SPECIAL OLYMPICS CARROLL

COUNTY (SOCR)

Special Olympics provides year-round sports for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Sport opportunities include basketball, skiing, snowshoeing, track and field, swimming, softball, bocce, equestrian, kayaking, golf, soccer, power lifting and bowling. Athletes must have a current Special Olympics medical form, and must be 7 years old to train and 8 to compete. Special Olympics also provides a young athlete program serving children from age 2-7 years that pro-motes the development of gross motor skills. For additional information, contact Debbie Gemmill or Abby Gruber at Carroll County Recreation & Parks, 410-386-2103 or email [email protected]; or for equestrian information contact Peggie Roland at [email protected]. SOCR Alpine Skiing and Snowshoeing The SOCR winter program offers both Alpine (downhill) skiing and Snowshoe-ing. Alpine skiing is a demanding sport, and athletes will benefit by being in good physical condition to compete successfully and safely. Alpine skiing re-quires, in addition to a basic combination of endurance and strength, a high capacity of quickness and action/reaction endurance. Snowshoeing is quickly becoming a favorite for outdoor winter activities. Combining aerobic activity with ease of walking over snow without sinking in, snowshoeing is an activity for all ages. Through proper training, our athletes improve their physical, psychologi-cal and mental efficiency. Completion will be Winter Games held at Ski White-tail. There is no cost to the athlete to participate in the program. Equipment rentals and lift tickets are provided for all athletes for all State competitions. However, we do offer additional on-snow training at Ski Liberty when weather permits at the expense of each participating athlete. Dry Land training is Satur-days 12/1-2/23, 9–10:30am at Carroll Springs School, 495 S. Center Street, Westminster. Coach: TBD SOCR Athletics (Track and Field) Practices are Saturdays 2/16–4/24, 9–10:30am at Carroll Springs School, 495 S.
