Introduction and Background of Facebook

In this technologically advanced world, where most people own a smartphone or a personal

computer, 80% of people under 30 use the Internet regularly and efficiently – from looking up

information to reading the news, the Internet has multitudes of uses. Social networks are one

major part of the online world. Their main purpose has always been communication. During the

American Revolution, corresponding committees were formed to increase communication

between organisations. However, the 21st century needed an update, and social platforms have

taken centre the spotlight.

Mark Zuckerberg and his Harvard University classmates founded Facebook in 2004. Since then,

Facebook has blown up the Internet and arguably reinvented the field of social networking.

Facebook has also gone on to develop multiple technological programs and plans that aim to

improve and explore online communication between people located all over the globe.

According to recent statistics, over 600 million people are using Facebook, with more people

signing up every single day. The main reason for this may be the lack of costs; signing up for

Facebook and utilising its services are virtually free. While Facebook was initially open only for

students of Harvard University, 2006 saw admission being opened for all people aged 13 and

above, as long as they had their own e-mail address.

While Facebook was originally only available on desktop computers, 2006 saw another major

step forward: the application became available on mobile phones, iPads, tablets, and so on. This

has been one of the biggest benefits for Facebook to date, as over 65 million Facebook users are

now regular users of the Facebook mobile phone application alone. Surveys have also found that

most users spend at least 50 minutes per day on Facebook.

One main aim that led to the creation of Facebook was the desire to connect people easily. Over

time, this company has introduced numerous features and functions that allows people to

remain updated with each other’s lives, to come together and raise awareness about topics, to

share their interests through groups, and even to create professional public pages for their

businesses, schools and companies. Therefore, not only has Facebook made it easier for the

common person to stay in touch with their friends and family, but they have also boosted

communication between clients and businesses by adding a new sense of efficiency to their

interaction.

Furthermore, Facebook collaborated with Google Maps in order to allow people to “check in”

their locations every time they visit a new shop, city, or even a new country. This works through

GPS on mobile devices.

Facebook has given so many users the opportunity to communicate, connect and locate old

friends, family members, colleagues, and more. To put it simply, Facebook has truly served the

purpose of a social network for the entire world.

To sign up Facebook and create an account for yourself today, all you need to do is visit

www.facebook.com and fill in the free sign-up form. The image below illustrates how the sign-

up page will look like.
