ABOUT ORGANIZING INSTITUTES

Loyola College, ChennaiLoyola College, a Catholic Minority Institution, was founded in Chennai by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1925, with the primary objective of educating young men and women to serve People and Nature in Justice, Truth and Love. Loyola College is affiliated to University of Madras. UGC has elevated Loyola college to the status of “College of Excellence. Loyola is ranked 6th Top College in India by NIRF in 2019.

Entomology Research Institute (ERI) ERI is the centre of excellence of Loyola College, Chennai. It was started as a small unit in 1963, and it moved into a separate building in 1986. Prof. T.N Ananthakrishnan, a great Entomologist was the Founder Director. At present Rev. Dr S. Maria Packiam, SJ is the Director. ERI is a nationally and internationally recognized centre for research in different fields of biological science. The areas of research are as follows: Insect Biodiversity, Biological Control of Pests, Biopesticides, Mosquito Control, Ethnopharmacology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Genetic Engineering, Biotechnology and Phytochemistry. In 2019 ERI was honoured with the ISO 9001:2015 certificate for the quality of research and research outputs.

National Bureau of Agricultural Insect Resources (NBAIR)

NBAIR is located in Hebbal, Bengaluru in the same premises where the Commonwealth Institute of Biological Control (CIBC), Indian Station was established in 1957. The entire programme is supported by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). NBAIR acts as a nodal agency for collection, characterization, documentation, conservation, exchange and utilization of agriculturally important insect resources for sustainable agriculture. Dr Chandish R. Ballal is the present Director of ICAR-NBAIR.

THEME

About 926,400 different insect species have been identified and described. The most well-known insects are those that cause disease or damage the agricultural products, but these insects represent only a small number of the world’s insect population. Most insects are beneficial to humans and the environment. Without insects, the environment could not function well. Insects provide natural services. About 80% of the flowering plants on earth are pollinated by insects. They are also responsible for much of the nutrient cycling, conditioning and aeration of the soil. Insects are excellent indicators of the health of ecosystem. Insects as vectors of disease weaken or kill 200 million people per year. Insect diversity is an important component in the health and wealth of environment. The level of insect variety has direct impact of change of climate and the climatic factors influence to the congregation, dispersal and shifting of population of insects. Hence, the presentations and discussions which will be focussed on insect diversity will awaken the minds of the participants towards the insect biodiversity and conservation. The themes of this two-day national symposium will be as follows:

• DiversityandTaxonomyofInsectFauna• Agricultural,AquaticandMedicalEntomology• InsectConservationandSustainableDevelopment

• ImpactofClimateChangeandRangeExtensionofInsectFauna• GIS,RemoteSensingandLandscapeEcology• UseofMolecularMarkersinSystematicsandEcologyOBJECTIVES• To create an ecological consciousness and culture that conserve insect biological diversity at national level.• Topromotecollaborationinordertoprotectbiologicalresourcesfromtheill-effectscausedby industrialization, over-population, urbanization and self-centredness. • To provide a multidisciplinary platform that promotes the status, conservation and sustainable utilization of Insect biodiversity. • Toenhancetheyoungmindsandheartstobecomeecologistsandtaxonomistsbydeliveringthe information on the rich biodiversed heritage of the earth and linking taxonomy and biodiversity conservation of Insect.RESOURCE PERSONSResource Persons will include Top Invited Entomologists from Universities and Research Institutions.
