1. Native Americans were the first people to live in the area, originally called Cahuenga (Kuwenga).
2. In the late 1700’s, the Spanish arrived and divided Cahuenga into east and west. The Spanish called the west side Rancho La Brea.
3. In 1886, a man named H.H. Wilcox bought a part of Rancho La Brea, which his wife renamed ‘Hollywood.’
4. Later, Wilcox began to develop Rancho La Brea into a community.

5. In 1911, the first film studio opened in Hollywood.
6. During the 1920’s and 1930’s the film industry grew, and Hollywood became famous.
7. Soon after, movie director Cecil B. DeMille made the first feature-length film, The Squaw Man.
8. By the 1950’s, many movie stars were leaving Hollywood.
9. Today, Hollywood is still famous.
