On Thursday, after lunch, we heard from Dr. Jacqueline Pevny. Dr. Pevny discussed the many medications often given

to patients with Alzheimer’s disease or related neurocognitive disorders, and outlined the risks of these medications

versus the benefits. Notably, she said “not every condition needs a pill”, as she presented the virtues of behavioral

approaches versus medications.

On Thursday afternoon, Dr. Mark Brody, of Brain Matters Research in Delray Beach, talked about the exciting

current approaches and numerous clinical trials that aim to modify these diseases and improve quality of life for

Friday morning, we launched the day with a presentation on the many aspects of Alzheimer’s Community Care’s innovative model of care that addresses the

needs of both patient and caregiver. The Family Nurse Consultant Program, Specialized Adult Day Centers, Electronic Locator Bracelet program for those at

risk to wander, Education for families and health care professionals, Case Management linking families with available financial resources, our 24-hour Crisis Line,

and finally, Advocacy! Our vital wraparound service, our Support Groups were also discussed by one of our extraordinary volunteers who facilitates TWO

support group meetings every week!

More than 50 sponsors and exhibitors displayed their products and services, and attendees had three times each day to visit and interact with these

professionals, without missing any of the educational sessions!

Mid-day, Dr. Sathya Puthanveettil, of Scripps Florida in Jupiter, told about exciting research under way at Scripps aimed at restoring “lost” memory! As Dr.

Puthanveettil explained, these studies are not yet ready for human trial, but results are very promising and will hopefully lead to clinical trials in the near future.

Dr. James Galvin presented the Keynote address on Friday afternoon. Dr. Galvin is a nationally-recognized expert in research on Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy

body disease. We are so fortunate that Dr. Galvin came to Florida in 2015, taking the lead in developing research and clinical trial programs at Florida Atlantic

University in Boca Raton. Dr. Galvin inspired us with new theories in the prevention of Alzheimer’s and related neurocognitive disorders by explaining that

these diseases result from numerous factors. He explained that this gives us the opportunity to consider a variety of protective lifestyle strategies, such as:

not smoking

controlling high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol

staying socially active and engaged

staying physically active

challenging yourself to learn new things

eating a diet high in fruits and vegetables, high omega-3 fish (tuna, salmon, mackerel, sardines), and LOW in red meat

preventing head injury by wearing seatbelts in cars and helmets on bicycles and motorcycles

getting enough “dream” (rapid eye movement) sleep! The brain “cleans itself” during this restorative sleep, minimizing the buildup of

beta-amyloid protein.

All Conference attendees were encouraged to give their feedback on evaluation forms, and we have read all of them! These comments are helping us plan next

year’s Conference!

Along with scores of family caregivers, over 100 health care professionals attended each day!

Again this year, a very generous donor made it possible for us to offer scholarships to many caregivers attending the Conference.

Did you miss the Conference? Please watch for news of next year’s Conference as we will announce the 2018 dates in the near future, and prepare to mark your calendars!
