10GBASE-T: IEEE 802.3anThe New Standards
Cabling for 10GBASE-Tand Beyond
IEEE 802.3an:2006 Clause 55.7 Link segment characteristics
10GBASE-T is designed to operate over ISO/IEC 11801 Class E or Class F 4-pair balanced cablingthat meets the additional requirements specified in this subclause
Each of the four pairs supports an effective data rate of 2500 Mb/s in each direction simultaneously
The term “link segment” used in this clause refers to four duplex channels
Specifications for a link segment apply equally to each of the four duplex channels
All implementations of the balanced cabling link segment specification shall be compatible at the MDI
It is recommended that the guidelines (proposed) inANSI/TIA/EIA-TSB-155, ISO/IEC TR-24750, ANSI/TIA/EIA-568-B.2-10, and ISO/IEC 11801 Edition 2.1
be considered before the installation of 10GBASE-T equipment for any cabling system
Minimum Cat. 6 “RJ45” unscreened/screened plus additional requirements
IEEE 802.3an:2006 Clause 55.7.1 Cabling system characteristics
The cabling system used to support 10GBASE-T requires4 pairs of ISO/IEC 11801 Class E or Class F balanced cabling with a nominal impedance of 100 ΩΩΩΩ
Operation on other classes of cabling may be supported if the link segment meets the requirements of 55.7
10GBASE-T is an ISO/IEC 11801 Class E and Class F application with the additional transmissionrequirements specified in this subclause …. Mitigation practices may be required—see Annex 55B
10GBASE-T uses a star topology with Class E or Class F balanced cabling used to connect PHY entities

IEEE 802.3an:2006 55.7.2 Link segment transmission parameters
A link segment consisting of up to 100 m of Class E or up to 100 m of Class F that meets the transmissionparameters of this subclause provides a reliable medium
The transmission parameters of the link segment include
• nominal impedance• delay parameters
• insertion loss• ELFEXT
• NEXT loss (NEXT)• MDNEXT loss (PSNEXT)• return loss
In addition, the requirements for the alien crosstalk coupled “between” link segments is specified
ISO/IEC 11801 Class E specificationsextended by extrapolating the formulasto a frequency up to 500 MHz withappropriate adjustments for lengthwhen applicable as specified in ISO/IECTR-24750 and TIA/EIA TSB-155

ALIEN CROSSTALK
Alien crosstalk requirements are applicable only to Classes EA and FA.
Alien crosstalk of Class F is considered to be as good as the alien crosstalk performance specified Class EA.
AXT (PSANEXT/PSAACR) is met by design if:• Class EA coupling attenuation is 10 dB better than Class requirement• Class F coupling attenuation is 10 dB better than Class requirement• Class FA coupling attenuation is 25 dB better than Class requirement

Consider well-spaced panels (the use of cord management panels)
Analyse lengths in advance of installation: create “common length” panels
Although this reduces the interface “real estate” within a cabinet it enables:• unbundling and randomising of cords;• improved cord separation;• the use of longer cords;• interface separation;
• the number of connections involving connecting hardware with high coupling;• including screened connectors that are not individually screened;

SOURCES OF SPECIFIC ANEXT/AACR-F FAILURES
PROCESSES TO IMPROVE ANEXT/AACR-F FAILURES
Reduce the number of connections in the channel
Unbundle and randomise cords
Unbundle and randomise the installed cables at appropriate ends
Utilise cords sufficiently specified to mitigate the alien crosstalk coupling
Increase separation distance between interfaces at each locationUtilise longer cords (within channel limits)
Increase the distance between cords at each location
Segregate long and short channels
Use administration records to indicate initial configurations
• the number of connections involving connecting hardware with high coupling;• including screened connectors that are not individually screened;
• screened connecting hardware with poor transfer impedance;• the performance, length and dressing of “equipment” cords;• the performance, length and dressing of the entire channel;• the mixture of short and long channels.
