A TRIBUTE TO HORST .MUSER FOR HIS SEVENTIETH BIRTHDAY

As a young sabbatical visitor to Switzerland, 1 was attending the EMF in Dijon and visiting a well-stocked cave on a tour, where Professor Miiser talked with me and invited my wife and me to visit Saarbriicken. We went there by train, and after the usual scientific interactions were invited to his home for dinner, which was a very enjoyable visit. This was the first of several visits and stays, during which we were together at several dinners. I remember his unfailing good humor and friendliness.

Our most recent visit was for the IMF-7. Professor Miiser was the chair of the organizing committee for this excellent Meeting, which was most enjoyable socially as well as scientifically.

Professor Miiser has tackled a wide variety of problems, going back before the first IMF and up to the present. These include dielectric, specific heat, and ultrasonic measurements on a variety of crystals, ranging from Rochelle salt, barium titanate and TGS through BP/BPI, BCCD, and betaine phosphate and arsenate. More recently, he has been engaged in Monte Carlo simulations of squaric acid and study of chaotic behavior near ferroelectric phase transitions. This variety of contributions attests to his wide ranging curiosity and skill in analytical thinking.

I am happy to join his many friends in wishing him the best in the coming years.
