defense Department’s recent award to Boeing to build the next-generation aerial refueling tanker.

The fixed-price contract means “we, the government, are insulated against cost growth in the tanker program, he said.

and fabricated parts at night.

Business grew, and in 1974 EMJD pur-chased a little over an acre worth of prop-erty and built their manufacturing facility which today comprises over 24,000 square feet.

All of Donald and Dorothy’s children grew up working in the business in some fashion, but it soon became evident that Scott was the natural fit. Scott pursued a Bachelor of Science degree from Colorado State University in Industrial Technology and after completion returned to EMJD as their Foreman. Scott and his father worked together at first, but Scott wanted

to see and ex-perience more than EMJD of-fered at the time so that he could eventually bring new skills and expertise back to the company for expansion.

In 1991, Scott accepted a po-sition with The Boe ing Com-pany and was off to Seattle. Scott spent close to

three years with Boeing and another two plus years at a temperature switch and con-trols manufacturer. After completing his MBA at Seattle University, Scott accepted a position at Ingersoll Rand as the General Manger for their Material Handling Busi-ness, all the while honing his experience and skill sets.

Although Scott was pursuing other avenues

I am sure of it.

If you are looking for a superior precision sheet metal fabrication supplier and you come to Engle-wood, Colorado for an onsite tour of their facility – you will select EMJD as a new supplier. The 41 year old company not only has superior skilled employees, but it has some of the most state-of-the-art, technology efficient equipment that you will see in a job shop anywhere in the country. Today, the company is owned by partners Scott Noyes and Jeff Madsen. But a little about how it got started is pertinent.

Donald Noyes founded EMJD in 1970. Don spent 12 years in manufacturing in Santa Clara working as a foreman for a company called EMJ. When a trend emerged where businesses were moving out of California and into places like Colorado, Don was approached by several customers and asked if he would consider opening his own precision sheet metal shop there. Soon afterwards, Donald and Dorothy along with their 4 children were on their way to beautiful Colorado. Donald added his signature to EMJ with the first initial of his first name. Hence, EMJD was formed.

In the early days of EMJD, Donald and his wife were the sole employees of the company. Dorothy handled the accounting/office functions, and Don made sales calls during the day,

outside of EMJD, he was never far away from the business and he encouraged his long term friend Jeff Madsen, who had just returned to Colorado from working in Hawaii, to talk to his father Donald about a job. Jeff did, 23 years ago, and was hired on at EMJD in the Ship-ping and Receiving Department. Jeff was a newcomer to the manufacturing industry, but he was an excellent student while those at EMJD mentored him and he pursued classes in manufacturing engineering at Metropolitan State College at night.

It wasn’t long before Jeff became Don’s right hand man, Scott said.

Meanwhile, Jeff and Scott agreed to a plan to buy out Donald, and in 2001 after returning to Colorado, Scott and Jeff became the new active owners.

For the first 6 months, as Scott and Jeff transitioned the company ownership, Scott asked that his father continue managing the business. “I made an office for myself upstairs, out of the way of day to day operations, and simply analyzed the business for ways in which we could build a foundation capable of supporting the business as we positioned ourselves for growth to the next level. Using JobBoss, I created quotes for customers, and compared them to Don’s manual, expert methods. This allowed us to perfect the quoting process using automated systems. Today, we use a fully integrated system encompassing all business processes from initial job quotes through order completion, including accounting and payroll functions.”

During the ownership transition, Scott also took the opportunity to visit TRUMPF in Germany, to see their operations and to meet with many of TRUMPF’s customers. This was key to EMJD, as they were planning to make a laser purchase, and had narrowed it

down to 3-4 key builders.

Jeff says, “We spent time before Scott’s trip at IMTS really evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of each of the builders. We were convinced that the TRUMPF laser was the best machine in the industry, but there weren’t a lot of them in Colorado. For that reason, we were concerned about support.”

Scott says, “TRUMPF helped us to feel comfortable with an extended warranty, a 48 hour response time commitment, as well as “tele-support”, now called teledi-agnostic support. Other manufacturers didn’t have “tele-support”, and were ner-vous about allowing the end user to make machine adjustments at the direction of a technical expert across the phone”.

Scott continued, “We bought our first TRUMPF in February of 2002 and from the very first day we owned it, we have found their service and support to be ex-ceptional.” Scott and Jeff believe that they were the first precision fabrication shop to own a 4000 watt TRUMPF machine in the Rocky Mountain Region.

Business continued to grow (approxi-mately 20% per year) under Scott and Jeff’s management, and they soon needed a new press brake. Again, the two did their homework, analyzing several different builders.

“We selected the TRUMPF V130 10 axis brake”, Jeff said, “and made the purchasein October of 2004. What sold us on the TRUMPF was the style of tooling they offered, their flexibility, and our prior experience with their customer sup-port. Overall, TRUMPF had a clean way for us to produce our parts from initial electronic design through manufacturing. All in all, you can just say we continued to view TRUMPF as providing the best machines and solutions out there.”

“There is something interesting about the TRUMPF philosophy that you don’t see with other manufacturers”, Scott says. “As a company, they are very conservative and honest in their claims of what their

A2Z METALWORKER • 20 • May/June 2011

machines can do, almost to a fault. Other machine tool build-ers will tell you their machines can do things that they really can’t accomplish.”

Today, there are a number of TRUMPFs in the Front Range. Scott says, “Over the last 10 years, our TRUMPF team has included many great individuals including Al Bolen, Ippei Tanaka and our current Sales Engineer Don Jones. They have all done such an outstanding job of supporting us that we allow them to bring anyone interested in purchasing a TRUMPF into our facility. Once these fabrication shops see what we have, and have been able to accomplish in partnership with TRUMPF, they are sold.”

Scott says that TRUMPF has come a long way since EMJD made their first TRUMPF purchase. He says, “Now they offer their own financing, which simplifies the buying process. Also, they are becoming a little less conservative, and have done a good job thinking outside the box when it comes to innovative new machines and designs. Additionally, Don Jones has even helped us find a new homes for our current machines as we continue to upgrade and innovate.”

EMJD came to TRUMPF when they needed a turn-key solution for a press brake with robotics. “We were pushing the envelope of current builders capabilities and introducing a lot of new technologies,” Scott says. TRUMPF engaged their worldwide engineering team, designed and built needed custom tooling in Austria, and assigned expert resources to solve the demand-ing technical challenges. I can say that TRUMPF’s Application Engineer Brett Thompson really was instrumental in delivering us a machine and solution to meet our needs.”

Today, EMJD also has just installed one of the largest robotic laser cutting cells with a fully automated load and unload system that you will see in a precision fab shop on the West Coast -- with their newest TRUMPF acquisition. The table size is 80” wide

by 160” long, allowing them to cut custom and larger parts for their customers. Jeff says, “Every time we invest in a TRUMPF machine, we feel it was the right thing to do long after we’ve made the purchase. That’s not always the case when we buy other machines. Our newest TRUMPF robotic press brake cell runs 24x7 unattended, and it saves us 4 people in manpower per day. Additionally, it is posi-tioning us to continue to fulfill and exceed our customer expectations and allowing us to create a working environment that greatly reduces and avoids ergonomic challenges when employees were performing repetitive functions that the robot now can perform.”

U.S..Army.Issues.2nd.Humvee.RFI

The U.S. Army issued its second request for information for the competitive Humvee recapitalization program, which is meant to upgrade 60,000 vehicles for no more than $180,000 a copy.

Army officials have said they want additional armor to put the Hum-vee’s survivability on par with the mine-resistant, ambush-protected all-terrain vehicle but still keep it lighter than the M-ATV.

Congress denied the Army’s request to shift money from buying new Humvees toward a recap program last year forcing the service to issue a second RFI after the Army published the first one in January 2010.

The Marine Corps could join the Army on the Humvee recap pro-gram by the time the Army is ready to issue a request for proposal, Col. David Bassett, the Army’s project manager for tactical vehicles, said.

Marine Corps officials had already sent out an RFI to recap their Humvee fleet. As the Pentagon looks for budget savings, Bassett said it might make sense to bring the programs together.

BAE Systems, Oshkosh and AM General, which makes the Humvee, have each developed kits that could compete for the Humvee recap contract. Each featured everything from double-V hull underbodies to advanced armor to structural blast channels, which vents a blast and provides structural stiffening.

The recap program is part of the Army’s Tactical Wheeled Vehicle Strategy the service released in January. The Army plans to stop buy-ing new Humvees by 2012 and reduce its overall fleet of 260,000 trucks by 15 percent by fiscal 2017.

Boeing.Says.It.Is.On.Track.For.787.De-velopmentThe AP reports Boeing “posted a bigger-than-expected profit recently and said it is on track to deliver the much-delayed 787 in the third quarter,” claiming that “95 percent of the flight tests” for the plane are now complete. Boeing CEO Jim McNerney said the challenge now would be ramping up production, a sentiment echoed by some analysts.

Meanwhile, the company “also said it still expects to deliver the freighter version of its new 747-8 in mid-2011.” Furthermore, during the earnings report, McNerney “said that the hole that tore open on a Southwest Airlines flight of a Boeing 737 might have resulted from a ‘workmanship issue’ on that single plane, rather than a problem affecting multiple 737s.”

The Wall Street Journal notes McNerney never mentioned when the 787 program would be profitable.

But McNerney did say that Bowing would not have a “sharper view” on whether there would be a successor plane for the 737 before the end of the year.

DoD.Pushes.‘Targeted’.R&D.Funding

The Pentagon must continue to invest in unmanned aircraft, cyber tools and long-range strike forces despite a projected decline in de-fense spending over the next decade, according to the U.S. Defense Department’s No. 2 official.

Deputy Defense Secretary William Lynn stressed the need for “tar-geted research and development” during this time frame, and likened it to the Pentagon’s investment in stealth technology in the 1970s, a time when defense spending sharply fell.

For nearly three decades, the United States has been the only military in the world to operate these types of aircraft, which have reduced vulnerability to radar detection.

With the White House calling for a $400 billion cut in national se-curity spending over the next 12 years, the Pentagon must continue to invest in these emerging technology areas, according to Lynn.

“Each of these technology areas will be crucial to future conflicts,” he said. “We do not yet know the exact shape they will take, or the precise advantages they will confer,” Lynn said. “But unless we shield the research and development funds that support them, we will deny future decision-makers the opportunity to deploy these technolo-gies, and deny the nation the security gains that accrue as a result.”

The Pentagon’s 2012 budget proposal calls for a new Air Force bomber, which DoD sees as the centerpiece of the long-range strike mission.

Unmanned aircraft have been key players in both Iraq and Afghani-stan for both reconnaissance and strike. The Pentagon and industry are currently working on several projects to build stealthy drones.Cyber also will play a role in potential future conflicts, according to Lynn.

US.Army.Awards.Armored.Vehicles.Contract.to.Textron

Textron Marine & Land Systems has been awarded a contract by the US Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM) for 88 M1117 armored security vehicles (ASV) and M1200 armored knight vehicles.

The $64.3m firm-fixed-price award exercises options for 37 M1117 ASVs, 51 M1200 Armored Knights and associated support equipment.

The ASV is a 4×4 wheeled armored vehicle that offers protection against small arms fire, artillery projectile fragments, improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and land mines. The vehicles are capable of performing scout, infantry personnel carrier, reconnaissance, command and control and maintenance missions.

IRobot.Paving.Way.For.Other.Robotics.Companies

The Los Angeles Times reports on the success of IRobot, which al-though most famous for its Roomba robotic vacuum cleaner makes a wide array of robots that “detect bombs, perform surgery and even go into battle.” The company is, according to the Times, “the only public company that focuses purely on robotics” and is paving the way for other robotics companies by proving to the public and investors that such companies are feasible.

“No one has ever made money with robots before,” said CEO Colin Angle. “But ours create more value than they cost to build.”

The Times chronicles the company’s history since its founding in 1990, which included a period of near-bankruptcy in 2002 before sales of the Roomba picked up. The company’s current project is Ava, a healthcare-focused robot that would be able to find and follow patients, among other features.

Firearm.Sales.On.The.Rise

The Wall Street Journal reports gun sales in the US increased nearly 13 percent in the first quarter of 2011, showing the gun industry’s largest year-over-year growth of the past three years. If the trend continues, the industry will see its most intense increase since 2008, according to the Federally tracked data.

Federal background checks, such as NICS, the National Instant Crimi-nal Background Check System, which is managed by the FBI, are tallied to track the data. NICS figures report a 15 percent increase in firearm sales in March 2011.

Precision Machined Products is a climate controlled precision ma-chine shop based in Fort Collins, CO. It occupies a 20,000 square foot facility and employs 34 people, operating 2 shifts daily. While the company manufactures products for a variety of commercial customers, it is renowned for its manufacturing capabilities in the satellite industry. Its satellite customers span the United States, and include both the Tier 1 manufacturers as well as their suppliers.

Precision Machined Products is part of a much larger entity called Mistequay Group which is headquartered in Saginaw, Michigan. The company, which maintains “Cold War Veteran Status”, was named after a creek just south of Saginaw, and with the foresight that a company name shouldn’t be limited by its current capabilities.

Mistequay’s divisions include:

• Corporate headquarters in Saginaw, Michigan• Mistequay Group, Ltd. Niagara Street Plant in Saginaw, Michigan• Mistequay Group, Ltd., Bay Road Plant in Saginaw, Michigan• Mistequay Group, Ltd., Standish Plant, located in Standish, Michigan• Precision Machined Products, Colorado Division in Fort Collins, CO and Wyoming Division, in Cody, Wyoming

• Precision Machined Products, Vacuum Technologies, located in Fort Collins, Colorado, formerly called Alpha Engineering and Design

• Universal / Devlieg LLC, in Saginaw, Michigan• Aero Precision Products, in Summerville, South Carolina• 2 International divisions

Mistequay Group, Ltd. was founded in 1991 when 3 partners, Jim Paas, Jake Shinners, and Bob Zastrow, acquired the assets of a bankrupt machine shop that specialized in automotive parts. The partnership was comprised of a Journeyman machinist, a lawyer and an accountant. Since the company was founded, it has grown from a 20 employee organization to over 200 employees, with a combined 225,000 square foot across all facilities. Much of the growth occurred through strategic mergers and acquisitions.

Five years ago, Bob Zastrow retired from the organization and Andy Newcomb took on a partnership position and board role with Jake and Jim. Andy was originally hired by Mistequay’s Saginaw division as 2nd shift foreman back in 1996. His career progressed with the company over the years, and in 2003 he was offered the opportunity to manage newly acquired Precision Machined Products in Fort Collins. Mr. Newcomb now oversees the Wyoming and Colorado operations of Mistequay Group in addition to his partner and board of directors responsibilities.

Andy describes his partners as bold entrepreneurs, always on the look out for companies to acquire to increase Mistequay’s compe-tencies. Across the divisions, the company supports the aerospace, satellite, defense, heavy equipment, agriculture, automotive, hy-draulics, medical and other industries that require precision machin-ing expertise. Typical products manufactured include: Aerospace Actuation Systems, Fluid Controls Systems, Precision Ballscrews, Hydraulic Actuation Fuel Systems, Space Flight Products, Wind Systems, Pump Housings, Steering Knuckles, Hydraulic Pumps, Bearing Components, products used for Medical Research and Telecommunications/Satellite products.

When considering acquisitions, the management team at Miste-quay Group looks for distressed manufacturing businesses with turn-around potential. The company strategically retains separate locations for the divisions. The management team believes that once a company takes on the “big company feel”, employees are less likely to feel a part of the family, where employees are willing

to help one another. They want each division to continue to take pride in their end product as part of a small entity.

Today, Mistequay Group offers a wide range of capabilities in high precision machining and programming, including CNC Mill-ing, CNC Turning, 5-Axis Machining, CNC Grinding, Broaching, EDM and Splining. They additionally manufacture fixtures, tools, prototype dies and assemblies. They specialize in highly processed parts requiring multiple machining and processing operations that involve exotic to conventional materials, castings and numerous outside services, such as specialized heat treating and numerous plating operations.

They even have a clean room used for washing parts at Precision Machined Products. The process, while not required, has increased the integrity of the end product. In fact, their plating rejections went to zero after the clean room was added. The company also has a Class 1000 clean room in their Cody, Wyoming facility to service their medical customers.

Across the Mistequay group, you will find in common ISO9001:AS9100 certifications. The company certified to this rig-orous standard more than a decade ago, long before their customers were pushing their suppliers to certify. The company also achieved NADCAP certification to Non-Destructive testing and they have achieved “certified supplier status” for a number of their customers. In fact, their relationship with their customers is so strong that they have a number of long-term agreements and dock to stock status.

As General Manager for the Colorado and Wyoming facilities, Andy says that his philosophy is to procure the latest in technology, whether it is in machinery or software. “In the past we purchased some entry level machines, but we have long outgrown this. Today, we purchase superior Mazak machines from Action Machinery. We feel these are the best machines for our multi-task machining requirements.”

“With the Mazaks, we can build to order, rather than carrying the huge burden of inventory. Without the quick set up capabilities we derive from the Mazaks, if a customer needed 20 parts, in 5 part lots, we might have had to build all 20, and then inventory 15. With

rapid set-up, we can build to the customer’s requirement of 5 at a time. This is a huge savings for our company, and we still achieve our customer’s delivery schedules.” The company’s latest Mazak purchases include the Nexus 510C - II 5X and the Variaxis 630-5X II.

The company admits that there are both lower priced and higher priced machines than the Mazaks. But, they feel the Mazak is absolutely the best value out there, with the lowest total cost of ownership. “When you purchase a Mazak machine from Action Machinery, you get not only the expertise and technical support that Action Machinery offers, but you additionally get the entire Mazak company for support. Their applications support is outstand-ing.” Mistequay Group purchased their first Mazak in 1992, and the Precision Machined Products Division’s first new Mazak was acquired through Action Machine 5 years ago.

Action Machinery offers both metal fabricating equipment and machine tools. Action Machinery, with showrooms in Colorado and Utah, is comprised of an experienced sales and service team that takes the time to learn about their customers’ needs. They are committed to strengthening American manufacturing and support the local manufacturing community though involvement as a board member of the Rocky Mountain Tooling and Machining Association (RMTMA).

Mazak Corporation is the world’s largest machine tool builder and is privately owned by the Yamazaki family. The company builds its world-class products in nine plants throughout the world. Com-mitted to manufacturing in the markets they serve, Mazak builds machines for the US market at it’s 600,000 square foot facility in Florence, Kentucky.

Mazak. to.Host.Grand.Opening.Open.House.At.New.SW.Technology.Center

Mazak Corporation will host a Grand Opening celebration on June 14, 2011, followed by an OpenHouse event emphasizing technology for the energy sector, to inaugurate its new Southwest Technology Center in Houston, Texas. The Grand Opening ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place on June 14th. The Open House, scheduled for June 15th and 16th, will take place from 10:00am – 6:00pm CST each day.

The new Southwest Technology Center will mark Mazak’s third and largest expansion of its Southwest Technology Center, which was originally founded in 1978, then expanded in 1982.

Representing Mazak’s continuous investment in American manu-facturing and the Southwest region inparticular, the new Southwest Technology Center will offer support to manufacturers in all industries, with a special focus on those serving the energy sector. For these growing local area industries, Mazak, unlike any other machine tool builder, has continually expanded in the Southwest to meet theneeds of and partner with customers and provide the best possible turnkey manufacturing solutions.

“Even during the economic downturn, we continued to invest in our Regional Technology Centers and in our manufacturing facility in Florence, Kentucky,” said Brian Papke, president of Mazak. “For the Kentucky plant, we have invested $13 million in expanding the facility’s capabilities through additional floor space and technology upgrades. Similar investment will continue into 2011, with the installation of another VERSATECH V-140N 5-axis double-column machining center for large part production, along with a Mazak Optonics cell with three laser fabrication centers in 2011 to improve productivity of sheet metal parts.”

The new 30,000 sq. ft. Southwest Technology Center has been designed with customer needs in mind. There’s more room for customer training and technology seminars, as well as for cutting demonstrations of larger model Mazak machines geared to the area’s specific manufacturing requirements. The new facility will have ample space for service and applications support for these larger machines and for a wide range of larger INTEGREX Multi-Tasking machines.

With increased complexity of customer parts and corresponding sophistication of machines, the importance of training and support will be enhanced with the new facility in the area. It will continue to serve as a regional service hub with 20 field service engineers based out of the facility, along with 5 phone support engineers, several of whom are bilingual to meet the diverse language needs of the region.

The Open House will show visitors actual part cutting solutions on machine models that provide turning and milling and Y-axis capabilities.

To register for the Open House being held June 15-16, 2011, please visit http://www.MazakUSA.com/GrandOpening.

iRobot. to. Supply.US.With. Small.Un-manned.Robots

iRobot Corporation will supply the US Army with 50 of its 310 SUGV (small unmanned ground vehicle) tactical mobile robots and spare parts.

The 35lb 310 SUGV robotic system is used on the battlefield mainly by explosive ordnance disposal teams and is suitable for dismounted mobile operations where it is used to keep soldiers out of critical situations.

The robots to be received under the current contract will also be used by combat engineers and marines to enhance situational awareness in dangerous situations.

iRobot’s government and industrial robots division president, Robert Moses, said that the 310 SUGV robot has proven its worth as a man-portable, rugged and easy-to-use robot.

“As a result of ongoing positive user feedback and its success on the battlefield, 310 SUGV will now be used to perform an even wider variety of missions,” he added.

The $7.6m contract has been awarded by the US Army Contracting Command-Warren, Michigan, US, under a new indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contract.

United.Technologies.Rises.Most.Since.May.as.Sales.Climb.for.Pratt,.Carrier

United Technologies Corp. rose the most in 11 months after saying 2011 sales will be at the high end of its forecast, buoyed by rising demand for Carrier air conditioners and refrigeration and Pratt & Whitney engine parts.

Annual revenue may be $57 billion, up from a previous forecast of at least $56 billion as pent-up demand stokes growth in existing divisions, the company said. Chief Executive Officer Louis Chen-evert raised the full-year profit forecast by a nickel to as much as $5.40 a share.

Orders rose across divisions as Pratt & Whitney logged more place-ments for its new geared turbofan jet engine and Carrier benefited from U.S. residential cooling and refrigeration demand. Profit was helped by 1 cent a share from currency translation into U.S. dollars and hedges in Canada. United Technologies gets more than half its sales from overseas, with about one-quarter from Europe.

“We had anticipated that the first quarter could be particularly strong, but it was even more impressive than we had expected, driven by the acceleration of organic growth to 9 percent,” Joseph Nadol, a JPMorgan Chase & Co. analyst in New York, said in a note to clients. The company “overcame the cost pressure that is a concern across the industrial space.”

A2Z METALWORKER • 34 • May/June 2011

Mike Kresser crossed off 2 items on his bucket list this past year.

The first was to get married, which he did to Betty after a 10-year courtship, and with his new wife came grandchildren, Gavin (10 years old), Tevin (9 years) , Aspen (5 years old) and Hyde, who is just 1 now.

The second was to open his own business, which he also accom-plished. The machine shop is called JH Precision Custom Machine Work. It is so named in the memory of Mike’s grandfather, Jess Harmon Parry. Though Jess passed away years ago, he was such an inspiration and mentor to Mike.

Jess was a true entrepreneur, and one of his first and very successful businesses was called Airline Foods. It supplied airlines in Salt Lake City with hot meals. Years after growing the company, Marriott Corporation purchased the business. Mike says, “Not only did my grandfather provide some financial assistance to my business en-deavors, but he taught me the value in saving and achieving financial stability. Jess was so much of a role model to me that it just seemed right to name the business after him.”

Mike is a journeyman machinist, trained at Utah Technical College,

and with more than 30 years of experience working for machine shops throughout the Salt Lake City area.

One of the more exciting companies Mike worked for was Daleboot USA, and Mike says it is the last US manufacturer of ski boots still in business. At Daleboot, Mike learned how to make plastic injec-tion molds, and was instrumental in upgrading the design of the products Daleboot sold.

At Daleboot, Mike first experienced his first taste of entrepreneur-ship. Owner Mel rented machine time when he needed machining done. Mike calculated that a machine purchase would have a pay back of less than a year, and he purchased his first machine, a Sharp vertical milling machine. He brought the machine into Daleboot’s facility, and was paid both wages and machine time rental. “The machine paid for itself in 6 months”, Mike said.

Mike purchased the Sharp milling machine from a high school col-league, Clark Smith. Aside from his relationship with Clark that dated back to their teen years, Mike says that everyone engaged in machin-ing in Utah knows of the excellent reputation of Smith Machinery.

Mike says, “Smith Machinery has been selling machines for more than

A2Z METALWORKER • 35 • May/June 2011

He bought all three new machines from Smith Machinery. “I don’t buy used cars or used machines”, Mike elaborated.

So how has business ownership gone for Mike at JHP? Mike says, “It took so much more time and effort to open the shop than I ever imagined. I have a new respect for entrepreneurs who started their own companies. Now that we’re open for busi-ness, I am enjoying it more and more.”

Mike’s first customer came from a refer-ral from Clark Smith, Mike said. Since then, the customer base is rapidly growing.

“People knew of my machining skills from my previous employment”, Mike said, “so

this gave us an in. Since then, they have seen that we offer quick turnaround, high quality, and a good value to our customers. We make the parts as if we were making the part for my grandsons’ race go-karts!” Today, the Kart racing industry comprises just a small part of JHP’s business.

What’s next? Continue to serve customers -- not to grow too large – so that JH Precision always offers its customers the boutique qual-ity, service and support. To cross some more items off his bucket list! And to continue to enjoy go cart racing – himself, and as a spectator for his grand kids. I can’t wait to see his granddaughter Aspen on her debut!

For more information on JH Precision, a small machine shop dedi-cated to customer service, call Mike Kresser at (801) 280-6063.

50 years now, and they have years of knowl-edge in manufacturing technologies and appli-cations. Their products include such a range of the world’s leading machine tool builders.”

He continued, “Their service is outstanding, and it includes install-ing, integrating, ser-vicing and training on advanced manufactur-ing technologies. Their sales engineers are Certified Machine Tool Sales Engineers (and journeymen machinists), and Smith Machinery is probably one of very few machine tool dealers in the whole United States who went through the process of certifying to ISO 9001:2008.”

Mike likens his machine tool preferences to his car buying prefer-ences. “I like higher end cars - they perform better than entry level, and the same applies to machine tools. The Mazak machines that I purchased recently from Smith Machinery are the best value out there. They aren’t the cheapest and they aren’t the most expensive, but they are, over the machine’s lifetime, the winner amongst other machines, with lower total cost of ownership.”

He continued, “I have run several top of the line machines over the course of my employment at several machine shops. The Mazak is robust, and it fits what I wanted to do in my shop as well as how much money I wanted to spend. My Mazaks should last 20 years.”

JH Precision opened less than a year ago, with Mike’s intention to focus the business on his family’s hobby and passion, that of go cart racing. “ I just knew I could make accessories for go cart racers that would make their racing experience more positive. I knew it from my experience, as I am racing now, as well as from the market research I conduct with grandsons Gavin and Tevin, who are also racers.”

JH Precision didn’t open with a single entry level machine, as many start-ups have. Instead, Mike purchased 2 Mazaks, a Nexus 510C II vertical machine center with a 48 tool magazine, and a QTN 100M CNC lathe with live tooling. The NEXUS Vertical Machining Centers are built with more productivity-enhancing features than any other verticals in their class. This makes them an incredible value for shops large and small. Packed with 48 tools, a variety of workpieces can be machined without changing the tool setup. The Mazatrol Matrix CNC control features the simplest, smartest conversational pro-gramming complete with monitoring and diagnostics.

Mike also purchased a Marvel automatic saw with 10” capacity that can cut within .010 of an inch over 100 parts.

U.S..should.relax.defense.export.rules.-.Northrop

The United States could boost its defense exports by easing restrictions on information about the technology used on its military hardware, the chief executive of U.S. defense contractor Northrop Grumman said. The United States operates under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) administered by the country’s State Department. The rules control exports of defense products and often restrain the export of sensitive technology and data such as those used on un-

manned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to other markets such as the Middle East.“The U.S. has been very focused on protecting its technological edge but that has probably done damage to its defense industrial base,” Northrop CEO Wes Bush said.

“These policies intended to keep this technology for the U.S. but en-couraged other nations to develop their own technologies, meaning the U.S. lost valuable export opportunities.”

As well as boosting exports, easing restrictions on all but the most sensitive programs would help the United States improve relationships with allies and allow it to forge new partnerships, he said.

“The U.S. would protect everything regardless of what it was but that needs to be relaxed -- we need higher walls around fewer things,” said Bush. “More technology sharing will broaden the market for defense products and will lead to more robust partnerships.”

Defense companies around the world have been hit by a slowdown in defense spending by Western governments in recent months.

Bush urged the British and U.S. governments to work more closely with industry to find ways to speed up the procurement process while also cutting costs.

“Economic and budgetary pressures are as dire as we have seen them, so we must do something about the affordability and timing of so many important defense and security programs,” Bush said.

A.New.Role.for.Honeywell’s.T-Hawk

Crews trying to control Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in Japan are using a tool seen by only a few people outside the military: an 18-inch flying machine that can zip around at 50 miles an hour, stop quickly, and hover while taking videos and radioactivity readings.

The T-Hawk, as it’s called, belongs to a class of unmanned planes called “micro air vehicles” that have been used for a few years by U.S. military forces in Iraq and Afghanistan for surveillance. Honeywell International Inc., the maker of the T-Hawk, has supplied four of the funnel-shaped drones to help Tokyo Electric Power Co., the plant’s operator. The T-Hawk earlier this month gathered video and radia-tion data at the Fukushima plant, which was damaged by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

Since Japan’s earthquake, Tepco and recovery crews have relied on much larger, better-known drones such as Global Hawks to circle the area and provide detailed videos of the damage.

The T-Hawk, originally built for the Pentagon’s advanced research agency, uses a two-cylinder, two-stroke engine and typically operates between 100 and 200 feet off the ground.

Under development since 2003, the device uses a fan to take off vertically and allow it to hover like a helicopter. Weighing in at just under 20 pounds, the drone can travel at 50 miles an hour and climb to an altitude of almost 10,000 feet. Pods attached to one side of the device’s main body contain flight-control systems, while cam-eras and sensors can be hung on the other side. A kickstand keeps it stable on the ground.

From a ground control station, operators on portable computers use a stylus and a soft-pad screen to direct the air vehicle using GPS satellite coordinates. An internal measurement unit helps keep track of position and speed.

The U.S. Army and Navy have flown the squat, cylindrical vehicles—which emit a loud whine similar to a lawn mower when they fly—on some 1,500 combat missions, including searches for improvised explosives. About 100 of the units are deployed with troops.

The T-Hawk can descend just above a specific location and hover, giving its sensors the opportunity to “stare” at the spot for extended periods. The fuel tank is big enough for only about 45 minutes of flying time, but Mr. Witwer said the T-Hawk’s maneuverability, encrypted communications and digital navigation systems “give it a lot of potential power.”

T-Hawks and their human partners faced unique technical and envi-ronmental challenges in Japan. The challenges included operating the vehicles from a portable, radiation-protected container large enough for several people—and transported on a flatbed truck. The crews also had to wear full-body radiation protective gear, layers of heavy gloves and personal respirators.

‘Flying Robot’ pilot helps find IEDs in Helmand

Lance Corporal Rob McInerney is currently working at the forefront of counter-IED operations in Afghanistan piloting the

‘Flying Robot’, which is part of the Talisman counter-IED system.

Talisman has been designed to provide an increased level of assurance along routes throughout the region. It consists of a suite of cutting-edge equipment, including armoured vehicles, optical cameras and remote-controlled vehicles.

This life-saving equipment is being used to support combat logistic patrols, which can comprise several hundred vehicles and trek through the country delivering vital supplies to bases for the troops on the front line.

Lance Corporal Rob McInerney, aged 26, serves with 15 Field Support Squadron, part of 21 Engineer Regiment - the first troops to use the new system on the ground in Afghanistan. See Related News.

His role is to pilot the MAV (Micro Air Vehicle), otherwise known as the ‘Flying Robot’ or ‘T-Hawk’:

“The MAV is a great piece of kit and complements the rest of the equipment,” he said. “The MAV has two cameras which feed information back to a laptop so that the commander is then better placed to make decisions.

“We have been involved in a few contacts on a couple of the operations that we have been on, which made the day interesting! The most satisfying part of the tour for me is when we get the guys to their destination safely; after all, that is the aim of our job!”

Lance Corporal McInerney has been with 15 Field Support Squadron, based in Ripon, North Yorkshire, since they re-roled from a Field Support Squadron in which he was a plant operator:

“It has been good to learn something new but I am looking forward to getting back to plant,” he said.

He is also looking forward to getting back to the UK to see his fiancée, Laura, and his daughter, Anna, who is only five months old:

“She was born two weeks before I came out here so it will be amazing to see the difference in her now,” he added.

Lance Corporal McInerney has two other brothers serving in the Army. One is serving with the Royal Signals and the other is due to deploy on operations quite soon. He said:

“My brother Dave, who is in 9 Para[chute] Squadron, Royal Engineers, is due to deploy to Afghanistan on the next tour and I wish him good luck.”

The Washington Times reports a “survey by Change the Equation, a coalition of educators and CEOs of companies that includes Time Warner, Xerox and ExxonMobil, found that while students in many schools meet the benchmarks set by their states, those thresholds fall far below national levels set by the US Department of Education’s National As-sessment of Education Program (NAEP).”

Retired Intel CEO Craig Barrett said that despite talk about improving US science and math education over the past fifty years, “not a damn thing has happened.”

Change the Equation CEO Linda Rosen “said the report was intended to “correct the record” on science, technology, en-gineering and mathematics proficiency among the nation’s youth.”

Lockheed Martin plans to select the supplier of an alternate helmet-mounted display (HMD) for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter by the end of this quarter.

Development issues with the primary Vision Systems International (VSI) visor-projected helmet-mounted display have led to the decision to pursue an alternate HMD to provide a night-vision capability.

The F-35 does not have a head-up display (HUD), and an HMD capable of day and night operation is a critical requirement.

ity, we will have two paths for the HMD,” says Eric Branyan, F-35 deputy program manager, adding that the alternate helmet will use off-the-shelf Anvis-9 night vision goggles and provide both virtual-HUD and targeting information.

In parallel, work will continue on resolving display resolution issues with VSI’s Gen 2 HMD, which uses less-mature electron-bombarded active pixel sensor (Ebaps) technology. VSI says it is looking at more advanced versions of the Ebaps night-vision camera.

A request for proposals was issued in mid-

March. “We will select a supplier late in the second quarter and begin to go down the path to develop the alternate helmet,” Branyan says. “We will continue down that path as far as we have to. It’s smart program management.”

“They are looking for an interim solution,” says Paul Cooke, defense avionics business development manager for BAE Systems, which is proposing a version of its visor-projected HMD in production for the Eu-rofighter Typhoon.

BAE was developing an HMD for the F-35 up to around 2005, when VSI was selected.

Ken Jensen and Dan Perkins credit the suc-cess of their business to a world-renowned physician, Dr Marlowe Goble. Throughout Dr. Marlowe Goble’s brilliant career he has continuously improved the field of sports medicine and orthopedic care. Dr. Goble spent the last 30 years breaking new ground in the field of knee surgery and has gained a reputation as a top surgeon in orthopedics.

Dr. Goble moved to breathtaking Logan, Utah, many years ago. As he was busy re-searching, prototyping, and then bringing medical products to market, he purchased a precision CNC machine shop and a precision Swiss CNC shop. The machine shop was acquired to support Dr. Goble’s R&D efforts, and the Swiss CNC shop was bought for the purpose of manufac-turing production parts. Dr. Goble aptly named the manufacturing entity “Medi-cine Lodge”. Other companies founded by Marlowe include a facet arthroplasty device company, Facet Solutions; Western Surgery Center; and Frontier Biomedical. Dr. Goble’s most recent research company, Venture M.D., currently develops and funds orthopedic research ideas.

Ken and Dan both were very involved in running the machine shop divisions of Medicine Lodge, even after it changed hands and names over time. If you are familiar with manufacturing entities in this part of the United States, you most

likely know of some of the names that Medicine Lodge took on, including Mitek, Innovasive Devices, and even Johnson & Johnson. Large Fortune 100 companies were interested in the company, as they saw tremendous value in the medical patents that came out of Medicine Lodge.

But that’s not what this article is about, though Ken and Dan believe that Dr. Goble’s strong desire to expand manufacturing in Logan, Utah, resulted in dozens of start-up machine shops that are now excelling in Logan, Utah, a remote community approximately 100 miles from Salt Lake City. Pinnacle Precision is one of them. “We had such a fascinating experi-ence working under Dr. Goble”, Ken said,

“and we even had several opportunities to be in the operating room during Dr. Goble’s surgeries so that we see first hand how to make better products. Not many machine shop owners had the privilege to help design critical medical products like we have.”

Pinnacle Precision, founded seven and a half years ago by Dan Perkins and Ken Jensen, is a Veteran-owned business. Dan and Ken were ideal partners, both skilled machinists, and both who had worked well with each other at a number of businesses over the years. Dan describes Ken as a “math wizard”, so talented that he could take on any new technical challenge, and Ken describes Dan as the partner who works exceptionally well with our customers”.

The company is well known for its expertise in small machine parts, ranging from ¾ inch to

.010 inch in size. The two brainstormed their company name for what they wanted their company to represent, the pinnacle, or height of precision machining. And with each of the founders having worked in the machining industry for 25 plus years, mak-ing parts for the aerospace, medical, de-fense and artillery industries, the company can make some of the most complex small parts. Pinnacle Precision also prides itself on its ability to make parts out of some of the more difficult to machine metals as Titanium, Stainless, Inconel, Incoloy, and Nickel. Their customers reside throughout the United States, and even into Canada.

The company continues to invest in some of the most sophisticated equipment, in-cluding the 3 Star CNC Swiss machines they purchased in the past year and a half. Their latest, the Star SR20J, incorporates a main spindle, sub spindle, and live tool-ing for milling drilling. Both high-pressure coolant spindles have full contouring axes for 4th axis work.

The Star CNC Swiss machines are multi-axis machine tools equipped with live tool-ing and sub-spindles. Parts are completed in one cycle without secondary operations. With computer aided programming and the ease of set-ups, lead times are drasti-cally reduced. Ken says, “the lead time to procure raw material is usually our bottle-

neck.” He continued, “Gone is the para-digm that large batch sizes are needed to be economical. In fact for a large number of part configurations, our Swiss machines are the choice machines for medium to low volume part manufacturing.”

Pinnacle Precision also owns a wire EDM machine, and some of the most sophis-ticated inspection equipment available.

“Our Brown and Sharp Tesa Scan can test product accuracy to within 40 millionths”, Dan said, “which is the equivalent of the width of a piece of paper sliced 75 times.” And you will be hard-pressed to find the Oasis (Optical Automatic Smart Inspection System) in many machine shops.

With years of experience at very large manufacturing facilities, including Parker Hannifin, Williams International, and Medicine Lodge, making very high toler-ance, precision parts, ISO certification was something that Ken and Dan knew that they would have to take on. “We put all of the processes in place from the time we opened the business”, Dan said, “and so when we had sufficient funds last year to go through the Certification accredita-tion, it literally only took us 1 month to complete.” Both Dan and Ken believe that the ISO certification facilitates productiv-ity improvements and results in a more efficient and well run operation.

“The scores count”, Dan said. “Our typical scores for quality and on-time delivery are 97% or better.” The company takes pride in their philosophy of “parts aren’t done until they are cleaned and de-burred”. The company invested in an ultrasonic vapor degreaser, and all de-burring stations are equipped with microscopes for 100% inspection.

Pinnacle Precision customers share some of their experiences with the Pinnacle Precision team. Here is what they have to say.

“We’ve been using Pinnacle Precision as a supplier for more than 5 years now. They machine components for our end products, which are medical devices.

Pinnacle Precision produces good product consistently. Their pricing is

outstanding, and they are extremely responsive.

Occasionally, we have an issue to resolve, caused when the print call-out is unclear or we change our method of inspection. On these rare instances, the team at Pinnacle Precision is extremely responsive. They also work with us when we need an expedite.

We single source specific components to Pinnacle Precision. When you find a supplier that is work-ing for you, you just don’t change out!”Jeremy, Medical Products Manufacturer

“Pinnacle Precision has captured the majority of our screw machine business over the past several years. Their quality and their support is out-standing, and their pricing is very competitive.

It is a pleasure doing business with Pinnacle Precision. I would highly recommend Pinnacle Precision to anyone!”

Mike, Precision Manufacturer

“We have been purchasing machined parts from Pinnacle Precision for the past ten years. They are considered one of our most reliable sources for machined parts under 3/4” in diameter. I can ask Dan or Ken for a quote today and find a response in my inbox by morning. This is ex-tremely valuable in today’s competitive environ-ment. They are very strong when working with

“hard to machine” exotic alloys (nickel, cobalt etc.).

Pinnacle is on time with delivery, and always supplies all required Quality Control Docu-mentation.”

Job. Picture. Improving. For. Recent.Graduates

USA Today reports, “Employers plan to hire 19.3% more recent graduates this year, says a report by the National Association of Col-leges and Employers.”

This marks a significantly better employment environment than gradu-ates have seen the past few years. “The top-paying major for the class of 2011 is chemical engineering,” while accounting majors will see the greatest number of overall opportunities.

The article details the differences in employment demand in different areas of the country, noting, for example, that “the Midwest is seeing an increase in manufacturing, information technology and sales open-ings.” Experts said that while openings are more plentiful than they were this time last year, students would be well advised to continue searching as early as possible.

PwC.forecasts.flat.defense.sales

U.S. defense industry revenues in 2011 are expected to be consistent with that of 2010 despite government spending restraints worldwide.PricewaterhouseCoopers, in its latest defense and aerospace review and forecast, said that despite budget constraints and program ter-minations, the defense sector reported another strong year in 2010.

Industry backlogs in the defense segment have been resilient despite many program terminations, showing only modest erosion.

Revenues are expected to be fairly consistent with last year but prof-its are anticipated to be modestly higher as companies benefit from productivity improvement initiatives, deferred spending and lower pension costs.

The report said the U.S. defense industry also experienced robust merger and acquisition activity in 2010, with about $20 billion worth of deals, representing a 50 percent increase over the $10 billion reported in 2009.

The trend in merger and acquisition activity is likely to accelerate in 2011.

“Though the short-term outlook is relatively stable, it’s nearly impos-sible to predict the overall health of the defense industry beyond a few years down the road,” said Scott Thompson, U.S. aerospace and defense leader at PwC.

“Challenges and uncertainty related to the U.S. military’s role in world affairs, recent instability in the Middle East, a tightening Pentagon budget and the continuing threat of terrorism are just a few factors that will influence the long-term picture.Despite all these unknowns, we expect in 2011 and subsequent years that defense contractors will face the reality of flat to declining spending.”

U.S..gears.for.high-stakes.missile.defense.test

The United States is preparing for its first test of a sea-based defense against longer-range missiles of a type that officials say could soon threaten Europe from Iran.

Much is riding on the event, including confidence in the Obama administration’s tight timeline for defending European allies and deployed U.S. forces against the perceived Iranian threat.

The last two intercept tests of a separate U.S. ground-based missile defense, aimed at protecting U.S. soil, have failed.

The planned sea-based test this month will pit Lockheed Martin Co’s Aegis shipboard combat system and a Raytheon Co missile interceptor against their first intermediate-range ballistic missile target, said Richard Lehner, a spokesman for the Pentagon’s Missile Defense Agency.

Previous such sea-based drills have been against shorter-range targets. Intermediate range is defined as 3,000 to 5,500 kilometers (2,000-3,500 miles) -- a distance that would put London, Paris and Berlin within range of Iran’s westernmost soil.

The coming test, dubbed FTM-15, is “to demonstrate a capability against a class of ballistic missiles, and is not country-specific,” Lehner said in an emailed reply to queries from Reuters.

The layered, multibillion-dollar U.S. anti-missile effort also focuses on North Korea’s growing arsenal of missiles, which, like Iran’s, could perhaps be tipped with chemical, biological or nuclear warheads.

The “window” for the Aegis shootdown attempt runs to April 30, Lehner said. He said the Aegis-

equipped ship used in the test will be in the south central Pacific and the ballistic missile target will be launched from Kwajalein Atoll, part of the Marshall Islands in the central Pacific.

“During FTM-15, Aegis BMD (ballistic mis-sile defense) will demonstrate for the first time its capability to negate the longer-range threats that must be countered in Phase 1” of the U.S.-planned bulwark for Europe, J. Michael Gilmore, the Pentagon’s top weap-ons tester, said in congressional testimony last month.

The United States expects to meet its goal of putting an initial missile defense capabil-ity in Europe by the end of this year even though efforts to find a host nation for a powerful Raytheon-built radar station are still under way, Brad Roberts, a deputy assistant secretary of defense, said.

Obama in 2009 scrapped a George W. Bush-era plan to build a European ver-sion, in the Czech Republic and Poland, of the ground-based shield already de-ployed in California and Alaska. Instead, his Pentagon turned to the more flexible Aegis technology to better match its Iran expectations.

As part of the Pentagon’s plan, the United States is seeking a southeastern European country to host the Raytheon X-band radar that would hand off data to the Aegis ships

-- a concept dubbed “launch on remote.”

In the coming test, the interceptor missile will be cued by such an AN/TPY-2 radar unit, fed through a battle management center, just as is planned for Europe, Army Lieutenant General Patrick O’Reilly said.

“The USS Monterey is at sea today and, when paired with the AN/TPY-2 radar, will provide initial BMD protection of southern Europe from existing SRBM, MRBM and IRBM threats,” he said, ab-breviating for short-, medium- and inter-mediate-range ballistic missiles.

Greg Thielmann, a missile defense expert at the private Arms Control Association, discounted the likelihood of a near-term Iranian intermediate-range missile threat.

BAE,. KMW.Vie. For.Brazil.Armored.Ve-hicle.UpgradeBAE Systems and European armored vehicle rival Krauss-Maffei Wegmann are vying to upgrade the Brazilian Army’s M113 armored vehicle fleet.

Both companies brought upgraded ve-hicles to the Latin American Aerospace and Defense show here this week as the two sides stepped up the fight to upgrade about 150 vehicles with new engines, upgraded transmission, new electronic architecture, better armor protection and other improvements.

BAE executives here said the U.S. gov-ernment is in talks with their Brazilian counterparts to upgrade the vehicles to the current U.S. A2 Mk1 standard in a foreign military sales deal.

BAE said it would partner with the Brazilian Army’s own depot operation to undertake the upgrade if the deal is agreed.

For its part, KMW said it was part-nering with German M113 upgrade expert Flensburger Fahrzeugbau Gesellschaft (FFG) to try to secure the Brazilian work.

A company spokesman said the vehicle developments would be suited to the Brazilian market but would have the

“DNA of vehicles” in the KMW range. The new company would act as the continental hub for KMW’s efforts in the region, the spokesman said.

KMW is nearing completion of a deal to supply 270 surplus Leopard 1 main battle tanks to the Brazilian Army. The final vehicles will be delivered by the end of this year and the German vehicle builder hopes to secure a long-term support agreement for the tanks.

The partnership with FFG could lead to other co-operation projects in the Brazilian market, KMW said.

Armored vehicle upgrades for the

Brazilian market are potentially big business.

Erik Hjelm , BAE’s Americas vice president, said the company was looking at upgrading 26 AAV7’s and doubling the existing fleet with another 26 vehicles from the U.S., and upgrading them all to the latest military standard operated by the U.S.

Company executives also said they are exploring opportunities for the Swedish developed BVS10 tracked all-terrain vehicle in Brazil and Chile and offering mine- resistant vehicles supplied by its South African arm for duties at the upcoming World Cup and Olympic Games in Brazil.

Self-Employment. Becoming.An. In-creasingly.Popular.Alternative

The Washington Post reports, “National studies indicate that the ranks of the self-employed have increased during the economic downturn, suggesting that high unemployment rates have prompted many people to start off on their own.” According to one study, “the number of firms that launched with one person rose to 340 per 100,000 per month in 2010, compared with 300 per 100,000 per month in 2007.”

Robert W. Fairlie, an economics professor at UC Santa Cruz and the study’s author, explained, “With high unemployment rates, people are wanting some alternative to the labor market.”

Experts say this self-employment may be responsible for contrasting findings in different employment reports, as identifying them can be difficult.

Raytheon.bomb.ready.for.flight.testing

Raytheon Co.’s Small Diameter Bomb II is ready for captive flight testing after passing a U.S. Air Force critical design review.

The SDB II is an air-launched, precision-strike standoff weapon that can be used against moving and fixed targets in adverse weather conditions.

The weapon incorporates an improved seeker that features three modes of operation: millimeter-wave radar, uncooled imaging infrared and semi-active laser.

“Raytheon’s SDB II features a mature tri-mode seeker and a cutting-edge warhead, and completing the CDR proves our design is producible and mature,” said Harry Schulte, Raytheon Missile Systems vice president.

“Raytheon has an affordable and executable plan to deliver a robust engineering and manufacturing development program.”

Tom White, Raytheon’s SDB II program director, said that using an uncooled seeker and other approaches, improves weapon reliability and reduces production and life-cycle costs.

Ball.Aerospace. Begins.Cryogenic.Testing.of.Webb.Telescope.Flight.Mirrors

Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. has de-livered six of 18 James Webb Space Telescope mirror segments for cryogenic acceptance testing, to the Marshall Space Flight Center X-ray & Cryogenic Facility (XRCF), Hunts-ville, Ala.

The first full set of coated mirrors will be mounted to a fixture and undergo final cryo-genic protoflight testing inside Marshall’s XRCF chamber. Ball Aerospace engineers will initiate round-the-clock testing on April 15, which will continue for eight weeks. This is

the first of three acceptance tests for the flight mirror assemblies. Ball will test a second set of six mirror assemblies at Marshall in July, and a final set of six in the fall of 2011.

“The kickoff for the final cryogenic testing of the mirrors has been eight years in the mak-ing,” said Cary Ludtke, vice president and general manager for the Ball Aerospace Civil and Operational Space strategic business unit.

“This milestone speaks to the disciplined and painstaking approach successfully employed by the development team and partners.”

In addition to the primary mirror assemblies, Ball Aerospace will deliver the secondary flight mirror assembly in October. Protoflight testing of the tertiary and fine steering mirror assemblies will be complete in July, and the aft optics bench will also be fully assembled by October.

Ball Aerospace is the principal optical subcon-tractor for the JWST program, led by prime contractor Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems, under contract to NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Ball is responsible for developing the telescope optics, including the

18 beryllium mirror segment assemblies that comprise the primary mirror. Each of the 18 hexagonal-shaped mirror assemblies weighs approximately 40 kilograms( 88 pounds) after light-weighting.

Boeing.rolls.out.first.777.at.seven-a-month.rate

Boeing has completed the first 777 aircraft at the recently raised rate of seven per month, the company announced recently.

Boeing previously announced plans to boost 777 production from five to seven a month this year and then to 8.3 a month in the first quarter of 2013, and started building at seven per month in March.

The first 777 completed at the new rate is a freighter scheduled for delivery to FedEx Express in June, Boeing said. “This rate increase reflects the strong demand for the 777,” Larry Loftis, 777 vice president and general manager, said in a news release. “It continues to be the clear leader in the 300-400 passenger seat market.”

Boeing took in orders for 56 777 from Jan. 1 though May 10 and has a backlog of more than 280 of the aircraft.

With the rate increase, Boeing cut produc-tion flow from 52 to 49 days, removing days in wing spar, service-ready wing and final body join areas.

Boeing previously built seven 777s a month from July 1997 to February 1998, August 1998 to October 1999 and November 2006 to May 2010. The planned rate of 8.3 a month would be a new high.

OMAX®. Sponsors.Win-ning.Team. at. FIRST.Ro-botics.Championship

OMAX Corporation recently sponsored the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics team from Aviation High School in Des Moines, Washington. Following victory at the regional level, the team won the prestigious Creativity Award in the FIRST Championship held April 27-30, 2011, in St. Louis, Missouri.

Inventor Dean Kamen founded FIRST in

1989 to inspire young people’s interest and participation in science and technology. The not-for-profit organization’s FIRST Robot-ics Championship is an international event in which teams of high school students build a robot over a period of six weeks using the core principles of engineering and math-ematics. The final teams – 8,600 students from 11 countries – were selected from more than 42,000 contestants who already competed at regional-level competitions around the world.

This is the third year that OMAX has spon-sored Aviation High School’s FIRST Robot-ics team. Each Friday evening during the team’s build season, OMAX Lead Electrical Engineer Kevin Hay supervised the Aviation High School team as members cut parts for their robot at the OMAX headquarters. Us-ing the MAXIEM® 1530 and OMAX 2652 models, the team was able to cut the precise parts needed for its prize-winning robot.

“Working with the kids is a lot of fun, but it also fits OMAX’s goal of promoting science and engineering education,” said Kevin Hay. .”
