The night crowd at Perkins was some-what reserved except for one ani-

mated group in a booth by the door Thatwas us and there was a certain excite-ment in the air Jeff and Sue EricksonPerry Phillips and I were getting to knoweach other better before setting out onFaith the Ericksons 39-foot FairweatherMariner docked at Barkers Island Marinain Superior Wisconsin Actually I wasthe only stranger as Perry Jeff and Suehad sailed together in the Caribbean theprevious winter We were in Superior toembark on an American SailingAssociation Advanced Coastal Cruisingcourse (ASA 106) This advanced sailingclass is intended for experienced sailorswho own their own boats or have bare-boat charter experience It introduces anddevelops skills such as voyage planningnight sailing piloting dead-reckoningGPS and radar navigation spinnakeroperations troubleshooting and casualtyprocedures We had no idea sitting at that

late-night Perkins table that we wouldfulfill all of the ASA requirements andthen some over the next five days

Day 1 We arose at 730 AM (thatsseven bells in the morning watch foryou nautical junkies) Breakfast was onthe fly as we tackled the long list of pre-sail tasks under the supervision ofCaptain Thom Burns of NorthernBreezes Sailing School The morningwas a blur of activity to get the boatprepped watered fueled provisionedand rigged for crossing Lake Superiorand soon it was time for lunch We droveinto town and stopped at the Anchor Barin Superior The menu was mainly burg-ers and fresh-cut fries the deacutecor was ablend of northwoods dive and antiqueshop and the food was excellent Wemarveled at how the two employeeshandled the lunch rush including cook-ing and tending bar People watchingwas entertaining as the diners rangedfrom power-lunching suits to regularswho look liked theyd be attached totheir barstools for awhile I highly rec-ommend the cashew burger No its notsome vegetarian concoction made from

nuts and tofu its a real beef hamburgerwith cashews on top and its delicious

We returned to Faith finished somelast-minute preparations and left the dockat 4 PM with Isle Royale National Parkas our destination Before leavingBarkers Island we decided to top off thefuel and empty out the holding tank justto be safe The trainee at the fuel dockseemed to have some difficulty getting asuction on the holding tank We didnt gettoo concerned since pumpouts are such aroutine task done by a simple vacuumsystem What could possibly go wrongWe would soon regret not paying closerattention

We motored out of the SuperiorEntry and headed northeast across the biglake with Windigo dock at the southernend of Isle Royale set into the GPS 145miles away The wind was light and fromthe northeast so we motored across thelake all night and into the followingmorning I hate motoring I really dontwant to talk about it

The overnight passage was unevent-ful from a shiphandling and navigationstandpoint Seas were calm shippingtraffic was light and the watch routine

went smoothly During the entire north-bound voyage however the head washard to operate Now we were well out inthe middle of Lake Superior and it wasgetting worse It was more than just fric-tion that a little lubrication would fix Nothis was genuine resistance against thepump handle perhaps backpressure gen-erated by a blockage somewhere down-stream A little troubleshooting confirmedour fears The holding tank was com-pletely full the vent was clogged pre-sumably with waste and the tank waspressurized It seemed that our fuel docktrainee at Barkers Island didnt get a goodsuction on the holding tank and not onlydidnt remove the waste but compoundedthe problem by adding backflush rinsewater that also wasnt pumped Initialrepair efforts were met with a steadystream of brown water Ill leave the restof the descriptions to the readers imagi-nation We were eventually able to ventand contain the overflowing contents andif any Coast Guard officials are readingthis not a drop went overboard I swearThis was certainly advanced cruising butI didnt remember reading about actualhead casualties on the ASA skills list

Day 2 The wind finally picked upand shifted into the east in the afternoonof the second day and we enthusiasticallyraised the sails The motor finally fellsilent after running almost around the

clock (at least our batteries were charged)and Faith heeled over and put on a burstof speed We quickly closed the gap toIsle Royale and arrived at Windigo Dockat 7 PM after a 27-hour passage Ofcourse the service dock was closed forthe night so our holding tank wouldremain full until the next dayFortunately Windigo has modern bath-rooms with running water and flush toi-lets We were tired and a bit frustrated atthe amount of motoring we had to endurebut were happy to finish off the passagewith a brisk reach and had a strong senseof accomplishment at having safelycrossed the lake We had a hot meal goodconversation and the night was capped bya stunning sunset over WashingtonHarbor

Day 3 We slept in and rested a biton Isle Royale The day was as good as itgets in the northern summer sunny and75 F with just enough of a breeze to keepthe bugs off the dock Windigo is a beau-tiful and interesting spot and we playedtourist for most of the morning The dockis at the end of a long natural harbor andwas the headquarters of the Wendigo (sic)Mining Company from 1890-92 Thelocation briefly supported a year-roundcommunity of 135 people but a workabledeposit of copper was never found andthe mine quickly failed In the early1900s the area was a private huntingretreat for Duluth businessmen Todays

site now hosts a small store and a verynice visitors center with friendly rangersand the original Fresnel lens from theRock of Ages Lighthouse There are sev-eral hiking trails including a short naturewalk that goes through a small fenced-inarea designed to keep moose out The dif-ference in height density and variety ofplants on either side of this fence is quitedramatic evidence of how much vegeta-tion these creatures consume Wild rasp-berries and thimbleberries were plentifuland we picked them right from the trail aswe walked along Following our hike wehad a hot shower then moved Faith overto the fuel dock to get the head pumpedout We warned them that we wereabsolutely full although the NationalPark staff were unflappable It sure was-nt the first time theyve had a cruisingboat show up with a bursting holdingtank We left Windigo from the fuel dockat 130 PM headed for Grand Marais onMinnesotas North Shore This was to beour shortest leg of only 50 nauticalmiles Winds were 15-25 knots from thewest and we flew along under double-reefed main and staysail The wavesgradually grew to 6-8 feet but seemedmuch bigger after dark It was all prettyinteresting and even a bit challengingLittle did we know that it was about to geteven more exciting

Nobody was particularly hungry fordinner and the boats motion would havemade cooking difficult The five of us

shared a large bag of nacho cheeseDoritos in the cockpit as we plowed onthrough the seas Perry went down belowat about 9 PM to plot our position andmake the half-hourly log entry Thereswater down here rang up from the darkcabin Lovely Everyone scrambled toinvestigate and confirmed that there wereindeed several gallons of water at the bot-tom of the companionway ladder Thewater seemed to be coming from the bat-tery compartment under the starboardquarter berth which was higher than thecabin sole Water near an electrical powersource this could be fun Sue Jeff andThom stayed topside to operate the boatwhile Perry and I began to track down theleak(s) below decks I guess this wasmore of the advanced part of AdvancedCoastal Cruising Did Thom plan all thisI wondered Perry and I simultaneouslysearched for the leak and cleaned up thewater which by now had mixed withbilge and engine compartment mung tocreate an oily stinky mess We both gotan overdose and stayed down too longPerry went up first and was immediatelysick over the side I was extremelyqueasy but hung on to my Doritos Westill hadnt found the leak and were run-ning out of places to look Finally anabandoned through-hull in the starboardlazarette was discovered to be the sourceof the water We couldnt figure out whatthe fitting was used for but it was quick-

ly plugged The crisis was over and wereturned the rest of the unwanted waterback to the lake as Jeff and Sue addedanother maintenance and repair item totheir growing To Do list I washed myhands several times but couldnt com-pletely remove the smell and feel of themung water Sitting on the windwardcockpit coaming only the fresh breeze inmy face kept me from feeding the fish

During a less-than-perfect tack laterthat night the staysail sheets fouled eachother and we couldnt free the tangle fromthe cockpit The wind was building any-way so Captain Thom ordered the saildropped completely The storm sail washanked on the stay rather than on a rollerfurler so some-body would haveto go up on theheaving deck inthe dark to get itdown Perry and Ivolunteered wellaware that anighttime falloverboard into thecold rough watercould be fatalWe had jacklinesrun on either sideof the deck forthis exact situa-tion and the boatwas well

equipped with harnesses and double teth-ers Up we went on deck to lower thestuck staysail I clipped the longer of thetwo tethers to the windward jackline andthe shorter one to the mast Thom hadtaught us to rig tethers so that you couldnot go overboard if you slipped Sailorshave drowned after falling over the sideand then being dragged underwater whilestill attached to the boat I shuddered atthe thought The staysail came down eas-ily but in the process I turned my back tothe wind and waves and lost sight of thedim horizon My inner ear instantlyrebelled and I was overcome with nauseaSince I had rigged my tethers correctly Iwas able to get to the leeward lifelines butcouldnt quite lean all the way overboardTwo purges later and I felt much betterWe decided that is was too rough toremove the sail and carry it back to thecockpit so Perry and I lashed it to thedeck and inner stay with the sheets Wesat on the deck on each side of the sail aswe worked with waves breaking over theforedeck completely soaking us from thewaist down My legs were getting numbfrom the cold water and didnt respondwell when asked to support my woozybody and stagger back to the cockpit Ijust threw up on your deck I mumbledlooking at Jeff and Sue They were good-natured about it and were more relievedthat the two of us were safe in the cockpitagain Nevertheless I was a littleashamed at getting sick but felt good that

I had worked through it and helped getthe boat out of a tough spot The seasick-ness was a first for me in a long time Inthe Navy I made it across the NorthAtlantic and Pacific Oceans down toCape Horn and above the Arctic Circlewithout getting sick Queasy sure butnever lost my Doritos before Oh wellstuff happens

Finally things seemed under controland it was time to focus on the nightapproach into Grand Marais Like mostports from a distance navigation aidswere easily confused with the back-ground lights on shore after dark Is thatthe red breakwater light or a stoplightNeither its an automobile tail lightFortunately visibility was good and it allmade sense as we got in closer Therewere a few tense moments when the GPSchartplotter showed us heading too far tothe left Visually we had the harborentrance lined up perfectly red on theright and green on the left and we couldsee the outlines of both breakwaters Bysight we were right on track but the GPSsaid we should turn to starboard We wereconfident of our visual fix and knew thatcharting software was sometimes inaccu-rate After a brief discussion we held ourcourse and ignored the chartplotter AsFaith split the breakwaters perfectly herGPS track plotted merrily across therocks of the eastern breakwater on thedisplay I understood where the phraseGPS-assisted grounding came from

Grand Marais Harbor was not muchcalmer than the open lake There is ananchorage on the west end which thecruising guide describes as tenuous atbest There are private moorings and apublic dock built by the ForestryDepartment on the east side We opted forthe sturdy Forestry dock even though itwas exposed to the weather and tied upjust after midnight It was a rough night atthe pier as Faith strained on her mooringlines and we rigged every fender onboardbetween her port side and the dock tim-bers

Days 4 amp 5 We woke up at about 8 AM Faith was in one piece as werewe although the boat had chafed througha frac34-inch mooring line We walked over

to the South of the Border Cafeacute for ahearty breakfast of pancakes and omeletsThe wind howled at 25 knots from thesouthwest all morning and continued tobatter us against the pier We spent theday working on boat projects includingrerouting the mainsail reefing lines andlazy jacks Perry washed down the boatand noticed some orange stains on theport side Are those Doritos he askedlooking at me Late in the afternoon thewind shifted to the west and eased to 10-15 knots We decided to eat dinner whilewe let the lake calm down and made surethat the wind change was for real Wewalked over to the Angry Trout Cafeacute onthe north side of the harbor Drinks wereoutside on Adirondack chairs and we got

there just in time for the evening otterfeeding We had to wait quite a while forour table but it was worth it The freshwhitefish was the best Ive ever had andthe organic salads and soups were superbas well The wind remained moderateand after our dinner digested a bit we gotunderway from Grand Marais at 11 PMThe moonlight and visibility were goodbut not great and we picked our way outof the harbor with a spotlight dodgingboats and mooring balls on the way outA perfect west wind blew at 10-15 knotsall night long and we reached downMinnesotas North Shore at 5-6 knotsidentifying the lights of familiar land-

marks along the way We rotated in two-person watch teams and Perry and I tookthe midnight-to-four AM shift Faith wasenjoying the breeze and galloped alongthrough the night The ride was bumpyand we were entertained by Jeff and Sueslaughter from below as they were tossedinto the air with each big wave Theycouldnt sleep but didnt care and wereclearly having fun Sleep came easily forme however and I crashed in the V-berth half on the bunk cushion andhalf on the port bulkhead as we remainedheeled over hour after hour on a starboardtack It was a pity to slow down to prac-tice crew overboard drills When the suncame up the wind began to ease andshifted to the northwest We dug throughFaiths impressive sail collection andpulled out a lovely cruising spinnakercomplete with dousing sock We flew thechute until the wind died completelybefore noon The lake was calm for aboutan hour then the wind swung around andfilled in from the southwest There is avariation of Murphys Law on LakeSuperior that states the wind will gener-ally be on the nose when returning to porton the last day of a voyage Ill bet thishappens on other bodies of water Wefired up the diesel for the last severalhours and returned to Barkers IslandMarina again through the Superior EntryWe arrived at Faiths slip on E-dock ataround 7 PM (two bells in the second dogwatch) After offloading and cleaning theboat we said our goodbyes and headedback to the real world I had a doubleration of snack food to keep me alert onthe road I nibbled on beef jerky trail mixand chips (no Doritos) as I drove homeinto the setting sun thinking life isgood I had a terrific time gained somegreat sailing experience met some won-derful new people and got seasick It did-nt get any better than that

We all know what happens when a traincomes toward us at full speed with its horn

blowing At first the sound is very high pitchedbut it drops quickly as the train passes by andbecomes quite low-pitched while the trainspeeds away

The reason for this is whats called theDoppler effect The sound waves in front of thetrain are compressed very close together whichresults in a higher pitch Behind the train thesound waves are much farther apart resulting in

Though you wont hear any changes inpitch when you go from beating to running youmay notice some subtle changes in the wind Toillustrate this lets consider an example Supposeyou are sailing around on the starting line andyou will find that the wind is oscillating every fiveminutes As you sail up the first beat will theshifts come at you at the same rate

The answer is no Since you are sailingtowards the shifts you will get them faster per-haps every three or four minutes How aboutwhen you round the windward mark and saildown the run Since you are sailing away fromthe shifts you will get them less often perhapsevery 7 or 8 minutes

The strategic implications of this phenome-non are significant For example if there are 8minutes between shifts when you are sailingdownwind it is possible you will only see oneshift on the run And if you get only one shift onthe run it means you should treat that as a per-sistent shift (even though the overall wind patternis oscillating)

The Doppler windshift effect also explainswhy better pressure is so critical downwindSince you are sailing with the wind you wontsee so many puffs but you can stay in one muchlonger than on the beats Therefore getting intothe puff and using it fully is critical for optimumperformance

On a beat the speed at which you converge with shifts (andpuffs) is roughly equal to the sum of the wind speed plusyour VMG to windward In this case thatrsquos 10 (windspeed)plus 5 (VMG) or 15 knots But on a run the convergencespeed is the wind speed minus your VMG to leeward Hereitrsquos 4 knots (10 minus 6) So on a run the shifts are comingat you several times more slowly than on a beat so you willexperience that many fewer shifts

For the past several years Wisconsinmarina operators have been explor-

ing the creation of a Wisconsin MarinaAssociation Since 2007 a polling ofinterested marina operators broughttogether over 20 interested marinas earlyon in the process Financial assistance in2008 from the Wisconsin Department ofAdministrations Wisconsin CoastalManagement Program and WisconsinHarbor Towns Association (WHTA) hasallowed this Association to become areality in February 2009 with the elec-tion of the Board of Directors

The Wisconsin Marina Association(WMA) will bring together like-mindedowners and operators of marinas boat-yards yacht clubs and public and privatemoorage basins The Association willpromote the ethical educational com-municative and promotional advance-ment of the recreational boating industryin Wisconsin Additionally theWisconsin Clean Marina Program inpartnership with the University ofWisconsin Sea Grant Institute will belaunched in summer 2009 as a volun-tary program promoting environmental-ly sensitive facility management andboating practices

Boating has a large economicimpact in the Great Lakes region Areport by the Great Lakes Commissionestimates that the 43 million recreation-al boats registered in the eight Great

Lakes states generate nearly $16 billionin spending on boats and boating activi-ties in a single year That spendingdirectly supports 107000 jobs a figurethat grows to nearly a quarter millionjobs when secondary impacts are takeninto consideration This Associationwill be the beginning of great network-ing opportunities for marina operators inWisconsin The industry stands only togain by sharing ideas and successessays Jon Kukuk owner and operator ofNestegg Marine of Marinette and thenew Chair of the WMA

On Sunday October 5 2008 around2 pm a 41-foot power boat

exploded at the Oak Street Marina inSouth Haven Michigan The explosionillustrates the devastation boat fires caninflict not only to the boat itself but tonearby boats and those aboard

I spoke with Captain RichardLenardson of TowBoatUS a salvageand towing operation Richard wasnearby when the explosion rocked themarina ldquoI was around 30 boat docksaway when I heard a thunderous explo-sion followed by a fireball and plumeof black smokerdquo said Richard

ldquoI responded with my 23-foot towboat ldquoWhen I arrived on scene the boatwas engulfed in flames with blacksmoke boiling up from the inferno Thetop cabin of the boat lay smoldering ona nearby grassy knoll A secondaryexplosion sent debris through the hullof a boat in an adjacent sliprdquo

The fire had spread to boats inadjacent slips where fire consumed aboatrsquos mooring lines setting it free intothe boat basin where it threatened near-by boats Richard pushed the flamingboat back into its slip in reach of fire-fighters At first firefighters fought theblaze with water with limited effect Afire truck carrying foam soon arrivedand joined the fight ldquoWhile pushingthe burning boat back into the slip Icould not see ahead with foam coatingthe windshield Off to the side I sawone of the victims climbing up a nearbydock ladder with the skin on his facepeeled wayrdquo said Richard

The injured included two men awoman and child All were recoveredfrom the water by rescue personnelTwo of the adults were in critical con-dition Fire Chief Ronald Wise of SouthHaven Area Emergency Services sus-pects the boat owner and a friend wereusing a 28-gallon plastic gas containerwith an electric transfer pump to pumpgas into the boat when the vessel

exploded Reportedly the electricalsource for the pump was the boatrsquos bat-teries That the cabin was blown off theboat along with the stern suggests thatthe source of the explosion occurredwithin the boat The mishap remainsunder investigation

Boat-Smart tips when fuel-ing a boat

bull Open the engine hatches

bull Run the blower in the engine spaceand check the exhaust port on the sideof boat with your palm to make sureits discharging air During CoastGuard boat inspections I found a num-ber of boats where the exhaust hosehad separated from the discharge portSo rather than discharging possiblegas fumes through the exhaust port itwas circulating them around theengine compartment

bull Deploy a sure gas fume detector- yournose Open those engine hatches andgive it a good sniff especially afterrefueling a boat

bull Occasionally run a dry cloth over fuellines especially near connectingpoints Sniff the cloth for the odor ofgasoline This procedure is highly rec-ommended after engine work involv-ing gas-line joint connections

bull Michigan rules limit the size of plasticcontainers to five gallons for trans-portation of flammable liquid

One way to live off the grid is totrade in those land lubber legs and headfor sea Cruisers from all over the worlddrift to the warm waters of the Bahamasand Caribbean Islands I guess the waterattracted my family as well For sixmonths we lived on a thirty-five footIsland Packet while traveling in SouthCarolina Georgia Florida and theBahamas

Before we left for our trip many ofmy friends asked me how I was going tosurvive They were jealous that I wasskipping the second half of my sopho-more year but they also admitted thattheir family would never last together Iwould just shrug and reply Well man-age and we did There were timeswhen I felt like running to a room andslamming a door but I couldnt Ourboat Paradise had only two cabins Theforward v-birth belonged to my parentsand the aft quarter birth though contain-ing my personal items didnt have roomfor two teenage girls so it went to mysister Most of the time I slept up in thecockpit the only times I didnt werewhen we had to lock the boat up at nightor when it was buggy Both of thoseoccasions happened only when we werein The States There werent many timeswhen I thought twice about not having aroom though

The cruisers and locals alike were agreat bunch Friends were made by just

taking the dinghy over to a boat andintroducing yourself If you decided youdidnt like the people you could simplydecide not to spend time with them Iloved a lot of the people we met butthroughout the trip I yearned for a per-son my age to talk to My wish wasgranted when we arrived in Allens Cayabout a month in We had met the firstkids our age in over a month andinstantly became friends For five weeksour routes became a dance Sometimeswe led and they followed and some-times they led while we followed Afterthe third week we had to start sayinggoodbye The first time was probablythe hardest because it was then we trulybelieved we wouldnt see them againbut by the third time we had said good-bye it came to mean See you sometimelater this month After goodbye numberfive or six it was over They continuedsouth while we headed back northBesides their family there were onlytwo other people I met who were myage

Though we had hoped to make ourway to the Virgin Islands the Bahamas

were not a bad alternative We found thatthere wasnt much elevation the highestpoint measured 63 meters (2067 feet) atMount Alvernia on Cat Island and therewas not a great variety of vegetation onmany of them Seeing as the land wasntmuch to look at we literally dove deep-er When we heard of a good place tosnorkel wed hop in the dinghy andmotor to that spot All of our informationcame from new friends we had met andby the end of the trip our maps were fullof circles indicating good spear-fishingsnorkeling and anchorage spots

One of the hardest parts of the tripwas keeping everything up and runningMy dad became Mr Fix It and seemed tobe working on something every daySome cruisers joke about how sailing isgoing from one exotic place to anotherwhile fixing things and you alwayshave five things wrong with your boatthe problem is you only know aboutthree There is a reality to that Ourbiggest problems always had to do withenergy in some way It meant having torun the engine twice a day to keep thebatteries charged trying to get the fridge

to stop sucking so much energy andkeeping lights off It would have beengreat to have solar panels or a wind gen-erator but for such a short trip on a boatwe were planning to sell it just didntseem like a very good investment

The boats we traveled with varied insize and type that sometimes reflectedupon their owners personalities butevery person living down there had atleast one thing in common They lived ina world controlled not by people but byMother Nature When the sun shonesolar panels were tipped this way andthat to capture as many rays as possibleWhen the wind blew it seemed like thehum of every generator could be heardthroughout the anchorage When itrained the decks were dotted with potsand pans because when it came fromthe sky it meant two things it was freeand it was pure

It is said that the average Americanuses one to two hundred gallons of watera day The US Geological Survey foundthat in 2000 we Americans withdrew408 billion gallons of water per day andevery year that number increases Livingon a sailboat makes a person realize justhow much that is not only because sail-boats have small water tanks but alsobecause fresh water in the Bahamasranges from ten to fifty cents a gallonEvery time we filled up our minimalwater supply the price was approxi-mately forty dollars Our water tank heldabout 90 gallons plus we had two thir-ty-gallon bladders We tapped into thebladders just three times but ninety gal-lons sometimes lasted us as long aseleven days Per day each person in ourfamily averaged about two to six gallonsof fresh water

There were a lot of items we livedwithout that played a huge part indecreasing our water usage Washingmachines and dishwashers were notpresent in our small home nor was ayard Some people might say that nothaving those everyday objects wascheating that of course water usagewould go down if there were fewerappliances to waste water but the realityis this sustainable living is all about

choices Choosing to live without theluxury of a washing machine or dish-washer is a choice Because we didnthave a yard we did not use gallons upongallons of water for the sole purpose ofa nice curb appeal Every time weflushed our toilet with salt water wesaved ourselves the average of aboutthree and a half gallons of fresh drinkingwater Multiply that by four people thenagain by five times per day and thatcomes to a grand total of seventy gallonsa day just for flushing the toilet

As live aboards of sixth months weexperienced just four days of rain Thefirst pitter patter of drops I had heard inover two months brought me above deckto check out what was going on The lasttime it had rained had been when wewere in Florida two months prior Thenin the Bahamas it seemed strange to seethe oceans surge with the pattern of rainupon its surface It distorted the view ofthe bottom but the gentle flowing ofwater created a mesmerizing effect Iwatched it for hours Most days of rainwere anything but calm though Theother three were windy with gusts up to35 knots and had huge choppy wavesNeedless to say we stayed on the boatThose days we battened the hatcheszipped down our rain shields surround-ing the cockpit and hunkered downReading and writing filled the days withthe occasional movie or episode of afavorite television series Twice we triedto collect water but there was neverenough to really make a difference Thesecond time we laid a clean plastic table-cloth over the main hatch and ran thewater into our metal bowls It seemedlike there wouldve been a greaterchance of collecting water since therewas more surface area but it was to noavail Instead we got free showersBeing soaked with fresh water and notworrying about how much was left wasa rare treat We hung our salt encrustedtowels and clothes over the lifelines inhopes of them being de-salted withoutphysically washing them

Water was only available on islandsthat were inhabited Of the approximate2500 cays and islands about thirty are

inhabited Planning the route aroundthose islands was not difficult but it wascrucial We did not have a water makeralthough it would have been usefulThey are also very expensive and not ascommonly found in the cruising com-munity as solar panels and wind genera-tors Most water makers found on cruis-ing boats use the reverse osmosis sys-tem which forces salt water through anextremely fine membrane trapping thesolute (salt and other minerals) on oneside and letting the pure or almost purewater get through to the other side intothe tank
