The Montjuïc was selected as the site for several of the venues of the 1992 Summer Olympics, centred around the Olympic stadium

The Anella Olímpica (Olympic Ring) is spread across the hillside behind the Palau Nacional. The Estadi Olímpic was actually built for the 1929 Universal Exposition, and then extended for the 1992 Olympics. Just outside the stadium is the new Museu Olímpic i de l'Esport, the first in Europe giving a global view of sports, with interactive exhibits and multimedia installations. Beyond the stadium to the west is the immense Olympic Terrace, lined with pillars, the Palau Sant Jordi, an indoor stadium now mostly used for rock concerts, and beyond that Santiago Calatrava’s striking white communications tower, the Torre de Calatrava. 

The Montjuïc Communications Tower, popularly known as Torre Calatrava and Torre Telefónica, is a telecommunication tower designed by Santiago Calatrava. Construction on the tower began in 1989 and was completed in 1992.

The white tower was built for Telefónica to transmit television coverage of the 1992 Summer Olympics Games in Barcelona. The 136 m (446 ft) tower is located in the Olympic park, and represents an athlete holding the Olympic Flame.The base is covered with trencadís, Gaudí's mosaic technique created from broken tile shards.Because of the tower's orientation, it works also as a giant sundial, which uses the Europa square to indicate the hour.

Known as a ‘mountain’, the rocky hill of Montjuïc is only 213 metres (699ft) high, but has an undeniable physical presence in the city. It marks the end of the leisure port, and acts like a barrier between the city centre and the industrial sprawl of the Zona Franca to the south. In 1929 the hill was landscaped and used as the grounds of the Universal Exposition. More recently, it was the nerve centre of the 1992 Olympic Games, and today it is a large city park offering a wide range of cultural, leisure and sporting activities.

The top of the hill (a height of 184,8 m) was the site of several fortifications, the latest of which (the Castle of Montjuïc remains today. The fortress largely dates from the 17th century, with 18th-century additions.

Fundació Joan Miró A Mediterranean luminosity floods the striking building and shows Miró's work in its best light. One of the largest collections in the world of Miró's work, it includes paintings, drawings, sculptures and tapestries, as well as his complete graphic work.It also contains the mercury fountain designed by Alexander Calder for the Spanish Republic’s pavilion in the 1937 Paris Exhibition. Contemporary exhibitions and concerts are also held here regularly.

It also contains the mercury fountain designed by Alexander Calder for the Spanish Republic’s pavilion in the 1937 Paris Exhibition. It seems fitting that this should be here now: the Spanish Pavilion was intended as a political statement, coinciding as it did with the Civil War, was designed by Sert and included Miró's work and Picasso's Guernica.

El Poble Espanyol de Montjuic was built in 1929 for the Barcelona International Exhibition as the pavilion dedicated to art. Since it was conceived, El Poble Espanyol has been considered as a different, unique space within the city. Its urban layout has a surface area of 49,000 m2, a real village with streets and squares and in the natural surroundings of the hills at Montjuic.

For this reason, 117 buildings, streets and squares are reproduced to scale to give an idea of a Spanish village containing the main characteristics of all towns and villages in the Peninsula. This "open-air museum" also holds more than 40 workshops, 11 restaurants, a Flamenco Show, a souvenir shop, etc and is only 10 minutes walking distance from Plaza de Espanya.

Much of Montjuïc’s verdant surface is given over to gardens. The newest is the Jardí Botànic, a beautifully landscaped, sustainable botanical garden in keeping with Barcelona’s aspirations for the new century.

Other thematic gardens include the Jardins de Mossèn Costa i Llobera (one of the biggest collections of cacti in the world) and the Jardins de Mossèn Cinto Verdaguer, specialising in bulbous plants and ablaze with crocuses, daffodils and hyacinths in spring.

The Barcelona Pavilion, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, was the German Pavilion for the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona, Spain. This building was used for the official opening of the German section of the exhibition.

The Barcelona Pavilion, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, is an important building in the history of modern architecture, known for its simple form and its spectacular use of extravagant materials, such as marble, red onyx and travertine. The same features of minimalism and spectacular can be applied to the prestigious furniture specifically designed for the building, among which the iconic Barcelona chair. It has inspired many important modernist buildings, including Michael Manser's Capel Manor House in Kent.

From the Plaça d'Espanya, head past the twin Venetian-style towers that formed the main entrance to the Universal Exposition of 1929. Most of the buildings here were designed for this event, with a sweeping vista up to the Palau Nacional, the enormous, rather overbearing building at the top of the steps. Since 1934 it has housed the wonderful MNAC (Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya).

Since 2004, the Palau Nacional has once more housed several magnificent art collections, mostly by Catalan art, but also Spanish and European art. In front is the imposing Font Màgica, the dancing fountain, which delights thousands of visitors several times a week during the son et lumière shows. 

The Magic Fountain of Montjuïc is a fountain located at the head of Avenida Maria Cristina, situated below the Palau Nacional on the Montjuïc hill and near the Plaça d'Espanya. The fountain, like most of the surrounding developments, was constructed for the 1929 Barcelona International Expo.The Magic Fountain was designed by Carles Buigas, who had designed illuminated fountains as early as 1922. In the 1980s, music was incorporated with the light show and was completely restored prior to the 1992 Summer Olympics, held at Montjuïc.
