Abusecommitteddirectlyagainstachild,orviolencecommittedinthechild’spresence,canmakeachildmorevulnerabletoavariety of adverse consequences. Changes may occur in behavior, school performance, eating and sleeping habits, physicalsymptomsand/orfriendships.Signscaninclude:

Emotionalabusecanbeasdamagingasphysicalabuse indestroying thechild’s self‐confidenceandself‐esteem.Being in thepresenceofoffensiveandabusivebehaviorisnotinthebestinterestofthechild.Researchshowsthatchildrenwhohavebeensubjectedorexposedtoviolenceintheirhomeshaveabetterchanceofminimizingtheharmsustainedtothemifallsystemsintervene,maximizing theirexposure tosupportive roleswithcaringadults,especially thenon‐violentparent,andminimizingtheexposuretotheviolenceanditsaccompanyingbehaviors.NAT’LCOUNCILOFJUVENILE&FAMILYCT.JUDGES,AJUDICIALGUIDETOCHILDSAFETYINCUSTODYCASES,BENCHCARD1(2008).
