Outline Of First Chronicles● David and the Ark of God.

A. The emphasis of 1st and 2nd Chronicles is on the Southern Kingdom and the preservation of

the Davidic line.


1. First Chronicles parallels 2nd Samuel very closely, and 2nd Chronicles parallels the Kings.

2. The difference is from a quite different point of view.


3. These books can be compared to the gospel of John in the New Testament.

4. The first 3 gospels in the New Testament, Matthew, Mark and Luke are what we call the synoptic gospels.


5. These three parallel each other and cover the same general incidents, often from the same

general viewpoint.


6. But the gospel of John is quite different. When John wrote his gospel (about 90 or 95 A.D.) he employed a deliberate selective process.


7. John carefully selected certain things out of Christ’s ministry to illustrate the point he wanted to make.


8. John’s purpose was to show that Jesus is the one that fulfilled all the divine predictions of the

coming Messiah, and that He is the Son of the Living God.


9. The books of 1st and 2nd Chronicles are similar in their selective process.


● The central points around which everything in these books gather are the king and the temple.

1. The king was David. In one sense, he is the only king that appears in these two books. He is God’s king.


2. The second book of Chronicles follows the house of David down through the time of captivity,

almost ignoring the Northern Kingdom.


● The first 9 chapters in 1st Chronicles are a genealogy from Adam to Jacob, Jacob to David, and David to Zedekiah.

1. These genealogies are of great importance.


2. If you look closely at them you

will see that God is choosing and selecting, excluding and

including, working toward an ultimate goal.


3. It is written so that we might see both the goal toward which the Lord works in human history.


● The last twenty chapters chronicle David’s reign in Jerusalem.

1. 1st Chronicles was written after the seventy years of Israel’s captivity in Babylon.


2. It was probably written by Ezra the priest.

3. Ezra was one of the great figures to come back with the captives to re-establish the temple and the worship in Jerusalem.


● There is always one principle that God follows in the process of

selectivity.

1. He includes a man whenever he finds an obedient heart.


2. All the native disability of that man is canceled out and he is immediately made an effectual instrument for the working of God in human history.


3. When God excludes a name, it is always on the basis of the appearance of a disobedient

heart.

4. On that basis God excludes a man, regardless of rank or ancestry or privilege of any kind.


5. You can trace this principle throughout this entire genealogy!

6. This sets the pattern for the rest of the book.


● In chapter 10 there is a brief account that completely covers the life of King Saul, the first of Israel’s kings.

1. Saul is dismissed in only fourteen verses. The reason is given in verses 13 and 14.


● The rest of the book is all about David. David was a king after

God’s own heart---a king with an obedient heart.


1. The book traces the whole course of David’s life from the moment he was anointed king.

● The second emphasis of this book is on the ark of God.


1. In Chapter 10 it recounts the story of Uzzah who was killed when he touched the ark.

2. David realized his mistake and had the Levites move the ark according to the law.


● Beginning in chapter 18 the ark is brought back and placed at the site of the temple.

1. David’s conquest over all his enemies throughout the kingdom are recorded.


2. Chapters 18, 19, and 20 are devoted to the victories of King David, describing what happens in the heart, if Christ is crowned king.


● The only dark picture in the book is in chapter 21.

1. The numbering of the people of Israel.


2. The numbering of Israel was a departure of dependence upon

the strength and glory of God.

3. His sin was he wanted to gloat and glory in the number of people that were available to him as king.


● The double sin of adultery and murder are overlooked and passed over in total silence.

1. These were David’s personal sins as a man. That sin was his own weakness as an individual, not as a king.


● The rest of the book tells of David’s passion for building of the temple.

1. Unfortunately David was a man of war, and God wanted a man of peace to rule over the nations of the earth.

(22:6-19)


2. In grace God allowed David to do everything for the temple but actually build it.


3. He drew the plans, he designed the furniture, he collected the materials, he made the

arrangements, he set up the order, and ritual.


4. He quarried the stones, he gathered the gold, the silver and iron.

● The book closes as the anointed Solomon and David reign side by side.


● A complete picture of the ministry of Lord Jesus.


Outline Of Second Chronicles● Tremendous riches are hidden away in the neglected book of 2nd Chronicles.


● This book follows only the course of the kings of Judah, the

descendants of David.

1. Both 1st and 2nd Chronicles center on the temple.


2. This book gives us a picture of God’s king walking in the light of God’s house.


● The first nine chapters of 2nd Chronicles all center on the temple.

1. The book opens with a visit of Solomon to the tabernacle in the city of Gibeon.


2. Solomon goes there to make an offering. But the account is transferred from the tabernacle to the temple site which David had bought in Jerusalem.


● The account goes on in chapter 2 to show how the temple was built by Solomon.

1. The temple was a new beginning. Everything was new except for the ark.


2. Silver was counted as nothing in the days of Solomon.

3. The guarantee of God needs no renewing!!


● The prayer of Solomon in chapter 6 shows that the temple was also made for the restoration of sin.

1. When Solomon had finished his prayer, fire came down

from heaven and consumed the sacrifice on the altar.


2. Immediately the temple was filled with a cloud of glory so that the priest could not enter.

3. This was a sign that God had accepted the offering and of the presence of God in this house.


● It was immediately followed by an account of the tremendous

conquests and glory of the kingdom.

1. Chapter nine is the account of the visit of the Queen of Sheba to Solomon.


2. This was a picture of God’s own method of evangelism.

3. The world wondered what is there about these people, I want to know what this is all about?


4. When the Queen of Sheba came to Solomon, she saw what it was all about.

5. She said the half of it was never told to me.


● Have you ever had Solomon’s experience?

● Have you ever had somebody say to you after coming to know you better, You know there is something about your life that drew me when I first saw you.


1. Now I have learned the secret of it!

2. This is God’s method of evangelism!


● Chapters 10 through 36 go on to give us the record of the kings of Judah up to the time of the

captivity.

1. Nine of them were good kings and eleven were bad.


2. Manasseh who reigned for 55 years started out as the worst king and ended up as one of the best.

3. The bad kings reveal the pattern

of temptation and evil in a disobedient heart.


4. There is a declining standard here.

5. It begins with the infiltration of evil into the kingdom on a trivial level.


6. Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, was unwilling to listen to the counsel of the wise men of his

kingdom.


7. Rehoboam forsook the law of the Lord, he turned a deaf ear to what God said. As a result the

kingdom was invaded by the Egyptians.


● There are five great reformations recorded in Israel as God seeks to arrest this deteriorating process in the nation and restore blessing

and glory.


1. The first period of restoration was under king Asa in chapters 14 through 16.

2. The second period was under King Jehoshaphat in chapter 17.


3. The third restoration came in chapters 23 and 24 under king Joash.

4. The forth restoration came in chapters 29 through 32 during the reign of Hezekiah.


5. The last principle of restoration came under king Josiah, the last good king of Judah.


● The last chapter gives us the account of the terrible dark days when Nebuchadnezzar took the city captive and set a puppet king upon the throne.


● Then Nebuchadnezzar set his brother on the throne, until he came to

destroy both the rebellious city and the temple

with fire!
