What a joy to see believers working together in unity for thepurpose of evangelism and community impact.                                                  ‐ Dr. David Leavell, FBC Millington

I love seeing ethnic diversity. The diversity and unity among thechurches filled my heart with joy.                                         ‐ Mondonico Williams, Pursuit Memphis

The greatest love came down on Hickory Hill on Saturday.                  ‐ Abraham Song, Germantown Korean Baptist Church

The Hickory Hill Festival was a tremendous showing of goodwilltoward the Hickory Hill Community. Churches worked together, and God was honored. I was able to give one 15‐year‐old youngman a ride home to a nearby neighborhood. He was like ripefruit after participating in the festival. I believe his 'sinner'sprayer' was genuine. It has to be worth it all when even a smallnumber of people are saved!                                   ‐ Dr. Ashley Ray, Ridgeway Baptist Church

Balmoral Baptist Church had a good group to participate in theFestival on April 25. We were thrilled to see many young peoplepray to receive Christ, and one of our own youth made aprofession of faith as a result.                                   ‐ John Yarbrough, Balmoral Baptist Church

It was a great way to share the gospel in a tangible way with theHickory Hill community. Now, I pray that the Lord of theHarvest would graciously water the seed that was sown!                                   ‐ Dan Morgan, Cherry Road Baptist Church

Focus Church ‐ Monument of Love

       by Stuart McCollough

"Rebirth, Rebrand and Rebuild" ‐ that is the theme themembers of Monument of Love Church are focusing on in2015. Situated in the Bethel Grove/Orange Moundcommunities of Memphis, the church is ready to step outand reach the lost and hopeless that surround theirfacilities. Senior Pastor Derrick Jones is excited aboutwhat the future holds as they seek to follow God's directionand leading.    Monument of Love Baptist Church was organized in 1984as Fitzgerald Community Baptist Church and was part ofthe National Baptist Convention. In 1988, the church choseto affiliate with the Southern Baptist Convention. Twoyears later the name was changed to Monument of LoveBaptist Church. Pastor Lawrence Hudson was the foundingpastor and served the church for 30 years before hisretirement last year. He still serves as Pastor Emeritus.

Around the time of the name change, Lamar Heights Baptist Church had voted to merge with Cherry Road BaptistChurch leaving their large facility on Lamar Ave. vacant. Church leaders wanted an African‐Americancongregation that would be committed to the community to use the building to continue to reach theneighborhood. After Monument of Love rented the facilities for several months, the Lamar Heights group decidedto let the church meet there for free and later signed the buildings over to the new congregation.    Senior Pastor Derrick Jones grew up in Memphis and attended Memphis State Campus School and White StationMiddle and High Schools. He graduated college from Embry‐Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, FL.He accepted the "Memphis Challenge" to return to Memphis and give back to the city where he grew up. Hebecame an Associate Pastor at Monument of Love in 1996 and served under Rev. Hudson's leadership for 18 yearsbefore becoming Senior Pastor in June, 2014. Bro. Derrick has a love for his congregation and a commitment tomissions, church growth and Bible study.    As a new Senior Pastor, Bro. Derick was excited for the opportunity for Monument of Love to become one ofthis year's focus churches. He is seeking to have a better understanding of the Association and a higher level ofpresence in the Association. He hopes that the process will bring focus to the church and provide practices andpolicies that will continue to grow the church and equip the saints.     The church is involved in several ministries and seeking to start several more. Every Thursday, in conjunctionwith the Memphis Food Bank, the church operates a Food Pantry that serves between four and 10 families a week.A clothes closet ministry also helps families in need in the community. A group of members visits a local nursinghome on the second Sunday of each month to minister and provide the Lord's Supper for the residents. For the pastthree years, the church has hosted the Bethel Grove Community Health Fair and Festival. This year's event isscheduled for July. Another new ministry is the Virtuous Beacon Association, a Women's Domestic Abuse Ministry. There are over 15,000 calls to the Memphis Police Department each year concerning domestic abuse. The churchhopes that by providing work training and job placement services for women at risk, that that number can bereduced.    Bro. Derrick wants people to know that Monument of Love Baptist Church is very friendly and memberspractice "radical hospitality." They are becoming more mission minded and are open to developing qualityrelationships with other congregations to work together for special events. They have a dynamic praise andworship ministry that consists of a blended‐syle of worship. His prayer is that they would transition to what Godwould have them to do for the next 30 years. Visit www.monumentoflove.org  for more information about thechurch.
