If you want to get brutally strong and powerful as well as having the look of thick, dense
muscle then it’s time to train Underground.
Many decades and even centuries ago the greatest lifters and most dominant athletes
looked strong AND actually were brutally strong! They were what we would call “All
Show and ALL Go!”
Or, we can simply
call this “Functional
Strength”. This is the
type of strength you
develop while
training at The
Underground, it
doesn’t happen with
the typical workouts
you see or experience
in a regular gym.
Nowadays too many athletes look strong but can’t perform with high levels of
strength and power. This is what happens when you follow pretty workouts that revolve
around high tech equipment and wimpy workouts.
As an athlete, we BOTH know that we must be able to maintain out strength, power and
conditioning through an entire match or game, regardless of our sport of choice.

The athletes who developed “Functional Strength” did NOT train with machines or
go on long, slow distance runs.
Instead, they lifted stones, heavy thick handled barbells with two hands and one hand,
heavy kettlebells, climbed rope, pressed heavy thick handle dumbbells plus many more
amazing feats of strength!
They also trained regularly, almost daily. Often times their job required them to perform
manual labor which served as a method of conditioning and improving overall strength.
Now, depending on how often you train as an athlete in your sport (i.e. wrestling skills,
football skills, basketball drills, etc), and how intense your workouts are, this will
determine how much Underground
training you do. The more you train in
sport, the less Underground training
you’ll perform.
Usually, our athletes train 2 - 3 x
week in the off season if they attend
sport training an extra 2 - 3 x week.
There are times of the year where
we have athletes training 5 x week,
this is if they do NO extra sport training.
Remember, YOU reap the rewards of our training through proper rest and
nutrition. Part of your discipline will be resting when you may really want to train.
Discipline means doing what you have to do and what is best for you, not what you want
to do! What you want to do has nothing to do with what is best for you.

At The Underground Strength Gym you will be educated on what to do you are
NOT under our guidance to increase your success in your physical and mental
abilities.
Getting back to these strongmen from the early 1900’s, they all had a common goal in
mind and that was to get extremely strong and powerful. In turn they all built physiques
that are still held with the highest esteem today. Wrestling, especially Greco Roman
wrestling was a large part of their training back in the day as it developed athleticism and
strength that would improve their ability to lift heavier weights and odd objects.
Above, George Hackenschmidt - known as the 'Russian Lion', was a brutal
wrestler and regularly used Russian Kettlebells to develop dominating strength,
power and endurance!

Sumo Wrestling training with throws and hip tosses was a huge event in the olden days,
and sometimes these wrestling matches would go on for more than 1 day with the same
two athletes! Talk about having high endurance, conditioning and mental toughness!
I have used sumo style drills with my Football athletes to teach them handfighting drills,
how to move their body efficiently rather just using brute force. We have used tires of all
sizes to train the body from all angles while pushing then, pulling them, throwing them
and wrestling them.
Let’s take a look at some of the tools and
methods you will be using and experiencing
while training at The Underground Strength
Gym in Edison, NJ.
Let me preface this by letting you know
that the coaches at The Underground
Strength Gym are Experts.
This style of training should NOT be
performed under a parent or athletic
coach who does not understand the science
behind properly organizing and creating
an athletic training program. Doing so can very likely lead to injury.
I must also warn you regarding the commitment and intensity that will be required
of you: This training takes guts and a no fear attitude! You must be willing to push
yourself and challenge yourself with heavy weights and odd objects. You’ll be sore in
places you never felt before but the rewards will also be well worth your sweat!

The Underground Strength Gym Experience
Before I move forward and give you insight into what you will experience here as an
athlete, I want to emphasize something critical, and that is the fact that myself and my
Coaches genuinely care for your success as a person, not just an athlete.
You will not only transform yourself physically, but you will also build character as
you go through the many physical and mental challenges here at The Underground
Strength Gym.
You will be surrounded by highly motivated athletes, 100% of the time, because we
screen our potential clients and their parents before accepting them into out
program. Excellence is expected in everything you do from here on out, mediocrity
will be rejected. So bring your “A” Game, we’ll accept nothing less of you!
Sandbag Training – Ripping sandbags off the ground, rowing, pressing, pushing, pulling
and throwing. The sandbags will develop full body strength, power and conditioning
unlike ever before. A 75 lb bag makes a 150 lb barbell feel like chump change!

Tires – I’ve seen and heard of parents getting tractor tires in their backyard for their son
to use for tire flipping which is NOT to be used for just anyone. The back and legs must
be physically ready, the arms must be extremely strong. If the back rounds out or the tire

places too much pressure on the biceps a SERIOUS injury can occur, potentially
sidelining the athlete for an entire season or longer.
At The Underground Strength Gym you will be prepped with specialized program to
build you from a beginner lifter to intermediate and advanced. Everything we do is based
on real world experience and science.
An uneducated and inexperienced parent or coach is basing their knowledge on
something they may have read in a magazine or from the internet which is often times
incorrect and unsafe information!

Tire Flipping, when performed correctly, will develop lower body strength, full body
power and mental toughness.
Bodyweight Training - Gymnasts aren’t built like Greek Statues by accident. They
are also some of the most agile, coordinated and powerful athletes on the planet. You can
expect to train and practice countless bodyweight movements which will also be required
practice on your own, when you are NOT at The Underground.

Odd Objects - You can also expect to train with some of the strangest, unyieldly objects
you have ever come across: tree logs, anvils, stones of all shapes and sizes, thick handles
dumbbells and various rope climbing apparatuses.
The training with odd objects will develop strength in areas of your body you never knew
existed, yet they will also improve athleticism and mental toughness, two critical traits of
athletic champions.
