APA: In-Text Citation

>In-text citations help the reader identify where you got the piece of information in the text

>Include all in-text citation sources in your reference page

>“Whether paraphrasing [an idea], quoting the author directly, or describing an idea that influenced your work, you must credit the sources” (APA, 2010, p.170).

APA: In-Text Citation

Quotes, Paraphrases, and Summaries > Quotes: match the original source document

word for word, use quotation marks

> Paraphrasing: re-tell idea or passage of another source in your own words, usually about a specific portion or idea of text

> Summarizing: Rewording the main ideas(s)/point(s) of a source into your own concise words. Similar to paraphrasing, but often shorter and includes all main points of a source

In-Text Citation Format

> Put the citation in parentheses after the text and before the period of the sentence relevant to the source you’re citing

> Direct Quotes: use quotation marks and include the author + year of publication

> Example: “When a society institutionalizes oppression formally or informally, the result is called systematic oppression” (Van Dernoot Lipsky, 2009).

>When paraphrasing/using an author’s ideas in your paper

without direct quotations, you don’t need to include the

page number. Just include: the author or title + year of

publication in parenthesis

>Example: Social democratic theory argues that a centralized

government has the responsibility to use its power promote a

society in which people have equal rights and opportunities

(Taylor, 2006).

In-Text Citation Format: Paraphrasing

In-Text Citation Format>One source with two authors: Separate the authors with an ampersand (&), followed by a

comma, and year of publication

>One source with three to five authors: Separate the authors with commas and use an

ampersand (&) before the last author, followed by the year of publication

> Examples:

>Ageism—the discrimination against individuals based on their age—is widespread, generally

accepted, and largely ignored (Angus & Reeve, 2006).

>De-escalation and crisis intervention trainings for police departments around the country

have shown positive outcomes for police and offenders, with a decreased possibility of arrest

of an individual who has a mental illness (Fuller, Lamb, Biasotti, & Snook, 2015).

In-Text Citation Format

> One source with three to five authors: Separate the authors with commas and use an ampersand (&) before the last author, followed by the year of publication.

> One source with more than five authors: in first citation of paper, list all authors, in rest of citations, use the first author’s name, followed by et al., and the year of publication.

> Multiple Sources: If your citation includes ideas or findings from multiple sources, include the author + year of publication of each source, and separate with a semicolon (;).

> 1 inch margins> Double-spaced > Order: alphabetize by last name of author in reference> Indent every line following the first line of text in a reference /

this is called a hanging indentation> Build / record your reference page as you go> Citation machines can save time and help keep your sources

organized / consider using programs like Zotero, Refworks, and Endnote — but always double check the citation

>Put publishing dates in parenthesis

>Capitalize and italicize all major words in journal titles

>Capitalize only the first work of a book title and italicize all words

>An organization could be the author of a reference, like the American Psychological Association—in this case, put the organization in the place of the author for this reference

Books: Author(s). + (date). + Title of Book. + City of publisher, state of publisher (abbreviated): Publisher.

Text Book Editions: Author(s). + (date). + Title of book (ed.#). + City of publisher, state of publisher (abbreviated): Publisher.

Example:Nieto, L. (2010). Beyond inclusion, beyond empowerment: A developmental strategy to liberate everyone. Olympia, WA: Cuetzpalin Publishing.

Shea, S. (1998). Psychiatric interviewing: The art of understanding (2nd ed.). Philadelphia, PA: Saunders Publishing.

>A Chapter in a Book: Author. + (date). + Title of chapter. + In Editors names (Eds.). + Title of book, inclusive pages. + City of publisher, state of publisher (abbreviated): Publisher.>Articles in Journals: Author. + (date). + Title of article. Journal Title,

volume(issue), inclusive pages.

> Example:Sormanti, M. (2012). Writing for and about clinical practice. In Green, W. & Simon, B.L. (Eds). The columbia guide to social work writing, 114- 132. New York, NY: Columbia University Press.
