Casa Batlló, Passeig de Gràcia 43, is the most emblematic work of the brilliant Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí, one of his masterpieces, a key feature in the architecture of modernist Barcelona. It was built between 1904 and 1906 having been commissioned by the textile businessman Josep Batlló. In 2002, for the first time, opened its doors to the public and in 2005 Casa Batlló became a UNESCO World Heritage SiteThe night we went to visit
This is reminiscent of a subterranean cave, a fantastic world of curves which puts you in mind of Captain Nemo’s submarine, the Nautilus. It has skylights in organic shapes and an imposing staircase which represents the spine of some huge beast.
As night falls, Casa Batlló is hosting some exclusive musical events on its Terrace and Noble Floor, creating a unique atmosphere for awakening the senses of anyone who wishes to enjoy an outstanding evening in one of the city’s most iconic buildingsCasa Batlló is opening its doors in the evenings with a full entertainment programme that allows visitors to enjoy all of the magic of Antoni Gaudí in a nocturnal and fantasy-filled atmosphere
You will find this fireplace in Mr Batlló’s office. Its originality lies in its unusual mushroom shape. It has a seat on either side, one for a young courting couple and the other for their chaperone
The Cultural Visit includes an exhibition of Gaudí chairs. This is the best collection of approved craft-made reproductions of solid oak furniture designed by Gaudí at the beginning of the century for Casa Batlló and Casa Calvet.
And did you also know … that there are more than 60 arches in the loft area
The inner courtyard of Casa Batlló is decorated with more than 15,000 glazed tiles
Did you know that there are five different tones of blue tiles used in the building well, inspired by the different shades of the sea, evoking the Mediterranean Sea?
The windows in Casa Batlló play a double role, the upper part being for illumination and the lower part for ventilation
This could be thought of as the lungs of the house, breathing light and air into the whole building.
