A Spring Potpourri By Robert Grinnell KD7WNV, President

With Fleamarket behind us, March still saw two more of the significant events in the annual life of the Club: elections at the March meeting, and the Awards Banquet.

I am honored that you have elected me to a second term as President. On behalf of the Club, I want to thank the members of the outgoing Executive Board for their service, and welcome the members of the incoming Board. There is a good deal of continuity, with all officers reelected to their positions, in addition to the two trustees continuing in their terms. Hopefully, one may count that as a sign of confidence in how the Club is being led. We do, however, have an infusion of some “new blood” to the Board, with three new (or almost new) Trustees. Congratulations to Jim K7JGM, Gary KF7TBC, and John NU6A. We welcome your fresh perspectives.

A week after the elections, a large contingent of us packed a banquet room at the Old Spaghetti Factory for a delicious meal and evening of camaraderie, honoring exceptional members at our Awards Banquet. Thanks to the Membership Committee for stepping up to handle arrangements for the evening, and to the Awards Committed for their usual fine job of coordinating selection of the award recipients and running the evening’s program. Special thanks to our regal Master of Ceremonies, King TUT himself…er…Mitch NA7US (formerly N7TUT).

While on the subject of recognition, I want to make note of a publishing accomplishment by one of our members. You may recall the October, 2012 Relay article by Mike N7WA, describing his intrepid journey with fellow member Jim K7ND during last year’s Salmon Run. It was an attempt to activate most of the counties in eastern Washington as a mobile unit during the two‐day contest. With some rework for a broader audience, his account has just appeared as a feature article in the March/April issue of the ARRL’s National Contest Journal, as “Roll On, Columbia, Roll On — Salmon Run 2012.” Congratulations, Dink!

Looking ahead, our April program is on MESH networking. This is an exciting new technology that uses reprogrammed Wi‐Fi routers to create a self‐configuring broadband network operating on ham frequencies. This adaptation of commonly‐available hardware carries on a fine Ham tradition reaching back at least to the widespread practice of repurposing and modifying surplus military radios after World War II. MESH could conceivably be used in support of our Fleamarket or even Field Day operations, so come on out and learn about it.

Salvation Army – Construction Update By Michael Dinkelman N7WA

Since January, we’ve been told that the start of construction at the Salvation Army was imminent only to find no change when we arrive for

club meetings. Well, it looks like things will start happening soon. Apparently, the delay is the result of a much bigger deal that has been in the works and it looks like that deal will be of great benefit to the club and other groups that use the facility.

A couple of days ago, on the first of this month, the Salvation Army announced the sale of their Food Bank facility over near the airport. If you’ve ever helped out on the Postal Food Drive, you know the building. The proceeds from that sale will be used to purchase the vacant lot to the west of the Salvation Army building we currently meet in. The bad news is that we won’t ever have access to that lot for parking again. The good news is that a three story building will be going up. The lower floor will be a much larger food bank. The middle floor will be a shelter for the homeless community. The upper story will be a combination of meeting hall and small classrooms. What’s really cool is that one of those rooms will be ours for use as a Club Station! [Continued on Page 4]

APRIL MEETING PROGRAM TO FOCUS ON HSMM‐MESH

With Club Elections and the Fleamarket behind us, monthly programming will resume at the April meeting.

The topic for the April meeting will be HSMM‐MESH. Craig Baker, KF7LLA will speak and lead a team to do a hands‐

on HSMM‐MESH presentation. HSMM‐MESH is an effort to supply practical high speed digital

communication using HAM frequencies. HSMM‐MESH proponents in the greater Seattle area are in the process of developing a comprehensive network of stations that promises to provide near‐universal high speed data coverage for our community.

The implications for emergency communications are huge. The individual nodes are self‐sufficient, have low power demand and can operate reliably and practically on battery power in an emergency setting. They can be transported and set up quickly and easily.

You can well imagine how effective it could be to have reliable and practical high speed data services in an emergency setting. The full panoply of benefits provided by high speed data could be at the fingertips of teams organized to respond to an emergency. That could include a practical email system, web based information networks and servers, as well as full high speed internet access.

Come join us for this interesting and informative presentation.

M&K Radio Officer Report By Hal Goodell N7NW

Well you would think by the middle of April we could get up to our repeater site. Dang cold and wet weather is still preventing that from occurring. More snow on Tiger the last couple of days. Fortunately the two meter repeater continues to perform really well.

Unfortunately, not so for the 220 repeater. It has gone off the air and we will not know why until we can get back up there. Plans are to make a trip in the next week or so to see if the road is passable. The site internet is down again so I am unable to check the snow level at the moment.

Salvation Army – Construction… [Cont’d from Page 1]

This Club Station will be integrated into the Salvation Army’s emergency communications network (SATURN). There will even be room to place a small tower (something like a Glen Martin) on the roof so we can install better antennas (that vertical of ours just doesn’t do the job). This will be a big commitment for the Club but I can’t think of a better group to handle it. Of course, this is a much bigger construction effort than previously planned so it will take some time and we’ll be meeting within the mess of a construction project for the next 12 months. Fortunately, it’ll give us some time to do all the planning necessary to make the best use of our new space. Keep your fingers crossed and, if all goes well, we should be in our new digs, ready to go, by April 1st of 2014.

M&K FD’13: Planning Your Stay By Rita Danielson KD7CNU – ‘MOM’

Are you ready for the Mike & Key ARC family reunion otherwise known as Field Day? This year, as in years past, we will meet at beautiful Fort Flagler State Park on Marrowstone Island.

You have two lodging choices. The Wagon Wheel for RV and tent camping, will be available Monday June 17 through Monday June 24. See our Wagon Master to reserve your space. And for those of us who think that 'roughing it' is a Motel 6, we have Camp Wilson reserved Thursday, June 20th through Sunday June 23. If you want to be real adventurous you can stay at both places, the Wagon Wheel Monday‐‐Thursday and Camp Wilson Thursday‐‐Sunday and back to the Wagon Wheel, Sunday‐‐Monday.

Camp Wilson consists of three buildings, the main building with 6 bedrooms, 2 restrooms with showers, lounge/dining area and a full service kitchen. A smaller building across the road, consists of 4 bedrooms and two restrooms with showers. A recreation hall, which is used as a dining hall in wet weather completes Camp Wilson. Each of the bedrooms has twin beds or bunk beds, a dresser and some sort of closet. Electrical outlets in each room so you can recharge your radio batteries, while you're recharging your body's batteries over night.

At the Wagon Wheel you will be responsible for your own meals with the exception of the evening meals Friday and Saturday. This is when we have our wonderful BBQ potluck. The club will supply the burgers and hot dogs, buns and condiments, soda and water. You will supply the salads, side dishes and desserts. If the weather is a bit drippy, we will eat in the recreation hall at Camp Wilson.

For those staying in Camp Wilson, breakfast will be provided Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings by me at no expense to the club. Donations will be accepted, but are not expected. Each morning will be a different breakfast. You will be on your own for lunches and snacks.

Signup sheets for Camp Wilson will be available at the club general meetings. I will be taking your deposit of $10.00 per person/per night when you sign up, children included. Please make your check payable to Mike & Key ARC. Your deposit will be returned to you when you check in. Postal Food Drive – May 11 By Jim Etzwiler – KD7BAT

The Annual Letter Carriers Food Drive is the second weekend in May – and that is May 11th this year. This is a national event and the Salvation Army participates by accepting the food collected by Renton area Post Offices.

The food is usually in plastic bags and needs to be sorted, crated into plastic milk carriers, and stacked on pallets. There are a number of organizations that provide workers in this effort and it does take a fair number of people. We usually have a few Mike and Key members help out and more would be welcome.

Last year we had teams outside emptying bags and sorting. We had a second team assigned inside doing additional sorting.

Last year we worked from about 2PM to about 6PM but even an hour or two would be helpful. We processed about 30,000 pounds of food from the Postal Workers Food Drive.

The Salvation Army uses this event to “recharge” their food bank but they need help.

This event occurs at the Salvation Army’s food bank (206 S Tobin Street) near the Renton High School and by the Renton airport. As we get closer, I will post more up‐to‐date info on the Club reflector as I get it from the Salvation Army. If you want a personal email with details let me know at KD7BAT @ ARRL.NET.

Tower Crew Needed By Michael Dinkelman N7WA

Part of the service we try to provide to the Ham community is assisting those who are left behind after an Amateur Radio Operator has gone Silent Key. Last January, I was approached by a widow in the Renton Highlands who husband actually died a couple years ago.

She has already disposed of most of the equipment but still has a tower that needs to come down. She’s in no hurry, she isn’t trying to sell the house, so I told her it would be better to wait for better weather in the Spring.

It’s not a big project ‐ about 40’ of Rohn 25G, plus a small Yagi on top. It looks to be in pretty good condition though it isn’t properly guyed (small wire rope). It should be easy to take down after installing some temporary rope guys.

What I need is a crew. I am willing to do the climbing but I need ground crew.

(Another person to share the climbing wouldn’t hurt my feelings either.) This would be good experience for newbie’s because this is the same kind of tower we use at Field Day. I figure it shouldn’t take much longer than it takes us to take down a Field Day tower though, as I mentioned, we’ll want to put some guys up first.

My plan is to do this Saturday, June 1st. Please let me know if you can help. Many hands make for light work and you’ll be helping out a member of our Ham community.

Mary served the many aspects of Ham radio, all over the Pacific Northwest, from Novice to Extra. She was instrumental in having the ARRL Repeater directory published in a small format so it could easily fit into her purse, and the glove box of a vehicle.

Her first ARRL Board meeting in Newington, CT resulted in her receiving a ARRL necktie as a gift and her husband,Harry W7JWJ was sent out on the "Spousal Shopping tour" around Hartford CT. As I recall she gave the necktie away as a gift to a special visitor from China's BY1PK.

In one of her many travels she was able to present the Alaska Field Day Trophy to Vince Van Der Hyde WL7K (now K7VV) and the Juneau Amateur Radio Club at a early Fall meeting at WL7K's QTH out in the Mendenhall Valley of Juneau Alaska.

There will be a General Licensing Class on April 19th, 20th, and 21st . The book we will be using is the ARRL General Licensing Manual The Class will be at Tukwila Fire Station 51, 444 Andover Park East, Tukwila, 98188. The class room is on the south side of the building. The class starts Friday night April 19th, 7 to 9 PM Saturday April 20th 8 AM to 5 PM Sunday April 21st 8 AM to 2 PM with the test at 2 PM We will cover all the question in the General question pool. The General License will give you most of the privileges in the HF long distance bands.

This is great! The TAPR/ARRL Digital Communication Conference (DCC) is a tremendous opportunity for our region. This conference attracts some really great folks ‐ hopefully including you.

The Vancouver/Portland DCC was one of the most stimulating environments I've had the pleasure of experiencing. That weekend exposed me to an abundance of great ideas and powerful resources.

It would be perfect if we could assemble a tremendous turnout for this event. Selfishly, so that it might visit the Pacific Northwest again really soon. Less selfishly, because more of us would be cross pollinated with energy and ideas for our next burst of NW ham creativity.

The timing of this with our recent progress on digital ham radio in the NW couldn't be better. Add DCC and the Summer Gathering (below) into your calendars. I'll see you there September 20‐22.

The Summer Gathering will be held in North Bend at Valley Camp the weekend of September 6,7 and 8 just after Labor Day. We discussed canceling the 2013 Summer Gathering to avoid potentially diluting attendance at the DCC. Due to a groundswell of popular demand we will do both.

The Summer Gathering is one of the premier ham radio events in the NW. The weather is usually the best of the year. You can stay in dorms, camp or RV spaces are available. Great ideas and tremendous minds will assemble to learn, teach and share.

The Summer Gathering focus continues to be APRS (the Automatic Packet/Position Reporting System). At the same time, we will be discussing moving APRS data across an ever increasing variety of networks, software and amazing, powerful, tiny platforms now available to us.

M&K FM’13: “Thanks Everybody for your Hard Work.” –Diane Dinkelman KB7DNE The Fleamarket has seen another year and so have I. I have been doing Registration for twenty years now as Chairman and another two or three year as a Registration Volunteer. I have had people come and

go. Some have moved away, some left because of age and some because of illness and yes some have passed on from this world. But while they were volunteering for Registration they came back year after year, as does my current crew.

This year we had some problems and were short‐handed. Jess Vaughn got married and moved to Texas. Wayne Moddison K6DOW was too ill to help out even though he did come by to see how we were doing. Guy Molinari N7ZG offered to help this year— thank‐you Guy. We still needed another volunteer. Out of the blue Atsushi Sasaki W7KN decided that he was going to help this year and came all the way from Japan. He said that “He would be honored to work for Registration”. Wow! This was great news, even though my regulars volunteered to double up to get us through the two days. They worked very hard as‐is and Atsushi helping this year was what we needed. Atsushi It was a honor to have you help us this year.

Jim Christiansen K7ND worked the Pallet Gate; a seemingly menial task which he graciously does every year for us. Guy N7ZG covered Jim’s K7ND break and worked at Registration handing out packets. This was his first year; without him and Atsushi, Sally Martin would be running packets out to our Sellers alone. That is a rough job for one person to do with the long lines we get at opening. Rusty Etzwiler offered to help cover the Gold Gate while Wayne K6DOW was ill; helping out Teresa Vanghn AD7CTU. Teresa ADCTU worked longer hours at the Gold Gate so that Rusty could leave early and set up her table. Jim Etzwiler KD7BAT was short‐handed at times when it got real busy inside Registration. He got the packets to our outside volunteers so that they could in turn hand them to our Sellers thus keeping that line moving. Sometimes I can help out but there are too many things happening that I have to attend to.

Susan Fleming my daughter ran the go‐cart between Registration, the Gold Gate and the Orange Gate where Corrine, my Granddaughter and Michelle Baskett WA7PVE were the first to greet and guided our Sellers to Registration. Vanndy Eam N7EAM came out later to cover breaks on Friday and on Saturday he helped at Registration.

All went well and by 8:30 AM we got everyone in to the Event. At 9AM the doors were opened for the Buyers. Between 9AM and 2:30PM Saturday, we had a nice break before Load Out. I walked around and talked to some of our customers, and then I had a nice

lunch with my husband Mike N7WA who helps me put out all the fires that affects Registration during the event. He also manages to find some fires to put out that don’t affect Registration.

We ate at the Hospitality spot that Michelle Cross WB7AYU runs. The food was good and the atmosphere was pleasant. Later we went out to our designated spots for Load Out. This gave me another chance to talk to our Seller/Helpers.

Our Customers were full of praises with “Another Good Year” and “Looking Forward to Next Year”. These are the things that make it all worthwhile. Well we made it and got everyone smoothly out in a timely manner

We had another bonus this year— the weather was good. Last but not least was the Chinese dinner that Hal Goodell N7NW sets up for us each year with the help of Ivy Nelson‐Groves WA7IVY collecting the money

and handing out the tickets. Thank‐you Registration Crew and special thanks to David Lee KC7FSR for handing out the Volunteer badges before the Gold Gate was opened on Friday so

that we could have them available early for our volunteers. Thanks to all the volunteers for making this Fleamarket the great Event that it always is. “Until next year.” –Diane KB7DNE

This a.m. we received word that Mary Lewis, W7QGP, has become a Silent Key. Mary was very involved in the ARRL at the division and section levels. She was an Elmer to many of us. Gary Lewis, WA7BBJ, Mary's son, has provided the following QST

QST QST QST to all Amateur Radio Operators. It is with great sorrow that I must announce at this time, the passing of MARY LEWIS, W7QGP on March 12th 2013. Mary’s love of life and Ham Radio lead her to serve the Ham Radio community over the years as an:

ARRL assistant Section Manager, and as a ARRL Affiliated Club Coordinator for Western Washington.

Past ARRL Director Northwestern Division, Section Communications Manager for Washington and Section Manager for Western Washington.

Mary was also a Life member of the American Radio Relay League and the Quarter Century Wireless Association. She was also a member of Quarter Century Wireless Woman and Young Ladies Radio League.

Retired from Broadcasting and a member of “The Society of Broadcast Engineers”.

Mary was a member of the Western Washington DX Club, North Seattle Amateur Club, Mike & Key Amateur Radio Club and the Mount Baker Amateur Radio Club.

Mary and her husband Harry were part of the Original Founding Members that helped create the Western Washington Amateur Radio Traffic System. A traffic handling system still in use today by many Amateur Radio Operators.

Mary is survived by her husband Harry W7JWJ, her daughter Diana K7ETY, and her son Gary WA7BBJ. As well as, 4 Grandchildren, and 3 Great Grandchildren.

Mary will be missed by the Ham Radio Community, her family and friends. Memorial services for Mary will be announced later when the details are finalized.

The family is requesting that you do not send flowers. Cards can be sent to: Harry W. Lewis PO Box 5204 Lacy WA 98509‐5204.

Any cash donations received will go toward the purchase of an ARRL Diamond Terrace Memorial Brick to remember Mary Lewis W7QGP as a Silent Key.

The impact Mary had on us and our hobby will not be forgotten and she will be missed. Please take a few minutes to pass condolences to the Lewis family.

Meeting was called to order at 10:00 am by the President, Robert KD7WNV.

Pledge of Allegiance. Announcements: The Mike and Key ARC is affiliated with the ARRL, which

members are encouraged to join. Everyone, including visitors, should sign the rosters. Visitors are reminded not to vote on membership matters.

Member Introductions

Officer Reports: President: Robert KD7WNV: His report was in the relay. Robert thanked

everyone for their work at the flea market. Robert has the public service booklets; see him if you need some copies.

Secretary: Ivy WA7IVY: She forgot the tape recorder, so please state your name and call when you make a motion or second it today.

Treasurer: Dave KB7PSN: The club’s books are in good order. Still working on the Flea Market books.

Activities Manager: George AE7G: Today we will be holding our Annual Officer Elections.

Chairman of the Board: Daniel KLWM: The parking lot across the street has been closed for environmental issues. We will publish a map of available parking areas, and work on other solutions for the parking situation.

Radio Officer: Hal N7NW: The repeater is doing well. The camera at the repeater site is operational now.

Quorum present. A motion was made to approve the minutes of the previous meeting as printed in the Relay was made by Gil W7GIL, seconded by Sam N7RHE. Motion passed.

month we will probably have to use the side entrance. Education: John NU6A: John shared some additional training classes. These

will be submitted for inclusion on the website. Public Service: Robert ND7WNV: Robert thanks those who helped with

putting the Public Service booklet together. Technical and Special Interest: Gil W7GIL: no report.

Other Committees: VE Exams: Scott AG7T: (17) people attended exams last month, with (8)

Technicians; (5) Generals; and (1) Extra licenses awarded. There were (32) candidates at the Flea Market with (13) Technician; (10) Generals and (4) Extras licenses were awarded,

Logo: Jim N7MU: Jim mentioned that a lot of folks have received logo wear, please contact him if you would like some logo apparel. Dan mentioned had badges for members who had ordered them.

Membership: Gary KG7KU: Kathy KB7QMO introduced the members of the committee and mentioned that we could always use more folks.

Awards Banquet: Kathy KB7QMO: Next Saturday will be the Awards Banquet and today will be the last day to buy a ticket for the event. It starts at 5:30, and appetizers will be available at that time; plenty of parking is available.

By Laws Review: Dave KB7PSN: A final copy of revised by‐laws has been completed. It will be submitted to the April board meeting before it is submitted to the general membership.

Flea Market: Hal N7NW/Mike N7WA: We had a great Flea Market last weekend – the club’s 32

nd Flea Market. Hal thanked Mike and Diane for all

of the behind‐the‐scenes work they do in preparation for the Flea Market.

Hal also thanked the chairs and their crews for their hard work. Attendance was down a little because of the sunny weather.

Field Day: Ivy WA7IVY: 97 days to Field Day setup. We have had one position open up for this year’s food chair. Rita volunteered for Food Chair. She also reported that the 2014 Barracks reservations have been sent in.

repeater. Tim K7ANE asked for some help with setting up APRS. John NU6A reported that there was someone who was checking doors of cars

in the parking lot at the Flea Market. Use this as a cautionary tale to make sure that your car doors are locked and no valuables are visible.

Michelle WA7PVE made mention of a TV show on “Last Man Standing” with

Tim Allen that features ham radio. The next Mike & Key Board meeting will be on the first Tuesday of the month,

April 2nd at 7:30 pm at the Salvation Army in Renton. The next Mike & Key General Membership meeting will be on the third

Saturday of the month, April 20th at 10:00am at the Salvation Army in Renton.

He is converting the Public Service Pamphlet information into websites.

Hal N7NW suggested that we have a presentation by the bylaws committee to help facilitate understanding of the proposed changes. Membership – Kathy KB7QMO: The Banquet went very well. The committee is looking for their next project. Field Day – Ivy WA7IVY: Eighty days till Field Day Setup. Most of the positions are set at this point, but Ivy would like to know if any club member would be interested in taking over the 15 meter station at this year’s Field Day. Flea Market – HAL N7NW and Mike N7WA: March 8, 2014. The new lease agreement from the “Washington State Fair Events Center” has been received by Hal. They want the first deposit on April 12, 2013, with the second deposit on January 30, 2014. If anyone has any suggestions or comments, please send them to Hal or Mike. Logo – Daniel KL7WM: no report. Four new books have arrived for the Club Library. Based on suggestions from the members, we’ve acquired the ARRL’s excellent set of three books on the basics of electronics, radio and antennas, along with the newest ARRL book on Software-Defined Radio (SDR). These four new books will be available to checkout at the general meeting in May:

The Basic Electronics book discusses the basics of electricity, electronics, and simple circuits. Chapters cover components, DC and AC electrical circuit concepts, basic analog and digital circuits, series and parallel circuits, problem solving and applied math (by hand and calculator), frequency, active devices, semiconductors and integrated circuits. The book also takes a look back at vacuum tubes and their applications. A good glossary of electric and electronic terms is also included.

Basic Radio looks at the development of radio from the simplest crystal sets, early simple receivers through modern superheterodyne receivers. It then looks at the parallel development of transmitters, from earliest CW sets through the evolution of voice transmission from AM to SSB. Chapters also cover power amplification, wave propagation, transmitting and receiving antennas, radiolocation and radionavigation systems, and another glossary of relevant terms. The author also looks into his crystal ball to see what the future might hold. The appendix includes several build-it-yourself projects.

The third book in the series, Basic Antennas, looks at a wide range of communications antennas, starting with the venerable diplole, and continues through both verticals and horizontals, arrays, surface reflector antennas, yagis and log periodics, and loops. Also discussed are microwave and vehicle-mounted antennas. The author discusses antenna measurements and modeling, using EZNEC software. Instructions for some easy-to-build antennas are also included.

The Software Defined Radio publication is really more of a pamphlet than a book, and thus somewhat disappointing. It discusses the application of digital electronics and the road that has led to this new metamorphosis of radio and computers. However, it covers the basic concepts and suggests where the future of this new technology may take amateur radio.
