TRANSCRIPT
I welcome you to attend the inaugural Health System 100
Conference on October 15-18, 2017 at The Ritz-Carlton,
Amelia Island, Florida.
Our goal is to make this the single most valuable conference
of your year. As the payment system moves towards value, as
provider competition to health systems heats up, and as healthcare
consumerism grows, it is vital for system leaders to drive visionary
change. Health System 100 aims to be an original source of insight
and inspiration for you in your leadership journey ahead.
Who are we? Lincoln Healthcare Leadership is an independent
healthcare education company, founded in 1998. Since then,
we have built three leadership summits that have come to be
regarded as the “gold standard” in their sectors (LTC 100,
Senior Living 100 and Home Care 100).
Health System 100’s content is future-looking, insightful, and
prescriptive. Tapping very sharp minds in healthcare, and some
original research, we will present 1) what the future holds, 2) what
leading-edge providers’ strategy should be, and 3) what practical
steps you should take now.
Health System 100 has been created for very forward-thinking
leaders of health systems. This will be not only a conference, but
also a valuable leadership community for you to share with year-
round. Please join us at Health System 100 this fall!
Sincerely,
David EllisFounder & President, Lincoln Healthcare LeadershipManaging Director, Health System 100

Healthcare Reform 2.0: Will Systems Fare Better or Worse? The new administration has made bold claims about repealing the ACA, scaling back regulations and overhauling healthcare exchanges. But legislation has not come easy, leaving impending reform very much up in the air. Healthcare policy experts will deliver an up-to-date (October) decipherment of healthcare reform in Washington and forecast how Trump-era regulations will impact the business of health systems, including:
• Medicaid reform, capitation and block grants.
• The CMS regulatory environment and the future of CMMI.
• MACRA and physician reimbursement reform.
• The state of value-based care initiatives: Medicare Advantage, bundled payments and ACOs.

Private Equity on the Future of the Health System Leading healthcare private equity investors will share their strategic views on the future of health systems. If they were making an investment in a for-profit health system, what business models and management team attributes are they looking for? Are they investing in any health system competitors? What advice do they have for us to compete against, or partner with, these competitors?

9:15 – 9:45 am Home Hospitalization: How Marshfield Clinic
Cracked the Code
This value-based care leader – one of only two ACOs that achieved shared savings over the course of the Pioneer program – has cracked the code on home hospitalization, with a 30-day prospective bundled payment for CHF; COPD; deep vein thrombosis; UTI; cellulitis; and pneumonia. Marshfield executives will describe this year-old initiative, including its role in mitigating unwarranted admissions and re-admissions, and recommend how other health systems can replicate their model.
9:45 – 10:15 am The Virtual Hospital: Avera Health Redefines
Acute Telemedicine
Sioux Falls, SD-based Avera Health, a 33-hospital integrated network, will share a case study of Avera eCare. This 20-year-old telehealth initiative has service lines now spanning ICU, Emergency, Pharmacy, Long Term Care, Correctional, and Specialty. We will walk the creation of their virtual hospital, including staffing, technology, physical structure and the development of external provider clients.
 10:15 – 10:45 am “Micro-Hospitals”: Dignity’s Plan for an
Outpatient Future
Health systems in a handful of markets across the nation are building very small, full-service hospitals that fill the gap between urgent care centers and large inpatient buildings. San Francisco-based Dignity Health will share the strategy behind its micro-hospitals, which offer 24/7 service through eight to ten ER bays, imaging and lab services, and fewer than a dozen inpatient beds.

Chronic Care Management: The Holy Grail The field of chronic care management (CCM) is growing rapidly, and one by-product will be reduced hospital admissions. As we move towards a value-based system, the highest healthcare utilizers – the 5% of the population who account for 50% of healthcare dollars – are becoming a big focus of payers, private-equity funded new providers, and existing post acute providers. This session will explain this sector, show its business models, estimate its impact, and recommend what health systems should do to compete or partner with CCM firms.
Privia Health is a population health management company built around a multispecialty physician group (Privia Medical Group, 1,500 physicians in six states) and an MSSP ACO (Privia Quality Network).

Health System 2027: Four Bold Business Models Lincoln Healthcare Leadership is conducting a research study that will prescribe the four most promising business models for successful health systems of the future. We are interviewing more than 50 health system CEOs, healthcare strategy consultants, healthcare futurists, private equity investors, and disruptive entrepreneurs.
Over the next ten years, we can expect a continuing buildup of tectonic forces: increasing incentive to bend the healthcare cost curve downward, increasing consumerism, and increasing disruptors to health systems’ dominant position. The likely consequences: fee-for-service will wane, value-based care will dominate, acute care revenues will be lower than today, some fraction of health systems will close, and leading health systems’ business models will look substantially different. This project aims to peer into this future, describe the business models most likely to succeed, and recommend the sequential steps for getting there from the present.

CEO Panel: Getting Serious About Value-Based Care Leading health system executives will discuss what it will take to go from “dabbling” in value-based care to having a majority share of revenues tied to at-risk payment. They will address where the greatest profit potential is among value-based payment structures; what it takes to succeed in ACOs, bundles and managed care contracting; how to instill real clinical and cultural transformation; and why it’s necessary to critically examine the breadth of one’s service line offerings.

Debate: To Employ or Not to Employ Physicians Two leading health system executives – one bullish on physician employment, the other bearish – will engage in a formal debate over employing physicians in a value-based environment.
This debate will address several key questions affecting a system’s physician strategy, including: What do today’s physicians value more in an employment arrangement – independence or job security? When is it better to employ PCPs versus specialists? And what works best to incentivize physicians to refer patients back to the system?

Who Will Win the Managed Care/Health System Power Struggle? As our system churns towards value, the relationship between insurers and health systems will undergo substantial change. This session will predict whether one side will gain increasing advantage over the other, how pricing and contracts are likely to change, and how health systems can best advantage themselves. We will consider:
• Health system consolidation
• Insurance consolidation
• Health systems becoming payers
• Insurers becoming providers
• The employer perspective
• Future healthcare policy
• Emerging competition to both health systems and insurers
• Increasing consumerism in healthcare
