INTRODUCTION
Poetry is therapeutic; it also serves an educational and entertainment
formative function. Unfortunately many children and adults too do not
like poetry. I believe that if poetry is taught properly and children are
introduced to poetry at an early age, there would be more
appreciation for this area of Language Arts.
Here are some poems from a collection of children’s poems I am
currently developing.
WHO CAN SPEAK
Too whit tu-whoo says the owl
hooting on the old plum tree
Cuck- a-doodle-doo, says the cock
looking at his chickens to be
Caw, Caw, Caw, cries the crow
how he longs for something to eat
Chirp, Chirp, Chirp, says the robin redbreast
who has found some grains of wheat
Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap, goes the woodpecker
with his sharp, long beak
Oh be quiet, oh be quiet, says the parrot
I am the only one who can speak.
A KISS GOODNIGHT
Every child deserves a kiss before he goes to bed
A nightcap, a bedtime story, or a pat upon his weary head
And children should never be told ghost stories before they go to sleep
Lest they have nightmares filled with witches that try to creep
Into their minds and change all their dreams
Of lands filled with fairies and beautiful streams
But instead every child should be taught to pray
For all the other children and a brighter day
So that angels watch over them during the night
And they will sleep soundly until morning light.
THE RAINBOW
Once upon a hot and sunny day
After the flood washed everything away
Father God looked down and said,
‘Noah, all the evil men are dead.’
Said he to the watery earth,
‘Tis’ time for your rebirth.’
He splashed some colors way up high.
Soon a rainbow appeared in the sky
Red, orange, yellow and green
Were some of the colors to be seen
Blue, indigo and violet
An arch of colors beautifully set
Soon many plants begin to grow
They borrowed some colors from the rainbow
The rainbow soon left the sky
As the earth continued to dry
But Noah knew it would come again
When God sent a shower of rain
