Eagle Scout Service Project Fundraiser August 13th and 14th
Joel Kattapuram, a long-time altar server and a Boy Scout from Troop 604, is fundraising for his Eagle Scout Service Project. The project is landscaping a 2,000 square foot area across from the Rectory here at the church. This includes removing some of the existing ground cover, replanting with
drought tolerant and native plants, and installing additional drip irrigation system. Joel will be in the plaza on August 13th and 14th after all Masses trying to raise funds for his project. Any extra funds collected will be donated to the church.
Thank you for your support and God bless! Letter From VBS Coordinators Dear Santiago Family, The 2016 Cave Quest adventure is now over. We had an awesome time learning all about Jesus, the light of the world and all of His love for each and everyone of us. We brought in food and school supplies for South County. We made twenty blankets for those who need comfort. We raised money for Catholic Charities and their educational goals, and we learned that coming to church for a week is a lot of fun. We wanted to thank you all for your prayers and good thoughts as we traveled the dark passages together and learned to have fun while learning and sharing God's Love. Thank you to the staff who helped to make this all possible by allowing 300 youth and children to take over the church and hall. You gave us the space we needed to learn, play, and laugh and we hope we made you smile during the week. Thank you Fr. Thomas for not only saying Mass for us and letting us use the church all week, but especially for dancing and singing with us. It was a special gift from you to us. Thank you to the parents who helped with food, donations, and just getting your kids there on time to start our day. Thank you for letting your kids share their love and enthusiasm for God with us. Thank you to the youth who did the heavy lifting during the week, leading, teaching, and making sure all the campers got to where they needed to be. We have an amazing group of teenagers we can all be extremely proud of. Finally we wanted to thank the campers who reminded us that Jesus' light shines in everyone. God Bless and we will see you next year for VBS 2017! Suzanne Loberg and Stacie Rego

Thank You - Gracias, Santiago de Compostela! by/por Dave Owens
We are almost ready to bring down the final curtain on Camino de Santiago - 2016. The results are recorded, the “after-action” discussions have been analyzed, and by all accounts the Camino de Santiago experience has met with your enthusiastic approval, as more than 500 Pilgrims participated “Along the Way”. The Camino Committee knows the areas where improvements are needed. With your help, we will plan and we will work to make Camino 2017 a worthy celebration of the Santiago de Compostela community spirit.
There are a few open unresolved items:
1. If you did not receive a T-shirt on the day of Camino, please go to the Office in the Parish Center to sign the roster with your contact information and shirt size. We will have a shirt for everyone, who requests one. The remaining inventory will be distributed and additional T-shirts will be printed to satisfy all requests.
2. You may have noticed that the Intentions Box and the baskets holding your Stones remain at the foot of the altar, where they will continue to be remembered and offered with each Eucharistic Sacrifice until August 15th. After the final weekend Masses, the Stones and Intentions will be retired to their final repository, the new Stone Cross located in front of the Parish Center.
3. We are continuing to build a database with the contact information that you provided during the registration process. This information will be used only to provide you with information on future Camino related news. This information will never be used for other purposes. We will be working on new on-line tools which will streamline the process for years to come, including your ability to register on-line.
4. If you did not receive your Certificate, and you want your Certificate, you may pick up your completed Certificate in the Parish Office.
Now, we can lower the final curtain. We are excited about the future of our Camino heritage, and the many blessings that we enjoy through patronage of Santiago de Compostela. Santiago de Compostela - Pray for Us!

2016-17 Registration Important Message from Faith Formation:
Religious Education sign-ups ended July 31. In August, children go on a “wait list” for space available. Did You Know classes are offered for all children 1st thru 8th grades, even those who have already made their First Communion? Parents and Grandparents: Please
encourage student participation every year. To carry on Jesus’ Message of Love--so needed in our world today-- we seek several more teachers of faith on Mondays, plus a special person with a passion for the Old Testament on Wednesday evenings. Please pray with me for a great response. For more information, contact Gloria Fetta at 949-951-8599 ext.230.
Teachers and Aides Needed for Religious Education Classes
Is God calling you to teach or aide in Faith Formation? If you are hearing that tiny whisper saying, “You can do it, you can do it!” like I did so many years ago, then maybe God is nudging you to find out about our Religious Education program for children. This summer is a perfect time to come in and chat with me to discover how you can become a perfect fit into our on-going Faith Formation program for children. ~ Gloria Fetta, 949-951-8599 ext. 230 or [email protected]
RCIA/RICA Registration As the Church liturgical year trends to study and reflection, we, the Santiago faith community, once again prepare for those who seek knowledge and information about our Catholic Christian tradition.
The process of welcome and education in the Catholic Christian tradition is called the Order of the Catechumenate. The Order of the Catechumenate dates to the days immediately after the death of Christ. It’s a process whereby unbaptized and those baptized in another Christian tradition come to know, understand and embrace the Catholic faith. Many know and recognize this process as the RCIA program (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults). Are you aware we also have an adapted RCIA program for children grades 1 through 12? We offer the adult process in either English or Spanish and the Children’s process is bi-lingual.
Registration forms for Adults and Children are available in the Parish Office or through the parish
website: www.sdccatholic.org. Call the Office of Catechumenate for additional information at 949-951-8599 ext. 231

Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 14, 2016
Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time This Jubilee Year of Mercy bids us share our own experience of Jesus’ mercy with those on what Pope Francis calls the “peripheries”—people who feel marginalized, even unwelcome—inviting them to come home. But with all this mercy, why today’s mayhem? “Do you think I have come to establish peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division” (Luke 12:51). Jesus “breaks down” those “breakups” in painful detail—parents, children, even in-laws. “Against” appears eight times in five verses. Jeremiah faced death for bearing witness (Jeremiah 38:4). Can’t we bear at least a small share of the sometimes merciless cost of sharing mercy? The Letter to the Hebrews warns us, keep your “eyes fixed on Jesus” and “so great a cloud of witnesses,” lest we “grow weary and lose heart” as we run “the race that lies before us” (Hebrews 12:1–3). After all, “for the sake of the joy that lay before him,” Jesus “endured the cross” (12:2). Can’t we endure our small crosses for the sake of sharing mercy? —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
Third and Final Trip to the Holy Door Saturday, October 1st at 1pm
Anyone interested in traveling to the Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano to experience the Holy Door? A group of your fellow parishioners are gathering in the back parking lot at 1pm for a blessing, form carpools, drive to Mission San Juan, and regroup in the parking lot at the Mission. Once we have regrouped, we will
experience “passing from darkness into light” by walking through the Holy Door. Those in “condition” to
gain the Indulgence will, as they prayerfully pass through the door.
When all have passed through the door, we will regroup and begin an eleven station prayer journey, developed for the Year of Mercy. Our total time from Santiago to San Juan and back to Santiago will not be
more than two hours. Conditions for the Indulgence: • A Catholic in good standing • Be in the state of grace • Have the interior detachment from sin, even venial
sin • Have sacramentally confessed your sins • Received the Holy Eucharist • Pray for the intentions of the Pope • The Indulgence can only be obtained once a day.
However, it can be applied to another person (living or deceased).
• Reconciliation and the Eucharist can be celebrated 20 days prior to the Indulgence.
