The Penibaetic Range ofmountains dips its toes intothe Mediterranean on theeastern side of Gibraltar andinto the Atlantic to Gibraltar’swestern seaboard. From herethe range strikes north andthen eastwards, never farfrom the Mediterranean andhas it’s ceiling in the SierraNevada with several peaks ofover 3,000 metres. It is asdramatic as it is stunning. The

Serrania De Ronda is situated amidst the limestone peaks, which lie west of theSierra Nevada. The area’s highest peak is Torrecilla at 1,919 metres. To thesouthwest of the Serrania the mountains are sandstone. The habitats of the areaare varied and include sheer limestone cliffs, pine woods (P.sylvestris, P.pinaster),Spanish Fir (Abies pinsapo), grasslands, scrub and oak (Q.rotundifolia, Q.suber)woods. Amongst the flora there are many species endemic to the area. The birdcommunity is particularly rich and breeding birds include Golden, Bonelli’s, Bootedand Short-toed Eagles, Griffon and Egyptian Vultures, Peregrine Falcon, LesserKestrel, Eagle Owl, White-rumped, Alpine and Pallid Swifts, Blue Rock Thrush,Rock Thrush, Black Wheatear, Black Redstart, Chough, Rock Sparrow, RockBunting and Crossbill.

The Serrania and its surroundings include three major natural parks, Sierra de lasNieves (declared BiosphereReserve by UNESCO in 1995),Sierra de Grazalema (declaredBiosphere Reserve by UNESCO in1977) and Los Alcornocales arichly wooded park and declaredZEPA reserve (zone of especialprotection for the birds). Major riversystems flowing to the southinclude the Rio Genal and RioGuadiaro, both are important to themany species of birds that avoidhigher land altitudes duringmigration and for summerresidents as the rivers flow in thehigh summer, when most other rivers are dry. These rivers act as a natural highwayfor many migrating species in spring and autumn.

The area is remarkable, not onlyfor being an internationallyimportant area for fauna andflora, but also for an almost totallack of organised research intoeven a comprehensive list ofbird species using the Serrania. The creeping hand ofagriculture, land development, deforestation and poorlyplanned tree planting all put thisnatural wonder at critical risk.Adding to these risks are illegalpoisoning, trapping and hunting. There is a local saying here ‘If it flies, you caneat it’ You know, it was not so long ago, when under the regime of Franco, that itwas necessary for the rural communities to supplement their diets by whatevermeans possible. You can trace much of the local attitude to birds from this fairlyrecent need to hunt them for the pot. It is sad, but an all too familiar story thatyou hear in most other Mediterranean countries today. However, discovery canmotivate you. Not always the preferred kind, like finding higher densities ofbreeding Rock Thrushes than anyone thought possible, but also by getting someidea why Song Thrushes might be diminishing. Talking to one shoot organiser hementioned, quite casually, that they had shot over 500 Song Thrushes thatseason!

Apart from some research and census work involving raptors, birds by and large;have been poorly served by anyorganised and meaningful basicsurvey work here. The mountingpressures increase the need forknowledge and case building toprotect this most important area. For me it has been depressing, although challenging, to begin aresearch programme, wherevery little is available historicallyto use as a beginning, or by wayof comparing with my ownresults. However, there havebeen some very encouragingfinds to my work i.e. a healthyand still viable population of Bonelli’s Eagle, despite local hunting interests! It maywell be, Bonelli’s have their highest density in Europe here in the Serranía.

Page 6: A Systematic List - serraniaronda.org · The systematic list gives the reader a guide to both the bird’s relative abundance, as well as the time of year it can be expected to appear

The research programmecovers 48 times 10Km²squares. It is a mammothundertaking and includesfringe, out-lying areas ofthe Serrania De Ronda. The methodology usedfollows normal formatsi.e. Linear transects, listening stations andtetrad sampling, but isalso supplemented byringing and colourringing. The latter, colourringing, is being appliedonly to the family

Turdidae and in particular Oenanthe sp. The objects are to establish acomprehensive atlas for all birds of the Serrania at all times of the year, breeding population studies, densities and post juvenile dispersals etc.Habitat registers and their relative importance will also form many of theappendices to the finished research! The published results, expected by2010, will provide a valuable reference for future use. The programme wasundertaken during January 2003.

Preliminary results have produced some pleasant surprises and a smallmeasure of disappointment. Discussion with locals has marked the

decrease and almost extinction oftwo species, Rufous Bush Robin(Cercotrichas galactotes) andOrtolan Bunting (Emberizahortulana) as breeding birds of theSerrania. The Rufous Bush Robinin particular had been formerlycommon. I suspect OrtolanBunting was always a rarebreeding species, occurring morefrequently, as it does today, duringmigration. The decline of theRufous Bush Robin appears to be

a general trend throughout the Iberian Peninsula. As a result, SociedadEspanola de Ornitologia (SEO), has now instigated a national survey intothis species. On a brigher note Spanish Sparrow (Passer hispaniolensis)was discovered breeding for the first time during 2006.

Page 7: A Systematic List - serraniaronda.org · The systematic list gives the reader a guide to both the bird’s relative abundance, as well as the time of year it can be expected to appear

Such species as OlivaceousWarbler (Hippolais pallida),Orphean Warbler (Sylviahortensis), Golden Oriole (Oriolusoriolus), Wheatear (Oenantheoenanthe) and Red-neckedNightjar (Caprimulgus ruficollis)are far more widespread andnumerous, than any previousreports, though limited in theirscope, have stated (Barros, Rioset al). Raptors are particularlywell represented and, apart from decreases with Egyptian Vulture (Neophronpercnopterus), seem to be stable as breeding birds, with possible increases

for Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus). Inaddition the study area hasextremely important breedingpopulations of Short-toed Eagle(Circaetus gallicus), Golden Eagle(Aquila chrysaetos), Booted Eagle(Hieraaetus pennatus), Bonelli’sEagle (Hieraaetus fasciatus),Lesser Kestrel (Falco naumanni),Peregrine Falcon (Falcoperegrinus), Eagle Owl (Bubobubo), Alpine Swift (Apus melba),White-rumped Swift (Apus caffer),

Black Wheatear (Oenanthe leucura), Rock Thrush (Monticola saxatilis), BlueRock Thrush (Monticola solitarius), Chough (Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax), RockSparrow (Petronia petronia) and Crossbill (Loxia curvirostra).

Of course the vast expanse of theprimary area covered by myresearch, includes manyinteresting species, as breeding, wintering or migrating birds. Thevariation in habitats and thearea’s close proximity to thefamous Straits of Gibraltar, notonly lends itself to producing alarge number of species, but onoccasion, the totally unexpected!Peter.S.D.Jones

The whole of the Serrania is worthwhile for birdwatching, but there are sites of specialinterest. Areas are listed, not only for unusual species, but also for ease of access. Thetime of year will dictate which birds may be seen at each site. Please refer to the studyarea map for site (numbered) location.

Con el fin de facilitar al visitante la observación de las aves y optimizar su tiempo deestancia en la Serranía de Ronda, añadimos una lista de lugares especialmenteinteresantes. Se referencian con un orden numérico y localidades (consultar mapa enla página web).
