Embracing a wealth of experience inresearch and development, design,manufacturing, and most importantlyoperator experience, Thermo Kinghas produced a new temperaturecontrolled package. The new SL-400is the latest addition to Thermo King'sSL range for trailers.

The new system responds directly toexpressed customer needs in keyareas such as load protection, costmanagement, performance and easeof use and simply bristles with coldchain innovation.

The system, which uses R-404A, isextremely efficient, even during pull-down and recovery and gives precisebut economical temperature controlat all set points. Delivery cycle timesare greatly reduced by virtue of itsspeed in pulling down to 0°C, whichis 40 minutes quicker than itspredecessor.

Where certain delicate goods areconcerned, the pull-downperformance is a critical factor;grapes for example will deterioratemore in 10 minutes at 35°C than in15 hours at 20°C. This effectivelyprovides an extended shelf-life forfresh produce which has been loadeddirectly from harvest at ambienttemperatures.

Recovery is 55% faster than beforeand this will give the remaining loadthat extra protection, especiallywhere multiple delivery drops requirefrequent door openings. This is alldown to the SL-400’s enormous cold

air movement capability, which isgreater and quicker in a fully ladentrailer than any other systemcurrently on the market.

The continuing growth of e-commerce in the burgeoninghome delivery and internetgrocery business has promptedThermo King to extend andfurther develop its range ofsmall truck and vanrefrigeration units.

Using Thermo King’s latest Smart Reefercontroller (fewer keys for simpleroperation) with its optional (and highlyconvenient) in-cab controls, the SL-400 isdesigned for ease of use and, mostsignificantly, the reduction of driver errorto a minimum.

The new MP-VI Smart Reefer featuresThermo King’s new OptiSet system whichallows the operator to pre-determine up to10 pre-set temperature managementprogrammes to suit various types ofproduce. This greatly simplifies thetransporter's job and further minimises the risk of load damage due to driver error.

The pre-set programmes enable theoperator not only to ensure that specificloads are provided with the optimumconditions in transit, but also that themaximum possible economy of operationis delivered by keeping unit operatingtime to a minimum.

Another revolutionary feature is the newevaporator blower design whichprovides more air flow and air throw,without incurring any noise, fuelconsumption or engine-loadingpenalties. Indeed being up to 200 kg lighter than its nearestcomparable rival gives the SL-400 owner a significant weight advantage on everyload.

To enhance the overall performance,Thermo King has added an ElectronicThrottling Valve (ETV). This, oncommand from the controller, constantlycontrols refrigerant flow for theperformance required. When carryingfresh produce, the ETV providestemperature modulation to maintain

moisture content andmaximise shelf-life.

The economicsachieved aresubstantial. In side-by-side tests, the SL-400'snearest rivalconsumed up to 40%more fuel. With fuelaccounting for close to halfthe total life cost of a system(and fuel costs rising) this isno small advantage.

The newest TCI concept offers the operatorthe flexibility to transport any combinationof frozen, chilled and ambient produce insmall trucks or vans, including bothcompartments for either frozen or chilled.The temperature of each compartment isoperated separately by the driver fromwithin the cab, ensuring precise andindependent temperature control. Thissystem provides total flexibility in the use of a small truck or van with two or morecompartments.

Small fridge vehicles using this new TCImulti-temperature concept are already beingoperated in the UK by Tesco and otherThermo King units are used by the world’slargest internet delivery company, Webvan

All of the new models can operate on12/24 volt DC. Some are intended onlyfor road operation use, with no electricstandby option, while other versions areavailable for either single or three phasestandby work.

Options includethe DAS (dataacquisitionsystem) forcomprehensivetemperaturemonitoring, abypass oil filterwhichstretchesmaintenanceintervals from 750 hoursto 1,000 hours and magnetic doorswitches to automatically turn the systemoff when the vehicle doors are open andthus avoid the ingress of warm air.

Improved multi-drop performance andlower operating costs

Compared with similar units from othermanufacturers, the UTS’s economicalTK3.95 diesel engine, the highly efficientscroll compressor and durable Poly-V drivebelt, delivers a quieter, more fuel-efficientperformance with a much faster pull-downand temperature recovery. All of these areimportant factors especially when used onhigh street deliveries with very frequentdoor openings.

Because Thermo King's exclusive Scrollcompressor is more efficient than othersystems, it requires less fuel – leading toreduced operating costs as well asenvironmental advantages associated withlower CO2 emissions. With 87% fewermoving parts, the system is highly reliableand designed to have a longer workinglife with fewer repairs.

Cool DataSolutions from Thermo King

R:COM is a new generationcommunication solution developed inresponse to the growing demand for a lowcost wireless method of exchanginginformation between the vehicle mounteddata recorder and office based PCs.

With R:COM, there is no need to physicallyconnect the data logger to a laptop orprinter. All data from vehicle-mountedloggers is downloaded automatically to anoffice PC – and appended to theappropriate Wintrac file, via a radio basedlocal area network as soon as the vehicleenters the depot.

This is all achieved automatically, with nohuman effort and – most importantly – noincrease in running costs. For anyalarm situations that arise, in additionto an audiblealarm, an e-mail orSMS message isimmediatelysent to thepersonresponsible.

R:COM also has the flexibility to be used asa logistics tool for effective trafficmanagement. The system allows eachvehicle to be tagged with a description,and will show on screen which vehiclesare available in the depot.

R:COM supports the complete range ofThermo King truck and trailer data loggers,giving operators easy access tomanagement data that will assist inimproving the effectiveness of theiroperation, increase vehicle utilisation andreduce costs.

The environmentally-friendly system is a remarkable 50 kglighter than conventional arrangements,using significantly less refrigerant, andminimised electrical power consumption.

The compact design requires just one heatexchanger and fan for both heating andcooling, with the condenser, compressorand evaporator housed in a self-containedbelow-floor cabinet. With fewer parts usedin its simplified refrigeration circuit, the unitrequires very little maintenance, leading tolower service costs.

Weighing in at just 222 kg includingcompressor, the compact one-piece roof-mounted structure is substantiallylighter than competitive units. Despite itscompact size and low weight, the unitoperates at an impressively high capacity – up to 34.2 kW (with R407Crefrigerant) at an outside ambient of 35°C.

The new ShuttleAire SR-50represents a new direction for small andmid-sized buses (24-30 passengers). Theeasy-to-install one-piece roof-mountedsystem is very light weight (only 95 kgincluding compressor), and features lowpower consumption coupled with a highheating and cooling capacity.

With driver comfort in mind, Thermo Kingis introducing the SR-15 – a lightweightdriver cab air conditioning unit ideal notonly for buses, but also for trucks and off-road vehicles. Thermo King introduces THERMOGARDfrom THERMO KING TOTAL KARE, acomprehensive new service andmaintenance package which will beavailable to Thermo King customers acrossEurope. Tailored to each individualoperator's needs, the wide range ofoptions offered by THERMOGARD willassist operators in maximising theirrefrigeration unit uptime, and maintaintheir equipment to the industry's higheststandards.

Optionally, Thermogard programmes willinclude the installation of TRAC-KING, asatellite based data communication andunit location device which will provide unitoperation, location and load statusinformation on a real time basis.

How it worksAn operator will take a service andmaintenance contract with TOTAL KARE,out of a wide range of programmesavailable under the Thermogard umbrella.The specific programme selected will bechosen to best suit the individualoperator's needs.

Depending on the programme selected,the entire cost of repair and maintenance,or as much of the cost as is chosen by thecustomer, may be fixed into a rate per

running hour, thereby ensuring consistentprogramme pricing. The price will includeall parts and services, or as much as isspecified by the customer, regardless of thelocation they are supplied from.

All service and repair requirements will bearranged through TOTAL KARE. Thecustomer will receive regular servicemanagement reports, as well as reminderswhen scheduled services are due. Anyemergency repairs – anywhere in Europe – can be easily arranged by a singletelephone call to the Total Karemultilingual call centre.

All services will be provided by the fullyqualified and experienced techniciansthroughout Thermo King's Europeandealer network, available 24 hours perday, 365 days per year.
