• A veteran is any person who has served or is still serving in the Armed Forces.

Who are Veterans?

• Remember, veterans are people who are serving or have served in the military in times of war or peace. There are over 21 million living veterans.

What is Veterans Day?

• As the video explains, November 11th became a legal holiday called Armistice Day in 1938. It was created to honor veterans of World War I.

• This holiday was renamed “Veterans Day” in 1954. Today November 11th is observed to honor and remember ALL veterans. Those who serve or served our country during times of war and times of peace.

Why Celebrate Veterans Day?

• The men and women in the Armed Forces take responsibility for our freedom. They make many sacrifices and risk their own lives to keep us safe. We celebrate to show them our respect.

Celebrating Veterans Day

• Parades and special ceremonies are held to honor veterans.

• People visit cemeteries to honor loved ones who served our country.

• People visit memorial sites to honor veterans. Pictured below: Memorials in Washington D.C. for the Vietnam War and World War II.

Celebrating Veterans Day

• People wear small flowers called “poppies” on their shirts. These poppies look like the flowers on the WWI battlefields.
