Chocolate
Presentation Outline INTRODUCTION
Research Question: Should the government make chocolate illegal?
Thesis: The government should make chocolate illegal for young
children because it is addictive, harms health, and will lead to increased
costs of the health care system.
BODY
Counter-arguments (Dary, Smith)
Supporting arguments/ Support with examples (McKenzie)
CONCLUSION
Research shows that eating too much chocolate
• creates health problems,
• can lead to addiction, and
• causes health costs to increase.
The
Research
Question
Should the government make
chocolate illegal?
The Thesis Statement
The government should make chocolate
illegal for young children because it is
addictive, harms health, and will lead to
increased costs of the health care
system.
The Counter Argument
Chocolate contributes to good health
(antioxidants) (Dary 45)
It makes people feel good (endorphins)
(Smith 121)
It can help you live longer (Smith 122)
It can lower blood pressure (Dary 45)
The Supporting Arguments
Chocolate is addictive
It works like some drugs (nicotine)
It contributes to health problems
Health problems cost money
(McKenzie et al 67)
The first
support
Medical studies show that chocolate works just
like some drugs and causes craving for more.
It is addictive and needs to be controlled
(McKenzie et al. 67) .
An example
Some studies have shown that the health problems
caused by eating chocolate are similar to smoking.
Smoking is now banned in most public places. So
eating chocolate should be restricted, too.
The second
support
Furthermore, eating chocolate causes health
problems such as obesity, diabetes, high
cholesterol, and heart disease. These are all
real problems that governments should control
(McKenzie et al. 89).
The third
support
If no action is taken, more people will need
hospital treatment to cure problems.
Health care costs will increase and more
hospitals will need to be built (McKenzie et al.
90).
Concluding
Arguments
“The Government is responsible for protecting
its citizens from harmful substances.
Most of the evidence shows that chocolate is
harmful, especially for younger children.”
Conclusion
Research shows that eating too much chocolate
• creates health problems,
• can lead to addiction, and
• causes health costs to increase.
Therefore the best way to reduce the negative effects of chocolate on children is for the government to make it illegal for children under the age of 5.
