1971-Federal Judge Robert McRae made the ruling to end segregation in Memphis City Schools

1973-Massive busing begins in the city on January 24th

1981-Revisited the desegregation law and rezoned the district-used less buses

2004-Discontinued using busing as a means to desegregation

The Bus Solution Busing began in Memphis in January, 1973, Memphis did not own one bus prior to

the decision-42 buses were purchased for 1.5 million dollars 38,000 students were bused and spent 31-45 minutes on the bus each way 5,347 students spent 46-60 minutes on the bus each way In 2004 less than 3 percent of students were bused
