Ageing Well Programme •People are living longer.
•More people are going to be in need of care and support
• Challenges; many older people living with health problems, poverty, isolation, inequalities, diversity of needs/expectations. Pressures on care, housing, transport etc.
• Opportunities; life expectancy, better health, community assets – volunteers, strong networks/forums, carers.
• Are councils & partners prepared ?
About the Ageing Well programme
• Key objective – to support local authorities to prepare for an ageing society. To develop good places to grow older.
• Sector led programme 2010/11 to 2011/12, commissioned by DWP
• Intensive work with 6 top tier Councils per region• All of the programme is free at the point of delivery • Range of support tailored to councils’ needs;
including, peer review/challenge, leadership academy mentoring, scrutiny best practice and bespoke work.
We will work with councils to:
• Support local leadership adopt more strategic approaches for planning for ageing population
• Involve older people in discussions about priorities and opportunities
• Maximise efficiencies through joined-up / place-based approaches
• Develop local solutions to delivering “Good places to grow old in”
• Recognise the contribution that older people make• Promote strategic shift to prevention and early
intervention
Customer insight - Ageing well
• Older persons sounding board – regional representatives • Older people as peers delivering programme.• Self assessment workshop• Community Service Volunteers –Councils to develop
volunteering by older people and achieve better outcomes. Also share innovative and effective approaches to engaging older people through volunteering.
• Place based approach – whole system approach – including service users
• Community asset / building social capital workshops
