Sigel. ..Ina Class by Himself ^
Mike Sigel continues to dominate the pro 9-ball
tour. Posting an undefeated record of 7-0 and
recording an overall Accu-Stats average of .896, he
captured The 1st Annual Rak'm Up Classic title. It's
his third major tournament victory in a row and
rewarded him with $5,355 in prize money. Allen
Hopkins played outstanding, yet when you're hit with
a .925 and a .939, there isn't much that you can do.
Buddy Hall was also in top form. He recorded three
of the top ten plays of the tournament (see page 6).
Runner-up Earl Strickland showed shades of greatness
as he sped past Showalter, Parica, Howard, and
DiLiberto before suffering his first lost to Sigel.
He recovered quickly shooting his best match of the
week defeating DiLiberto 11-2 with a .936.
It was truly a labor of love for architect, player,
and now promoter Bob Opsahl. He staged the major
event at the luxurious Sheraton Inn of which
incidentally Opsahl was the architect. He generously
added $10,000 to the purse, awarded $100 a day for
the daily high Accu-Stats score, and $200 each to
the three skillful contestants who each won a
specialty contest. This and the subsequent purse of
$26,775 drew 61 players. (continued on page 17)
Notable Matches Although otherwise uneventful, the match between
Gary Spaeth (.802) and Eric William (.787) marked
the first of many sessions to be Accu-Statted via
video camera. Spaeth won 11-5.
Kyle Willinghaa (.770) never held the lead in the
session until he pocketed the last four balls
defeating favorite Jiaaiy Reid (.688) 11-10.
Bill Incardona (.926) was awarded a $100 bonus for
shooting Monday's high TPA during his 11-3 victory
over Ralph Guest (.725).
Despite falling behind 7-9, JM Flowers (.835) held
Wade Crane (.845) scoreless for the next four racks
upending Crane 11-9.
During the unusual firat rack of the Hike LeBron
(.821) and Larry Hubbart (.782) match, only two
balls were pocketed after twenty turns at the
table. LeBron then made a game winning combination
and promptly made the nine on the break. He never
turned back defeating Hubbart 11-7.
For the first five racks after losing the lag to
Bob Hunter (.825), Ray Martin's (.813)
participation in the match was limited to racking.
The spread was too much to overcome as Hunter
defeated Martin 11-9.
Buddy Hall (.938) missed just one ball in his 11-1
victory over CM Lee (.417). He also
Tuesday's high TPA and won an extra $100.00

Allen Hopkins (.933) never missed a shot while
overpowering Bill Dunaaore (.700) 11-2.
In his first major event, rookie TOM Kennedy (.839)
blanked veteran Terry Bell (.593) 11-0.
In one of the best played matches by both players,
Hike LeBron shot a .900 yet lost to David Howard
(.888) 9-11. While still ahead 9-8, Lebron was
afforded just two safeties.
Eighteen year old John Archer (.841) impressed many
during his 11-3 victory over Jin Mataya (.721).
Allen Hopkins (.800) never had a chance as Hike
LeBron (.939) pocketed every ball attempted in his
11-2 trouncing.
After fourteen racks, David Carver (.747) still
maintained a comfortable lead of 9-5 over Bill
Incardona (.816). Yet for the next six racks,
Incardona controlled the table preventing Carver
from pocketing a single ball. He was afforded just
three safeties and two kicks. Incardona won 11-9.
David Howard (.939) held JH Flowera (.519)
scoreless while running out ten of his eleven
opportunities.
How are they breaking? Earl Strickland (.878) and
Jose Parica (.807) collectively made a ball on the
break without scratching eighteen of the session's
nineteen break shots. Strickland won 11-8.
In a contest with the most exciting finish of the
tournament, Jimmy Reid (.833) held a 10-5 lead over
Jose Parica (.830). A scratch by Reid then allowed
Parica to reach six. While ahead 10-6, a kick by
Reid still didn't seem critical. It was. From that
point, Parica ran out the session to win 11-10.

Before the tournament began, the players were
treated to a complementary breakfast buffet, Pat
Fleming was employed as the tournament director, the
event was sanctioned by both the PBA and the WPBA
and their respective prize money breakdowns were
used. The men raced to eleven, the women to nine. In
the finals, the men raced to fifteen, the women to
eleven. The standard dress code demanded for a hotel
event was strictly adhered to due in part to the
harshness of the penalty. If a match was
"unnecessarily delayed due to a flagrant violation
of the dress code", a one game penalty would be
imposed! No penalties were imposed.
The tournament room housed four Gandy pool tables
covered with Granito Tournament 2000 cloth. The
cloth and balls were supplied by Joba Trading thus
providing excellent conditions for excellent play.
The lighting was the best that ha3 graced a pool
table. Designed and built by Bob Opsahl, they were
sold before the event began with an order for more
to be built. A pool table was set up in the atrium
of the hotel and used for exhibitions, specialty
contests and practicing. A practice schedule was
necessary so that everyone would have an opportunity
to practice before their match.
Columbia had never before been exposed to
professional pool tournaments but received it well.
Media coverage was more than anticipated thanks to
the efforts of public relatione man Barry Dubow. The
evening sessions as expected drew the largest
crowds, but Friday night posed an unforeseen
problem. Capacity crowds forced the staff to stop
selling tickets for there was no more room, not even
standing room!
Accu-Stats, for the first time and with much
success, utilized a video camera mounted in the
ceiling to monitor one of the tables for the entire

event. The matches were reviewed on TV by field
coordinator Dennis McGimpsey and scored with the
benefit of "fsst forward". The ability to review
critical situations several times made the video
camera an outstanding tool.
Steve Simpson from Paris, Illinois entertained us
with his uncanny knack for the "blow shot", his
ability to play shots by blowing the cue ball out of
his mouth instead of using a cue stick. Before the
finals, Grsdy Msthews also delighted us with not
only a fine pocket billiard exhibition but also with
some magical fire-eating!
Jean Balukas played in both divisions yet fared much
better in the women's. She defeated Kenniston,
Mayes, Villalpando, and Hoffman twice. Seventeen
year old Bonnie Hoffman was outstanding. She
defeated Olesenski, Jones, Bell, and Smith. Her two
losses were against Balukas.
Notable Matches (continued from page 3)
Buddy Hall (.940) proved that you can shoot a near
perfect set without running two racks in a row.
Hall pocketed 94 balls and committed 8ix errors
computing a .940 TPA much to the chagrin of victim
Bob Hunter (.837). Hall won 11-4.
Ray Martin (.953) poated the tournament high TPA
for a single session as both he and his opponent
Dick Lane (.833) never missed a ball. Martin won an
extra $100 for his achievement and the match 11-6.
In spite of a 0-6 disadvantage against Chris
MacDonald (.787), Buddy Hall (.919) won the next
eight games and eventually the match 11-8.
Buddy Hall (.950) won Friday's bonus $100 while
crushing David Howard (.607) 11-2.
Danny DiLiberto (.949) outplayed Efren Rayea (.737)
in a near perfect match with both players missing
only one ball apiece. DiLiberto won the match 11-3
and Saturday'a $100 bonus.
