FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT

Jesus knew the scribes and Pharisees were trying to trap him. They put him in what seemed to be a

no-win situation. Let the woman who was caught in adultery go, and he would have been accused of ignoring the law. Let her be stoned, and he would fail to show mercy toward her,

contradicting his life s message. Jesus response teaches three crucial lessons: none of us is free of

sin; we are not the ultimate judges of others; Jesus is the mercy of God, in whom we can

always trust. In Christ, God does something new. When we give our hearts to Christ, we have the

hope of new life, a life in which mercy reigns.

Fifth Sunday of Lent April 7, 2019

  JMJ April 7, 2019

My Dearest Parish Family, God be with us always. How does one reflect and pray on the day of one’s birth? This was one question I asked myself as I wrote this letter. I remembered what I read and have shared about how one should regard birthdays: “that we should not just add years to our life BUT we should strive to add life to our years.” What it meant to me is that the years are just but the number but how the years were lived matters. As the song says: “what matters most is that we loved at all.” To love is the calling of each one. Our Lord Jesus could not have made it more clear than when he emphasized the two greatest commandment: “to love God and to love your neighbor as you love yourself .” Take note that the neighbor includes those who hate us – our enemies. While it may be routine for us to give from the call of function meaning from our responsibilities as our vocation in life dictates i.e. parents, students, nurses, etc. This is giving because we have to – it is our role and our duty. This is simply complying with what is the consequence of our choices. We can also do charity by giving of what we have materially and financially – while this is an important and essential in our day to day living, we must strive to go further. We must have for our ideal in giving the “Widow’s Mite” as illustrated by our Lord. She gave everything she has. It is because the widow gave from her heart. This is the kind of charitable action that the discipline of Lent is demanding from us. Our practice of almsgiving is to form our hearts into embracing the spirit of compassion and generosity. The same compassion we hear Jesus our Lord manifests in the Gospel. As the prayer of St. Ignatius expresses: “to give and not to count the cost . . . to fight and not to heed the wounds.” I look back at the 53 years that has passed

in my life – I am now turning 54. I can honestly say I have loved and it mattered but I can sincerely commit to giving more. I am able not because of my own strength but because I am mercifully loved by God and empowered by His Spirit. God bless and take care. Love and prayers,

Fr.

Dios bendiga y cuide. Con amor y mis oraciones,

Fr. Thomas Paul K. Naval

Lent offers us the opportunity to prepare for the celebration of Easter, to walk with the catechumens preparing for the celebration of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation and for those of us who are baptized to prepare ourselves to renew our baptismal promises through penitential practices. In a particular way during Lent, we are asked to devote ourselves to the spiritual and corporal works of mercy that “remind us that faith finds expression in concrete everyday actions meant to help our neighbors in body and spirit.

Fifth Sunday of Lent April 7, 2019

Did you receive your copy of Best Lent Ever Journal?

If you did not, pick up your copy in the Parish Office.

Let us reflect during this Lent with the powerful questions that invite us to make a change in our lives.

5th Sunday : Jesus does not seek to condemn but to love. When have you felt condemned in your own life? When was a time you

really felt loved? Day 29: Jesus shares our humanity. He is closer to us and more like us than we often realize.

When has Jesus addressed your human need? Day 30: Christianity does not have a good reputation today for helping other—it’s up to us to change that.

Have you ever witnessed a miracle? Day 31: God wants us to serve the people of our own time and place and to serve them powerfully.

When have you chosen to get involved with someone else’s “mess”? Day 32: Forgiveness is one of the most difficult and powerful Holy Moments?

Whom do you need to forgive? Day 33: It is easy for us to sleepwalk through life and miss things. The Gospel is our wake-up call.

When have you received a wake-up call in your life? Day 34: We often are discouraged or tempted to make excuses and justifications as to why we can’t live the faith.

What is your favorite excuse?

5o Domingo : Jesús no busca condenar sino amar.

¿Alguna vez has presenciado un milagro?

¿A quien necesitas perdonar?

April is national Child Abuse Prevention Month. It is most appropriate that Child Abuse Prevention Month is held during the Lenten and Easter season as there is no better time than this when we experience renewal and growth that we celebrate the protection of our most valuable gift from God – our children.

For information on how you can become more informed and involved in keeping our children safe, log on to www.childwelfare.gov/preventing/preventionmonth or visit the Diocesan Office of Child and Youth Protection web page at: www.rcbo.org/group/child-and-youth-protection/
