Our program speaker for September 11, 2012 will be Judy Sisneros. Judy has been teaching and

sharing her quilting techniques since 1993. She is an enthusiastic teacher who believes in

encouraging creativity and originality in her students. She loves to travel as well as to teach, and this

combination of interests and skills has taken her to some far-off places. We will hear about at least

one of them in her lecture, “Stitches of Hope,” in which Judy will tell us about teaching hand-quilting

in Cambodia to young girls who had been rescued from the sex-slave trade. This promises to be a

fascinating and inspiring lecture during which we will see some of Judy’s photos of that experience

as well as some of her newest and best quilts. We hope you will all join us for the lecture, and for

Judy’s workshop, “Batik Blast,” at Orange Quilt Bee on Saturday, September 15th.

Judy’s workshop is bound to be a BLAST! She describes it as WE LOVE BATIKS! This is a

workshop where you can either make it scrappy or choose your color scheme - and can arrange the

blocks in 2 different ways - your choice! The quilt uses rail fence blocks, stacked in pairs and sliced

diagonally. A flange is inserted as 2 different rails are sewn back together. Fun-Fast-Finished!

Beginner friendly............

Judy writes “My goal as a teacher is that each student go away happy, with a unique quilt - not a

copy of mine or any other quilt in the workshop.

My classes are mostly beginner friendly - and I want students to like the quilt well enough to make

more than one. As quilters, the most precious gifts we give (other than our time) are those we make

on our sewing machines. I want to help you make wonderful gifts for those you love!”

MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR THESE UPCOMING WORKSHOPS

Check the website (www.orangecountyquiltersguild.com ) for the latest information on

upcoming Programs & Workshops. Betsy Weisman has finished booking for workshops

well into 2014 the website will be updated soon so that you can put the workshops on your

calendar. Sign-up form for Workshops is available on the website or guild meetings. Come

join us for some fun! Workshop prices went up on June 1st, 2012, the new price is $35

member/$45 non-member. This is still an amazing deal when you consider how

much it costs to take workshops from these quilters at large venues!

Here are the next 3 scheduled workshops. All workshops are at the Orange Quilt Bee

located at 628 E Katella Ave in Orange, phone 714-639-3245.

Hello Wonderful Quilters!

I hope you are planning to join us in September for Judy Sisneros’ presentation! I am excited to be taking

her workshop as it is on a Saturday (and I don’t have vacation days left a work this year)! I need to pick out

my set of 2 ½” strips (I will go shopping in my stash!).

If you missed the August meeting, you missed a very educational and entertaining talk from Dalen and

Mitzi Keys. He talked about the process of writing children’s books and read some from his books and

Mitzi showed us her quilts to help illustrate the experience. It was fascinating and fun!

Thank you to Laura Lynch and Nancy Grant for setting up our display area at Yorba Linda Quilt Daze. I

stopped by and enjoyed their lovely display of quilts (including my beautiful President’s Quilt that I

received in February; I still admire it every day and am soooo greatful!)! It was a fun show all in all!

I need to apologize to Carolyn Erratt who so generously volunteered to be our Newsletter Editor along with

her Block Party duties (and everything else going on in her life including her daughter’s wedding in July).

She had the newsletter ready over a week ago except for my article and Sew & Tell. I have over-extended

myself once again and could not finish everything I wanted to add to the newsletter. I am trying to

improve in that area and only commit to what I can accomplish. I’ll put the Sew & Tell and a few other

things in next month’s newsletter so that this one can go out ASAP!

I am looking for a volunteer/volunteers to make (or head the committee to make) the 2014 Opportunity

Quilt for our guild. Let me know if you would like to volunteer (this is also a great friendship group

project)! Also, if anyone wants to head up the Christmas ornament exchange in December, please let me

know (really just a two-month commitment – announce/write newsletter article in November and

coordinate the exchange in December).

The Warm Company sent us a package of their products and the Board will be deciding how to distribute

(maybe door prizes). They are having a FaceBook Likes & Posts challenge. Our guild had the

opportunity to win one of 10 full bolts of Warm and Natural. Just “Like” the Warm Company on FaceBook

(http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/The-Warm-Company/261044530611534) and Post the name of our

guild (Orange County Quilters Guild) on their wall by September 31st! Guilds with the most participation

(percentage wise) will be in the running!

Thank you to all who are making our guild a wonderful place to be! Get involved in your guild and let’s

continue to have a great year!

Save Lids to Save Lives

Since 1997, Yoplait has donated more than $34 million to the cause through the Save Lids to

Save Lives program, Race for the Cure and other initiatives.

14 years ago, an employee at our Carson City, California, Yoplait plant lost a family member to

cancer and helped organize the plant’s support for a local cancer race. The goal of Save Lids to

Save Lives is to support the millions of people who have been impacted by breast cancer by raising

awareness and funding to fight the disease.

Breast cancer statistics continue to be staggering. One in eight women in the United States

will develop breast cancer in her lifetime, and for the United States in 2012, more than

250,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women (source: American

Cancer Society).

At savelidstosavelives, consumers can dedicate their lid collection to a loved one who inspired

them to make a difference and learn more ways to support the cause.

Find out how you can join General Mills in making a difference in the fight against breast cancer at

savelidstosavelives.

Orange County Quilt Guild Quilters' UFO Challenge 2012/2013

Name:___________________________________________

Phone No. _________________________

Email: ____________________________

Entry Fee: $10:00 R' cd on _________ by______

Important Information

This is a chance to turn 4 UFOs into quilts in only one year!

Decide which of your UFOs need to be quilts by September 2013. Pick 4.

Decide the order that you would like to complete your quilts.

Describe the finished quilts in the boxes on the next page. Make sure that NO.1 is the

one you want to work on first. NO.2 the quilt you finish second, NO.3 is the third quilt done and

NO.4 is last. Provide enough information to easily identify each quilt. For example, "green churn

dash" is a better description than "Bill's birthday quilt". Fill out both copies of the list, and keep one

for yourself, so you know what to work on next!

Finished means quilted, bound, and labeled.

After the first quilt, which will be due in December 2012 but may be turned in early, one

quilt will be due every three (3) months.

When you turn in your entry form, you'll be given a participant ribbon to wear this year. As you turn in each quilt, you'll be given a button to sew to the ribbon to show how many of

your UFOs have become quilts this year.

Everyone who finishes at least one UFO will be entered into a drawing for a nice prize, but

remember, the REAL prize is 4 finished quilts! Your odds of winning will never be better.

Camp Watch-A-Patcher

Save the Date: July 7-11, 2013

Camp will be here before you know it. It’s four days of Friends, Super Fun, and Quilting to boot. I

always liked walking into the cafeteria just swinging my arms and walking away with a delicious

meal that I didn’t have to cook. Vanguard University is a beautiful venue and flat too. You can

stay all four days, be a day camper, or just come to the evening programs. Start planning now to

come. It’ll be here before you know it.

Also think about getting involved. I still need a few more Opportunity Baskets. Get together with

some friends and volunteer to do JUST ONE BASKET of any theme. They don’t even have to be

over the top….regular is good. (Contact me if you’re interested.)

CWAP Kick off will be at our Guild Meeting On Tuesday December 11, 2012. Plan to find out

about the Camp challenge then too.

Thank you in advance to our members who have already stepped forward to chair a committee

or do a job. I certainly appreciate it. We will start committee meetings in October.

Just thinking about Camp Watch-A-Patcher gets me excited!!!! WooHoo!!!

BLOGGING ALONG

The Internet is a wealth of information but it can be overwhelming. I love to read blogs

that are written by quilters and other crafters. For the next few months I am going to

FEATURE a blog that I read. I’d also love to FEATURE a few blogs that you like send me

an e-mail with information about your favorite blog.

THIS MONTH’S FEATURED BLOGGER IS

QUILT DAD http://www.quiltdad.com/

John’s blog is fun to read he describes himself as a 36 year-old happily married father of three who loves to

make quilts! ” Originally from Brooklyn NYC, now living in Holly Springs, NC. My beautiful wife and I have 7

year-old twin girls and a 6 year-old son ... you'll often see their smiling faces in my posts!” He is also featured

in in Emily Herrick's fantastic new e-book focusing on quilts for guys! His take on quilting is fun to read and

his projects are delightful. Recently Pat Bravo started a FAT QUARTER GANG. The idea of the Fat Quarter

Gang is pretty simple: the oh so lovely Pat Bravo rounded up a group of bloggers and designers to form a little

sewing group of sorts -- a sewing group that would combine their fresh, new sewing ideas with all of the

gorgeous new fabrics coming out of Art Gallery HQ. Then, once a week, a member of the group would share

a new pattern or project idea on the Art Gallery Fabrics blog. The creative troupe at Art Gallery took their idea

to the next level by totally embracing -- in a fun, lighthearted way, of course -- the "gang" part of the Fat

Quarter Gang. So each of them, as sweet and gentle as they may appear to be on their blogs – embraced

their inner sewing bada$$ and took some (completely embarrassing) member photos. Check out their

PINTEREST BOARD http://pinterest.com/artgalleryfab/fat-quarter-gang/ (BEWARE OF PINTEREST IT IS

ADDICTING)

He posts his projects, free patterns and comments about the life of a quilting man. He only updates his blog a

couple of times a month but his projects are wonderful. You’ll find his work published in Fresh Fabric Finds

from Stash Books, You’ll also find his projects on the Moda Bake Shop just look for John Adams under chefs

and you’ll find his quilts, pillows and iPad sleeve. He also has an original block design featured in the newest

issue of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks from today's top designers magazine
