A Sacred Time! Submit ted by Fr. Tom Tureman, SDS

Dear Friends, Christmas is truly a sacred time. A time to be with loved ones,

a time to watch the kids open their presents, a time to remember. Christmas is also a time to pause and to reflect on the many gifts that God has given us. For most of us Christmas is joyful but for some a time of loss and sad-ness. Salvatorians to Milwaukeefor Chapter Meetings Submit ted by Fr. Jeff Wocken, SDS

In early 2018, you might notice some of the Salvatorians at Most Holy Trinity dis-appearing for a week

or so. Don’t worry; they won’t be gone for long. Sister Jane will be at the Sisters’ chapter, February 12-17. Brother Jeff, Deacon Marcel and Frs. Tom, John, Jeff, and Bill, will all be go-ing to their chapter, Febru-ary 26-March 2. Some of the Lay Salvatorians at MHT will attend their convocation, April 13-15. All of these meet-ings are being held in Milwaukee, WI. What do these gatherings mean for us Salvatorians? A great deal! A “chapter” is like a synod or council held every three years and is the most authoritative decision-making

body for a religious order. These are impor-tant times of prayerful discernment for a com-munity, when we address the tough questions of finances and membership. It’s also when we strengthen our hope for the future and make plans for how to move forward, includ-ing the election of new leadership.

What does this mean for MHT? Probably not much. There might be some shifting of person-nel, but I think it’s safe to say MHT is stuck with Salvatorians for a while longer. Hope-fully, you will find your ministers and friends re-

turning from these gatherings renewed in their dedication to serve others as Salvatorians. So we might be away for a few days, but you won’t be far from our thoughts and prayers, and we ask that you keep us and these important meetings in your prayers, as well. M

New Procedure forCommunion Time Submit ted by Pete Adamcin, Co-editor

Out of a desire to have the Commu-nion portion of the liturgy proceed more smoothly, a new procedure has

evolved. Beginning the first Sunday of Ad-vent, the Eucharistic Ministers will be posi-

tioning themselves differently, particularly at the beginning and ending portions of Com-munion time. Initially, the Eucharistic Ministers will locate themselves as shown in the shaded area of the diagram. The Presider will serve as Bread Minister B1; the deacon (when pres-ent) is Cup Minister C1. The remaining Bread Ministers will line up to the Presider’s right, and the Cup Ministers behind him. The ministers will receive first and then proceed to serve the choir/musicians followed by those who are handicapped. THE CONGREGATION IS REQUESTED TO REMAIN IN THEIR PLACES UNTIL THESE FOLKS HAVE BEEN SERVED. Then, Communion will be distribut-ed as in the past. If a Bread Minister has hosts remaining, or if Precious Blood remains in one or more of the cups, those ministers will move to their alternate positions, as shown by the arrows. With your cooperation, the Com-munion portion of the Mass should pro-ceed more quickly and be less confusing for all of us. M

A Season of Hope andExpectation Submit ted by Dcn. Marcel Emeh, SDS

Advent is a period Christians all over the world joyfully expect and prepare both for the celebration of the birth of

Christ at Christmas and ultimately the Parou-sia, that is the second coming of Christ at the end of time. Pope Francis refers to Advent as the “season of active waiting and watchful-ness, that restores the horizon of hope.” Furthermore, Advent marks the be-ginning of the liturgi-cal year most espe-cially in the Western Church; hence it is a season of a clarion call on us all to “begin again” or “start afresh.” Buttressing this fact, Pope Francis noted that just as in each of our lives we always need to begin again, to get up again, and to rediscover the meaning of the

goal of our lives, so also for the great human family, it is always necessary to rediscover the common horizon toward which we are jour-neying. The horizon of hope! This is the horizon that makes for a good journey. The season of Advent helps to restore this horizon of hope, a hope which does not disappear for it is founded on God’s Word. A hope which does not disappoint, simply because the Lord never disappoints! He is ever faithful! May this awesome season

help to revitalize our Christian faith, hope, and above all love of God and neighbor. All our Mass read-ings, in addition, throughout this sea-son, would be re-minding us of how God prepared the world for the coming of Christ which re-

mains an event of such magnanimity, willed by God to restore the fallen humanity back to grace and glory.

The Annual MHT Festival Submit ted by Britney Morales, MHT Financial Director

Celebrating cooler weather, chang-ing leaves, and the harvest season is always an enchanting time. At

Most Holy Trinity Parish, we observed the change with “Oktoberfest” which was a fun and entertaining event. In a pure celebra-tion of autumn, MHT came together to cel-ebrate with food, games, Chinese auction, and entertainment. This year most of the food, water, soda, and the auction items were donated by parishioners and vendors. The food was deli-cious; we had tacos, carne asada, cheeseburg-ers and hotdogs. Thanks to all of our wonder-ful cooks, everyone loved the food! All of the children enjoyed playing the festival games, such as painting pump-kins, face painting, train rides, cake walk, and mini-golf just to name a few. The Chi-nese Auction was a very popular event. We heard much positive feedback about the prizes that had been donated, such as beautiful gift baskets and gift card to sa-lons and restaurants. Most people look forward to the en-tertainment at an event, and we did not dis-appoint as we had the best entertainers. We would like to thank all of the entertainers

that participated: Mariachi Inspiracion, Con-junto, F.E.A.R, Viva Arizona Dancers, Maria-chi Corazon, Rusty Old Men, as well as Most Holy Trinity Children’s Choir. The staff is extremely grateful to ev-eryone. They would like to say thanks for all the ways you sup-ported this event ~ attending, giving financially, donat-ing time, using talents, or encour-aging others to join in the fun! We would not have been able to carry out this event or our mission without you. All of the profit from Oktoberfest will be going towards replacing the flooring in the church, which we are very excited about. Overall, Oktoberfest was a very successful event, and we plan to continue to grow our annual tradition. It’s all about fall spirit and bringing the community to-gether. We look forward to seeing all of you at next year’s Oktoberfest! M

Anyone Hungry forBreakfast? Submit ted by Gretel Machado

Being a part of the Breakfast Ministry is a great joy to a variety of people. All members attending the day’s masses

are provided an opportunity to purchase and enjoy warm breakfasts, varying from menudo to breakfast burritos, with the money going

towards church needs. Breakfast is served by many different groups, including the MALEs group, the youths of the church, and my fam-ily as well. My family is the Montijo-Macha-do group, in charge of breakfast every fourth Sunday. Our preparational process begins by arriv-ing to Most Holy Trinity

bright and early, around 7 a.m. We take ev-erything that is needed for the morning out of the fridges and pantry, and start setting up the food warmers as we wait for La Estrella Bak-

ery to delivery their delicious donuts, Mexi-can pastries, and menudo. Everything is set outside in the dining hall, making sure there is plenty of juice for the little ones, and cups for those in need of a coffee pick-me-up. Once La Estrella delivers, my Tia Carmen begins the process of making her delicious pancakes, attempting new specialties every month. My family likes to work with music; if we don’t have it, we go insane with only hear-ing pots and pans clanking. If someone was to look into the kitchen while we work, one would see us dancing and singing along to whatever is playing as we prep and cook. This time is used also to catch up on our family’s busy lives since we don’t get as much time as we would like to spend together. We joke around a lot ~ my dad likes to crack jokes and mess with everyone ~ and we all end up leaving MHT with full bellies because of the sampling we do throughout the morning. Getting the chance to do this every month makes us feel as if we are helping by continuing to create the sense of community especially after hearing powerful sermons at mass. The smiles and full bellies we see leav-ing the church are payment enough for us. We will be excited to continue with our work af-ter the holiday season! M

“Behold, I Make All Things New” Revelation 2:15

Submit ted by Marcos E. Moreno, MHT Youth Minister

This summer, Most Holy Trinity Youth, along another 1300 other Catholic teens from all over, some as far as Alaska

took part in the 2017 Steubenville West Youth Conference. The ocean of Catholics experi-

enced the joy of following Christ and being elevated by His love. The theme for the Annual conference was ELEVATE, throughout the weekend at the University of Arizona the youth were shown how the Holy Spirit has always been with them and will never ever abandon them. The conference allowed

a couple of the youth to see Christ for the first time. Throughout the weekend they experienced Him, and all the love

and grace He has for them and for everyone else. Because of the conference they prom-ised to become more devoted to Christ and their faith. Steubenville helped one young man from MHT with his possible discerning the priesthood. The youth raised the monies needed for the event; three generous dona-tions from Parishioners also helped the group complete their fundraising. Thank you Fr. Tom, Most Holy Trinity Parishioners, Griselda, Margaret, and Mary for making this life changing experience possible. M

The Trinity Times 6

As believers, we anticipate and wait for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, both in his birth and in his glorious return. We expect the inauguration of God’s Kingdom on earth as it is in heaven. We expect that in God’s name all oppression shall cease, all kinds of discriminations, injustices, racisms, inequalities, ethnocentrisms shall cease. Hence, we begin to embrace each other as brothers and sisters created in God’s image

A Season of Hope(Continued from Page 3)

and likeness. We begin to treat each other with love, dignity and respect. As sisters and broth-ers, we work mutually for justice, peace and end of violence in our world. Our hope and ex-pectation will never fail or disappoint us. Instead, we believe strongly the words of Archangel Gabriel that said with God all things are possible. We also trust and believe Christ who promised to remain with us until the end of time so that the light of Christ will continue to shine brightly in our world to il-lumine the darkness. Together we shall walk boldly with that unquenchable light. M

Southwest Medical Aid Submit ted by Mike and Susan Taylor, SDS Candidates

Eight months have passed since we ar-rived in Tucson to begin ”the sunset of our lives” as co-executive directors

of Southwest Medical Aid (SMA). We came from California unknowing of the beautiful life we would find here. We are enjoying our new neigh-borhood, the weather, our church, Most Holy Trinity, the multicultural experiences and its rich history. On the weekends, we discover new towns, markets and parks, mu-sic, theater, sports and points of interest. Our operations at SMA include gathering medical supplies and equipment from many contributors; hospitals, doctor’s offices and individuals who have used them previously for parents or family members who no longer need them. We sort and package these donations into 25 pound box-es and store them in our warehouses until they are needed. We have project partners who share the items for distribution. Many people give donations of cash so we can pay for our overhead and office needs. SMA serves the poor and needy within the Tucson diocese, other Arizona and Mexico areas, as well as many other countries. We often partner with El Rio, PPEP, as well as the Salvatorians who are here in Tucson to achieve our goals. We have been in operation for over 12 years.

Who does the work? Volunteers eigh-teen and older come together Tuesday through Friday from eleven to three. Usually, a person serves from one to two days per week of their choice. They are often retirees from different backgrounds or medical areas. We love their

stories, experiences, hu-mor, and share lunch daily and special celebrations. We also have a mission trip which will take place from January 20 - Febru-ary 4, 2018. This is a pe-riod of two weeks where over 20 volunteers will go to Roatan, Honduras, and apply their expertise in medical and community projects. This effort aids SMA as well.

If you have some free time and would like to join us as a vol-unteer we encourage you to try us, you will reap many rewards both personal and for our community. We are located at 525 W. Plata here in Tucson. M

Prayer for PriestsSubmit ted by Norma Morrison

May our priests be clothed in the armor of God.May their guardian angels protect

and lead them.

May the Lion of Judah roar over their parishesTo become rivers of mercy flowing forth.

May the Holy Spirit transform them and send them outTo exalt Jesus and become more like God.

May they have the gift of courage not to be afraid,But to be bold in the Spiritual Gifts.

May they have faith not to waver but beEmbraced and touched by our holy lives.

May they have a sense of discernment to knowThe right way to speak and react with others.

May they evangelize and carry good news to thoseWho feel trapped in spiritual darkness.

If any Gifts are on their shelves,May they dust them off and use them wisely.

May their hands be blessed by You, O Lord,To build Your People up and fulfill Your Purposes.

From Norma Morrison’s book, Small White Hearts, 2012 M

Life in the Frozen Tundra(AKA Milwaukee, WI) Submit ted by Sr. Liz Christensen, SDS

There was disbelief from several sources when I said I was mov-

ing to Milwaukee in October. “You’re moving WHERE? At THIS time of year? Why would you DO that?” Circumstances were such that this would be the necessary time to move. First thing I needed to do after I got here was to put all my lightweight cot-ton slacks and tops into storage. The second was to go out and buy winter clothing: heavy jacket, scarf, gloves, mittens, hat, turtleneck tops, and sweaters. I looked with envy at the forecast for Tucson (80’s) and with dismay at the forecast for Milwaukee (down to 16 a couple of nights ago, highs in the 30’s or 40’s). Already one morning I had to scrape thick frost off my car windows – that’s another thing I had to buy – an ice scraper/brush. Gone from my window view were the mountains and Palo Verde and the little liz-

ards running back and forth. In their place I have lush green grass, bushes with bright red leaves, trees that have golden brown leaves and a number of shrubs and trees with all their leaves gone. Squirrels and rabbits are

busy preparing for winter, growing their coats instead of buying them on sale. Canadi-an geese stop by to nibble on the grass on their way through the area. It is good to be back with my Sisters (I live with three of them and there are a few doz-en others in the Milwaukee area in various communities of 1-4 and in our assisted liv-

ing unit (Salvatorian Sisters’ Residence – also known as SSR). I’ve already been tapped to work on a committee and will soon look at other volun-teer opportunities in the area that match my skills and energy level. I miss all of you in Tucson and in Most Holy Trinity Parish, but I am joining a Salva-torian parish nearby called St. Pius X where I know I will make additional friends. If you come to Milwaukee, look me up. I’ll loan you my ice scraper if I’m not using it. M

Where there is patience and humility there is neither anger nor worry.St. Francis

The Amazing History ofour Soup Patrol Submit ted by Jeanet te Arnquist

Soup Patrol’s history goes back to 2006 when Br. David Buer, ofm, obtained a small grant. He rented a van for two

months and began distributing soup pro-vided by Caridad Community Kitchen on the streets of Tucson. The idea for Soup Patrol actually goes back to Matthew’s Gospel, “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me.” (Matt 25:35) In 2008, Most Holy Trinity took over the ministry and responsibility for recruiting and scheduling volunteers. Ten years later, the ministry continues with 70 volunteers dis-tributing soup every night between Novem-ber 1 and March 31. As in the past, Caridad Community Kitchen, a part of the Commu-nity Food Bank of Southern Arizona prepares the soup Monday – Friday and 35 or so vol-unteers prepare it in the kitchen at Most Holy Trinity on weekends. We learned that Jesse, the Caridad soup chef, who was homeless when he was a teenager, was actually served soup by Br. David. He expressed deep gratitude for the much needed warmth that he received from the soup and from the hospitality.

Going out on Soup Patrol is both a joy and a sorrow. It is heartbreaking to real-ize that so many people right here in Tucson are so hungry, are so without the resources re-quired for survival, that they need our minis-try. And it is a joy to be able to join with other volun-teers to serve the “least of our brothers and sisters.” It is often an i n s p i r a t i o n to meet the other Soup Patrollers and be touched by the love and compassion in their hearts. Every time I go on Soup Patrol, I encounter Christ in the bread line. I meet someone who shows me deepest humanity. I thank God for the opportunity to be a part of this ministry. M Editor’s note: Jeanette Arnquist has been a parishioner at Most Holy Trinity since retiring to Tucson in 2012. She has volunteered to coordinate Soup Patrol this year.
