Understanding the Nature of SL

• Daniel Breen Study (1970)– Questionnaires to 148 colleges, 60 responded, 40 had

leadership development programs.– Six commonalities of leadership programs:

• Students were always involved in planning the programs• The student activities department took a major role in the

planning and implementation of these programs• The best programs cost money• Weekend retreat formats were very popular• Effective programs usually involved small groups and

experience-based learning of an interpersonal and problem-solving nature with the theory and lecture kept to a minimum.

• Feedback sessions where participants were permitted to react to the program were very beneficial.
