DAY 6 – THE CAPE WINELANDS: After breakfast at the hotel, we depart for the Cape Winelands, a region famous for many legendary Cape wines and vineyards with grapes that have been grown for hundreds of years. Its classic Cape-Dutch homesteads, mountainous surrounds, grand heritage, and sumptuous restaurants have earned the cape Winelands the right to call itself South Africa’s culinary capital. Apart form a wide choice of wine estate cellars lined with top-class wines, visitors will discover a variety of locally produced cheeses, olives, export-quality fruit and organic produce to sample and buy. Today we will have wine tastings at Waterford Estate (with chocolate as well!) and Spier, as well as tour the historic town of Stellenbosch, where we will have lunch included. Return to the hotel with time to freshen up before we are transferred to the picturesque Karibu Restaurant for an amazing dining experience. Overnight at the hotel. (B, L, D)

DAY 7 – CAPE TOWN: After breakfast, your day is at leisure to enjoy Cape Town. There will be optional tours to Robben Island in Table Bay or a tour of the Cape townships on the “Cape Care Route.” Tonight we gather again to have dinner at the Quay 4 Restaurant for dinner prior to returning to our hotel for overnight. (B, D)

DAY 8 – SAFARI: We check out of our hotel after breakfast and head for Cape Town International Airport and our flight to Hoedspruit Airport. From there, we will be met by our local host and transferred to the Makalali Private Game Lodge. Makalali means “place of rest” and you will be quite pleased with the accommodations, especially the varied dining experiences. This afternoon, we will have tea and coffee at the camp before heading out for game activity before returning to the hotel for dinner and overnight. (B, D) Hotel website: http://aha.co.za/makalali/

DAY 9 – MAKALALI GAME LODGE: Early wake-up today with tea and coffee before we head out on a morning game drive. Since this is a Big Five reserve, seeing lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo are possible over our two-day safari here. While seeing big game is always exhilarating, there are many other small species that are also captivating, and bird enthusiasts will be delighted at numerous species of birds recorded on the reserve. Halfway through the game drive, there’s a stop for hot drinks and snacks, before returning to the lodge for breakfast. The rest of the morning is at leisure. In the afternoon, everyone gathers for a decadent high tea, followed by an afternoon game drive. En route, you’ll stop for a sundowner drink and will have a chance to stretch your legs as you watch the sun set over the distant peaks of the Drakensberg Mountains. As darkness falls, the nocturnal animals of the bush come out. The skilled tracker will scan the landscape using a spotlight, which illuminates animals’ eyes. We return to the lodge around 7 pm for a sumptuous dinner. Overnight at the lodge. (B, L, D)

DAY 10 – MAKALALI GAME LODGE: Today will follow the same routine as the previous day. (B, L, D)
