Passeig de Gràcia

This is one of the main avenues in Barcelona and one of the city’s most important shopping and business area. It follows the old road that used to link the Town of Gracia (now a city neighbourhood) and Barcelona. Over the years, major international luxury boutiques have sprung up. Along the street we can find impressive modernist works from prominent architects such as Gaudí, Puig i Cadafalch, Domènech i Montaner and Enric Sagnier. Of these, not to be missed are Batlló House and La Pedrera (World Heritage Sites), Amatller House, Fuster House and Robert Palace. In 1906, architect Pere Falqués i Urpí designed the famous ornate mosaic benches and street lamps dotted along the avenue.

Plaça de les GlòriesIn Ildefons Cerdà’s design of Barcelona’s extension, the Plaça de les Glòries was conceived of as the new city center.  Currently it is at the junction of the city’s more important throughfares.  The Avinguda Diagonal, Avinguda Meridiana and Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes.  However it has become a large roundabout for a series of elevated highways.  In recent revitalization efforts, new structures have been planned for the area around the Plaça de les Glòries.Torre AgbarThe first and most well known project is the Torre Agbar by the French architect Jean Nouvel in association with the Spanish firm B720 Arquitectos.  Opened in 2005, it is located in the Poblenou neighborhood of Barcelona.

The form of the Torre Agbar was inspired by Montserrat.  It is built with reinforced concrete with a façade of glass and 4,500 individual windows that puncture the structural concrete.  The building has a series of temperature sensors that regulate the window blinds of the building façade to reduce energy consumption.  At nightfall the buildings façade is illuminated with 4,500 LED devices.

As you approach Torre Agbar, the facade reacts with the colorful concrete core and changes appearances at various angles and distances.

The structure is 34 stories above ground with 4 floors below ground.

In the late 19th century and early 20th century, many countries in Europe experienced a cultural movement that affected art and architecture. In France this movement was called Art Nouveau and in Barcelona it was called Modernisme.

Gaudi was a prominent member of this movement and he and other Catalan architects built many beautiful buildings that are still standing and one of the joys of visiting Barcelona is to see these buildings. Many are in the Eixample District and one can easily do a walk and see many of them.

La Unión y el Fénix Building, Passeig de Gracia 21

The monumentalist building was built between 1927 and 1931 by architect Eusebi Bona i Puig and sculptors Saint Marceau i Frederic Marés. It is known as the Unión y el Fénix Español building, a Spanish insurance company. La Unión y el Fénix on Passeig de Gracia is both a residencial and office building. The building is topped with a cupola crowned by the old company's symbol, a boy sitting on Phoenix, a mythical bird that dies in flames and is reborn from the ashes.

Although according to experts, what the sculpture really represents is the Abduction of Ganymede by Zeus to serve as cupbearer to the gods. Ganymede was a symbol for the ideally beautiful youth in poetry

Santa Maria del Mar is an

imposing church in the Ribera

district of Barcelona, Spain,

built between 1329 and 1383 at

the height of Catalonia's

maritime and mercantile

preeminence. It is an

outstanding example of

Catalan Gothic, with a purity and unity of style that are very unusual

in large mediaeval buildings.

The porters of La Ribera, who collaborated in the construction of the church transporting stones, are represented on the doors of the main entrance
